An anxious call came into Jimmy Gilleece’s bar. A newly married woman, who had spent the
afternoon at the bar, couldn’t find her wallet. She didn’t care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in
cash—but her wedding ring was inside.
Gilleece didn’t like the idea that a theft could have occurred at his place. So he set out to find
the wallet. He spent hours looking through security-camera videos, watching the woman’s every
step in the bar until she went to sit on a chair outside and left when her ride arrived. Within
minutes, a young man approached the bench, slipped something into his pocket, and walked off.
Gilleece posted a clip (剪辑) on the bar’s Facebook page. “I didn’t want to punish him,” he said.
“I just asked if anybody knew who the guy was.”
Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Prather, who admitted having taken the
wallet and told Gilleece he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring
but thought it was fake(假的), so he took the money and threw the wallet off the dock (码头) into
the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich.
Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the dock, where
they got talking and Prather revealed that he wasn’t getting along with his family and had been
living in the woods for a week. Judging from Prather’s small body and red cheeks, Gilleece saw
him for what he was: more of a kid than a criminal.
But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could be
facing charges. “He would be going to big boy prison. I have to help him somehow,” Gilleece
thought.

【答案】Gilleece paid two divers to search the waters where Prather had thrown the wallet. A
crowd gathered, excitedly watching the two divers searching in the strong current. Nearby, two
policemen were also waiting. More than an hour passed but there was no sign of the ring. The
crowd gradually got impatient, starting to talk noisily. Gilleece grew increasingly worried,
especially when the policemen began questioning Prather, attempting to get him to admit keeping
the ring. Each passing minute increased the chance that they would arrest the young man.
Then suddenly a diver came up to the surface of the water. In his hand was the wallet and
inside was the ring. Loud cheers erupted from the crowd. Gilleece quickly called the wallet’s
owner, who was wild with joy and immediately dropped the charges against Prather. With tears of
gratitude rolling down his cheeks, Prather hugged Gilleece tightly, saying “You’ve saved me
today. I couldn’t thank you enough!” Prather promised to go back home to join his family.
Gilleece’s act of kindness changed a teen’s life.

Be a Star of Your Own Movie
I always loved the movies. It didn’t even matter if I went to see them alone. In the movies,
nothing seemed impossible: I became the star of the cheerleading team who leads her team to
victory, or the teenager who bridges the gap between the races at her high school, or even the
young woman who falls in love with a handsome nobleman from the nineteenth century. And I
would always live happily ever after.
In fact, I liked to pretend what was happening on-screen was happening in my own life as
well. I liked the happy endings, the perfect happy endings. I wanted my life to be like that, happy
and wonderful. I wanted to escape the stress of family and friends and school. My only escape
from the reality that trapped me was heading for a movie theatre.
I hadn’t always been this way. As a young girl I was outgoing and friendly, and even involved
in after-school activities. High school was different, though. I became quiet and withdrawn.
My parents were worried about me. They urged me to call old friends or get more involved
with school. After promising my parents a thousand times that I would call one of my old friends,
I finally agreed. The only number I knew by heart was Sarah’s, so I called her. Sarah herself was
pretty close to perfect: straight-A student, class president, off to Yale in the fall, beautiful, sweet,
brilliant. We decided to meet fora pizza lunch.
We ate and talked and caught up on old times. I told her how difficult it had been for me in
the past few years and how unbearable the pressure had been. “I wish my life was the way it is in
the movies,” I sighed, “I would be so much easier.” I looked down through my fingers, face in my
hands. “I understand,” she said. I looked up at her, questioning her with my eyes.

【答案】
She explained she used to escape her realities by doing the same thing. “Then one day,”
Sarah explained, “I started to think about why I wanted to be like the people in the movies.” And
then it occurred to me that they had their scripts already written out for them. However, I had the
ability to write my own script. “If I had the power to determine the plot of my life movie, then
why wouldn’t I make it an inspiring one, a movie with a happy ending?” she said. “You are the
star of your own movie. Now all you need is your story.” she added.
Inspired by her words, I decided that I would produce my own life story. No other actress
could fill my role. It was up to me to produce, direct and edit my life. I would set my own goals I
was capable of achieving from now on. There can be no success without the possibility of failure.
The only sure way of failing is by refusing to try. I looked over at Sarah, and said “Thank you”,
squeezing her hand. The curtain rose, and my film began.

Mike licked the last of the mint chocolate chip ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He
jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim
meet.
When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out the
pool, smiling. He had just won first place, making him the fastest boy in his age group.
“Congratulations, son,” his father said. His mom gave him a hug, even though he was
soaking wet.
A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his
favorite ice cream flavor. Mike remembered that the last time he had won a race, he also ate mint
chocolate chip ice cream first. Maybe he’d win again.
He’s taken first place again in his race. Mike was feeling pretty good. As it turned out, Mike
decided to have some mint chocolate chip ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets.
He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of placing in the top positions of
every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn’t admit it, but all that ice cream
was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer’s build.
It didn’t take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place – and then third – and
then last place in his races. The lucky mint chocolate chip ice cream had lost its magic.
On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. “Mike, we all
love ice cream, but it’s not healthy for your body to eat so much of it. Maybe it’s time to quit the
sweet treats for a while, especially before you go swimming.””
Mike unwillingly agreed. He went to the swim meet, and didn’t perform well. His father
offered to go running with him a few days a week to help him feel better and strengthen his
muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim
practices.

