The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some
people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were
trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She
knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine
to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed,
his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy—his name was
Bernard—had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his
mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn
money.” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I
have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell
you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make
popcorn (爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John's idea, she thought it was a good one, too.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.
Mrs. Meredith, John, Harry 和Clara, Bernard, the sick man and his
人物
wife
①经济衰退期间人们互助共渡难关;②Mrs. Meredith乐于助人;
③Mrs.
一个主题 love, help and act of kindness
II.
III.
映原文与续写部分的同一个主题: love, help and act of kindness。
IV.
可利用 after that, later, on
先应认真阅读原文,带着when, where, who, what, why, how理清原文的 故事背景 (setting )、人物和原文故事
The economy
was in decline, people lost jobs, but they were trying to help each other.
5W(Who? What? When? Where? Why?)
Mrs.
Meredith曾去过Bernard家,续写部分可用paid another visit to the family呼应原文这个细节。
A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp.
Angered by the spray, the bear greeted us with a howl of rage.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived.
思考:that very moment是什么时刻?
Suddenly, the bear had torn a narrow opening in the
fence which would collapse soon and witness the bear tear us into pieces.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived.
Hearing the helicopter,
we ran back to the camp swiftly, and radioed our savior in a trembling voice.
Grabbing the camera, I dashed out and snapped
valuable pictures of the escaping bear, making the trip unforgettable for the whole life.
hug (胳膊), lift (手臂), stand up (腿), bend down (腿);五官的动作: smile (口), laugh (口)。
watch, look at, notice外,可用throw a hateful look at, keep one's eyes on, lift one's eyes, give sb. a wink等动词
He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions (情绪) get the better of him.
Her tail began wegging (摆动) ever_so_slowly,_then faster as she caught the smell.
词或介词短语(to one's surprise, in relief, in panic)等描述人物的情绪。
Della finished her crying and dried her face. She stood by the window and looked out unhappily at a gray cat
walking along a gray fence in a gray back yard.(小说《麦琪的礼物》中利用3个形容词gray,体现了Della
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she
turned around, hoping_to_see_the_lake.
Jane 的吃惊 ) she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snow capped mountain top .
She suddenly realized that she was lost.
①“Absolutely!” replied John, excitement shinning in his eyes.
②So angry was the bear that it roared and smacked the fence violently. (so ... that倒装句型)
③You can not imagine how frightened we were at the approach of the polar bear.
thought/she realized; there was a voice inside that, she heard a whispering voice from her heart; it hit/struck him
that ...
Della finished her crying and dried her face. She stood by the window and looked out unhappily at a gray cat
walking along a gray fence in a gray back yard. “Tomorrow would be Christmas Day, and I have only one dollar
and eighty seven cents to buy Jim a gift. I have been saving every penny I could for months, with this result. Jim
earned twenty dollars a week, which does not go far. Expenses had been greater than what I have expected.” she
whispered, “But I only have one dollar and eighty seven cents for Jim, my Jim.” She was lost in thought. “They
always are. Many a happy hour I have spent planning to buy something nice for him. Something fine and rare—
something close to being worthy of being owned by him. But now what should I do?”
①利用各种形容词,做到“有声,有色,有质感,有味道”,如: the songs of birds (鸟鸣), the
thundering clouds (电闪雷鸣), the blue sky (蓝天), the green grass (青草), the fragile flowers (娇嫩的花), the
fragrant roses (芳香的玫瑰), the setting/rising sun (落日/冉冉升起的太阳) ...
Imagine mountains wrapped in silver water, shining in the spring sun. Summer sees the mountains turn
bright green with growing rice. During autumn, these same mountains are gold, and in winter they are covered in
sheets of white frost.
2.主观环境描写:可利用①Sb. find sth.+adj./doing/done [某人发现某物(状态/动作/被) ...]; ②It is so+
adj.+that we find/feel
entirely in their power
The dark, rainy evening, the wind, the thundering clouds held me entirely in their power. We saw lots of great sights along the way. I closed my eyes in the speeding car. Winding rivers, lofty
mountains, deep valleys and sunny beaches kept me amazed.

