Part 3 Reading and Writing
(第三部分 读写)
Ⅵ. Reading comprehension (阅读理解) (本大题共 25 题,共 50 分)
A. Choose the best answer (根据以下内容,选择最恰当的答案) (12 分)
① It is common to surf the Internet at home now. However, a recent survey showed over
90% of parents are not clear what websites their children visit. I strongly believe that a training
project should be started to help parents to improve their internet and computer skills. Then
they can better monitor and guide their children.
② Providing training would get parents to pay more attention to their children’s online
activities. This is one advantage. If parents had a better understanding of the internet and
websites, they would see the need to make sure that their children use it properly and
responsibly.
③ Providing training to parents would allow parents to help their children with their
schoolwork as well. These days, some homework of online courses needs to be done on
computer. If parents have poor computer skills, they will be of little or no help with the
homework. That can make parents very upset. Some people argue that it is good that students
can work independently on computers. However, it is clear that students, especially young
students often need this kind of home support.
④ Improving parents’ Internet and computer skills might also be a good way for parents
to improve their relationships with their children. These days, children spend a lot of their free
time on computers. If parents want to be part of their free time, they need to see that playing on教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:

computers can be a fun family activity. Joining their children can help parents bridge the gap
between them and their children.
⑤ Most people believe that children need to be helped and guided to use the Internet in a
proper and responsible way. Therefore, training is extremely important.

A Bottle of Milk
I recently heard a story about a very famous research scientist who was interviewed by a
newspaper reporter. He was asked why he was able to be so much more ____65____ than the
other person. He said that it all came from an ____66____ with his mother when he was
young.
He tried to remove a bottle of milk from the bridge when he lost his hold on the bottle,
spilling the milk all over the kitchen floor! Instead of ____67____ at him, his mother said,
“Robert, what a great and beautiful mess you have made! I have never seen such a huge pool
of milk. Well, the damage has already been done. Would you like to play with the milk for a
few minutes before we clean it up?”
Indeed, Robert played it. After a few minutes, his mother said, “Robert, Whenever you
make a mess like this, you have to clean it up. So we would use a sponge (海绵), a towel or a
mop. Which do you prefer?” He ____6 8 ____ the sponge and together they cleaned up the
spilled milk. His mother then said, “You know, what we have here is a difficult experiment in
how effectively to carry a big milk bottle with two tiny hands. Now, let’s ___ 69 ____ a way to
carry it without dropping it.” The little boy learned that if he grasped the bottle at the top neat
the lip with both hands, he could carry it safely. The scientist then said that it was at that
moment that he knew he didn’t need to be afraid to make ____ 70 ___ and he’d like to try a lot
of things in different ways.

When Words Get Stuck
Does this happen to you? You are in the middle of a conversation. Suddenly, you get stuck
on a word. It’s r ____7 1 ____ there … if you could just remember. You move on. Hours later,
the word comes to you. However, you no longer need it— that conversation is over.
What happened? You have just experienced a tip-of-the-tongue moment. Well, you don’t教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:
kingcsa333
need to feel n ____7 2 ___ about it. Such moments are just part of the way we communicate.
Lise Abrams is a psychology(心理学)professor at the University of Florida. He has studied
tip-of-the-tongue moments for more than 20 years. According to his r ____ 73 ____ , anyone, in
any culture, any language and any age group, experiences tip-of-the-tongue moments.
We are more likely to get stuck on words we s ___ 74 ____ use. It’s because we’re not so
familiar with these words. Besides, proper nouns(专有名词)lead to tip-of-the-tongue moments
more often. The reason might be that a proper noun may m ____ 75 __ different people or things
that just have the same name.
Here is an example. Think of the name of the hero in the last novel you read. Now think
of a tool with many buttons you use to do calculations. Which word comes to your mind first?
“Calculator!” you will say. That’s because all calculators s ___ 76 ___ those same
features(特点). As a result, you have more “clues” when you try to remember the word. On the
other hand, dozens — if not hundreds — of novels have a Tom. They are all very different from
each other.
Can we do something to a ____ 77 __ tip-of-the-tongue moments? Well, according to
Abrams, one way is to use certain words or names more often. Say, if you can never seem to
remember the name of that singer your classmates often talk about, try saying his or her name
out loud whenever you can. It could save you from embarrassment someday.
D. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答问题) (12 分)
If you have ever had trouble doing things you should do or would like to do, you have
experienced procrastination(拖延症). When you procrastinate, instead of working on important
meaningful tasks, you find yourself performing meaningless activities.
If you are a procrastinator, perhaps you spend lots of time watching TV, playing video
games, checking Facebook, eating, cleaning or walking back and forth through the room.
Afterwards, you feel powerless and have the feeling of guilt and trouble. Once again, you end
up doing nothing. Sound familiar?
Lazy people don’t do anything and just feel fine with it. Procrastinators, however, want to
actually do something but can’t force themselves to start.
Another fact about procrastination is that it is different from relaxation. Relaxing recharges
you with energy, while procrastination makes you not energetic. The less energy you have, the
greater the chances you will put off your responsibilities, and, once more, you will achieve
nothing.
My dad always used to say, “Peter, you need to learn how to give yourself orders.” I would教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:
kingcsa333
always answer, “I tell myself what to do, I just don’t listen.”
Most likely, failure of the ability to listen to ourselves is the main reason. The scientific
name of this ability is self-regulation(自律).
Self-regulation is the ability to actively control your emotions. The more developed this
ability is, the more often you will do what you tell yourself to do. Good news is it is possible
to have self-regulation by training. You need to begin by setting the bar(门槛) as low as possible.
Creating habits isn’t about quantity; it’s about small steps and regular repetition.
Once you learn a new habit, you can exercise your willpower muscle(肌肉). As you slowly
raise the bar, your willpower will gain strength day by day.
Gradual changes are more pleasant than sudden, great changes. Therefore, bigger success
can be made.
