In 1989, I was away from my home in Malaysia attending the University of Kansas in the USA.I found an
advertisement for a summer job as a programmer at Ulm in what was then West Germany. I submitted my
application and got an interview. What made me pleased was that I was offered the job after the interview. I thought
it was a good opportunity to see part of a new continent.
Both Malaysia and the USA emerged from Britain, so we have common standards for the way many things are
done. Naturally, I expected things at Ulm would be different—big things, like language and culture—but I never
expected small cultural differences would affect me. For example, I was surprised that little things like how doors
fit into doorframes were different. The bread was also very different. While it was fun at first to eat the various
kinds of food, after some time I longed for the white, square and soft bread I was used to. And the big things were
not that bad: the folks in the city of Ulm mostly didn’t speak English well but were very friendly and helpful.
One of these small differences, however, tripped me up early in my stay. The first few days, my employer put
me up in a bed-and-breakfast hotel. Then I found a small studio apartment to rent. It was evening by the time I got
settled in. Since there were all-night grocery stores in the US and grocery stores in Malaysia were open late at
night, I made a habit of going out to buy some food and other necessities like soap for the shower. But to my
surprise and horror, every single shop was closed! I was alone with no food or any other kind of necessary items. I
wandered around hopelessly in the street for a while.

For courage, my fingers hold tight to the harness (挽具) on Chó’s broad back as we pass my neighbor’s fence.
Chó is my guide dog, a German Shepherd (德国牧羊犬). Walking by Mr. Groll’s yard is the best part of our
morning walk and also the worst. It is the best part because the roses talk to us. “Good morning, Chó,” whisper the
roses’ sweet smell to Chó’s nose. Other roses shout to me, “Hello, Mai!” with a smell that bursts as firecrackers.
Now comes the worst part-the unfriendly neighbor that shades us: Mr. Groll. I greet him as I do every morning.
And like every other morning, he does not answer me. But I know he’s there, watching, behind his fence.
Maybe he’s afraid of me because I’m blind. Disabilities scare grown-ups sometimes. Then I remember:
yesterday I heard him playing checkers with my friend Jimmy, who’s in a wheelchair. Why does Mr. Groll ignore
me? He likes roses. I like roses. Why can’t two people who like roses like each other? It’s a mystery (谜) to me.
Papa has told me that some folks do not like people from faraway places. Does this solve the mystery? Maybe
Mr. Groll does not like Vietnamese neighbors. No, that can’t be it. Every Saturday Mr. Groll and my big brother,
Lien, help each other with yard work. They are friends. Well, then, maybe he doesn’t like me because I’m a girl.
The sidewalk hums beneath my feet. A skateboard speeds by. “Hello, Mai and Chó!” my friend Jana shouts, “Hi,
Mr. Groll.” I wait. If Mr. Groll ignores Jana, then the mystery is solved. But his voice calls out, “Hello, Jana!” The
sound of it breaks my heart.
Now I know something I didn’t know before: some people who can see can be blind. Sometimes, their hearts
don’t see any better than my eyes do. And I also know that unfriendly Mr. Groll likes Jimmy.
And Lien. And Jana. But not me and Chó! Suddenly, an idea brightens my mystery. Maybe I do know why Mr.
Groll doesn’t talk to me! “Down,” I command. Chó does as I say.

shop, but not recently because of Rosa. Rosa was my sister, just one month old, who was settled in my old
bedroom. For ten years, the small room was full of my toys and books. But now it was transformed into her baby
room, decorated like a garden with pinks and yellows. My space, my old life, was gone.
“Here we are!” We arrived at the shop, a wave of colour and sweet smell washing over me. My aunt said I
could pick some flowers for Mum and Dad. I used to love this, but today I was so overcome with tiredness and
envy. Why bother to bring them flowers when they were enjoying Rosa at home without me?
Silently I helped my aunt arrange flowers. “Your mum told me there hasn’t been much shut eye recently for
any of you.” “Not much, since Rosa the alarm clock was installed (安装).” I complained with a huge yawn (哈欠).
“I remember having to creep (蹑手蹑脚地走) around like a worn-out mouse when your mum was a baby. I
spent the first months hating her so much.” “But you and Mum seem so close,” I said, guiltily hiding away my envy
of Rosa.
“Now we are. But it took me years to grow into the role of big sister. Few flowers blossom (绽放) overnight,
you know.” She pulled me in for aside hug, glancing up at the clock, and suggested I take a walk outside.
Behind her shop was a field dotted with spring flowers. Stepping into the field, I began to pick little flowers. It
was like gathering my childhood memories. I remembered how I’d sit with Dad, making flower chains, crowning
(授予) each other with the silliest titles: Queen of Junk Food and King of Mess. My smile grew wider. The shining
yellow flowers reminded me of the color in Rosa’s baby room. Was she awake? I wondered.