One day Officer Jackson and Steve were discussing a serious case when they were informed of a disturbance
(骚乱) in the nearby subway. So, they walked out of the station and got into their car.
The two officers had expected they’d have to deal with an annoying beggar troubling the passers-by for
money. But when they arrived at the crime scene, they were shocked at the beggar’s appearance. The man had tears
in his eyes and was sitting on the subway stairs, looking untidy and tired.
“Excuse me, sir,” Officer Jackson said. “You can’t stay here, nor can you bother the people to give you money.
You have to leave this place.”
“Look, officers,” the man sighed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to cause any trouble, okay? I lost my cane (拐杖),
and I can’t walk without it. I wanted a few cents so I could get myself something to eat.”
The two officers exchanged looks, knowing the man wasn’t a disturbance but someone who really needed their
help. So they promised to get him food, buy him a cane, and drop him home.
After doing that, the officers drove to the beggar’s home, only to discover he had no home at all. He was just
wandering in the streets and living off the leftovers he managed to find.
The poor man said his name was Eugene. When he was working at a skyscraper construction site, he was
injured and became disabled, losing his ability to walk. Unfortunately, his disability forbade him from doing
physical labor, and he wasn’t well-educated to find a desk job, so he remained jobless. Because he couldn’t provide
for his family, his wife and children left him. “I don’t have any hopes of changing my destiny (命运), officers,” the
man said.
But Officer Jackson wanted Eugene to change his life. “You’re still young,” he said.
“You can’t lose hope so soon. He brought him something warm to eat, helped him take a shower, and gave him
his warm boots. After his work, Officer Jackson drove Eugene to a shelter for the homeless and left.

One morning, Ann’s neighbor Tracy found a lost dog wandering around the local elementary school. She asked
Ann if she could keep an eye on the dog and she planned to find its owner. Ann agreed, but she said that she could
watch it only for the day because she needed to take care of her son. At the time, her son Thomas was 10 years old,
who was recovering from a heart operation.
Later, Tracy took photos of the dog, printed off 400 FOUND fliers, put them in mailboxes and began to find
the dog’s owner. Meanwhile, Ann bought some pet supplies, warning her son not to fall in love with the dog.
However, her son was filled with excitement as he knew that his mother got a dog back home. He planned to
provide the dog with some food everyday.
Four days later, Ann and her son were still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. During
the four days, they took care of the dog carefully, provided some food, took a shower and played with it, and they
had already become the best friends.
The evening of the fifth day, when Ann arrived home from work, the dog threw itself against the door and
barked madly at her. As soon as she opened the door, Riley dashed into the boys’ room where Ann found Thomas
suffering from a heart attack. Riley ran over to Thomas, but as soon as Ann bent over to help him, the dog went
silent.
The doctor said if it hadn’t come to get his mother in time, Thomas would have died. Luckily, with thedoctor’s help, Thomas could go home tomorrow morning.
“Mum, can we keep it if we can’t find its owner? Even we can ask for permission if we find the owner,”
Thomas asked his mother when they came back home.
“Well, since no one has called to claim it, we decide to keep it,” his mother replied. Hearing that, Thomas was

My Dad and Little Joe
Dad and Mom immigrated to Canada from Iceland, their families settling in Lundar and Gimli. After they met
and married, they moved to Winnipeg where Dad started his boat-building business. Putting in nails was our job: As
kids we were small enough to get to the underside of the boat, and it saved Dad lots of time.
We had a dog, Little Joe, who was a brown, short-legged, sausage-shaped dog. Little Joe came to anyone who
paid attention to him. We all loved him, as did the rest of the neighbourhood kids. Little Joe ran around the streets
as though he were a noble, his little head held high, offering an innocent doggy smile to all he met—including
vehicles. We tried to teach him about the dangers of the road, and finally locked him in the yard. However, on one
unforgettable day, Little Joe dug a hole under the fence and squeezed out to visit his friends.Sometime later, a tearful group of neighbourhood children brought home the sad news that a truck had
seriously injured Little Joe. He now lay down the road awaiting death by a policeman’s bullet, the accepted method
in those days of dealing with injured animals.
We ran to the scene of the accident, where a crowd had gathered around him. Though his eyes were open, he
lay there, unable to move. Tears filled our eyes as Little Joe showed he recognized us with a feeble wag of his tail.
We stood around him, frustrated by our inability to respond to the appeal for help we read in his eyes. And we were
terrified by the pistol of the approaching policeman. He motioned us away from the dog and drew his gun.
Suddenly we became aware of noise. My father was elbowing his way through the circle of onlookers. He
spoke with authority to the young policeman. “Put that thing away! You don’t use a gun around children!”