【答案】 As he dove into the water, he kicked his legs and stretched his arms as far as he could.
It struck endless energy and motivation into his body. His teeth clenched and his eyes fixed on the
finish line forward. Suddenly, two figures whizzed past, which startled him. Fearing to fall behind,
he felt his heart pounded frantically and his mind went blank. Just then, he thought of his sweat
and his father’s encouraging smile.Gradually, his worry gave way to his confidence and the last 5
minutes saw him dash to the finish line, followed by the end of the race.
His jaw dropped as he realized he had beaten his own best time, and everyone else too.The
flowers in his heart were already in bloom. His parents came up and gave him a high five,
grinning from ear to ear. “Hey, why not try your favorite ice cream and celebrate!” said his father,
patting him on the shoulder. “Thanks, Dad, but I have given up the ice cream. It’s not such a lucky
charm at all.” His eyes shone with wisdom. It was that day that Mike realized that one’s lucky
charm was nothing but his diligence.

When I started karate (空手道) class a few years ago, I didn’t know a single person. I felt
ashamed of having no idea how to do any of the moves. Even though I liked the learning part, I
did not like the feeling-worse-than-everyone part!
But one day after class while I was putting my shoes on, a girl named Abigail said, “That last
kick we practiced is so hard for me, and you’re so good at it.”
“You must have confused me with someone else,” I replied. “I’m not good at any of it.”
“In that case, I’m in trouble,” she joked, “because you’re the one I stand behind and copy in
class.”
I laughed, “Seriously?”
“Seriously!” she laughed, too. After that, we became great friends. However, a few months
later when Abigail’s mom got a job in a different state and she had to move away, I was rather sad.
I had a tough time dragging myself to karate for a while after that I missed Abigail so much.
Then, a girl named Ava joined my class. She was always quiet. Until one day we finally had a
conversation.
“It must be weird (怪异的) being the new one in class.” I said.
“So weird!” said Ava. “You do things really differently than we did at my old dojo (柔道馆).”
I suddenly realized she’d been silent only because she was new. We started talking more, and
we got along so well that we started hanging out after class. Then, almost a year later, guess who
showed up at karate.
“This is so cool.” I said, giving Abigail a huge hug. “What are you doing here?”
“My mom’s job in New York didn’t work out,” she explained. “So we got to move back.”
“That’s the best news ever!” I said. “You have to meet my dear friend Ava. And Ava, meet my
dear friend Abigail.”
I put my arms around their shoulders. Feeling very excited, I told them I hoped we could get
along well and be close friends, while Abigail and Ava stared at each other with some hesitation
and an uncertain smile.

Things seemed all right at first. However, with time going by, conflicts emerged. Abigail
always complained that every time I hung out with Ava, she was left alone, while Ava said that I
paid more attention to Abigail, which drove her crazy, believing that our friendship was not what it
used to be. Trapped in the dilemma, I, enveloped by the sense of sadness, still felt confused why
things turned out to be that complicated, not knowing how to tackle the problem. Worse still,
karate even became the most frightening thing to me.
One day, I simply could not take it anymore. With tears streaming down my cheeks, I stopped
them from arguing and said with a deep sigh, “Why can’t you get along with each other well?
Both of you are my best friends.” Hearing my words, they didn’t utter a single word, sinking into
a deep silence. After what seemed like a century, Ava finally placed her arm with apparently
unaccustomed affection around Abigail’s shoulders. Seeing this scene, I gasped with relief and
burst into laughter.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The
crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth.
If we didn’t see some rain soon, we would lose everything.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for the family when I saw my six-year-old son Billy,
walking toward the woods. I could only see his back. He wasn’t walking in his usual way. He was
obviously walking with a great effort, trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared
into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house.
Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow and purposeful step toward
the woods. This activity went on for over an hour walking cautiously to the woods, then running
back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed
him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very careful not to spill the
water he carried. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He
had a much greater purpose. As I leaned against a tree to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.
Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them. I
almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously
suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lap up the
water in my boy’s hand.

【答案】After delivering the water to the dehydrated (脱水的) animals, Billy carefully jumped
up to run back. He knew that the water was precious and he wanted to make sure that the animals
had enough to drink. His little legs carried him as fast as he could go. His heart filled with joy as
being able to help these poor creatures. His small steps were determined and quick. I stood there,
watching him, with a mixture of pride and worry.
Later that day, I learned what had been happening. Seeing the deer suffering, Billy decided to
help them, even at the risk of his own safety. He had been secretly taking water from our small
well to the woods, where a group of deer had been struggling in the heat and drought. To bring
them water and save as many as he could, he repeated trips back and forth. Billy was only six, but
he had already shown more strength and resilience. I felt a sense of pride and admiration for my
little hero.
【2-2024 一中高三上月考2】
It was the 2019 National Senior Games in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I was there for the
1,500-meter race. Yes, you heard it right — four times around the track, 1,500 meters, at the age of
93.
In advance of the tough race, we’d stood baking in the sun for at least an hour while the
committee got the race walk organized. We’d walked almost the full distance of the race getting
registered and into position. We’d stood in the sun listening to the directions: heel first, then shift
weight to the ball of the foot.
There were forty-four other contestants but only two in my age group, ninety- to ninety-four-
year-old women, so I was counting on the bronze. I decided to keep my mind on “weight-on-the-
heel, weight-on-the-ball-of-the-foot, go Jean go”.
As I passed the finish line for the first time, my son cheered and yelled, “Go, Jean, go!” By
the time I finished another lap and passed the finish line a second time, other people sitting in the
stands joined in. I yelled back, “Thanks!”
I was soon being passed by walkers from other age groups. As they went by, they said, “You
can do it. Keep going.”
I started getting the little red dots at the back of my eyes that signal lack of oxygen. I kept
blinking my eyes, trying to see. I passed the finish line a third time. I was on the last lap.
I tried to change my posture (姿势) to put the stress in a different place. My cane (拐棍) was
having trouble finding the ground. I was gasping (喘气) for breath.
Two judges came running toward me. “Don’t give up,” one of them said. “You’re going to
make it.” The other told me to move over a lane, which would be slightly shorter. My cane was
having trouble again. “The finish line isn’t far now,” the judge said.
“How far?” I asked.
“Up there, that line of trees.”