Shama was sitting in the bedroom which she shared with her sister Dolly, watching the goldfish Peepy in the
glass bowl. The goldfish swam round and round. For a while Shama did nothing except stare at it. The fish lookedsad, Shama thought. It seemed unhappy being in the small bowl.
Just then she heard her mother call her and her sister Dolly for breakfast. Shama said to her mother. “It’s
Sunday today.I want to go to the lake. We go there on every Sunday.”
“We can’t go today, dear. A storm is coming. It’s dangerous.” Mom was always like that, concerned about
safety of her kids. Shama made a face. Breakfast was over. Shama watched her mother washing the dishes. She
loved the rushing sound of water. That was why she loved the lake too.
Mom said she didn’t feel well and wanted to have a sleep. She had gone to her bedroom.
“Shama,” Dolly whispered, leaning as close to Shama as possible. “Let’s go.”
“Where?”
“To the lake, where else?” This was a surprise for Shama. It was a daring suggestion.
“Mom doesn’t want us. There’s a storm coming.” Shama said in a whisper.
“No, there isn’t. Mom just doesn’t want us to go. Let her be fast asleep; then we’ll tiptoe out.” Hearing that,
Shama’s face broke into a smile.
“Are you sure? Mom will be mad if we get caught.”
“We’ll come back in time. Mom ‘sleeps tight.” Dolly, gave a naughty smile.
It would be an adventure that both of them would slip out. It was a really exciting idea. Shama had never done
such a thing. before.
But the fact was that the door was locked by Mom. Dolly ran towards the window. The window wasn’t locked.
She smiled and said,“That’s great!”
Dolly got back into her room and a few minutes later, she came out, holding a plastic bag filled with water.

you do not want others to do to you.” But when she thought over her past conduct, a blush of shame crept to her
cheeks, as many little acts of selfishness and unkindness came back to her memory. She resolved that for the future,
both in great things and small. she would remember and follow the Golden Rule.
It was not long after this that an opportunity occurred, which tried Susan’s principles. One Saturday evening
when she went, as usual, to Mr. Thompson’s inn, to receive the money of her mother’s washing for him, which
amounted to five dollars, she found Mr. Thompson apparently in a terrible rage with some horse dealers with whom
he had been bargaining. He held in his hand an open pocketbook (钱袋子) , full of bills and scarcely noticing Susan
as she made her request, except to swear at her for troubling him when he was busy, he handed her a banknote.
Glad to escape so easily, Susan hurried out of the gate. Pausing to put the money safely in her purse, she
discovered that he had given her two bills instead of one. She looked around; nobody was near and her first impulse
was joy at the unexpected prize.
“It is all mine,” said she to herself. “I will buy my mother a new coat with it, and she can give her old one to
my sister Mary, and then Mary can go to the Sunday school with me next winter. I wonder if I can buy a pair of
shoes for my brother Tom, too.”
At that moment she remembered that he must have given it to her by mistake. But again the voice of the
tempter whispered, “He gave it, and how do you know that he did not intend to make you a present of it? Keep it!
He will never know it, for he had too many such bills in that great pocketbook.”

The first of June, the King family was going on holiday tomorrow. The girls no longer had to do housework
for the family, so there would be three months’ free time for them, and all the girls cheered up, jumping up and
down with excitement. “Vacation, finally!” shouted Meg, coming home to find Jo already lying on the sofa. Theystarted to plan what they would do on the vacation. All the girls reached an agreement that they would not do
anything for a while, but play all the time and rest if their mother didn’t mind. “May we all try what we want to do,
Mother?” asked Meg. Mrs March agreed to the plan and said they could try the experiment for a week. “It will be
wonderful, I’m sure,” said Meg. “Fun forever, and no work!” cried Jo.
The next morning, Meg spent the morning with a friend and the afternoon reading in the apple tree. Jo pulled
all her toys out of her closet but then left them to play some music. Amy put on her best dress and went outside to
draw, hoping someone would notice the beautiful young artist. No one appeared, so she went for a walk, got caught
in the rain, and came home dripping.
In the evening, they all assured their mother the experiment was going well. She smiled, said nothing, and did
her work, keeping their home pleasant and running smoothly.
The week seemed to get longer and longer with nothing much to do, and it affected all three girls. Meg found
time hanging heavily and read till her eyes hurt and she was sick of books. Jo sometimes suddenly shook her doll
and shouted at it. Amy was quite bored, for she didn’t like dolls or reading, and she couldn’t draw all the time. By
Friday the girls were glad that it was nearly over, but no one would admit that they were tired of the experiment.
On Saturday morning, the girls got up to find no breakfast and no mother to be seen.