One afternoon, Ava drove to her 4-year-old son’s kindergarten to pick him up. When she arrived, as usual, her
son Noah came running and said, “Hi, Mom!” It brought a big smile to Ava’s face. “Did you have a good day,
sweetie?” she asked. “Yes,” Noah replied.“Alright, let’s get your things and go home,” Ava said. Noah sat down on one car seat in the back, carrying his
school bag which contained books, candies, etc. Then, Ava started the car. “So tell me about the PE class today. Did
you have fun?” Ava asked. Noah said he did and explained happily. Ava watched traffic while listening to him.
The mother and son were quiet for a couple of minutes. And Ava started to think about what to make for
dinner. “How about having some pizza when we get home?” Ava asked Noah. When he didn’t answer, Ava
wondered what he was thinking. She knew her son liked pizza, but maybe he wanted something else this time.
“You like pizza, don’t you?” Ava asked. Still, Noah didn’t answer.
Ava looked over her shoulder, seeing Noah’s face turning red. He couldn’t speak at all. “Oh, my God! What
happened?” Ava asked. She had just passed a four-ways top, and there was a wide, grassy shoulder on the road
where she pulled off and jumped out of the car, She ran to the other side of the car and freed Noah from the car

短文。
If you had to choose one word to describe Kevin, it might have been “slow”. He didn’t learn his ABCs as fast
as other kids. He never came in first in the schoolyard races. However, his smile was brighter than the sun in June;
his heart was bigger than the mountain sky. Kevin’s enthusiasm for life was quite infectious.
When Kevin joined the boys’ school basketball team, basketball became the center of his life. At practice, he
worked so hard that you’d think he was preparing for the NBA.He liked to stand in a certain place near the free-
throw line and shoot at the basket. Patiently, he stood there throwing ball after ball after ball. “Look at me, Coach!”
he’d shout at Randy, jumping up and down with the excitement of shooting.
Kevin and his whole team truly loved basketball. But just loving the game didn’t help them win. More balls
fell out of the basket than into it, and the boys lost every game that season, except one—the night when it snowed
and the other team couldn’t make it to the game.
It was a cold snowing afternoon when their last game came. As the last-place team, they played against the
first-place team. The game went pretty much the same as expected, and near the middle of the fourth quarter
Kevin’s team stood nearly 30 points behind.
At that point, one of Kevin’s teammates called time-out. As he came to the side, Randy couldn’t imagine why
the time-out had been called. “Coach,” said the boy. “This is our last game and I know that Kevin has played in
every game, but he’s never made a basket. I think we should let Kevin make a basket.” With the game completely
out of reach, the idea seemed reasonable, so the plan was made. When they had the ball again, they passed it to
Kevin who was standing in his special place near the free-throw line.

Mark grabbed his keys. He needed to get out of the house quickly. He had been trying to save as much money
as possible from the government assistance he received due to his disability, but it was harder and harder with

