My first shopping in a general store was in Miss Bee’s when I spent the summer with my grandmother in New
York.
“Go get them yourself” Miss Bee said, ignoring the shopping list held up before her nose. “I’m not your
servant, so just get yourself a basket from that pile over there and start filling.”
It took me three wall-to-wall searches before I found the first item on my list — a pork can be placed between
boxes of cereal and bread. Next up was toilet paper, found under the daily newspaper, and Band-Aids, found next to
the face cream. The store was a puzzle, but it held some surprises too. I found a new Superman comic behind the
peanut butter.
I visited Miss Bee a couple of times a week that summer. Some times she short-charged me. Other times she
overcharged or sold me an old newspaper instead of a current one. Going to the store was more like going into battle.
I left my Grandma’s house armed with my list — memorized to the letter — and marched into Miss Bee’s like
General Patton marching into North Africa.
All summer long she found ways to trip me up. No sooner had I learned how to pronounce bicarbonate of
soda (小苏打) and memorized its location on the shelf than Miss Bee rearranged the shelves and made me hunt for it
all over again. By summer’s end, however, the shopping trip that had once taken me an hour was done in 15 minutes.
The morning I was to return to Brooklyn, I stopped in to tell her that she was mean. To my amazement she
laughed and said. “Well, I don’t care! Each of us is put on this earth for a reason. I believe my job is to teach every
child I meet ten life lessons to help them. Think what you will, but when you get older you’ll be glad our paths
crossed!”
I thought the idea was absurd until one day my daughter came to me with homework troubles.
“It’s too hard,” she said. “Could you finish my math problems for me?”
“If I do it for you, how will you ever learn to do it yourself?” I said.
Suddenly, I was back at that general store where I had learned the hard way total up (结算) my bill along with
the cashier. As my daughter went back to her homework, I wondered: Had Miss Bee really taught me something all
those years ago? I took out my notebook and started writing “ .”

Parents exhausted by their children may have suspected it all along.
Youngsters possess greater energy levels than professional endurance athletes, scientists have discovered,
meaning it is virtually impossible for the average adult to match their pace. And for mothers and fathers hoping that
tiring out their little ones will ensure a good night’s sleep, be warned. Children also have an impressive recovery
time, and will rebound to their best quicker than parents’ expectation.
“We found the children used more of their aerobic metabolism ( 有氧代谢) and were therefore less tired
during the high-intensity physical activities.” said Sebastien Ratel, associate professor in Exercise Physiology who
completed this study. “This may explain why children appear to have the ability to play and play and play, long after
adults have yielded to exhaustion.”
Previous studies have shown that children do not tire as quickly as untrained adults during physical tasks and
it was suggested they had energy profiles comparable to endurance athletes, but there was no evidence to prove it
until now.
To find it out, the researchers recruited 12 youngsters aged between nine and 11, 12untrained men and 13
male endurance athletes who were national-level professional athletes or long-distance runners and cyclists. All were
asked to perform two seven second resistance sprints (负重冲刺跑), followed by one minute recovery while their
aerobic energy output was measured. On a second visit they were asked to cycle as fast as they can for 30 seconds.
Anaerobic exercise produces lactic acid, which causes muscle fatigue. The participants’ heart-rate, oxygen levels and
lactate-removal rates were checked after the cycling tasks to see how quickly they recovered. It was found that
during the cycling test, untrained adult’s power output fell by 51.8 per cent, and athletes by 41.8 per cent, but
children’s only decreased by 35.2 per cent.
The researchers believe the findings could help develop athletic potential in children as well as improve our
comprehension of how our bodies change from childhood to adulthood. “Many parents ask about the optimal way to
develop their child’s athletic potential,” said co-author Anthony Blazevich, professor in Biomechanics. “Our study
shows that muscle endurance is often exceptionally robust in children, so it might be better to focus on other areas of
fitness such as their sports technique, sprint speed or muscle strength. This may contribute to optimizing physical
conditioning in children, so that they perform better and obtain greater enjoyment from sports.”
46.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Children are better at many sports than most adults.
B.Children have a higher energy level than most adults.
C.Children recover from wounds quicker than adults.
D.Children sleep better than adults when they are tired.
47.Compared to previous studies, the study by Sebastien Ratel is unique because it ________.
A.found out for the first time why children were less exhausted by physical activities
B.provided parents with scientific evidence for how to ensure children rest well
C.showed that children could be trained to complete high-intensity sports activities
D.proved for the first time that children’s endurance could be greater than athletes’
48.What can be inferred from the data collected during the cycling test in Paragraph 5?
A.Children experience less muscle fatigue than adults.
B.Children have more muscle strength than adults.
C.Children develop less lactic acid than adults when exercising.
D.Children show better techniques than adults in sporting activities.
49.According to Anthony Blazevich, the findings of this study may help us to ________.
A.enhance adults’ muscle endurance
B.lift children’s aerobic metabolism level
C.lower children’s decreased power output
D.develop children’s athletic ability