The last 100 meters felt like a marathon, but I was determined to finish the race. Before my
“sprint” (冲刺), I slowed down a bit, steadied my cane and took a deep breath. Then I staggered to
the finish line, using every last bit of my strength. After what seemed like a century, I heard
everyone shouting, “Good job, Jean!” At that time, I could just make out a man running towards
me, whose hands caught me as I collapsed into a yellow chair under the tree. From the man came
a familiar voice: “I’m proud of you, Mom.” That was the last thing I could remember.
An hour later, I came to, surrounded by my son and a doctor. My son told me what happened after
I crossed the finish line: I fainted from the blazing heat and lack of oxygen. So he took me to the
chair and helped me cool down while the doctor hooked up my oxygen. But that was not the thing
I really cared about at that point. “What about the result? I hope I have won a bronze.” I said in a
weak voice. “You didn’t win the bronze,” he replied with a mysterious smile, “but you did win a
silver!”

Mike, aged 14, was a music fan, especially a fan of violin. He expected to be a music star
one day. Unfortunately, born into a poor family depending on delivering newspapers and milk, he
couldn’t afford a violin. He had thought of asking his parents to pay for one but finally he
abandoned possessing the impossible musical instrument.
Mike’s neighbor, Joseph, happened to be a violinist. The greatest pleasure Mike found after
school every day was enjoying the beautiful melodies floating out of Joseph’s window. Not until
dark did Mike sneak into his own room. And every time Mike’s mother asked him why he came
home late, Mike would say he was lost in music.
“Why not spend more time in your lessons instead, sweetheart? After all, music can’t make
money if you’re not so famous.” In order to prove he could realise his dream, he knew he must
have his own violin and practise more.
Mike found a job at a nearby church, running errands for the servicemen. One day, another
music player happened to learn about Mike’s situation and offered him an old violin as a gift. He
even promised to teach him how to play after church services at the weekends. Months later, Mike
learned violin very well.
The first performance he made was on the roadside of a lonely street. From time to time
passersby stopped to watch him play. And a few even left some coins in his hat lying on the
ground. When it was time for Mike to go back, he heard a woman’s cry. Following the sound,
Mike spotted her and discovered the truth that she was called Connie, a trainee in a cafeteria, and
that she had just had an awful day at work and was yelled by the boss.

【答案】Hesitatingly, Mike tried to lend her a hand though he was yet uncertain how to comfort
someone. Suddenly, an idea struck him when his eyes fell on the hat. “Those coins should be
enough for a bouquet of flowers,” Mike murmured. The next minutes found him running towards
a flower shop nearby and coming back with a bouquet of red roses. “Hi, Connie! I know you are
moody today, but I guess the roses might cheer you up,” Mike said. Roses in hands, Connie smiled
sweetly, “Thank you, Mike!” Connie later learned about Mike’s story and was impressed by his
dream.
Connie told Mike a violinist happened to be wanted in the cafeteria where she worked. “Really?!
I appreciate the chance!” Mike exclaimed excitedly. The next day, Mike passed the job interview
successfully. In the later months, Mike continued to learn and performed better and better. He was
able to earn tips in the cafe as much as 50 dollars a night. Not only did Mike help support his
family but he was better received in the musical world. Though he lacked skills and practice, Mike
felt he was moving closer to his dream day by day.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their
new business — a small grocery store downstairs of my house. As a girl of shy and reserved
nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food
bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city
hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the
big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt
held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting
feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was
helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She
grinned (笑), “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you
here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged
my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up.
“A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now
upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking
alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing ( 排练) almost every single day after school. We
brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty
good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute
stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
I was completely knocked out by the news. Gloomy and desperate, I sat silently in the room for
what seemed like ages, unsure of what to do next. Then I started to pace up and down like a caged
animal, debating with myself whether or not to go on stage alone. “How can this be possible?” I
thought to myself. Fear and anxiety coursed through my veins, and it seemed that all our hard
work was in vain. But then the thought of the support and encouragement from Emma and my
mom came flooding back to me. It was at the moment that I realized that I couldn’t let self-doubt
hold me back. Filled with determination, I resolved to proceed with the performance by myself.
Paragraph 2:
Finally came the big moment. As I stepped onto the stage, I could feel my heart thumping wildly
in my chest. Glancing around the hall, I took a deep breath and began to sing. Surprisingly, all my
worries suddenly disappeared and a wave of confidence washed over me. I was completely
immersed in the joy of performing and the audience was spellbound by the passion in my voice.
When I finished my song, the whole hall burst into applause. Tears of joy welled up in my eyes as
Emma presented a big bunch of flowers to me, and my mum stood near, winking at us. From that
day forward, I learned that by overcoming fears and self-doubts, we can make a difference.

