The chain of kindness
The rain was coming down so hard that each drop seemed to explode as it hit the roof of the car. Tom looked
out into the coal-black night, struggling desperately to keep his car on the road. The rain beatdown continuously
and the road was deserted except for Tom and his car.
Tom could see his wheelchair in the backseat from the rear-view mirror and quickly looked down at his thin,
broken legs. He could feel a familiar wave of despair start to wash over him. Suddenly, a loud noise shook him out
of his moment of hopelessness as the car began to bump down the road. “Great,” he thought, “a flat tyre.”
With a heavy sigh, Tom brought the car to a stop, resting his head on the steering wheel, defeated! After a few
seconds, he looked up and peered out of the window. In the distance, he could see a light twinkling in the
blackness.
When Tom approached the house, a young girl around ten years old was standing in the doorway. He pulled up
and rolled down the window. “Are your parents at home?” he shouted over the wind and rain. “I have a flat tyre andI need help.”
“Wait a minute,” the girl replied and went into the house. A few minutes later, she returned with an old man.
The girl held his arm and smiled lovingly up at him.
Tom explained the problem to the old man and added, “I need help because my legs are paralyzed.” The words
came out flat. But he did not know how else he could convey the fact that he needed help from this weak old man
in the middle of the rainstorm. The old man simply nodded.
The old man and the little girl concentrated on their work and the rain was soaking them. Once again, Tom
couldn’t help but feel he was useless. Soon the old man stepped to the window. “You’re all set,” he said. Tom
handed some money to the old man, but he made no move to take it. Finally, the young girls aid, “Grandfather is
blind.”

breaking heat will continue throughout the afternoon,” she said. “If you have to be outside, remember to hydrate(补水) and stay in the shade.”
When they drove by the library, the roofers were still working and the sun was beating down on them.
Sebastian wondered whether they have enough water. Sebastian had just finished two weeks of soccer camp, and
even with frequent water breaks, it had been miserably hot. It made him think again about taking some water to the
roofers. So he shared the idea with his brother, Marcos. Marcos shrugged. “You don’t even know those guys.
They’ve probably gone home already anyway.”
Maybe Marcos was right Sebastian walked to the end of his driveway, where he could get a view of the library.
But the roofers were still there, and the sun was still broiling (酷热的). Sebastian didn’t see any coolers or jugs
anywhere. Then he told Dad, “I really think they need some water.” A look of concern came over Dad’s face. He
picked up his car keys, saying “I think you’re right. It’s only going to get hotter.”

Now the problem was how to get the funds. Dandelion proposed raising money by setting up a booth near the
shop’s entrance to alert people and ask them to donate. The plan was a go!
The next day their friends Bog, Tomiko and Izzy met Doodlebug and Dandelion inside Yule’s. Everyone wasexcited. They made handouts explaining how the garden would attract pollinators, do something to help prevent
flooding, and improve the air.
“We should have a bee mascot (吉祥物),” Izzy suggested. Doodlebug recalled the old bee costume that his
Mom wore for Halloween once. Over the enthusiastic uproar, Dandelion shouted, “And you’ll be the bee,
Doodlebug!” “WILL NOT!” Doodlebug shot back. “Too big. We need to stuff some grownup into that costume.”
But who, then? For ten mad minutes the kids debated loudly.
“Silence, you little noisy kids!” someone suddenly roared. “I’m trying to read about bees in danger!” The
whole crew turned in shock. There sat Doodlebug’s horrible teacher, Mrs. Noodleknocker. Doodlebug had
discovered long ago that she was a World of the Weird fan, but that didn’t make her any nicer. “Bees and butterflies
need help!” Mrs. Noodleknocker cried. “But a person can’t even worry about them peacefully!”

ran out to her. “Buddy, what are you doing here?” Billy asked as he playfully patted her. The dog wagged her tail,
barking in delight.“Alright. Let me try and see if my mom won’t mind taking you in,” Billy said.
Billy ran back and told his mom all about the dog. “Are you crazy, Billy? We barely have enough to sustain
ourselves. I’m sorry, but it’s a no!” Mom declined him.
Billy accepted his mom’s words and went outside to say his goodbyes. However, when he got outside, he
noticed the heavy storm was coming and felt for his new friend.
He had hoped that the dog would seek shelter somewhere, but she just sat there. He fig-ured she was still
waiting for him, so he went out into the rain to try to lead his friend to shelter.
“Come on, girl! Go!” Billy said, trying to lead the dog to the nearby sheltered car park. But she wouldn’t move
an inch. She stuck right by his side. The rain began to pour down harder.