Unfortunately, he lost half his right arm in a car accident several years ago, and it was hard to find a new job in

only had those government checks keeping him fed, but he was tapping into his savings for everything else, and
they were running out fast.
One of his friends had gotten him an interview and he was on his way. But after closing and locking his door,
Mark turned around and got the shock of his life. A pregnant (怀孕的) woman was lying on his lawn, and/he had no
idea how long she had been there.
He grabbed his phone and called 911 quickly, and suddenly, it started to rain. Finally, it came, and he
explained to the doctors that he had to move her because of the rain.
“Don’t worry, sir. She’s cold, so it was good that you moved her. Do you know this woman?” asked the doctor.
Mark shook his head.
“Can I give you my phone number? If you don’t find her family or anyone, can you call me? My name is
Mark Higgins.”
“I’ll see what I can do,” the doctor said, noting down his number and leaving with the woman.
Mark closed his door and sat down on his couch, hoping his heart would stop beating so fast. Suddenly, he

There is one incident in my life that makes me want to say thank you to the person involved.
My story happened in June, 1975. It began when my family was finally notified that we had successfully met
all the requirements to emigrate (移民) to Canada.
We immediately set about selling our household goods to have enough money to start our life in a new
country.
However, our government only allowed us to use a small portion of the money to pay for the flight tickets. The
rest was required to be sent directly to a bank account in Canada. The only cash we were allowed to take along with
us was $16.
For me and the children, this was our first time out of the country and the first time to be travelling by plane.
We were all very amazed by everything new we were experiencing. We did not yet have TVs in our home country.
So we were excited about watching the in-flight movies.
On the flight, the stewardess came around to distribute the headphones to passengers. But since we were flyingeconomy class, we were told that the headphones cost $1.
The kids looked at us longingly and asked if they could have a dollar for a set of headphones which they
would share. Knowing we had only $16 with us in cash until we reached Canada, I knew that we could not afford to
waste the money on headphones — not even one set.
When we explained our dilemma to the kids, they accepted it without complaint. But our disappointment must
have shown clearly. A gentleman nearby handed his headphones to us, smiling, without saying a word.

“You signed us up for what?” Lu’s eyes widened as Jamie grinned at her. “A charity bike ride. It’d be fun!”
She stared at him open-mouthed. “Fun? But I haven’t ridden a bike for years, Jamie. And I hate exercise! How long
is this ride?” Lu could feel her muscle shrinking at the mere thought of it.
“Only 20 kilometers.”
Lucinda swiped the brightly coloured leaflet advertising the bike ride from her husband’s hand. “Twentykilometres? That’s a half marathon, Jamie!”
She tossed the leaflet back at him. “Well you can count me out. I’m not fit enough to run five minutes round
the block, let alone hours on a bike.”
“But you will be in a couple of months. I thought we could train for it together.” Jamie patted his beer belly.
“I’m not exactly in great shape at the moment. And you’ re always saying we don’t get to spend enough time
together!” He gave her his best winning grin.
A smile fell across Lucinda’s lips. It was true, she was always saying that lately. Though spending her
weekends cycling was not exactly what she’d had in mind.
A wave of sadness spun through her heart. The past few months had been... difficult. She had lost her job and
was struggling to find a new one. Being at home, scrolling through job adverts and waiting for interview replies,
had left her feeling stuck. Jamie had been working extra hours to support financially, but that only added to her
guilt. Despite trying to stay positive, life had somehow skidded to a stop.
“I’m not sure,” Lu sighed.
“It’s not a race, but a joy ride, Lu.” Jamie reassured her, nudging her playfully. “Plus, I’ve already rented us a
tandem bike(双人自行车)!”
“A tandem?” Lu’s eyes flashed with horror. “Are you mad?” She stared at him. “You’re not even joking, are
you?” Doubts crept into her mind as she imagined the challenges of coordinating their movements on a shared bike.

Sometimes when you are a kid, it is easy to feel pretty helpless. Indeed, if you stop and think about it, there are
so many things that you can’t do. You can’t play sports as well as your football or basketball heroes. You can’t do
some of the stunts (特技动作) that other kids do at the skate park. Sometimes it is hard to see that you even have
the potential to develop any of these abilities. What you want to achieve may seem such a long way in the future
that it feels you will never reach it.
Well, I once beard an inspiring story—a true story, I believe—about a boy named Trevor. It shows there are
little things kids can do that make a big difference. One night Trevor was doing what a lot of other 13-year-old kids
would be doing: He was watching TV. On the news he saw a story about some homeless people sleeping out in the
cold on the streets, in a downtown area of Philadelphia where he lived. Trevor had never really stopped to think
how fortunate he was to live in a fairly well-to-do suburb(郊区) of the same city. The story of the homeless people
touched his heart and he began to wonder what he could do to help these people.
It might have been easy for Trevor to forget about it. There are so many sad stories that you see on TV at
times. This could have been just another that he ignored.
Trevor also might have thought, “Well, what can I do about it? I’m just a kid’‘, but he didn’t. Instead he began
to wonder how he might help and that led him to remember there were some spare, unused blankets in their garage.

