I am afraid of heights but two summers ago I climbed to a high place. Most of our high school students had
come along on a day trip to a beautiful beach village in Peru. After eating our lunches, many of us wanted to make
the climb to an area around the village.
Do I turn back? “Yes!” Will I regret it later? I really want to get to the top, but… At last, I decided at least to
have a try.
My friend Tom was in front of me. Then, suddenly, he slipped(滑倒)and was about 10 feet back! My heart was
beating faster until he stopped himself. Knowing that my friend Seth would be right behind me, I began the climb. I
was soon past the first challenge safely, but not feeling much better about the rest of the climb. My heart seemed to
leap from my body. My friends kept climbing. But they did not forget me. Someone was always behind me to help
hold my feet when necessary, and someone else was always in front to offer a hand up.
Then we came to the worst part. The climb looked very close to vertical(垂直的). To me, the wise choice was
to go back down. Melody encouraged me to go on and she made it safely first.

A few years ago when I was looking for a small dog to add to our family, I contacted the local SPCA(Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and got the name of a woman who was fostering(领养,代养) some rescued
Maltese dogs for them. I called the woman, and my husband and I drove to her home. As I looked around, I noticed
a cute Maltese named Casper. My husband and I decided we would like to adopt him.
The foster mom asked us if there were any way we would open our hearts to Casper’s friend, Kato, as well.
She told us that the two boys, who had only each other for comfort, had recently been rescued from a puppy farm,
where they had spent the first seven years of their lives. When the local SPCA shut down the puppy farm and seized all
the dogs, Kato and Casper had been put in her foster home.
She told us that when she first picked them up, their fur was in such terrible shape that they hardly looked like
Maltese dogs. They were brown, whose fur was wet and dirty, and their paws were swollen. For seven years, they
were locked in a dark doghouse and the only human contact these boys had was when they were thrown their food.
Hearing all this, I turned and looked down at the little Maltese named Kato. But he’s so ugly, I thought. And
he isn’t even friendly. He barked angrily when we looked at him. When I reached for him, he pushed himself against
the back wall of his doghouse, whispering. Still, I felt a tig at my heart and agreed to take Kato also. As we drove
home, my husband and I worried that maybe we’d taken on too much. We’d never had dogs that had been so
abused(虐待) for such a longtime.

A week before New Year's Day, the phone rang. "Maggie ran off, and I can't find her, "my husband, Jerry, said
in an anxious voice. He'd driven to the town park with our dog, Maggie. “Why'd she run away?” I asked. “A smaller
dog scared her, and she took off over the footbridge. ” Maggie was eleven years old, overweight, and afraid of her
own shadow. I asked Jerry to find her before she ran too far away. Our daughter overheard my end of the conversation.
Jennifer often played upon the couch with Maggie. "Maggie's lost? Tell Dad I'll help him look for her. "She flew out
of the door.
At first, Maggie's tracks were easy to follow because a couple of inches of snow covered the ground. But her
prints stopped at the parking lot where the snow had melted. My husband and Jennifer searched for hours into the
night. Before leaving the park, Jerry hung his jacket on the branch of a tree and placed Maggie's bed below it. He
hoped the wind would carry his scent and Maggie would find her way back. But there was no sign of her the next
day. Jennifer made dyers and handed them out to houses around the park. We posted Maggie's photo on all the "Lost
Dog" sites and social media. Friends and family promised to keep an eye out for her.
The third day, I waited at home for calls and contacted M&M Pet Rescue. They offered to help. But there
was no sign, and we were all worried. Jerry and Jennifer went door-to-door with Moggie’s picture, asking if anyone
had seen her. Soon Maggie's story spread through the whole community.

In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch (胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the
price — five dollars — was far beyond Reuben Earle’s means. Five dollars could buy almost a week’s food for his
family. Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything Mark Earle made through fishing went to his mother,
Dora, who struggled to feed and clothe their five children.
However, he opened the shop’s weathered door and went inside. Standing proud and straight in his old but clean
shirt and trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you
please hold it for me for some time?”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled.
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the five dollars and not tell anybody.
On hearing the sound of hammering (敲打) from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea. People built their own
homes in Bay Roberts, using nails (钉子) bought in large bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were
thrown away at the construction, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he found two bags, which he sold to the man in charge of packing nails.
The boy’s hand tightly held the five-cent pieces as he ran the two kilometers home. Near his house stood the
ancient barn (谷仓). Reuben found an old soda tin and dropped his coins inside. Then he climbed into the barn and
hid the tin in it.
It was dinner time when Reuben got home. His father was ready to serve dinner as Reuben took his place at the
table. He looked at his mother and smiled. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it
together. Her chores were never-ending. But she was happy. Her family and their well-being were her most important
things.