James Selton was one of the naughtiest boys in the village. He would rarely pass people in the street without
being guilty of some sort of abuse. If a person were well dressed he would cry out, “Dandy(花花公子)!” If a
person’s clothes were dirty or torn, he would throw stones at him to annoy him .
One afternoon, a stranger passed through the village. His dress neat and clean, he carried a cane in his hand, on
the end of which was a bag, and he wore an elegant hat. Spotting the stranger, James winked to his playmates, and
said, “Now for some fun!” He then silently reached the stranger from behind, and, knocking off his hat, ran away.
The man turned and saw him, but James was out of hearing before he could speak.
The stranger put on his hat, and went on his way. Again James approached; but this time, the man caught him
by the arm, and held him fast. However, he contented himself with looking James a moment in the face, and thenpushed him away. Free again, he began to throw at the stranger with dirt and stones. But he was frightened when
he saw the man struck on the head by a brick, and badly hurt.
All the boys now ran away, and James sneaked across the fields to his home.
As he drew near the house, his sister Caroline came out to meet him, holding up a delicate gold chain and
some new books for him to see. She told James, as fast as she could talk, that their uncle, who had been away
several years, came home, and was now in the house with beautiful presents for the whole family; that he had left
his carriage at the hotel a mile off, and walked here to surprise his brother, their father. She said that on his way
some wicked boys threw stones at him, and hit him just over the eye, and that mother had bound up the wound.

I was nineteen years old the first time I saw my own true character. At least I can say that my true character
changed that day.
For about a year, my voyage to and from work each day included a ten-minute walk through the heart of
downtown Toronto. As with most large cities, the homeless population of Toronto often gathered on down-town
corners, asking pedestrians (行人) for their spare change. Like most busy citizens, I learned to ignore the nameless
faces who begged me for money each day. In my eyes, they are on the streets because they choose to be.
I remember how particularly cold the weather had been that day. I passed the usual crowd of homeless
beggars, ignored all of them, and continued walking. As I crossed an intersection (交叉路口), I saw him sitting
against a building, holding a white cup in front of him. I heard his shaky voice target me as I sped past him.
“Spare some change?” he asked.
I didn’t even bother looking up at his nameless face. “I have no money on me,” I said quickly.
Looking back now, I feel as though fate had set out that day to teach me a lesson. Just a few feet past him, I
slipped on the icy road. I lay on the ground for several moments wondering if I had broken my leg. Then I heard a
familiar voice only inches above me.“Are you all right?” he asked.
I knew immediately that this was the man I had just rushed past. I saw the smooth, sympathetic look in his
eyes.
I held his hand as I struggled to get to my feet. He held my arm as I hobbled (跛行) to the nearby bus stop.
The pain in my leg told me that I needed an X-ray.
“My name is Mike,” he said. “You really shouldn’t try walking on that leg. You really need to get it checked
by a doctor,” he said with deep concern.
“This bus goes past the hospital,” I said quickly, pointing to the bus sign above me.

When I was a kid in Pennsylvania, my family rehabilitated (使康复) wild animals.
I grew up with animals running around the house. We would go travelling to Bermuda and I would watch the
whales off the shore. I fell in love with them and wanted to know more about what they got up to underwater. Now
I've been studying whales for more than30 years and I am the president of the Center for Whale Research and
Conservation.
In 2017, I was on a boat around Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, working on a film about whale conservation.
The crew wanted to get more footage of me in the water with the humpback whales — I often slip in quietly to
record their behaviour for research. Seeing a couple of humpbacks in the distance, I slid off the boat wearing a
mask and swam towards them.
As I was approaching, one of the male humpbacks came right up to me, touching me with his head and
pushing me through the water. It caught me off-guard — in 33 years of doing this work, this had never happened. I
put my arm out and tried to push myself away while he attempted to roll up me under his pectoral fin (胸鳍).
My scientist brain was in overdrive as I tried to work out what he was doing. I felt a mixed sense of
excitement and fear. Then the whale swam underneath me and lifted me out of the water on his fin. I signaled to theboat, then — swoosh — I was pushed back under.
After minutes of being pushed around by the humpback, I saw what I thought was a second, smaller whale.
But then I noticed the tail — whales move theirs up and down, and this one was moving side to side. I realized with
horror that it belonged to a huge, 18-foot tiger shark. Tiger sharks are known to attack people, sometimes fatally (致