Pat was the new kid in town. Her dad got a new job, so they had to move from their old home, school, friends
and everything in South America to this new city. Now they were total strangers here.
Summer vacation went by while they unpacked, arranged furniture and adjusted to the new city. School was
approaching. Pat dreaded it. She was not an outgoing person, so making friends was not easy for this shy and quiet
girl. She was filled with fears and worries. She thought, “Would I make friends? Would I fit in? Would I survive at
all in this strange new world?” But there she was, preparing for a new school full of strangers.
Here came her first day in the new school. She arrived at school on time, found her classroom and seated
herself. Everything was going well until the first class when Pat’s teacher asked her to introduce herself in front of
the whole class. She had prepared for it the day before, so she should have done it well. But when she uttered the
first sentence, the whole class burst out laughing and began to whisper. It was then that Pat realized she talked with
a very strange accent which was different from the locals. Blushing with embarrassment, she finished her
introduction quickly and sat there all day long without talking with others.
After school, Pat came home crying, “It’s an awful day. All of them are disagreeable. I hate them.” After
knowing what had happened in the school, Pat’s mother gently hugged her and comforted her, “Hatred is a double-
edged sword that can hurt both others and yourself. Honey, try to be happy.” In order to cheer her up, Pat’s mother
suggested, “How about having a party this Saturday? We haven’t had any party since we arrived here.” Party is
such an appealing event for kids like Pat. Right away, she stopped crying and looked at her mother excitedly, “Oh
yes! Ice cream! Cake! Red, red balloons!”

I’ve spent my adult life as a college professor teaching people how to think more creatively and use more of
their brainpower. Interestingly, this lifetime passion was awakened by a casual contest when I was a child.
At a family picnic for employees of the company where my father worked, they held contests for the children
— who could blow the biggest bubble-gum (泡泡糖) bubble, who could hop the longest on one leg. I was 13, full
of enthusiasm and the spirit of competition, so I threw myself into the contests. The grand finale, the handkerchief-
throwing contest, I realize now, was not meant to demonstrate any real skill, but simply for laughs. But it stirred my
love of thinking outside the box.
The judge gave each of the dozen children a cloth handkerchief and told us the winner would be the one who
threw it the farthest. The first throwers, the little ones, took mighty wind-ups (挥臂动作), but when the cloth left
their hands, it opened and fluttered (飘动) to the ground a few inches in front of them. The crowd roared with
laughter, and being 13, I didn’t like adults laughing at us.So it made me angry to see the kids throwing harder when the handkerchief always opened, caught the air and
died. The secret was not to throw harder but to keep the cloth from opening. Suppose I hid a rock in the cloth
without tying it. The rock would drive the cloth at least farther than the others, and when they separated, people
might not notice a small rock landing in the grass. I had a good chance of getting away with it, but I didn’t want to
win by cheating. What I really wanted to do was to show them that a kid could beat them at their own game. I had
to make the handkerchief fly like a rock. Like a rock! That was it! But the question was how.

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to
our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not
having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply
understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestionsseriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could
make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting
to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even
if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being
as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire,
so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—
only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still
dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.