On the first day of Grade 6, I sat in my quiet classroom and observed all the people I would eventually be
friend. I looked around and noticed that most kids were dressed in their nicest clothes. My eyes stopped on a shy-
looking girl in the back of the room. She wore an old yellow shirt with a pair of worn jeans. Her hair was unusually
short and unwashed. I caught myself thinking, “That’s disgusting (令人反感的). Doesn’t she know what a bath is?”
As I looked around, I found others were probably thinking the same.
The teacher began checking the attendance. “Terri Jackson?” the teacher asked. Silence. “Um, Terri Jackson?”
Finally we heard a trembling answer from the back of the room. We all turned back to see what had happened.
“Frightened Terri’s shirt has a crack!” one boy joked. “Eww, I bet it’s a hundred years old!” another girl said. One
comment after another brought a roar of laughter. I was probably laughing the loudest. Certainly, it made her feel
awkward. Terri was the joke of the whole sixth grade that year.
With my birthday coming closer, I began to invite my classmates. It struck me that I should also invite Terri to
make us happier. So I came to Terri’s seat. “Hey Scary—I mean Terri—you want to come to my birthday party on
Friday? “A lot of girls were laughing beside us. I noticed Terri’s face buried in her hands. She was crying.
“What’s got you all upset? All I did was invite you over, ”I whispered. She looked up and watched my eyes.
“Really?” That was all she could say. Her seldom-heard voice amazed me. “I guess so. ”My voice sounded surprisingly

It was the beginning of spring and Lucy was in the backyard with her grandchild, Jack. Jack was playing soccer
when Lucy asked, “I'm going to start planting my garden. Do you want to help me?”
“What are you going to plant, Granny?” asked Jack. “I like big, yellow sunflowers.”
“I'm going to plant vegetables. That way we can have them to eat when they are ready,” Lucy replied.
“How long does that take?” asked Jack. He sometimes liked vegetables, especially carrots.
“It will take a few months before anything is ready to eat, ”Lucy answered. Jack was surprised.
“Months? Why would you do all that work and then have to wait so long?” Jack said. “You should just go to the
store and buy them.”
“Be patient, my dear! Don't you know food always tastes best when you grow it yourself?” Lucy said. “And if

I was in my room, feeling unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He had recently
been adopted (收养) by my parents and I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.
“Kirstie, come here,” my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet
book. She gave the book a shake. “Henry’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She looked at me angrily,
something she had never done before Henry came to our home. I hadn’t wet his book on purpose. Raindrops fell from

mother’s love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Henry was nearby, concentrating on working on a complicated rope knot (绳结),something he liked
to do. Why did a boy like him like doing girl y work? It seemed far from manly (男子汉气概).
Soon, it was time to set off to the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me
aside and said in a low voice, “It will be Henry’s first time onstage. Be kind to him, honey.” I nodded but sighed (叹气).
I hadn’t always found it so difficult to be kind. But since Henry had moved in, everything felt different. The theatre
used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry along, it didn’t seem so special any more.
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids
lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely (松散地) I had tied the drawstring (拉绳) on my skirt.
Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. I could hear the audience laughing. Even though I was wearing shorts under
my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out.

I am Denise Clarice, the only one in my class who does not have a pet. No dog waits for me at the bus stop.
No cat sits beside me while I read. I don’t even have a tiny, furry hamster (仓鼠) to hold in my hand. But I don’t feel
sorry. Why?
The rule about no pets at our house is not because I am too young to have pets, because I am 1l years old.
Besides, I am very responsible. I always return library books on time and I do my homework every day, even when
I would rather play in the grass. The rule about no pets is because of Kevin. He is my little brother and he is sensitive to
pets, which make him sneeze (打喷嚏).
One day, when I was walking home from school, I heard a soft little sound from behind a garbage. I stopped
and listened. There it was. I heard the sound again. I walked quietly up the driveway and looked behind the garbage. A
tiny ball of gray fur looked up at me and said, “Meow.” Before I knew it, I was holding the cat. Before I knew it, I
was walking toward home, holding the cat in my arms. She must be lost. “Finders keepers,” I thought.
I took the cat upstairs to my room. We played with a ball, and she jumped high to catch the ball. I was excited
that I made a comfortable little bed for her in a box with a small blanket and gave her milk to drink. Soon, my mother

