Once, a small village farmer had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to a village money lender. The
money lender was old, unmarried and fancied of marrying the farmer’s beautiful daughter.
One day, the farmer went to the money lender to ask him for some more time to return the loan. The money
lender pretended to be angry for a while and then proposed a bargain (交易). The money lender said that if the farmer
could not repay his debt, he would be punished or he had an option to let him marry his daughter and all his debt
would be forgiven.
Both the farmer and his daughter were frightened by the proposal. There was no way the farmer could pay
back the money soon but he did not want his beautiful daughter to marry the old and cruel money lender.
In an attempt to persuade the farmer to accept his deal, the tricky money lender made an attractive condition
in deciding the fate (命运) of the father and daughter. He would keep a black and a white pebble (鹅卵石) in a bag.
The girl then had to choose a pebble which would decide her fate. If she picked the black pebble, she would have to
marry the money lender and her father’s debt would be forgiven. If she picked the white pebble, she did not need to
marry the money lender and her father’s debt would still be forgiven. If she refused to pick the pebble, the farmer
would be thrown into prison.
They were standing on a path filled with pebbles. The money lender even called the nearby villagers to witness
the event, so that no party could walk away from their words. The money lender bent over, picked two pebbles and
kept them in a money bag. The sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked two black pebbles instead of a black and a
white. He then asked the girl to pick a pebble from the bag.

My mother believed in using things up. Last year, our cornfield had a bad harvest because birds feasted on the
crops. It was probably then that Mom’s frugality(节俭)became even more extraordinary. She began keeping everything
that seemed useless in the attic(阁楼)—worn-out clothes, old sheets, broken umbrellas, and some other old items.
Mom’s favorite saying was “waste not, want not”(俭以防匮). My brother Josh and I weren’t sure what that meant
until the “Affair of the Scarecrow(稻草人)”, which, as it later became known, left a lasting impression on us.
The story began with a pretty hat that Mom received as a gift to protect her from the sun. However, Josh and
I could see that Mom’s frugal nature and fashion sense were in battle. Mom really didn’t want to get rid of the hat
—it was new and had a lot of use left in it—but neither could she stand wearing it. She tried to take off the fancy
decorations, but they were stuck on tight. She’d have to find some other solution.
Josh and I watched as Mom headed upstairs to the attic with the hat. “Waste not, want not,” she called back
down. We heard boxes being moved around. Moments later, Mom leaned out, holding a flour bag full of straw, and
with a mysterious smile, she placed the hat on it.
“What is that for?” I asked, confused. “A scarecrow! ” Mom exclaimed. “But not a good one yet.It needs a
strong body to stand firm in the field,” she said with a frown. “And it doesn’t look scary enough,” Josh remarked. I
had to admit that Josh, though younger than I was, could sometimes be more imaginative. Josh and I turned to each
other, searching for a good idea. Soon enough, Josh’s eyes lit up with inspiration.

Armed with two over-packed suitcases,we arrived at the airport just in time for my flight. “Well, here we are,
the airport,” my sister said with a sigh. As I watched her unload my luggage, I could see the sadness in her eyes. This
was not easy on her either. We had both been dreading (害怕) this moment for the past week. One last hug and a final
good-bye and I would be on my way to a new life abroad, leaving my beloved sister behind.
All my life I had loved airports. To me they were some kind of magic gateway to the world,a place from which
to start great holidays and adventures. But today it seemed like a cold and heartless place. I looked at my sister and
even though her eyes were filled with tears, she was trying to keep a brave face. “You’d better go or you’ll miss your
flight,” she said.
“I’ll miss you,” I replied, and with those last words I was off. As promised, I did not look back, but by the
time I reached the customs office I was sobbing (啜泣). “Cheer up, love,” the tall customs officer said with a smile.
“It’s not the end of the world, you know.” But to me it was the end of the world, as I had known it.
While boarding the plane I was still crying. I did not have the energy to put my bag in the overhead locker,
so I stuffed it on the empty seat next to mine. As I settled into my chair, a feeling of sadness overwhelmed me. I felt
like my best friend had just been taken away from me.
Growing up, my sister and I would do everything together. Born barely fifteen months apart we not only looked
alike, we were alike. Whenever one of us need something, the other one would come along. When the time came for
us to go to college, we also went together. But now that our college days were over and I was off to a foreign country,
all I had left were my memories.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND is my favorite story of all time. And acting is my number one passion. So when
my sixth-grade teacher announced during my first week at Newland Elementary that we’d be performing it for the
school play, I practically screamed out loud with excitement. I’d always wanted to play the role of Alice!
Luckily, I stopped the scream before it really escaped. In Poulsbo, I’d starred in every play from third grade
on. I played my first role as Tinkerbell in Peter Pan. And after that, backflips (后空翻) just couldn’t compare. All my
friends were in the plays, too, and we’d had so much fun together! And I just knew that if I could star as Alice, life at
Newland Elementary would be a lot more fun.
Mrs. Peason, our teacher, announced, “The role of Alice goes to Taylor! ” My head buzzed. My stomach
erupted like a volcano. But I clapped along with everyone else and put a fake smile on my face. It took Mrs. Pearson
forever to get to my name. When she finally did, she read, “Hazel, Tyler, and Ella-hedgehogs (刺猬)!” She announced
this as if we’d just won a million dollars. But the hedgehogs had no lines. Mrs. Pearson looked at us expectantly. I
cast an eye on the other two. Ella looked as if she were about to cry. Tyler looked as if he’d just eaten a piece of bad
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司cheese.
The next day we had our first rehearsal. “I really wanted to be Alice,” I said, knowing that they were both
wonderful dancers and wanted to do something different instead of being a hedgehog. “Since you just moved here,
you probably didn’t know that Taylor has gotten all the starring roles since kindergarten. The rest of us just have to
take what’s left.” Ella said. “Oh,” I said, startled. In Poulsbo, I’d been the one who’d gotten every starring role. I’d
never even wondered if maybe the other kids had felt bad about that.