They turned the last corner. Ahead was a group of boys and girls, talking heatedly and looking down at the
sidewalk.
One of the children was Ronny, a new boy who had been in this town only a short time. Ronny’s father had
been sick, so there wasn’t much money for extras - like baseball cap.
“What’s the matter?” Beth asked, anxiously.
“It’s Ronny,” answered Susan. “He’s been working and finally saved up a whole dollar, and now it’s lost!”
Joey went over to Ronny.
“We’ll all help look. We’ll find it!”
“Ronny was going to get that last cap in Rogers’ window,” put in Billy.
“I wanted it a lot. I want to join them.” Ronny said slowly.
Suddenly Joey remembered how Ronny had watched the fellows playing baseball, his eyes lighting up eagerly
as they shouted and ran.

never allowed Cheemi to touch Carl. How Cheemi wished she could play with him!
That year, Panshet Dam collapsed and the waters of the Mutha river, near Pune, had entered the city. The water
rose fast. There was confusion everywhere. Police vans were trying to help.
When water entered their house, Kelly and Gina were on the ground floor. Within seconds the water rose. The
police persuaded Kelly and Gina to climb to the top floor. In the hurry and confusion, they forgot that Carl was
sleeping on the first floor!
The staircases were flooded. It was impossible to get to the bedroom on the first floor. The door to the room
was closed but not bolted(闩上). Any moment the water could rush in. The women panicked. “Carl!” they cried.
“What will happen to our Carl?”
Suddenly the police discovered that one of the bedroom windows was open, but it was too small for an adult to
crawl in. Only a child could. But no one was willing to let their children take the risk.

some bread. So without any hesitation, Paul took the bread and used it to attract the dog as the last hope.
Immediately, the dog came over to the platform edge with wagging (摇) tails. But it couldn’t jump back up. That’s
not the thing, Paul thought.
Just as it put its paws up to get the bread, Paul managed to grab it. Thank goodness. Paul dragged it up on to
the platform. He couldn’t let go of it for fear that it would struggle free a second time. He just held on, stroking its
fur and patting on its head to calm it down. Finally he took the dog into the safety of the staffroom.

“It might not be so bad. We did something like that with our local outreach ministry ( 外联部) on
Thanksgiving.” David said. Hector hadn’t known that. Still, he didn’t think it would be much fun.
The next week passed quickly. Soon it was Christmas Day. It was time for Hector to go to the shelter with his
parents. As they left, Hector sat in the back seat of the car with his arms crossed and a frown on his face.
At the shelter, a man greeted them with a happy smile. “Thank you for coming to help today,” he said. “I hope
you will enjoy your time here.” Hector seriously doubted it.
The man told Dad where he could serve food and he pointed Mom toward several large boxes that were filled
with presents.

more careful. In my head, I retraced my steps again and again but finally gave up.
That night, it turned colder and we had a snow shower. I enjoyed a comfort-food dinner, played soft music,
and settled into a peaceful evening. It was peaceful until I heard the frightening noise of my car alarm from the
garage. I rushed to the car, inserted the key in the door and finally opened it, and then waited until the alarmstopped. I felt red-faced as I imagined my next-door neighbors being frightened and annoyed.
I went back in the house but it started again. I turned it off, went back inside, and the alarm went off again. I
repeated the process.
Back in the house, I waited, but the next sound was the front doorbell. Assuming it was a neighbor ready to
blame me, I opened the door slowly and turned on the light with apologies ready.

