I never knew how important life was until I almost lost my little brother. It all started when
my brother got sick. I was nine, and he was just nine months. At that time, he kept touching his
ear. The first doctor my mother took him to told her that it was an ear disease.
After a week, he was still touching his ear continually. My mother took him to a different
doctor. The doctor ran blood tests on him and thought he should be in the hospital as soon as
possible. At first, the doctors did not know what was wrong with him. A couple of days later, they
found out he had a type of bone marrow(骨髓)cancer.
The doctors tried one round of treatment. It helped, but my brother lost his hair. Then he
needed a bone marrow transplant(移植).They needed to find a bone marrow donor(捐赠者),so
the doctors tested my family first.
I was so afraid to get a shot. My sisters and I were all crying. We got it over with quickly,
and it did not hurt as much as I thought it would. A couple of weeks later, we found out that one of
my sisters and I were both matches. My parents had to choose which one of us should be the
donor. After thinking about it for a long time, they made their decision one Sunday.
That day, after having our lunch, my parents put me on the sofa. With tears filling their eyes,
they told me that they wanted me to be the bone marrow donor because I was older. They asked
me whether I’d like to be the donor. Hearing it, I was excited and nervous.

The day when the jobs were handed out was one of the most exciting moments for all the
children in the class. It took place during the first week of the term. Every kid was given a job for
which they would be responsible during the rest of that school year.
Some jobs were more interesting than others, and the children were eager to be given one of
the best ones. When giving them out, the teacher took into account which pupils had been most
responsible during the previous year. Rita, a kind and quiet girl, had carried out the teacher’s
instructions perfectly. All the children thought Rita would be given the best job. But there was a
big surprise. Each child received a normal job like preparing the computer for lessons, cleaning
the blackboard, or looking after one of the pets. But Rita’s job was very different. She was given a
little box containing some sand and one ant. Though the teacher insisted that this ant was very
special, Rita couldn’t help feeling disappointed. With tears welling up in her eyes, she stood up
and asked why she was given such an insignificant task.
The teacher hugged her, kissed her on her forehead and said, “If you can take good care of
the ant, you are sure to win a reward. After all, you have to do what are apparently the smallest
tasks before being given the most important ones. I believe you can make it.” Most of her
classmates felt sorry for her. They said it was unfair for her.
However, Rita preferred to show the teacher her error by doing something special with that
job of little interest. “I will turn this little task into something great,”Rita said to herself. So, Rita
started investigating everything about her little ant, modified the little box to make it perfect for
the ant and gave the ant the best food, and it ended up growing quite a bit bigger than anyone had
expected.
One day in spring, the classroom door opened and in came a man, who looked very
important. The teacher interrupted the class with great joy, and said, “This is Doctor Martinez, an
entomologist (昆虫学家) from Florida Natural Reserve. He has something special to announce.

On a train to Smithville, a man happened to sit down next to a young man no more than 17
years old. Because the boy was tense, the man wondered what could be worrying him. Whatever it
was, the boy's tension was clear.
The boy kept staring out of the window, paying no attention to anyone else on the train. The
man opened up a book and started reading. Now and then, he would look up and see the boy's face
pressed against the window. He sensed that the boy was fighting to keep from crying.
Finally, the boy asked the man, “Do you know what time it is? And do you know when we are
to arrive at Smithville?”The man gave the boy the time. Then the boy told the man the whole story
of his life. “Four years ago,” he said, “I did something bad hurting my dad, so bad that I had to run
away from home. I couldn't face my father. So I left without even saying goodbye to him. Since
then,I have worked here and there.I never stayed very long in one place. I've been pretty lonely.
Until finally, I decided that I wanted to go back to my father and apologize to him.”
The man went on to ask,“Does your father know you're coming?” And the boy responded,
“He knows I'm coming, but I don't know if he will be there. I sent him a letter.I didn't know if he
would still want me back. I wasn't sure if he would forgive me. So in my letter, I told him that if
he wanted me to come home, he could put a sign on a tree which is a few hundred yards before the
railroad station in Smithville. I told him that I would look for a yellow ribbon(丝带)on one of
the branches of that tree as the train passes. If there is a yellow ribbon on the tree, then I'll get
off.If not, then I'll just keep on riding to wherever this train goes." The two of them were now

Melati and Isabel deeply love their home on the island, surrounded by tropical rain forests,
green fields, and a vast ocean. Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for
them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm
for swimming in the waters near their home. More often than not, plastic bags would be around
them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that.
Melati didn’t think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world
heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They
believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something
meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount
of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. If they could do it, we could do it
too, she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn’t wait to share what she thought with Isabel and
quickened her pace.
“So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It’s so terrible! We have lost the
clean and beautiful beach. Can’t we do something to get it back?” Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a
bit puzzled at what to do, but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as
fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy.
They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That
night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While
Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone. “How amazing that would be! We
are so proud of you!” Dad exclaimed. Mom came up, gave them a thumb up and hugged the
sisters.