Summer was coming to an end and there was a bit of Autumn in the air. The temperatures were getting cooler
and cooler, the air was turning drier, and I could already see the first yellow and red leaves on the trees. It’s my
favorite season. The weather was neither too hot nor too cold, which made people feel very comfortable. You could
see fruit everywhere. Therefore, I spent as much time as possible in the wild enjoying the beauty of nature.
One day’, I had just finished taking my dogs for their morning walk when I noticed something. There was a
young maple tree growing in my hallway. It was growing out of a tiny pile of earth on the porch (门廊) . Its bottom
hadn’t even turned to wood yet, but it had three lovely red leaves growing out of it.
I smiled at this strong little tree getting so much growth and life out of so little soil. I knew, however, that it
couldn’t grow much larger where it was. I bent (弯腰) down and gently took it out of the earth. I took it inside to
show my daughter and have her take a picture of it. Then I walked with it out to the edge of the woods around the
grass land behind my house.
Walking into the forest, I had a wonderful feeling. Nature can teach us so much about life. There are so many
wonders, growth, and beauty in it. You can’t be out in it for long without being filled with wonder and respect.
I also took a moment to look at all the life around me. There were trees, bushes, weeds, flowers, butterflies,
bees, spiders, and birds all’ so full of life. And I felt so happy that my behavior, however small, was helping do good to

It was one hot afternoon. As a cultural festival would be held in school, all the students were making preparations
for it. Holden and his classmate Andrew were going to paint some flowers on a wall. They had to carry the necessary
tools to the wall first. However, when they were walking across the basketball court, Holden dropped two paint cans
by accident. The paint in them flew onto the floor and made it very dirty. He was shocked to see the mess he had
made on the floor.
“Come on, Holden! Let’s go! Let’s go!” Andrew said anxiously. They picked up the cans and ran away. Holden
thought it was lucky that no one discovered what he had done. An hour later, he passed by the basketball court alone
and saw the school’s old cleaner Flex was cleaning the paint up. And he heard the principal (校长) talking with the
cleaner.
“We have a meeting here tomorrow. This needs to be cleaned up immediately!” the principal told the poor old
man, who was hanging his head and trying hard to clean up the mess. However, the paint was oil-based, and a large
area of the floor was covered with paint; cleaning it was clearly a very difficult task.
But Flex replied he’d make sure it was ready for the next day and kept cleaning, with sweat (汗) flowing down
his face. Before he left, the principal reminded Flex, “By the way, please don’t forget to cut the grass around the
basketball court today.”
Holden felt terrible while watching the old man trying to make up for his mistake. But he decided to turn a blind
eye to it. However, on his way home, the picture of the old man struggling to deal with his mess kept coming to his
mind. It made Holden so regretful.
When he returned home, Holden decided that he needed to be responsible for his own mistake. He quickly put

For most people, adopting (收养) a pet is one of the best decisions that they can ever make in their lives. In
addition to giving an animal a home and a loving family, the owner will find the company of a pet brings more
happiness than expected.
For someone like Maria, having a pet was very suitable. She was all alone after moving to a new apartment in
Brazil, which made her feel lonely.
So when she found a cute black puppy named Chips, she knew she had to take him home. Maria thought that
Chips would be able to fill the emptiness that she had been experiencing from living all alone.
Maria was right. Once she took the puppy home, they immediately bonded. However, as Maria had to work
during the day, she was worried about leaving Chips home alone in her apartment. She was also worried that his
crying would upset her neighbors.
One night, when she returned home, outside her door was a package with a folded note attached to it. Maria
knew that she was in trouble. She hoped that she would not be evicted (驱逐) from her new apartment because of
Chips. She loved Chips so much, and she was afraid that she might have to get rid of him because he made too much
noise whenever she was away. Maria was frightened and wondered who could have left it at the door because she
had little contact with the people in the building except her neighbor, Angelia. In fact, they only said hello few
times.
However, when she noticed the names on the folded note, she found that it wasn’t addressed to her but to her
dog, Chips, and that it was “written” by another dog named Corote. Maria opened the package first and found a few