It was the first day of our new grade. Everyone in the classroom was chatting happily, excited
to see each other again after the long holidays. When the door slid open, all of us stopped talking
and turned to look. In came our teacher Ms. Sullivan, followed by an ordinary-looking boy,
“This boy’s name is Rafael.” Ms. Sullivan announced. “He’s a transfer student (转校生), and
he’s going to be in our class starting from today. Make sure all of you welcome him warmly.”
The class clapped. But I didn't want to have a second look at the newcomer, for he had no
outstanding qualities considering his small figure and casual T-shirt.
“Oh, I forgot to mention one thing.” Ms. Sullivan spoke up. “Rafael actually has hearing
problems. Normally he would have hearing aids on, but his old ones have just been broken.
His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However, Rafael insisted
on attending his first day of school. So if you want to communicate with him, you have to write it
on a piece of paper.”
This single speech sent the whole class up into an uproar (嘈杂). Some students looked at
each other with expressions of surprise. Others voiced cries of concern out of pity.
Ms. Sullivan calmed everyone down. “I’d like someone to personally help him out

“How can a disabled person be intelligent?” I thought to myself. I refused to raise my hand
expecting someone else would. But nobody did or said anything. Dead silence spread across the
classroom.
It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms. Sullivan's.
“How about you, James?” She asked me. “Is it okay for you to take care of Rafael just for
today?”
It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher. I sighed
and nodded slightly. Ms. Sullivan gestured for Rafael to sit beside me and then asked us to share
our holiday stories with the class.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Immediately, the class became excited. Some could hardly wait to tell their seatmates about
their holiday trips, eyes shining and faces glowing with joy. Those who hadn’t been anywhere
bombarded them with inquiring questions. Enormous joy welled up in every corner of the
classroom. Obviously confused at the sudden noisy situation, Rafael turned to me for reasons in
written words. Surprisingly, my explanation put a smile on his face. “Any volunteer to share your
story?” asked Ms. Sullivan, whose words I set down on paper for Rafael.
Paragraph 2:
Then Rafael rose and walked onto the platform. Greeting us with a confident smile, Rafael
shared his story in a magnetic voice, which left me stunned. I felt more ashamed to learn that he
ran a website to help children with hearing problems than guilty about stupidly thinking disabled
people couldn’t be intelligent. Then his voice was lost in a thunderous outburst of applause.
Feeling a lump in the throat, I clapped my hands even more loudly, determined never to judge a
book by its cover.

Green Thumb
All I did was show my little sister how to grow plants. Dig a hole. Put in a seed. Cover it with
dirt. Water it. Wait. See, Laynie, "I explained, "a whole plant will grow from this tiny seed. All we
have to do is water it. "
Laynie had her own watering can so she could "help" me in the garden. One day, after
everything was, watered, she ran to the fence and started sprinkling water on another spot. I
walked over and saw a fresh patch of dirt near the fence.
"Did you plant something there?" I asked.
“Yes, " she said. “I'm growing a pencil. My purple pencil got too small, so I planted it. "
"What? But, Laynie-"
I should have explained things right then, but I just muttered, "Uh. . . I never grew one
before. "
Later I got what seemed like a great idea. I dug up Laynie's pencil and "planted" a brand-
new purple pencil. Laynie was really excited when she saw it. "My pencil grew!" she shouted.
A few days later, Laynie was watering on the same spot. Two days later, new crayons sticking
their pointy little heads out, thanks to me. Laynie jumped up and down and yelled, "They look like
flowers!" She "picked" them and ran into the house.
Next, Laynie grew an adult bear doll from a tiny one, a soup spoon from a teaspoon, and a
hand mirror from a piece of glass. When she claimed that she had grown these things, I just kept
my mouth shut! Actually, it was fun trying to think of what should grow from Laynie's seeds. And
it was cool to see her get excited.
One day I saw her patting down some dirt near the fence again, so I knew she'd just planted
something. My heart dropped to my feet when she asked, "How long does it take to grow a
goldfish, Brad?" I couldn't speak.
Not long, I bet!" said Laynie. She knelt down to whisper "Grow, Molly. Grow!" before she
skipped back to the house.

I sat down with my back to the fence and thought for a long time. Sighing, I decided then

When I displayed the short pencil, the crayons, the teaspoon . . on the table, Laynie was
dumbfounded. Then I explained how I'd dug up and replaced all of her things. "No!" she
screamed, red-faced. With a big shove, she knocked everything off the table. "Laynie, "I
swallowed hard and added, "Molly isn't going to grow either. "At this, she burst into tears and ran
off. Pierced to the heart with guilt, I felt like a worm.
Later I found Laynie sitting by the spot where Molly was buried. I sat down beside her,
gently held her in my embrace and apologized. Laynie turned her face away. I went on, "See, you

My heart tightened. "I'm growing some forget-me-nots, so Molly won't forget me, "she said. This

