Georgy lived a hard life with his mother Amelia Sedley. He studied in a little local school and
did well at all his lessons. Miss Dobbin, Georgy’s teacher, followed his progress with interest, and
was ready to be helpful and knew how poor the Sedleys were.
“Do let Georgy spend the day with me next Saturday,” Miss Dobbin said to Amelia one day.
“Miss Osborne, Georgy’s aunt, is coming to visit, and I know she’d love to see her brother’s son.
And who knows, perhaps the boy’s grandfather will do something for him one day.”
The meeting took place and Miss Osborne liked Georgy a lot. After the meeting, while having
dinner at the dinner table with her father that night, Miss Osborne could not hide her emotion.
“What’s the matter?” old Mr. Osborne shouted at last. Georgy’s aunt burst into tears. “Oh sir,”she said, “I’ve seen little Georgy. He’s such a beautiful boy—and so like his father!”
The old man did not say a word, but his hands trembled (颤抖), and he sat staring at the table for
a long time.
Soon Georgy told his mother about another visitor at the house on a day he spent with Miss
Dobbin. “An old gentle man came today,” the boy said. “He watched when I had my riding son. He
stared and stared at me.
Amelia knew that the boy had seen his grandfather, and she waited nervously to see what would
happen next. After several days, a lawyer came with a letter from Mr. Osborne. “Mr. Osborne offers
to take his grandson Georgy, who will then inherit (继承) the fortune (巨款) which would have gone
to his father. He will also give Mrs. Amelia Osborne a regular allowance (补贴) to enable her and her
family to live in comfort. If she marries again, as is said to be likely, this allowance will still
continue. In return, the boy will live with Mr. Osborne, who will allow him to visit his mother once
or twice in her own home.”
Amelia was rarely angry, but today she stood up, tore this letter into a hundred pieces, and threw
them on the floor.

Cai Jiekai has spent around 80,000 yuan on his face since his first plastic surgery (整形手术)four years ago. “Getting plastic surgeries is just as usual as body building. Both make men more
handsome and confident,” says the 33-year-old young man.
Cai is among a growing number of Chinese men using plastic surgeries to change their physical
appearance to increase their self-confidence. In 2021, the market for beauty medicine in China was
worth more than 495 billion yuan. Around 15 percent of customers were males, according to a report
by plastic surgery social networking app Gengmei.
There is a rising trend (潮流) of young men turning to plastic surgeries; most male customers are
in their teens or 20s. “Some men just want to please themselves, while others hope to improve their
possibility in job hunting or dating,” says Wang Jun, vice-president of marketing for Gengmei. “Men
are under the same social stress as women and their confidence and competitiveness would be more
or less weakened by facial and body weaknesses.”
However, experts point out the risks of plastic surgeries. Fan Jufeng, director of the Plastic
Surgery Department at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, does not encourage people, no matter men or
women, to “blindly” go under the knife.
Fan also warned the public of the bad influences of live streaming celebrities (流量明星) who
spread the misunderstanding that being pretty goes above all else. “Whether to have plastic surgeries
is a personal choice, but people should not be addicted (上瘾) to it,” Fan says. “Think twice on it.
After all, a rich and beautiful inside world is far more important than a pretty face.”
9.How does the writer begin his passage?
A.By giving an example. B.By listing numbers.
C.By making comparisons. D.By giving suggestions.
10.Wang Jun’s words in Paragraph 3 are mentioned to .
A.show the advantages of men’s plastic surgeries
B.explain the reasons for men’s plastic surgeries
C.avoid the misunderstanding of plastic surgeries