As a Texan, I’m not experienced in driving in snowy, icy road conditions. So, that snowy February morning I
was unwilling to travel twenty-five miles to work, hoping to receive a text message from my school telling me that
school would be closed for the day.
However, the text message never came. So I warmed up my car, melting (融化) the fresh layer of ice on the
window, and then left for campus, slowly driving my car along city streets. To my relief, the road workers had treated
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司streets with sand and salt, making them less dangerous. Nevertheless, I still drove carefully, keeping a safe distance
between my car and the cars in front of me. Despite all my carefulness, I was still afraid of hitting another car because
of the bad road conditions.
My heart raced and I told myself, “Relax. You will be fine.”But in a flash, the clouds disappeared and blinding
snow came. My heart beat even faster. Within minutes, the blowing snow mixed together with the existing snow.
Visibility was instantly reduced to near zero. Directional signs quickly were out of sight. The road itself disappeared, as
did all the cars around me. I had no sense of direction, and no idea what I should do.
Suddenly, I hit a large piece of ice and my car began sliding. I was scared out of my mind. There were too many
vehicles running slowly on the street. A sense of complete helplessness and fear enveloped me. I held the steering
wheel (方向盘) harder, staring at my sweaty, trembling (颤抖的) hands, unsure what to do because I didn’t have the
skills or experience to control myself out of the slide, let alone avoid crashing into other cars.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the
house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having
wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even

The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried
silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears, “Even a stranger
on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for
me. She is so merciless compares to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you
thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you up since you were a baby. Can you number the times she
cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat here, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered mother’s familiar face and weathered hands.
“Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my
mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she

Helen was putting her dress on. It was a bit small, but she could manage.
She would be getting the rent with her father, Mr. Resnick, today. Helen didn’t often get to spend time with her
father these days. He was always working, and always trying to make enough money to support the family. The rent
was what kept them going during the Depression (经济大萧条). When Helen worried about her too-tight dress, other
children had to worry about food or even their homes.
The houses were not far, and three families lived there. Everything went smoothly at the first two apartments,
but both Helen and her father were worried about the third. The Katz family never had enough money, and it had
become harder and harder to accept their rent, even though her father had lowered it.
Mrs. Katz opened the door when Helen’s father knocked. “Her eyes were red—from crying,” Helen thought.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Resnick,” she said, hands nervously smoothing her gray dress.
“How are you, Mrs. Katz?” he asked.
“We’re. we’re getting by (勉强度日),” she said, but she wouldn’t meet his eyes or even Helen’s. “You’re
here for the rent.”
“Yes, Mrs. Katz, I’m afraid so.”
“Please come in.”
Inside of the apartment, Mr. Katz and the two children were sitting at a table, waiting for Mr. Resnick. “They all
have such thin faces!” Helen thought. She was embarrassed, suddenly, by her own round cheeks and strong body.
Mrs. Katz gave Helen’s father the money. He thanked her and turned to go.
“Mr. Resnick?” Mrs. Katz said before they could leave. He turned to look at her. In a shaking voice she told him,
“We haven’t eaten in two days.”