We moved to a small seaside community in New Zealand 10 years ago, because my husband
Phil worked as a biologist and he had to do research near the sea. I had seen seals (海豚) around
Pilot Bay, which is near here. Sometimes you see them out on the rocks, sunning themselves or
playing-but usually in their own territory. They never thought about disturbing their neighbors.
It was a dark winter morning in August this year when a seal came. At 5:50 a.m., I left the
house to go fitness training. I went down to the car parked in the driveway and heard a growl (咆
哮). I thought our cat, Coco, must have chased a dog under the car. I jumped into the car to avoid
getting my ankles bitten, and moved slowly, but then I felt the car hit something. When I got out to
have a look, I couldn’t see anything and thought it must have moved on. Then when I got back
into my seat, I saw a baby seal in the headlights.
I thought, Oh, my God, “but didn’t panic—the ocean is just down the driveway and I thought
it would find its way back. Off I went to the training center and gave everyone there a laugh when
I said, “Sorry I’m late; there was a seal under the car.” I didn’t think about it again until I got
home. As I walked through the garage (车库), I noticed our baskets had been moved. I wondered
if it was the seal, but then I guessed it could not be the seal because I didn’t think it could fit
through the cat door, which was the only way into the garage. But I was wrong. As I opened the
door to the house, I brushed something and heard this flip-flip-flip-flip sound, and thought, “My
God, that is the seal.”

【答案】范文
It was so cute like a lovely soft toy. It had watery eyes and looked at me like a chi id, which
made me desperately want to keep it secretly. But I knew it was a wild animal and it should be
back to its home, because wild animals belong to the wild. With a deep sigh, I phoned Phil, who
was on his way home from a work trip. He told me that wild animals smelled bad and I probably
never knew how sharp their teeth were. On Phil’s arriving home, we immediately looked for the
contact information.
We called Animal Protection Station, and a worker came over. It was sad to see the little
lovely wild creature wrapped up in a net to be taken away, but a great relief lifted from my inner
heart when the worker said it would be released into the sea after being checked. Experiencing this
fortuitous encounter with the seal reminded me that we should help raise awareness of protecting
seals. So, I together with Phil, posted the photos on the social media and it snowballed. For us, it
was pretty good to see so many people care for our lovely wild neighbors: seals.

Philip found himself at a crossroads. Although Mrs. Ford, his head teacher, appreciated his
stories, the label of “nerd” (呆子) from his classmates cast a shadow over his passion for writing.
Discouraged and feeling that his writing served no purpose in the eyes of others, he thought about
giving it up.
One day, during recess ( 课间), as Philip was absentmindedly taking down some random
events of the day, he heard an anxious voice calling out for help. He put down his pen, glanced out
the window, and saw a gathering of people near the playground fence. With concern, he walked
over and joined the crowd.
In the centre of the crowd was Robin, a sporty boy in the class, who was injured on the knee
and bleeding heavily. Robin was playing kickball when the ball unexpectedly shot over the
playground fence, landing in the old park next to the school. As he ran to get the ball, he tripped
over the overgrown weeds, his left knee crashing into a broken bench. Robin’s face paled, perhaps
from both pain of the bleeding knee and his panic. Concerned classmates surrounded him, and
Mrs. Ford hurried to the scene, providing some initial care before sending him to see the doctor.
Amidst the lively discussion of the crowd, Philip absorbed the information that the park had
been abandoned for ages. Turning his attention to the park, he was astonished at its awful state.
Overrun with weeds, broken benches, rusty sports facilities, and scattered rubbish, the park was
practically a dangerous place for students.
Philip was probably a nerd when involved in reading or writing, but he was never ignorant of
the world around him. He felt a strong desire to do something, and the only way he could think of
was to pick up his pen.

【答案】The next day witnessed Philip getting down to work. With a heavy heart, he wrote an
article about the terrible condition of the park and the unfortunate incident involving Robin.
Pouring his heart into the words, he appealed to the community to help restore the old park. Never
before had he felt that words could be so powerful. Later that day, Philip handed the article to Mrs.
Ford, who appreciated his deep concern for the park and managed to put the article on local news.
As the article spread, offers of help poured in. People went out of their way to donate materials
and help fix the broken facilities. Philip’s classmates were impressed by the changes taking place
in the park, astonished that his effort could make such a significant difference. Once labeled a
"nerd", Philip was now admired as a source of inspiration. Seeing the old park transformed into an
inviting place, Philip was glad he hadn’t quit writing. It turned out that writing could be put to
practical use.

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim
at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in
the waters. More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse still, as
they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs
when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming
consumed by waste. One weekend,Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined
to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the
plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags
lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and
Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently. Noticing their low spirits,
Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened?”Exchanging glances with Peter,
Maria replied in a low voice,“It’s those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just
impossible.”Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and
comforted,”Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.”“Just two of
us.”complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other.Suddenly, an idea lashed through their
minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes,that’s the point! We should make more people
aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.

Peter decided to take advantage of the Internet. “Maybe we can write an article to arouse people's
awareness.” Maria proposed. “Good idea! We can also make a video!" Peter added. The next few
hours witnessed their heated discussion and growing confidence in a clean and beautiful coast.
The next day, they went to the beach and filmed a short video showing plastic bags lying on the
beach and floating in the sea. Peter, who was good at writing, wrote an article talking about the
present situation of the beach and asking people to take part in the clean-up.
Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on WeChat. To their amazement, their post
went viral online immediately. Countless comments flooded in saying how heartbroken they were
when looking at the polluted beach and ocean. What amazed Maria and Peter more was that
numerous people in their community, encouraged by their efforts, offered to join in their clean-up.
More and more people came to the beach to collect plastic bags and they also appealed to others to
avoid throwing or using plastic bags. A year later, with their joint and continuous effort, the coast
regained its beauty and Maria and Peter regained their long-awaited pleasure.