11.What’s Fan Jufeng’s attitude (态度) towards men’s plastic surgeries?
A.Supportive. B.Angry. C.Uninterested. D.Doubtful.
12.Which is the best title of the passage?
A.Plastic surgeries, Blind or Not B.Women’s Plastic surgeries, Yes or No
C.Plastic surgeries, Male or Female D.Women’s Plastic surgeries, risks or chances
(D)Today, we are building more islands than ever before. Why are islands built? One big reason is
tourism. For example, the Pearl Island in Qatar, a fantastic man-made island with excellent five-star
hotels, is popular with tourists around the world. Another reason is to provide more land for people
in crowded cities. Flevoland, the largest man-made island, is home to more than 400,000 people.
People also build islands to make good use of energy. For example, in 2021, Denmark planned to
build an island for about 600 wind turbines(风力涡轮机)that could turn wind power into
electricity.
With more islands being built, the cost comes along. To build islands, workers take tons of sand
and stones from the bottom of the sea, making the water become cloudy. If it gets too hazy, sunlight
can’t pass through. It’s bad for coral reefs(珊瑚礁)and sea plants that need plenty of sunlight to
live. If they are dying, other sea life that depends on them for food will be in danger.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Engineers have created some ways to reduce the bad effects. For
example, they use a special net(网)to stop sand from spreading through the sea while working.
They also create a “living seawall(海堤)” which provides friendly living conditions for sea life.
Actually, whether or not to build islands is not a simple question. Perhaps its bright sides are far
more important to humans. It also calls for more attention to be paid to the environment in the
process. Let’s take action in a smart way!
13.Why was the Pearl Island in Qatar built?
A.To take sand out of the sea. B.To provide land for airports.
C.To interest visitors worldwide. D.To turn wind power into electricity.
14.What does the underlined word “hazy” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Warm. B.Unclear. C.Bright. D.Uncertain.
15.What does the writer mean in the last paragraph?
A.It’s not acceptable to build man-made islands.
B.People can easily solve problems of building islands.
C.Man-made islands will bring much harm to the life on earth.
D.People should take action to avoid the harm of building islands.
16.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.Why We Build More Islands B.The Cost of Man-Made Islands
C.A Creative Way to Build Islands D.Man-Made Islands and the Environment

In China, more and more vacationers want to spend their spare time at lesser-known vacationlands to have unique, relaxing holiday experiences. 1 7
According to data from the online travel agency Qunar, as cited by Beijing Daily, during the
National Day, the number of rooms booked at hotels in less traveled cities during the holiday was up
30% year on year. 1 8 Some young people who have little time for themselves simply
stayed at a hotel to make the holiday more relaxing.
Dai Bin, president of the China Tourism Academy, told Beijing Daily, “Vacationers avoided
popular holiday destinations in order to enjoy some peace and quiet.” As people become more
mature (成熟的) travelers, they don’t want to follow the crowd. Some of them simply want to take a
rest somewhere quiet for a couple of days to experience the local culture deeply.
In addition, lesser-known attractions are not as “commercial (商业的)” and “standardized” as
developed ones. 1 9 And unlike popular destinations, some under explored (未充分开发
的) places with little online showing can also offer more surprises.
“The rise of reverse tourism (逆向旅游) is not a bad thing,” said an opinion piece in Zhengzhou
Daily. “ 20 It also brings more possibilities to the tourism market,” the article explains.
“More importantly, the trend is set to force popular destinations to better themselves instead of
resting on the past.”
A.It means that vacationers now have more choices.
B.They can offer more real and natural experiences.
C.Tourism used to be about sightseeing, but now it is about experiences.
D.So travelers have become more careful to choose places with fewer tourists.
E.“Reverse tourism” becomes a new fashion among young vacationers in China.

TCM wins the hearts of young people for its effectiveness(效果).
Jin Ying, 25, is a lover of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She took part in a three-month
training course on acupuncture and tuina (针灸推拿) in the winter of 2023 at Beijing University of
Chinese Medicine.
Jin’s life has been different since the training. She changed her life habits after learning the
Five Elements theory (五行学说). For example, she avoided sweating too much during exercise in
winter because the cold of winter means people should slow down, according to TCM. For her,
learning these skills and theories was not about becoming a TCM doctor but rather about accepting a
new lifestyle.
She is not an unusual example of young people loving TCM. A survey by China Youth Daily
showed that 93.3 percent of the 1,000 young people had tried different TCM treatments.
“I have seen a rising number of young people come to me for neck and back pains, which are
usually related to the elderly,” said Ma Huifang, a TCM doctor at Guoyitang, a TCM hospital
affiliated with Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
Between Western medicine and TCM, young people often choose TCM “due to its
effectiveness,” according to Ma.
Some people question why TCM treats the same illnesses with different prescriptions (处方).
“This is actually an advantage of TCM, rather than a shortcoming, as it can be a more accurate
treatment for different patients,” Ma explained.
Younger age groups are welcoming TCM, and, at the same time, TCM is also benefiting young
people. As Jin noted, “It helps young people understand Chinese medicine and learn why it is
believed to be a treasure of our Chinese culture.”
