Her Trees Save Lives
Adeline Tiffanie Suwana was 12 when her family’s home flooded. Indonesia, her island nation, is often hit hard by

Adeline learned that mangrove trees play a key role in flood protection and rallied classmates to plant 200 trees during
a school break. They started a group called Sahabat Alam or Friends of Nature, which works to conserve the region’s
biodiversity and combat climate change.

Teens’ Two-Fold Invention
EPS—expanded polystyrene foam—is the white, lightweight stuff used to make things like takeout food containers,
foam egg cartons, and packing “peanuts”. But it takes up a lot of space and is difficult to recycle. EPS breaks into small
pieces as it floats down waterways into oceans, harming wildlife along the way.
Eighth-graders Julia Bray, Luke Clay, and Ashton Cofer looked at EPS’s chemical makeup and saw that it was mostly
carbon. That sparked an idea. Could they turn it into activated carbon, a material that filters toxins from water?After 50 hours of experiments, including one that accidentally set the family grill fire, they succeeded!
Solar for Her School
When Claire Vlases of Montana was in seventh grade, she learned about plans to expand and modernize her middle
school. Claire asked the school board to add solar panels to the project. The board liked the idea but said it could contribute
just $25,000, one-fifth of the cost. So Claire organized a group of kids and adults who set to work raising the rest.
They asked for donations, even going door-to-door for them. And they appealed to charitable foundations too. One
even donated half the cost!
After two years of hard work, the group paid for the solar panels, which now supply one-fourth of the school’s
electricity needs.

In 1999, John Smyth, a high-school teacher decided it was time to retire. Together with his wife Helen, he set off on a
journey around Australia. But when they returned, John found he missed the classroom, so he spent another eight years
doing casual teaching.
Then he heard about a program known as Volunteers for Isolated Students’ Education (VISE), which pairs up energetic
people with educational experience, usually retired teachers, with children whose schooling is largely done remotely,
because they live too far away from towns and cities to attend regular schools. John grew up in the country and as a kid in
the bush, he always dreamed of running with circus, but he didn’t even have much chance to see the circus in person.
Therefore he was immediately interested in the program and got a travelling post as a teacher with Stardust Circus.
The lesson timetable was built around the kids performance schedules. “The eight-year-old I tutored was an awesome
gymnast who was part of the teeterboard (跷跷板) act,” he explains. “A big guy would jump on the other side, he would
swing up in the air, do a couple of twirls (旋转) and land on his uncle’s shoulders, and his uncle was standing on the boy’s
father’s shoulders!”The circus still includes some animal acts, including lions, monkeys, horses, goats and pigs. John and his wife Helen
found it extraordinary enough to sink into sleep to the sound of lions roaring, but one day the lion-trainer, Matt, gave him a
very special privilege, inviting him in to meet four 13-month-old lions in person. While it was understandably a little scary
at first, for John it was a never-to-be-forgotten experience, which helped him realize his boyhood dream in his 75th year.

Scientists find when tiny plastics end up in farm fields, the pollution can impair plant growth. But two young
researchers now report that combining fungi (真菌) with certain farm wastes can partially overcome that problem. May
Shin, 20, and Jiwon Choi, 18, presented their discovery at the 2023 Regeneron International Science and Engineering
Fair(ISEF).
The pair met in a research design class at the Fryeburg Academy, a high school in Maine. May had wanted to explore
how microplastics might affect the ecosystem. Jiwon was fascinated by plants and fungi. The young scientists shared their
interests, May says, to test how long-lived plastics might affect farm crops—and how to limit any harm.
May and Jiwon planted more than 2,000 scallion (韭葱) seeds in pots of soil. Half the seeds got soil polluted with
microplastics. The rest grew in plastic-free soil. The plants assigned to each soil were further divided into four groups. The
young scientists added certain microscopic fungi to the soil in one group. Another group had a top layer of farm wastes. A
third group got both treatments. The last group got none. For three weeks, the pair tracked how many scallions sprouted (萌
芽) in each group and measured the plants’ height once each week.About twice as many scallions sprouted in clean soil compared to that containing plastic bits. But among plants
surviving in the polluted soil, a combination of microscopic fungi and farm wastes helped them out. Those getting both
treatments grew 5.4 centimeters(about 2 inches)per week. That was faster than either of the treatments alone or those getting
none. It was slower, however, than scallions planted in clean soil. They grew 7.2 centimeters(2.8 inches)per week.
In the future, the two young scientists hope to continue testing microscopic fungi and farm wastes under other
conditions. Their goal is to see how other factors might change the plants’ response to the soil treatments.

“Few articles change owners more frequently than clothes. They travel downwards from grade to grade in the social
scale with remarkable regularity,” wrote the journalist Adolphe Smith in 1877 as he traced a coat’s journey in the last
century: cleaned, repaired and resold repeatedly; cut down into a smaller item; eventually recycled into new fabric. But with
the improvement in people’s living standards, that model is mind-boggling in the era of fast fashion. The average British
customer buys four items a month. And it is reported that 350,000 tonnes of used but still wearable clothes go to landfills in
the UK each year.Yet the gradual revival of the second-hand trade has gathered pace in the past few years. At fashion website Asos, sales
of vintage clothes (古董衫) have risen by 92%. Clothing was once worn out of necessity, and now it is simply a way of life.
Busy families sell used items on eBay, teenagers trade on Depop and some fashion people offer designer labels on Vestiaire
Collective. Strikingly, it has become big enough business that mainstream retailers (零售商) want a slice of the action.
For some buyers and sellers, the switch to the second-hand is born of financial difficulties. Only a few have become
worried about the impact of their shopping habit on the planet. But the shift is only a partial solution. Some people worry
that some mainstream brands may “greenwash” — using second-hand goods to improve their image, rather than engaging
more seriously with sustainability.
However, the biggest concern may be that people keep buying because they know they can resell goods, still chasing
the pleasure of the next purchase but with an eased conscience (愧疚). Boohoo, a powerful fast fashion company, has seen
sales and profits rise, despite concerns about environmental problems in its supply chain that led to an investigation last
year.
A new Netflix series, Worn Stories, documents the emotional meanings that clothes can have: Each old item is full of
memories. Actually, a handbag from a grandmother and a scarf passed on by a father are both valuable for us. A love of
style is not a bad or an unimportant thing. But a committed relationship is better than a quick flash. Can we learn to
appreciate our own old clothes as well as others’?

How to master tricky conversations at work
Many of us struggle to say what we need to at work. Whether it’s asking for a pay rise or facing a co-worker over their

Plan

rechecked under the house, then in the garage under and behind old books, every place I could think of, but still no Socky.
After lunch I took some food scraps(剩饭) with me in case I found her, then began searching the back shed, which was
huge and filled with cardboard boxes full of junk and empty tea-chests(茶叶箱). After about an hour of moving cardboard
boxes from one place to another and back again, I was tired out. I sat down on an upturned tea-chest to have a rest when I
heard faint mewing(喵). I put my head up against each of the tea-chests, pressing my ear against the plywood(夹板) so I