As I was leaving my fitness class one evening, my instructor called across the parking lot to
me. “Hey! Jane! It looks like your muffler (消音器) under your truck is hanging kind of low!”
Honestly speaking, I didn’t like my instructor. The black birthmark on his face made him a
little ugly. I just nodded, waved and climbed into my truck. Yeah, whatever, I figured. You’re the
instructor. Worry about keeping my weight low, not about my muffler being low.
Then I was driving home, singing along with the radio when suddenly I heard: CLUNK!
THUD! SCRAPE-RATTLE-RATTLE! At first, I thought it was part of the song, but then I
realized it was a sound I had never heard in this song.
I looked in my door mirror and saw sparks (火花) dancing along the road behind my truck. I
pulled off to the side of the road to have a look.
The muffler was fine as far as I could tell. However, the metal bracket (托架) that apparently
held the muffler up under the truck had broken loose, and the muffler was resting on the
pavement. I wasn’t sure what had caused this to happen.
I decided the best idea was to pick up the muffler and hoped that, somehow, it would stick
back on the underside of my truck. Let me tell you, it’s surprising how hot a muffler can get in just
a short drive.
Still blowing on my painful fingertips, I called my father and told him what was happening to
his truck. “Whatever you do, don’t touch the muffler,” he told me. “It will be very hot.”
“If you can wait, I will call the garage to repair but you have to wait for half an hour. But you
can also manage it by yourself,” he said.
“I can have a try. I don’t want to wait,” I said.
“Then you can find some ropes, and then climb under the truck to temporarily reattach the
muffler.”
I searched the truck but the only thing I found was a spare tire and a pair of shoes.

Paragraph 1: “You can take down the loose bracket and place it under the muffler,” said my father.

Paragraph 2: The sudden voice frightened me and the bracket fell into two parts.
_______________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “You can take down the loose bracket and place it under the muffler,” said my
father. That was a good idea. In that way, the bracket can protect the muffler from being damaged
by the road. Then I could drive to the garage or go home. So I took off my coat and hat excitedly.
A few minutes later, I was lying on my back in the damp driveway looking up at the underside of
my car. Slowly and carefully, I reached out to get the broken bracket. “Is that you? Jane?”
The sudden voice frightened me and the bracket fell into two parts. I got annoyed but realized
the voice was familiar. It was my instructor. I climbed out. Sure enough, the instructor was
standing by my car. “What’s wrong?” he asked. I told him what had happened and showed him the
broken bracket. He smiled and apologized to me. Then he took over the shoelace from my hand
and climbed underneath my car to tie the muffler. Since then, I have changed my attitude towards
others and never judged a person by their appearances.

In the heart of the forest, there was an annual event that all animals looked forward to—the
Great Forest Race. The big animals, like the majestic deer, the powerful bears, and the swift foxes,
always dominated the race. They believed that their size and strength were the keys to victory.
Among the small animals, there was a brave rabbit named Hopper who had always dreamt of
winning the Great Forest Race. Hopper was small, but he had quick feet and a determined spirit.
The day of the race arrived, and the forest was filled with excitement. The big animals took
off, their powerful legs carrying them swiftly through the forest. The small animals, led by
Hopper, followed closely behind.
As the race progressed, the big animals began to slow down. Their size and strength, which
they had thought were advantages, became obstacles as they struggled to navigate the twisty paths
and steep hills of the forest.
Hopper, on the other hand, bounded gracefully over the obstacles. His small size allowed him
to weave through the trees with ease, and his determination kept him going strong.
One by one, the big animals began to fall behind. They watched in amazement as Hopper and
the other small animals passed them by.
Finally, the small animals, led by Hopper, had not only participated but had also triumphed in
face of adversity. The big animals realized that they had been wrong to underestimate the small
animals. They had judged them based on their size, without considering their skills or
determination.

The Great Forest Race became a symbol of unity and cooperation.
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Para. 1:
From that day forward, the big animals treated the small animals with respect. They
recognized that strength and size were not the only factors that determined success. Hopper, the
brave rabbit, became a hero to all the animals in the forest. His determination and perseverance
inspired them to never give up on their dreams. The big animals learned a valuable lesson from
Hopper and the other small animals: never to judge someone based solely on their appearance or
perceived limitations.
Para. 2:
The Great Forest Race became a symbol of unity and cooperation. Every year, animals from
all over the forest came together to participate in the race, regardless of their size or strength. They
worked together to overcome obstacles and celebrated each other’s successes. The race became a
time for animals to come together, appreciate their differences, and recognize that every animal,
big or small, had a role to play in the harmony of the forest. Hopper’s victory not only changed the
way the animals saw each other, but it also changed the fabric of their community, making it
stronger and more inclusive than ever before.