My mother’s giftA dandelion (蒲公英) in my dictionary always reminds me of my lunchtimes with my mother.
When I was in the third grade, I was picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had
painstakingly (费力地) practised my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I
stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she
had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to switch roles.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease,
and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose leaves were turning green. We could see yellow dandelions popping
through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with a little bit of gold.
I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the dandelions. “I think I’m going to dig up all these
weeds,” she said, suddenly pulling a flower up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.” My mother looked at me
seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased
that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no
shame in that.”
Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened.
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, reminding me of how much I loved to read stories aloud to her.
“The narrator’s part is as important as the part of a princess.”
Over the next few weeks, with her constant encouragement, I learned to take pride in the role. Lunchtimes
were spent reading over my lines and talking about what I would wear.

I was driving home from school one hot summer day when I realized that my car was not working right. I kept
driving and prayed that it would hold out the 3 hours that I still had to go. Seconds later, everything in my car died
and I barely made it off to the shoulder.
Knowing absolutely nothing about cars, I pulled off to check the oil because that was the only thing I knew

the car and he would take a look to see what was wrong.
After some investigating, he informed me that it was my transmission(变速器) and he could jump my car
enough to make it to the service station which was just a mile up the road. After charging my car, he led me to the
station and went in to tell the mechanic what was wrong. He came back out seconds later to tell me the mechanic
was out on a break and probably wouldn’t be back. However, there was a shop with auto parts and he would see if
they had the right part. He went ahead and purchased the transmission for me and said he could again jump my car
enough to drive it up the road to his place where he had a shop where he worked on tractors.
I again followed him up the highway to his shop and he began working on my car while I sat in the driver’s
seat. After working for about an hour, trying to get the old transmission out and the new one in, he realized that he

It was the longest heat wave anyone could remember, and Sebastian couldn’t wait to cool off at the beach with
his dad. Before heading out of town, they stopped at the library and dropped off a few books.
Sebastian noticed a crew working on the library roof. He asked Dad what they were doing. Dad explained that
they were repairing the roof, a difficult job he had done himself for a few years.
It was then that an idea flashed into Sebastian’s head: I bet they could use some water. But the idea
disappeared just as quickly as the scenery passing by his window, and his thoughts turned to swimming.
The waves were perfect for bodyboarding, and a sea breeze cooled the air. But all too soon they were headed
home, back to the heat. Sebastian was half listening to the radio when the DJ gave the weather report, “The record-
breaking heat will continue throughout the afternoon,” she said. “If you have to be outside, remember to hydrate
(补水) and stay in the shade.”
When they drove by the library, the roofers were still working and the sun was beating down on them.
Sebastian wondered whether they have enough water. Sebastian had just finished two weeks of soccer camp, and
even with frequent water breaks, it had been miserably hot. It made him think again about taking some water to the
roofers. So he shared the idea with his brother, Marcos. Marcos shrugged. “You don’t even know those guys.
They’ve probably gone home already anyway.”
Maybe Marcos was right Sebastian walked to the end of his driveway, where he could get a view of the library.
But the roofers were still there, and the sun was still broiling (酷热的). Sebastian didn’t see any coolers or jugs
anywhere. Then he told Dad, “I really think they need some water.” A look of concern came over Dad’s face. He

1. Since that day, Eugene had never expected to meet the two officers again. But three months later, he saw a
cop’s car pull over outside the shelter, and Officer Jackson got off. Eugene was shocked. “I just have to give you
something, Eugene,” Officer Jackson said. He gave Eugene an envelope containing $12,000 inside. The two
officers had started a campaign for Eugene and managed to raise that amount in three months. “You can slowly start
a new life with this money, friend,” Officer Jackson said encouragingly. Eugene was deeply touched by their
kindness.
A few months later, Eugene was a changed man. He got a job at the shelter and rented an apartment nearby.
He was also continuing to seek help and meet a psychologist to heal the wounds his past had given him. Every day
before going to work, he would clean up his appearance and face his colleagues and work in the best state. People
at the shelter all loved the warm and positive man, all thanks to the two kind officers.