In a misty morning, Robert was hiking high in the mountains with Lucky, his tiny but energetic dog. Every
weekend, the two would go together on a hiking to climb nearby mountains. As they got near to the top, the path was
rocky and less-traveled. After an hour, they reached the top, touched by the beautiful view there. Lost in the
breathtaking scenery, Robert felt refreshed. When he looked at the loyal friend beside him, the memory of meeting
Lucky for the first time flooded into his mind.
It had been about two years since Robert got Lucky. She was small and a ball of energy. “The day when my
mother let me choose a dog from the doghouse, she was playfully jumping around and licking (舔) me, barking (犬

moment I threw my eyes on her, I knew she was the perfect dog for me. And, for some reasons, that active energy
was something that I needed in my life,” Robert kept thinking.
Time flew, dark night drawing near. Having got enough rest, Robert decided it was time to go home. Suddenly,
Robert lost his balance, rolled down a rocky hill, hit his head really hard, and finally stopped upside down.
One of his leg was in between two rocks, so he couldn’t move. But that was the least of his worries. What
Robert was really scared of was that he was going to sleep with a serious head injury. He tried to cry for help, but he
was so weak that he was going to become unconscious (昏迷的). “If only there had been someone else,” Robert
thought, sad and hopeless. As darkness fell further, the weather turned cold and windy and he was about to lose
consciousness. What’s worse, Robert noticed something like a snake approaching him before he finally fell

In a high school, there was a student named Alex, known for his skills on the basketball court (球场). As the
学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司point guard (控球后卫) of the school team, he carried the hopes of his teammates and classmates. One key game
could lead them to the regional finals, a stage they hadn’t reached in years. Alex felt the pressure but was determined to
lead his team to victory.
On the day of the game, the gym was filled with cheering students and teachers. Alex felt a rush of excitement
when he carried the ball across the court. The game was intense (激烈的), with both teams neck and neck. In the final
seconds, with the score tied, Alex had the chance to make the winning shot. He took a jump and released the ball, but
it missed the goal. The whistle (口哨) blew, and the opposing team caught the chance, scoring a last-second basket.
Alex’s team lost.
“How could I have missed scoring that goal? I had let the whole team down,” Alex thought to himself. His
stupid mistake made him angry. Sad and depressed, Alex walked back home, replaying the missed shot in his mind.
His parents immediately noticed his sadness. “What happened, Alex?” his mother asked. “I messed up the final shot.
We lost because of me,” he replied, heading straight to his room, feeling like he had let everyone down.
Later, his father came to his room. “Alex, I watched the game. You played well. It’s not just about one shot.
Basketball is a team sport. You win together, and you lose together. Learn from this and grow. Your team needs you.”
Alex didn’t say anything, but his father’s words made him think carefully.

篇完整的短文。
One day, Anna was walking home from school when she suddenly came across a homeless cat. Looking at Anna
from the bushes, the cat caught Anna’s eyes at once.
“Hey, kitty... Are you hungry?” Anna asked softly and reached into her schoolbag for her lunchbox. She took
some pieces of beef and held them out to the cat. The cat stepped forward and ate the beef next to Anna. A short while
later, Anna started to touch the cat as it at e the beef. The cat began to lick (舔) Anna’s hand when all pieces were
finished. “That was the only food left with me.” Anna said in a soft voice. As she got up, the cat began walking around
Anna, hoping to play with her. “Sorry, kitty. I have to go home.” Anna said.
Later that evening, Anna saw the cat sitting outside her yard through the window. She immediately ran out to it.
“Kitty, what are you doing here?” Anna asked as she playfully touched it. The cat meowed (猫叫) in delight.“Let me
see if my mom minds taking you in.” Anna said.
Anna ran back and told her mom about the cat. “Are you crazy, Anna? We don’t have enough money to support
ourselves. I’m sorry, but it's a NO!” Mom turned her down. Anna understood what mom meant and went to say
goodbye.
But when she got outside, she noticed a heavy storm was coming. She hoped the cat would look for shelter
somewhere, but it just sat there. She realized it was still waiting for her, so she went out into the rain, trying to lead
her friend to shelter. “Come on, kitty!” Anna said, but it wouldn’t move. It stayed right by her side. The rain began
to pour down harder.