【1-2024 一中高三下适应演练2】
Sally’s birthday was approaching, and the excitement that usually filled her heart was now
replaced with disappointment and stress. Turning eleven was a big deal, and she had always
celebrated it with a grand party surrounded by her friends. However, this year was different. The
burden of excessive homework and her parents’ struggling business weighed heavily on her,
forcing Sally to make the difficult decision of not having a birthday party, even though it was an
event she enjoyed dearly every year.
One day, during break, her best friend, Jane, with a curious look in her eyes, approached.
“Are you going to have a birthday party this year?” Jane asked, sensing Sally’s sadness.
“No,” Sally sighed and replied sadly, “There’s just too much going on and my parents are
going through financial difficulties.”
She smiled weakly, trying to conceal her immense disappointment and stress, but Jane saw
through her pretence (假装) easily. Jane nodded thoughtfully and did not say anything. After the
break, Sally saw her talking to one of their classmates, Sarah, secretively. Curious, Sally went over
to them, but as soon as Jane saw her, she quickly walked away. Sally was startled by Jane’s
strange actions and turned towards Sarah.
“What did she say?” Sally asked.
However, Sarah simply shrugged and walked away with Jane, leaving Sally standing there,
feeling left out and anxious.
What is happening? Sally wondered anxiously. Are they keeping something from me?
As Sally’s birthday drew nearer, Jane was often found chatting softly with her other
classmates. Whenever Sally went over to them, they would just walk away or tell her that they
were talking about a secret which Sally was not allowed to know. Jane has never kept secrets from
me before, Sally thought. Her heart fell. Even her friends were distancing themselves from her!
She swung between confusion and sadness with each passing moment, desperately trying to figure
out what was happening. Why were her friends distancing themselves from her? And what were
they hiding?

【答案】On the day of Sally’s birthday, she went to school and found her classroom in total
darkness. A wave of confusion washed over her as she stepped hesitantly into the room, her heart
pounding. She reached for the light switch, but before her hand could find it, a chorus of voices
broke the silence. “Surprise!”, her classmates, led by Jane, jumped out from all sorts of hiding
places. As the room flooded with light, Sally’s eyes widened in surprise and disbelief. The
classroom was decorated with balloons and streamers, a beautiful cake sat on the teacher’s desk,
and in the corner, a pile of presents waited to be unwrapped.
Tears sprang from Sally’s eyes and her face broke into a radiant smile. She turned towards
Jane, who was grinning from ear to ear. “We knew you couldn’t have a party this year, so we
decided to bring the party to you,” Jane said, her eyes twinkling with mischief. The cloud of
confusion lifted from Sally’s mind as she realized that her friends hadn’t been distancing
themselves from her, they were planning this surprise all along. The sadness that had been
looming over her birthday disappeared, replaced with joy and gratitude. As she cut the cake and
opened her presents, Sally realized that this was indeed a grand birthday party, just like the ones
she used to have.

What should have been a regular Sunday at the YMCA turned into a day one teenage
lifeguard will never forget!
Eighteen-year-old Natalie Lucas has been working as a lifeguard at the YMCA in Longmont,
Colorado, for the past three years. Recently, a couple entered the pool area while she was on duty.
The woman was very pregnant, so Natalie kept a close eye on her as she eased herself into the
shallow end of the pool.
Tessa Rider was nine months pregnant that day. She and her husband, Matthew Jones, came
to the pool a few times that week to ease the discomfort of a nerve pain.
As Tessa was resting in the pool, she suddenly realized something was happening. Natalie
noticed Tessa climbed out of the pool, so she went over to check on the couple. “I walk over and
Matthew, the husband, says to me, ‘We’re having the baby right now.’ I’m like, ‘OK!’” Natalie
recalled.
Matthew called 911, but as he spoke to the operator he knew it was too late. Tessa was
already pulling her bathing suit off. Natalie helped Tessa and Matthew by bringing over the
center’s medical supplies and towels, and calling for more assistance from the front desk.
Throughout it all, she told herself to remain calm and focus on caring for Tessa.
“I knew I needed to stay calm,” Natalie said. “So I made sure to keep my head on and stay
with them, keep asking them questions, and keep them focused on the baby and made sure that
they were the most comfortable.”
Less than five minutes later, Matthew caught his newborn son as he was born on the pool
edge.
After helping clear the baby’s airway and ensuring he was breathing, Natalie used her back to
support the new mom until paramedic (护理员) arrived. Once there, baby Tobin Thomas Rider
received a clean bill of health!

Matthew and Tessa are both grateful that Natalie was there to help them.

Paragraph 2:
Natalie said Tobin’s unexpected birth was all just part of her job.

【答案】One possible version:
Matthew and Tessa are both grateful that Natalie was there to help them. They thought they
were in great need of an extra set of hands at that moment. Matthew said Natalie was super
focused on Tessa so that he did not have to worry about his wife. Without Natalie there, he
wouldn’t have been able to give his attention to Tobin. “She was there to do anything we asked,”
said Tessa. “And the first thing I thought of was that someone could hold my back up. And she
did. It was perfect.”
Natalie said Tobin’s unexpected birth was all just part of her job. The teen, who’s getting
ready to head off to college in the fall, says, “I just did what I was supposed to do in that situation.
I’m a lifeguard. It was the first time I’d had to help bring life into the world, rather than just
prevent death.” Undoubtedly, the whole experience made an impression on her and she planned on
sending birthday cards to Tobin. Both Natalie and the couple plan to stay in touch. They’re
definitely bonded for life after this unforgettable experience.