Then, bending on one knee on the road, he removed his worn work jacket and carefully wrapped it around
Little Joe. Many events in a child’s life aren’t worth remembering as time passes by, but I remember my father’s
rough, work-worn hands handling Little Joe’s broken body with gentleness. I cannot promise that the emotion I saw
in our dog’s eyes was gratitude, but I like to think that it was. I’ll never forget that homeward journey. With Little
Joe wrapped in his jacket, he led a procession of admiring children.
As soon as we arrived home, my father sent for a veterinarian (兽医). However, the veterinarian did not even
bother to come, as he was certain our dog wouldn’t survive. For many nights I thought Little Joe’s life was over.
But my father spoke with confidence as he knelt beside the wooden box that served as Little Joe’s hospital bed. “Hehas fight in him. Wait.” So we waited. Finally, Little Joe survived. He went on to live a long life. Little Joe owed
his life to my father, a giant in my heart.

Seeing his lost right arm, David came up with an idea to reward Mark. David is a biomedical engineer. He has

The kids’ faces lit up with joy. They put the headphones on and settled into their seats for the long flight. I was
touched by the kindness of the stranger who had given us his own headphones. It was a small gesture, but one that

This incident definitely had a powerful effect on me and our children. It taught us the value of kindness and

greeted with friendly greetings and cheers from Sunday morning walkers. And there was Jamie, always by her side,
softly encouraging and cheering her. As the hours passed, they were both sweating buckets. Gone with the sweat
were Lucinda’s groans and concerns. Weeks slipping by, Lucinda found herself actually looking forward to their
weekend rides. Her muscles grew stronger and their progress became evident, instilling a newfound sense of hope
and optimism.
It seemed cycling had truly got their lives moving forward again. Jamie was in quite good shape, his belly
tight now. Last week Lucinda received happy news out of the blue -a job offer from one of her many applications
and interviews! Finally, the big day came. Lucinda was surprised by the bustling scene: friends, families, spectatorsand a crazy collection of cyclists - some in fancy dress, others in serious cycle gear. As they waited, Jamie glanced
over his shoulder. “I’m really proud of you, you know.” Lucinda grinned. “For the job offer, or this?” Jamie smiled.
“Both. You never gave up, even when things seemed impossible.” “And you never gave up on me. Now look at

flew along amidst the thunderous cheers of the crowd. In that moment, Lucinda felt her heart spinning with
happiness.

10.“If so, let’s have an enemy party. I think it would be interesting,” Pat’s mom smiled. Pat looked at her mother
in confusion, wondering how an enemy party could possibly be fun. But her mother continued, “Invite your
classmates, including those who laughed at you today. Maybe they just need a chance to get to know you better and
realize that you can be friends. It’s an opportunity to break down the walls and build bridges.” Pat pondered over
her mother’s words, realizing that maybe there was a different way to approach her situation, one that involved
understanding and forgiveness.
On Saturday, it was sunny, and all of Pat’s classmates came to the party. The backyard was adorned with
colorful decorations, and the air was filled with laughter and excitement. As the day progressed, Pat observed her
classmates interacting with one another, slowly realizing that they were not as disagreeable as she had initially
thought. Conversations sparked, smiles were exchanged, and barriers began to crumble. Pat’s mom’s idea of an
“enemy party” turned out to be a turning point, where enemies became acquaintances, acquaintances turned into
friends, and the seeds of understanding were sown.

11. I was thinking really hard when suddenly a good idea struck me. I secretly tied knot after knot until it was
the size of a little rock. When it was my turn, there were a dozen cloth handkerchiefs littering the ground. I took a
long wind-up, and the balled handkerchief rocketed off into the trees approximately 60 feet away. The emcee stared
at me, with narrowed eyes, shocked, and then ran to locate the balled handkerchief. Before the emcee found my
handkerchief, a man said, “He must have cheated.”
“It’s just the handkerchief,” the judge declared, holding it up and untying the knots (结). “We didn’t say he
couldn’t tie it.” The adults burst into applause and I felt proud and thrilled. But it was more than that. What I
learned from this contest was the secret to creative thinking. If you want to maximize your brainpower, you can’t
accept rules at face value. You should think deeply about the rules, use your imagination as much as possible, and
be creative to do what the rules require, so that you can break the rules and be innovative.