Swim Buddies
I leaned (倚靠) over the side of the beat and stared at the clear blue water. This was my last chance, I thought.
“I hope you find a green turtle (乌龟) today, Alexa, and realize your dream of swimming with it.” Dad said, as if
reading my thought. “Me, too,” my brother, Jonah, said. “I want to see one, too!”
I lifted my head up, turned toward Jonah, and glared. Why, why, why did he always insist on following me
everywhere, doing everything I did? Make your own friends. I wanted to scream at him. Find your own green sea
turtle! But I said nothing. Ever since Jonah was a little kid and they discovered he acted so differently because he had
autism (自闭症), I had been trained to show understanding for him. Trained to put up with a lot, including his shouts at
the top of his lungs.
“We’ll stop here, and if we are lucky enough to see turtles.” Father said, “remember not to get too close, or they
will be scared away. Do the ‘dead man’s float’ and wait. If they’re curious enough, they’ll cheek you out.”
Jonah said — too loudly, of course, so everyone on the boat could hear him —“That turtle sounds just like me.
It wants to be friends but doesn’t know how, like me. I really, really, really want to see one, Dad.”
Putting the mouthpiece into my mouth, I dived into the water. I swam in a different direction and searched the
seafloor. Suddenly, I saw a huge green turtle chewing on the seaweed. Excited as I was, I did the dead man’s float,
lying as still as possible. “Come on, buddy (伙伴).” I said to myself, “Come swim with me!”
As I watched than lonely turtle, I couldn’t help bust think of Jonah’s words about friends — Jonah didn’t have

学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司The long-awaited summer vacation finally came, and I immediately headed for Grandpa’s countryside home
with excitement. I was looking forward to seeing Grandpa and playing with my best friend, Steve, his smart dog.
Life in the countryside was great. I enjoyed Grandpa’s tasty vegetable soup and had a lot of fun playing with
Steve. We explored the woods, chased (追逐) birds, and tried fishing by the stream, laughing all the while.
One day, Grandpa went to the farm to get fresh pumpkins and tomatoes for a big dinner. While waiting for him
to come back, I felt a bit bored.
“Steve, let’s have some fun!” I declared, and with a wag (摇摆) of his tail, he excitedly agreed.
Our game of hide-and-seek filled the house with laughter. “You can’t catch me!” I laughed, hiding and running
away from Steve. But Steve was so smart that he could always find me, whether in the bedroom or the cupboard.
However, while we were having fun, something unexpected happened. Suddenly there was a loud crash in the
living room, breaking the calm like a stone disturbing a quiet pond. It turned out that I accidentally knocked over a
mirror while playing. The mirror, once neat and pretty on the table, was now broken pieces on the floor because of
our playful game.
My heart pounded as I looked at the mess. The wind blew through the open window, making the curtains
waving in the wind, which upset me even more. I didn’t know what to do with the broken mirror. Should I tell
Grandpa or try to hide what had happened? I thought about it, and Steve lowered his ears. It seemed that he also
realized that we had made a huge mistake. “What should we do, Steve?” I asked quietly, trying to find comfort.
It was a tough decision, and I felt really guilty. Admitting the mistake seemed hard.
Suddenly I had an idea — maybe I could put the blame on Steve alone.

It was a hot summer day when my world turned upside down. The sun shone brightly and the sky seemed to be
painted in an endless shade of blue. Little did I know that this particular day would become rooted in my memory
forever.
I woke up with a sense of excitement; it was the first day of the summer camp. I had been looking forward to
this day for weeks, imagining the adventures, new friends, and endless fun that awaited me. I quickly dressed in my
favorite camp T-shirt and shorts, my backpack filled with snacks and a water bottle, eagerly anticipating the day
ahead.
As I arrived at the camp, the energy was contagious (有感染力的). The air was filled with laughter, chatter, and
the promise of an unforgettable summer. I quickly made friends with Sarah, a girl with a contagious smile, and we
became really close over our shared love for adventure.
The camp was a wonderland, with activities ranging from sports to arts and crafts. I felt like I was ready to
absorb every bit of knowledge and experience that came my way. The day went by quickly as we laughed through
games, amazed at nature hikes, and cheered each other on during various sports activities. The sun seemed to run
against the clock, reminding us to enjoy every moment before it was too late.
However, the day took an unexpected turn when a teacher announced an unexpected activity-a team-building
exercise involving a high ropes course. I had always been afraid of heights, but the excitement of the challenge mixed
with the encouragement from my newfound friends pushed me to give it a try.
Standing at the base of the towering structure, my heart raced like a runaway train. Each step up the ladder felt
heavier. A sense of panic gradually began to catch me.