“Have you decided on your major?” my parents inquired.
“Bioengineering, of course.” I responded without the slightest hesitation.
I entered this world with Poland syndrome, a disease that prevented the formation of my right
arm and pectoral muscle(s 胸肌). My parents, believing that playing with Lego could enhance my
dexterity(灵巧), gifted me my first kit when I was five. Struggling to piece the components
together, I crafted my first Lego work – a car. As I got older, I grew obsessed with Lego Technic, a
more advanced range, and how to use it to build more delicate structures. By the age of nine, I had
fashioned my first prosthetic arm(义肢)using Lego Technic – a simple box that perfectly
accommodated my right arm.
This early creation sparked my drive for further exploration. Years later, I developed another
prosthetic arm that I called the MK-1, which had fingers, a motor, a pressure sensor, a movable
elbow joint, and a grabber capable of picking things up.
Before constructing it, I had already decided against traditional prosthetics. Not because they
were ineffective, but because playing with Lego did significantly improve my dexterity, helping
me adapt to my condition. However, a more frustrating reason was that prosthetics were too
expensive. My parents and I had looked into getting one a few years earlier, only to be
discouraged by the prohibitive price. So, I concluded that I might not need one because I was
managing well without. Nevertheless, the joy of creating prosthetics with Lego remained, and I
continued making them purely for the fun of it.
As the years passed, my creations evolved from MK-1 to the more advanced and comfortable
MK-V. It featured a control unit that could send and receive orders from sensors on the arm to the
motors, with cables that contract like muscles.
One day, a couple with their eight-year-old son, who lost both arms in an accident, reached
out to me after learning about my creations. Short of money, they couldn’t afford well-functioning
prosthetics. “Daniel,” the father earnestly asked, “we were wondering if you could possibly help
build a set of prosthetics for our son.”

I knew it would be a challenging and demanding task, but I responded with a “yes”. The boy
lifted his head with his once lifeless eyes now glittering with a spark of hope. I beamed at him
with a radiant smile and without any delay, embarked on the task. The subsequent days witnessed
how I carefully selected the Lego pieces that catered to the boy’s interests and intricately
integrated practical components to enhance its flexibility. Days turned into weeks, and the boy-
customized prosthetics finally took shape. It’s time for them to fulfill their intended purpose.
I rushed to the boy’s home and secured the prosthetics onto him. Holding breath, we
anxiously awaited the result — they worked! The room erupted with cheers! The boy expressed
his gratitude and sprinted to his parents to envelop them in the biggest hug he hadn’t been able to
give for years. The scene was truly inspiring. Never had I imagined that my creations, born out of
mere fun, would someday make such a profound difference. It is on that day that I made up my
mind to commit myself to making a lasting impact in the realm of prosthetic innovation.

Without warning, he let out a series of loud, urgent barks, as if trying to alert me to a potential

As I approached the window, I witnessed my elderly neighbor, Mr. Thompson, lying

behind. Quickly assessing the situation, I dialed emergency services and requested immediate

Mrs. Green in Room 301
The notice was posted next to the mailboxes in the apartment building I’d just moved into in
Brooklyn, New York. “A Mitzvah for Mrs. Green,” it read. “Sign up to drive Mrs. Green in Room
301 from her chemotherapy(化疗) treatments twice a month.”
Since I wasn’t a driver, I couldn’t add my name, but the word “mitzvah” lingered in my
thoughts. It means “to do a good deed”. According to my grandmother, it also had another
meaning. This was the one she was always pointing out to me because she noticed how shy I was
about letting people do things for me. “Linda, it’s a blessing to do a mitzvah for someone else, but
sometimes it’s a blessing to let another person do something for you.”
Three weeks later, on the night of taking my final exam, the snow was falling steadily for
hours. Pride would not let me knock on a door and say, “It’s a 10-minute ride by car but a long
wait for the bus, and it’s a 30-minute bus ride, so could you possibly give me a lift to school?” So
I trudged (艰难地走) to the bus stop. For an hour, I prayed desperately that a bus would come.
Then I gave up. The wind at my back pushed me toward home and I seemed to hear Grandma’s
whisper: Ask someone for a lift! It could be a mitzvah. That idea had never really made sense to
me. And even if I wanted to ask someone for a good deed, there wasn’t a soul on the street.
But as I pushed the door of my apartment building open, I found myself face to face with a
woman at the mailbox. In that split second, desperation overcame pride, “Could you possibly give
me a lift?” I hurriedly said, feeling quite awkward and uncomfortable, “I never ask anybody for a
lift, but...” An odd look crossed the woman’s face, and I added, “Oh! I live in Room 401. I moved
in recently!”

Back home, I happened to know Grandma Alice was Mrs. Green!

【答案】范文
Then, without hesitation, she said, “Of course.” We walked to her car, and she started
chatting with me, easing my awkwardness and discomfort. As we got in, she turned on the heat to
warm us up. I unwound the scarf and Grandma’s smile suddenly sprang into my mind as if she
were praising me for letting another person do something for me. I murmured, “you remind me of
my grandmother”, with tears blurring my eyes. With a slight smile touching the corners of her
mouth, she said, “Just call me Grandma Alice.” When she dropped me off, I stood there waving
her goodbye. My final exam was a breeze compared with the difficulties I’d gone through.
Back home, I happened to know Grandma Alice was Mrs. Green! I froze in surprise, realizing
what a big mistake I made. Grandma Alice was the very person who needed to get a ride but I
went so far as to ask her to give me a lift to school. At the thought of her kindness, I was weighed
down by guilt. I knocked on her door to express my heartfelt gratitude. As I entered her apartment,
Mrs. Green embraced me and thanked me for giving her the opportunity to fulfill a “mitzvah”. At
that moment, I began to understand that a mitzvah was not just about doing a good deed for
someone else, but also about allowing others to do something for you, in which way people can
experience the joy and fulfillment that come from both offering and receiving help.