In an increasingly individualistic world, the act of giving — whether time, resources, or skills — serves as a
powerful antidote to societal isolation. Engaging in charity activities fosters deeper human connections, enhances
interpersonal relationships, and profoundly influences individuals’ mental and emotional well-being. This essay
explores the multifaceted benefits of altruism (利他主义), emphasizing its role in nurturing community bonds and
promoting individual fulfillment.
At the core of voluntary engagement lies the natural human desire for connection. Participating in community
service or charitable initiatives cultivates a sense of belonging, linking individuals with like-minded peers who share
similar values and commitments. These shared experiences often lead to the formation of lasting friendships and
networks, as individuals unite under a common purpose. For instance, volunteering at a local shelter not only
addresses immediate community needs but also offers participants an opportunity to connect on a personal level,
thus reinforcing social ties that might otherwise remain superficial.
Moreover, altruism has been shown to contribute significantly to an individual’s mental health. Engaging in
acts of kindness triggers the release of endorphins (内啡肽), the so-called “helper’s high,” which can enhance mood
and promote feelings of happiness. Research by the Journal of Happiness Studies indicates that individuals who
engage in regular volunteer work experience lower rates of depression and anxiety, leading to an overall
improvement in life satisfaction. This psychological uplift extends beyond the individual, as happy people are more
likely to engage positively in their communities, creating a positive cycle of altruism and well-being.
Furthermore, acts of kindness cultivate empathy and inner strength, attributes essential for enduring human
relationships. By actively engaging with diverse communities and understanding the struggles faced by others,
individuals reinforce their capacity for compassion. This deepened empathy not only enhances interpersonal
dynamics but also fosters a more inclusive and understanding society. Additionally, the experiences drawn from
voluntary activity often encourage reflection and personal growth, helping individuals develop coping mechanisms
and emotional perseverance.
In conclusion, the benefits of goodwill extend far beyond the immediate impact of charitable acts. By
fostering interpersonal connections and enhancing emotional well-being, acts of giving play a crucial role in building
stronger, more resilient communities. In a world increasingly characterized by isolation and detachment, the embrace
of altruism presents a powerful solution to reinvigorate ( 使…焕新) human connections and improve individual
mental health. The cultivation of a giving spirit enriches not only the lives of those we help but also our own,
creating a more compassionate and harmonious society. By choosing to engage in giving, we can transform not only
our lives but also the fabric of our communities.
51.What does the word “antidote” most probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A.An effective solution. B.A harmful result. C.A social trend. D.A mental disease.
52.According to the passage, which is an immediate and direct result of engaging in acts of kindness?
A.The release of endorphins that improve mood.
B.The significant improvement of social fairness.
C.The building of lasting friendships and social networks.
D.The cultivation of empathy and emotional resilience.
53.What is the main idea of the essay?
A.Individualism is the root cause of societal problems.
B.Altruism is the only solution to mental health issues.
C.Giving behavior benefit individuals and communities in many ways.
D.Modern society is becoming more and more individualistic and isolated.
54.How is the passage mainly organized?
A.By presenting a problem and then offering several solutions.
B.By stating a claim and supporting it with three arguments.
C.By comparing different views on the value of acts of kindness.
D.By listing historical examples to explain altruistic behavior.
55.Based on the essay, what can be inferred from the passage?
A.People without extra money are not able to participate in charity effectively.
B.Social isolation in modern society is mainly caused by lack of charity.
C.Being kind would have significant impact on health.
D.Being kind can remove depression and anxiety.

Washington is home to lots of trees — it is the Evergreen State, after all — and lots of fireplaces and wood-
burning stoves (炉子) too. But what if you lived there and couldn’t chop wood or couldn’t afford to pay someone to
do it? Luckily, Shane McDaniel and his twin sons, Harrison and Henry McDaniel, 21, are happy to lend an ax. The
three men chop truckloads of wood — then give it away. “I want people who are burning cardboard because they’ve
got nothing.” That’s how Shane explained to heraldnet.com. “Or someone who has a broken shoulder and can’t cut
wood.”
The idea started as a father-son bonding project, he told msn.com. “I had to cut wood along with my dad. He
just loved doing it,” says Shane, 48, a divorced father of six. He wanted to pass along that feeling, so he and the
twins spent the summer of 2018 like a clan of Paul Bunyans. The result was a great wall of wood piled up around
their house in Lake Stevens, 35 miles outside of Seattle. Technically, it was 40 cords — a cord measures four feet
high, four feet wide, and eight feet deep. To buy that much would cost about $10,000.
It was too much for the McDaniels to use themselves, and when the weather turned cold that November,
Shane started thinking of others. He posted on Facebook: “IF YOU ARE IN NEED OF FIREWOOD AND
CANNOT AFFORD IT, PLEASE PM [personal message] ME!... If you know someone who BURNS WOOD, and
they’re looking at a cold house this holiday season, please help me and my boys make sure NO ONE GOES COLD
IN OUR HOOD”.
The response was immediate. One man offered to donate a wood-burning furnace. Others raced over to
Norm’s, the grocery store Shane owns, with more wood for the pile. One woman, noticing the photo of the strong
McDaniel men in the Facebook post, started to show appreciation in other ways. She joked: “Please post more
pictures of you in sleeveless shirts. I don’t need the wood. But truly I appreciate the eye candy!”
56.Who does Shane want to help according to Paragraph 1? (no more than 5 words)
57.Why did Shane involve his sons in the wood-chopping project? (no more than 10 words)
58.What does the last paragraph suggest about Shane’s Facebook post? (no more than 10 words)
