A proton (质子) is an infinitesimal (无穷小的) part of an atom.
Now imagine if you can (and of course you can’t) make smaller one of those protons down to a billionth of its normal
size into a space so small that it would make a proton look huge. Now pack into that tiny, tiny space some matter. Excellent.
You are ready to start a standard Big Bang universe.
In fact, you will need to gather up everything there is, every last mote (尘埃) of matter, between here and the edge ofcreation and press it into a spot so infinitesimally compact (紧密的) that it has no dimensions at all. It is known as a
singularity.
It is natural but wrong to visualize the singularity as a kind of packed spot hanging in a dark, boundless void (虚空).
There is no space, no darkness. The singularity has no “around” around it. We can’t even ask how long it has been there-
whether it has just lately exploded into being, like a good idea, or whether it has been there forever, quietly awaiting the
right moment. Time doesn’t exist. There is no past for it to emerge from.
And so, from nothing, our universe begins with a big “bang”. In a single blinding pulse, a moment of glory “explosion”
much too rapid and expansive for any form of words, the singularity assumes( 显露出) heavenly dimensions, space beyond
conception. Within a second gravity is produced and then the other forces that govern physics. In less than a minute the
universe is a million billion miles across and growing fast. There is a lot of heat now, ten billion degrees of it, enough to
begin the nuclear reactions that create the lighter elements—principally hydrogen, helium and a little lithium (锂). In three
minutes, 98 percent of all the matter there is or will ever be has been produced. We have a universe. It is a place of the most
wondrous and gratifying possibility, and beautiful, too. And it was all done in about the time it takes to make a sandwich.
28.What is the characteristic of singularity?
A.Empty. B.Mysterious. C.Fixed. D.Predictable.
29.Which of the following happens or comes into existence first?
A.Gravity. B.Expansion. C.Nuclear reactions. D.Elements.
30.We can infer from the last paragraph that the author is amazed by _____.
A.the existence of the universe
B.the environment in which the universe is made
C.the speed at which the universe comes into existence
D.the beauty of the universe
31.What chapter of a science book is this text most probably taken from?
A.Protons in the Universe. B.Why Build a Universe.
C.The Size of the Universe. D.How to Build a Universe.

AI could make it less necessary to learn foreign languages. That is good news for travelers, bad news for soulful
connection.
Travel has long been a motivator for study — unless people start to feel AI tools offer a good-enough service. Some are
concerned that apps are turning language acquisition into a dwindling pursuit. Douglas Hofstadter, a writer, has argued that
something important will disappear when people talk through machines. He describes giving a hesitant, difficult speech in
Mandarin, which required a lot of work but offered a sense of achievement at the end. Who would show off taking a planeto the top of Mount Everest?
Others are less worried. Most people do not move abroad or have the kind of sustained contact with a foreign culture
that requires them to put in the work to become fluent. Nor do most people learn languages for the purpose of humanizing
themselves or training their brains. On their holiday, they just want a beer and pizza.
As AI translation becomes a more popular labour-saving tool, people will divide into two groups. There will be those
who want to challenge their minds, put themselves in other cultures or force their thinking into new pathways. This lot will
still take on language study, often aided by technology. Others will look at learning a new language with a mix of
admiration and confusion, as they might with extreme endurance (忍耐力) sports: “Good for you, if that’s your thing, but a
bit painful for my taste.”
But a focus on the learner alone misses the fundamentally social nature of language. It is a bit like analyzing the
benefits of close relationships to heart health but overlooking the inner value of those bonds themselves. When you try to
ask directions in broken Japanese or make a joke in hesitant German, you are making direct contact with someone. And
when you speak a language well enough to tell a story with perfect timing or put subtle (微妙的) shading on an argument,
that connection is still deeper.
32.What does the word “dwindling” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Growing. B.Lasting. C.Declining. D.Challenging.
33.What is the underlined part “taking a helicopter to the top of Mount Everest” compared to?
A.Using AI tools to do the translation.
B.Doing the work that gives you satisfaction.
C.Making effort to learn a new language.
D.Studying a language aided by technology.
34.Which of the following will the “Others” in paragraph 4 agree with?
A.People should stretch their minds in life.
B.AI translation tools offer a good service.
C.Extreme endurance sports are worth trying.
D.Language learning builds deep connection.
35.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Language learning benefits learners alone.
B.Language learning is of value to human health.
C.We should reflect on language learning methods.
D.We should adopt a new angle on language learning.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Most of the students have a tendency to believe that their brain is not suited for a few subjects that they are
uncomfortable with. 3 6 However, because math is one of the most crucial subjects in any competitive exam,
having a firm grasp on the subject is essential for moving forward with confidence. Here are some useful suggestions to
help you overcome your fear of math.
3 7 Simply memo rising formulae (公式) without understanding the fundamentals will make things difficult
for you. Try to understand the theory and logic behind the formula; once the concept is clear, you don’t have to make
additional efforts to remember the formula.
Focus on your strengths. Spend more time improving your skills on the topics that you are confident about. Go through
previous year’s question papers to have an idea about how much confidence these topics can fetch you. 3 8 This
might help you in calming down and boosts your confidence levels.
Take the right guidance. Never shy away from asking questions. Be it teachers, mentors or friends; put forward your
questions whenever you are in doubt. This will help you have a better understanding of the subject. 3 9
Practice regularly. 4 0 Regular practice helps you improve your speed, makes you learn new and easier
methods of tackling problems and also familiarizes you with a wide range of questions, hence giving you a greater
advantage in the exams.
A.Understand the basics.
B.Change your approach.
C.Mathematics is one of those.
D.Besides, it will also help you overcome your fears.
E.Move on to the difficult topics once you feel confident.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The Christmas holidays were fast approaching, and we had ordered many gifts online. So, when the doorbell rang, I
was sure some of the packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something
and looked down, only to find a beautiful calico kitten (杂色猫) sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes.
There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there?
We figured that someone had found the kitten somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away.
They accurately guessed we would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
My husband called her our little angel, so we named her accordingly. She had a calm aura (气质) about her as she
walked straight into our home and hearts, fitting in perfectly. It seemed as if she was always meant to be in this big housewith us. She was an old soul and turned out to be the perfect companion. Always by my side, she was more like a puppy
than a kitten. Wise beyond her years, she enjoyed wandering through the tunnels and mysterious rooms as much as I did, but
with much less fear. Angelica the calico was courageous.
So, I took a page from her book and decided to be brave, too. There was an underground stone cellar (地窖) I had been
eager to explore. The only way in was down a rickety (摇晃的) ladder to its murky depths. I guessed it was an old root
cellar, probably twelve feet deep.
I had promised my husband that I wouldn’t explore dangerous areas unless he or someone else was around. Though I
knew I was stretching it, I figured that Angelica would count as my companion. I was ready to explore this cellar, and so
was she.
I equipped myself with a good flashlight and warm clothes, and carefully started down the rickety ladder while
Angelica was looking down at me from above. Faint crack and sudden crash were what I could remember.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