Tom was a skilled teenage surfer. He had always been attracted by the ocean and the challenge of riding its
waves. He had trained tirelessly for years, sharpening his skills and perfecting his technique. He had participated in
many competitions and won several titles. But one day, his world was turned upside down.
It was a routine training day. While Tom was concentrating on his training in the sea, a shark came in through
the broken shark-proof net and approached him. The animal knocked over Tom’s surfboard and bit his right leg,
tearing through his flesh (肉体) and causing massive damage. Despite the seriousness of his injuries, Tom was lucky
to survive the attack. He was rushed to the hospital, where he received an emergency operation. With the efforts of
doctors, his leg was saved.
Tom’s recovery was long and painful, but he refused to give up on his dream of surfing. At first, his progress
was slow. He had to learn to walk again, and then to run, and then to jump. Every movement was a struggle. But with
the help of his family and friends, as well as his own fierce determination, Tom gradually began to make progress. He
spent hours every day in the gym, doing strength and balance exercises to rebuild his body.
Finally, after months of hard work, Tom was ready to get back into the water. His first training was incredibly
difficult, as he struggled to overcome his fear of the ocean and the memory of the shark attack. But gradually, he
began to regain his confidence and his love for surfing. As his strength and skills returned, Tom set his sights on
competing once again. He trained tirelessly, working with a coach to perfect his technique and improve his
performance. And finally, the day of the competition arrived.

One morning, John Evans entered my life. He was a newcomer, whose parents had recently arrived in our town
for seasonal apple picking. In worn-out clothes, he stood in front of our class, shifting from foot to foot. As our
teacher, Mrs. Parmele, penned his name in the roll book, whispers of disapproval began floating from row to row.
Mrs. Parmele looked up at us and the whispering stopped. “Class, this is John Evans,” Mrs. Parmele announced,
trying to sound friendly. John looked around and smiled, expecting somebody would smile back. Nobody did. I held
my breath, hoping Mrs. Parmele wouldn’t notice the empty desk next to mine. She did and pointed him in that
direction. He smiled at me as he slid into the seat, but I turned my eyes away.
A week passing by, John still had no friend. “It’s his fault,” I told my mother one night. “He barely even knows
how to count.” My mother had grown to know John through my nightly comments. She always listened patiently and
sometimes nodded thoughtfully.
Another day at lunchtime, “Can I sit by you?” John stood by me, plate in hand and smile on face. I looked
around and agreed a bit unwillingly. As I watched him eat and listened to him chat, it dawned on me that he was
actually pleasant to be around. And I was determined John would remain friendless no longer.
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司One evening, when Mother kissed me good night, I uttered, “Mom, tomorrow is John’s birthday. He’s not
going to get anything. No cake. No presents. Nobody even cares.” Mother and I both knew whenever a kid had a
birthday, his mother would bring cupcakes for the class. But John’s mother worked all day. His special day would go
unnoticed! “Don’t worry,” Mom said, “I’m sure everything will turn out fine.”
The next day, I wished John a happy birthday first thing in the morning, and his embarrassed smile showed me
he was glad I had remembered. Till the last class, nothing special happened.

一篇完整的短文。
When Sam and I were first married, we lived in a quiet neighborhood. Across the street, there was a big house
with a six-foot high hedge (树篱) that blocked all but a small path to its yard. It was clear that our neighbors wanted
privacy and weren’t interested in any “neighborly” behavior. Sam had discovered that a brother and sister lived in the
house. The house belonged to the sister, and the brother helped around the house with things like getting the mail and
setting the rubbish cans out on the day when the rubbish-collecting truck would come. The sister and brother were

his band in our yard one afternoon.
Not realizing it was we who were in the wrong, we thought our neighbors caused trouble to our already difficult
life. At the time, Sam and I were quite short of money. We felt sad when Christmas was around the corner. It was our
first Christmas as a married couple, and we didn’t have much money to celebrate it. There were no gifts or parties.
We didn’t even have any special holiday treats to share at home.
“I wish we could have enough good stuff on Christmas Day. When I was a kid, my family would always have
cheese, meat, cookies, candies, etc. It always felt like a feast (盛宴) to me as a kid,” I told Sam. I understood that
Christmas wasn’t all about nice things, but it just didn’t feel like Christmas with only a few foods. Sam seemed to
feel the same way. “Things will get a lot better next year,” he said, trying to be cheerful.
Three weeks before Christmas, we got to know our “unfriendly” neighbor, the brother, had a bad disease and
passed away. One morning after that, we noticed our neighbor—the tiny sister Mary—trying with all her strength to
pull her rubbish cans to the roadside alone. She looked so weak and lonely.