Life at thirteen was tough for me. On the one hand, I had to adapt to my changing body; on the other hand, I
was forced to deal with the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded suburb. I had to stop travelling
around quiet country with my cute buddies, riding on the back of my handsome companion, a small brown pony.
When we moved, I was forced to sell him. The moment he was taken away, I was grasped by a strange thought. I
was abandoned. Feeling helpless and alone, I couldn’t eat or sleep, and I cried all of the time. I missed my friends,
my country home and my pony. Finally, my parents, realizing how much I missed my pony, purchased an old red
horse— Orion for me at a local market.
Orion was without doubt the ugliest horse in the world. He was pigeon-toed and knock-kneed. But I didn’t
care about his weaknesses. I loved him beyond all reason. I joined a riding club and endured rude comments and
mean snickers (窃笑) about Orion’s looks. I never let on about how I felt, but deep down inside, my heart was
breaking. The other members rode beautiful registered horses. When Orion and I entered the events where the horse
is judged on appearance, we were quickly “shown the gate”. No amount of brushing, vitamins or unconditional love
would turn Orion into a beauty. I finally realized that my only chance to compete would be in the timed-speed
events.
I chose “barrel racing” (绕桶赛) . There were so many experienced competitors with their lovely partners. It
looked like they have got it in the bag, laughing, greeting and chatting with each other. One girl named Ann rode a
big brown thorough bred (受过严格训练的) horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless tosay, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to
last. The stinging memory of Ann’s laughs made me determined to beat her.

When we first met Lucky, we were surprised at his mini figure. The Labrador (拉布拉多) dog was born last
Friday and was one of the four babies. He was the tiniest one we had ever seen, weighing less than 150 grams at
birth.
The newborn puppy had a low body temperature and kept trembling all the time. The dog mother seemed too
tired to nurse the weakest one while feeding other kids. He was so weak that we didn’t think he could make it to the
morning.
I, along with my eight-year-old daughter, Alice, the smallest one in our family, stayed up with him all night.
We milked his mother and used an small-sized bottle to hand-feed him. When Lucky got too sleepy to eat, we put
honey on his gums (牙龈) to give his low blood sugar a quick boost, an old trick we’d learned from other dog
keepers.
I slept on the couch with him on top of me. Alice held the little dog to raise his body temperature, but it failed.
He still trembled with cold. Then we used a thermos (热水瓶) and changed the hot water every two hours.
Meanwhile, We constantly checked the thermos temperature to avoid burning his delicate skin.
The next day, to our relief, Lucky took a turn for the better. His body temperature recovered to normal, but he
appeared hungry. We started to nurse him with a regular baby bottle.
On our farm we have 15 goats plus chickens and dogs. But Lucky was too little to keep outside. Worrying that
other animals could have pushed him around or harmed him, we decided to keep him indoors. We were fortunate to
meet the neatest one-because he rarely made messes.

It was a dream born in fire. Andrea Peterson was 5 when she was trapped on the ledge (窗台) of a burning
building.
“Throw the kid down!” said one of the firemen below, whose eyes are firm and courageous, along with
professional rescue techniques. Seeing this, little Andrea jumped into lifesaving arms and a life-long ambition: She
wanted to fight fires as her rescuers did.
She told that to the men who had saved her, and they laughed naturally the way grown-ups do when a kid says
he wants to be an astronaut or a sports star. But this was back in a time when little girls weren’t even allowed to
fantasize (幻想) about such grand goals.
“You’ll be a good mommy,” the firemen told her. “You’ll be a good teacher, maybe you’ll be a nurse, but you
can never be a fireman.”
Indeed, life sidelined her ambitious dream. She was studying for a degree in aviation technology (航空科技)
and that’s where she met her husband, Dennis. Unfortunately, Dennis was diagnosed with cancer. Peterson spent 31
years caring for the man she loved, and in 2007, when Dennis was about to leave, he was at peace but worried for
her. “But what are you going to do?” “I’ll be fine,” she told him.
At 61, she attended a course for emergencies. She went on an ambulance ride-along from time to time. It
turned out to be a life-and-death situation, which reminded her of the childhood experience back in the fire. But
every time she saw people who were in need were successfully rescued, Peterson felt that long-ago childhood
calling. She earned her emergency medical technician license and responded to fire calls with the ambulance. She
found that her years of tending to Dennis had prepared her for dealing with the variety of hurts and ills. The inside
calling echoed increasingly stronger.