However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. Ignoring my mother’s reminder, I slid into the forbidden
world. How fascinating! Among various colorful flowers danced butterflies. With excitement, I chased after the
graceful creatures, running deeper into the woods. Suddenly they flew over trees and disappeared. What’s worse, I
got lost! I rushed around, crying for help, frightened and helpless, but in vain. I repeated the useless efforts until
sunset. “If only I followed Mom’s reminder!” I curled up under a tree, in bitter regret and cried again.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. “Mom! I’m here!”
Wild with joy, I rushed towards where the voice came from. Behind a tree appeared my mother. She dashed up,
hugged me tight and checked whether I got hurt. “I’m so sorry! I should have appreciated your suggestion!” I burst
into tears. Wiping tears from my muddy face, she repeated the reminders, which weren’t boring any more, but wise
and affectionate, and were implanted in my life forever.

However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. I summoned up my courage and decided to take a
chance. Hardly had I entered the woods when I was totally attracted by the sight. The wandering clouds, the
blooming flowers and the vigorous trees all kept me spellbound. At the sight of a beautiful butterfly, I tiptoed along
the path, bent over, cupped my hands gently and danced with it down the track. Time flew and before I knew it, I
was deep in the woods, unable to find the way out. With a feeling of horror totally holding me in its power, I
squatted down under a tree, tears rolling down my cheeks.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. Hearing my mom’s
voice, I yelled in a quivering tone, rushed towards her direction and threw my arms around her. Noticing my misty
eyes, she patted me on the shoulders and checked whether I got hurt. Choked with emotion, I whispered, “I am OK,Mom. I will never go into the woods without your company and permission.” Shooting me an approving look, she
added, “Next time you want to come, keep me informed!” In the setting sun, we headed back and this time, I held
my mom’s hand tightly.

Backstage on the night of the performance, I felt nervous. At first I was at a loss what to do, but it was at that
very moment that I found a dandelion in my pocket. I knew my mom passed the flower to me, which meant to be in
company with me. I calmed down as soon as possible. I knew that the narrator part was of vital significance. I
performed so well that the audience stood up and burst into thunderous applause.
After the play, I took home the flower I had placed in the pocket. Mom carefully gazed at the dandelion, gently pressed it into the dictionary and grinned happily as she did. “We were perhaps the only people who would
press such a sorry-looking weed.” Though decades have passed, I constantly recall our precious lunchtimes being
together, grateful, because smiles on Mother’s face and her kind act foster a man like me now! And all those
inspiring words like “Cease to struggle and you cease to live.” have been echoing in my mind as fresh as a daisy.

She offered me something to eat and drink while I waited. She constantly talked with me and just kept me
calm. She told me that they also had a daughter of my age. Her words made me calm down and waited patiently. An
hour later, the man appeared again, saying that it was all finished and seemed to be running smoothly. I hopped in
my car and was sure enough everything was working perfectly again. I couldn’t thank him enough for theirkindness.
I wrote him a check for the transmission and tried to give him more. However, he didn’t accept it, just saying
that he would hope someone would do the same thing for his daughter. I was moved that the man would take
several hours out of his day to help a complete stranger. In addition, I held a firm belief that his daughter would get
generous help when she was in need because there would always be the same people as her father and the kindness
would surely make a huge difference.

15. Sebastian stuffed a bag with water bottles and got into the car with his dad. As they drove to the library,
Sebastian nervously approached the roofers and offered the water. A man got down the ladder and held the bag
open for the others to see, signaling them to come into the shade for a water break. The roofers looked surprised but
grateful. As they passed around the bottles and opened them, one crew member asked, “How do you guys know we
have run out of water?”
“It was all his idea,” dad smiled, nodding at Sebastian. Sebastian didn’t know how to respond. But the crew’s
smiles said it all. Having finished their water, the roofers put the empty bottles back into the bag. They thanked
Sebastian and his dad again and waved them goodbye as they drove away. Arriving home, Dad praised Sebastian
for his kindheartedness. A simple act made Sebastian feel good. He tossed the empties into the recycling bin. Then
he poured two big glasses of cold water, one for himself and one for his dad.