Cheemi was a poor orphan living in Pune. Nobody knew where she had come from. Yet
everyone accepted the frail little girl and named her Cheemi — the little sparrow. She helped
people by doing odd jobs for them, such as fetching vegetables from the corner shop or looking
after babies when their mothers went shopping.
Everybody in the neighbourhood liked Cheemi, except Kelly. Kelly was the richest woman
there. Cheemi, in her eyes, was dirty and inferior to her. Therefore, she would not allow Cheemi
into her big house. The house was almost like a mansion with big wooden carved doors and huge
halls. Surprisingly, the windows of the rooms decorated with beads and curtains were very small.
Kelly lived with her son, her daughter-in-law Gina and her little grandson, Carl. Carl was a
great favourite with the girls. Gina was a very nice, educated lady and didn’t mind Carl being
carried by others. Kelly, however, never allowed Cheemi to touch Carl. How Cheemi wished she
could play with him!
That year, Panshet Dam collapsed and the waters of the Mutha river, near Pune, had entered
the city. The water rose fast. There was confusion everywhere. Police vans were trying to help.
When water entered their house, Kelly and Gina were on the ground floor. Within seconds
the water rose. The police persuaded Kelly and Gina to climb to the top floor. In the hurry and
confusion, they forgot that Carl was sleeping on the first floor!
The staircases were flooded. It was impossible to get to the bedroom on the first floor. The
door to the room was closed but not bolted(闩上). Any moment the water could rush in. The
women panicked. “Carl!” they cried. “What will happen to our Carl?”
Suddenly the police discovered that one of the bedroom windows was open, but it was too
small for an adult to crawl in. Only a child could. But no one was willing to let their children take
the risk.

Make a Nest for My Doves
I sat at the breakfast table with my eight-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in
my stomach."Mama, want to play?""Not today, baby."I shook my head. These days I could barely
get out of bed. I was still recovering from an operation. I hoped for strength and happiness, but
the future seemed so hopeless.
Suddenly, Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor."Bird!"he shouted, rushing
to our courtyard. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated in a rubber tree(橡胶树). It sat there
for a few moments, and then flew away. Strange, I'd never seen one in our neighborhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was
with a mate carrying sticks."Look, Matthew,"I said, pointing to the tree."They're going to make a
nest."The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.
Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he'd run into the kitchen and
take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. His happiness was
influential. As much as I was sad, I couldn't help but look forward to the doves' visits too.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree's
broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew throwing the doves' nest to
the ground. I heard the twigs(细枝)break apart.
I surveyed the damage. Nothing good ever lasted. I wouldn't blame the doves if they never
came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been
their nest. They started again from the beginning. Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard
work. The next day, and the next, they started again, as if nothing had happened.

It had been a year since Susan, an attractive young woman of 34 became blind and she was
suddenly thrown into a world of darkness, anger, frustration and self-pity. And all she had to cling
to was her husband, Mark.
Mark, an Air Force officer, loved Susan with all his heart and he was determined to help his
wife gain the strength and confidence she needed to become independent again. Finally, Susan felt
ready to return to her job, but how would she get there? Mark volunteered to drive her to work
each day, even though they worked at opposite ends of the city.
At first, this comforted Susan. Soon, however, Mark decided that Susan had to start taking
the bus again on her own. But she was still so fragile, so angry — how would she react?
Just as he predicted, Susan was horrified at the idea of taking the bus again. “How am I
supposed to know where I am going? I feel like you’re abandoning me.” she responded bitterly.
Mark’s heart broke to hear these words, but he knew what had to be done. He promised
Susan that he would ride the bus with her, for as long as it took, until she got the hang of it.
For two solid weeks, Mark, in military uniform, accompanied Susan to and from work each
day. He taught her everything to adapt to her new environment, including befriending the bus
drivers who could watch out for her, and save her a seat.
Finally, Susan decided to try the trip on her own. Monday morning arrived, she said goodbye
to Mark, and for the first time, they went their separate ways.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday... Each day on her own went perfectly, and Susan
had never felt better. She was doing it!
On Friday morning, as she was paying the fare to get off the bus as usual, the driver said,
“Young lady, I sure do envy you.” Surprised and curious, she asked the driver, “Why do you say
that you envy me?”

Frey grabbed his bat and glove, and raced out of the door towards the Jack’s. Summer
vacation just began. The boys planned to play baseball every day, so they could make the team in
the following semester.
Jack was waiting outside for Frey. “What are you doing? Where’s your stuff?” Frey asked,
lifting his bat onto his shoulder. Jack shook his head, “I have to clean Mr. Willow’s garage before I
can go. With his broken arm, he can’t do it himself. My mom always volunteers me to help the
Willows. She thinks they’re kind of old and can’t afford to hire a cleaner.
To get the work done earlier, Frey offered to help. The boys went down the block to the
Willow’s and got started. They found a couple of brooms. Before they swept, they put boxes
scattered around the garage floor on shelves. As Jack put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it
fell an envelope. He picked it up. It wasn’t sealed, so he opened it. Out of his surprise, there were
several one hundred dollar bills inside.
“You’ve got to see this. ” He pulled out the bills and showed Frey, “It just fell down when the
box fell. There’s got to be several hundred dollars here.” Jack looked past Frey to the garage door
and continued, “Nobody’s here. If we take some, I bet no one will ever know.” Before his voice
died away, Jack had already drawn out one bill and stuffed it into his pocket.
Frey frowned and shook his head, “Are you crazy? That’s stealing.” Jack ignored him and
protested, “Well, I do a lot of chores for them and don’t get paid. It’s not really stealing. It’s kind
of payment for my hard work. And one hundred will do for a bat and glove in I go’s Sports
Stores.” With this, Jack put the rest money back.
Frey was about to grab the money from Jack’s pocket when they heard a voice, “Hello, boys.

As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Jane’s dream to be a singer on the stage.
At an early age, she was crazy about singing. Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her
heart’s content. Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my power to
support her. Soon after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance
and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to sing. Jane practiced so hard that before long
she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later, Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver
knocked her down. She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my
daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been
thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to fall to the ground when someone took
hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace,
Jane needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the
ward with Mary.
That night, Jane recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand,
I said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong
girl, Jane. Don’t worry. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down
Jane’s cheeks.
After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently
visited her. Jane eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair.
Never did she refer to the subject of singing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl,
who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us.