is $70,” the owner said. “The stones are worthless. We’re only interested in the gold.”
Over the next week, I constantly applied for jobs as my bank account grew smaller. I felt as if the world was
closing in on me.
On a weekend afternoon, I dropped Kristil in a wealthy gated community for a birthday party. I watched as she
went in, surrounded by all the nice things we couldn’t afford. I drove home defeated.
Back at home, I glanced out the window. It had been snowing on and off all morning wind.
I noticed a small woman with short white hair struggling to open her car door against theAs she got out, I realized it was my old professor, Sister Esther Heffernan. I hadn’t seen her since we’d met for
lunch three months ago. I’d first met Sister Esther 10 years earlier when I was her student at Edgewood College in
Madison. Kristil was three at the time, and I sometimes took her to class. Sister Esther was understanding and
would bring coloring books to occupy Kristil.

overheard the foster carer talking about the girl, and he knew she was brought here because her single mother had
died, leaving her an orphan. As she walked in, James could see her eyes were teary, and she was looking around,
confused.
Still feeling bad for her, James returned to his other engagements that day. Suddenly, the girl came running up
to him and began pulling his shirt.“Daddy, did you come for me? Are you going to take me home?” she asked, smiling through tears, and James
was shocked. He’d never had a girlfriend, much less a child. Why was she calling him dad? Trying his best to hide
his shock, he smiled and knelt in front of her.“Hi, I’m James. You’re Layla, right? I’m sorry, sweetie, but I am not
your daddy.”

and kind of bent over. And there was that crooked cane she used when she walked. But the real reason they were
nervous about her was that two days ago their ball had gone into her yard and knocked over some flowers in the
garden and broke the glasses of the attic. They had never apologized.
When Mama and the kids were loading their groceries into the car, Mrs. Marie came out of the supermarket
pushing her little collapsible shopping cart.
“Where are you going?” called Mama.“To the bus stop,” she said, “The bus goes right by my house.” “So does our car,” said Mama.

Nicholas called out to the terrified girls and instructed them to follow him. The sister—Seionna, 18; Shaylee,
13; and Kalia, 1―and their family friend, Livian, 13, followed his directions to escape to the safety of the street.
“For a minute I didn’t understand it,” Shaylee recalled. “But my sister ran upstairs with the baby in her hands,
yelling at us to get up because there’s a fire. That’s when we went downstairs, and Nicolas was downstairs helping
us.”
Once outside in the fresh air, the girls shook in far and coughed from the smoke. However, they soon realized
that their 6-year-old sister, Kaylani, had not escaped with them.

improve your grade next week. What do you say?” “That’s so sweet of you, Tim! Let’s meet at my house after
school today,” Christine saidwith a smile. “Sure!” Tim replied.
Christine lived on the outskirts (郊区) of town. It took Tim, who passed his driving test recently, half an hour
to drive there. Once his car neared Christine’s estate, he was shocked to see a blazing (熊熊燃烧的) fire. Upon
driving closer, he realized her house was on fire. Frightened, he quickly picked up his phone and called 911.
Then, Tim took off bis shir, grabbed a bottle of water from his car, and poured it on the shirt. He wrapped the
wet shirt around his face, as he had seen in movies, and entered the house. He started climbing towards the hallway
window of Christine’s bedroom.
Tim found a baseball bat in the hall. It took him five whole minutes to swing it hard enough to break the
window. Once the glass was broken, he rushed towards Christine’s room. He couldn’t see much because of the
thick black smoke floating in the air, but he managed to locale her. She was lying unconscious (昏迷的) on her bed
after breathing in the smoke.

At work, feeling helpless, I wiped tables and took orders and thought. HARD! The Saturday afternoon lunch
rush was not enough to lull me from my thoughts. Wracked with grief, I pondered the power of Facebook and the
collective strength of human empathy. I raced from the end of my shift to ask strangers on the internet for help.
“My Nanny Del has cancer. It’s terminal and she will never see the world. Please send her postcards so she can
see the world from her armchair. I can offer nothing but gratitude.”
I resolved not to breathe a word of this; should nothing come, I couldn’t bear to carry her disappointment
along with my own. Should something wander into our humble little letterbox, I would consider it a blessing and
embrace it like I embraced her little, shrinking frame.
Days turned to weeks and Nanny’s health worsened rapidly in the early months of 2018. Life took me through
my full-time study, babysitting and waiting tables, along with the responsibility of caring for a grandparent who
was too sick to care for herself. As I helped Nanny in the early hours of those mornings, she would chat to me,
sometimes joys, other times, sorrows. Whatever she shared became precious.
