四、阅读理解(20小题,每小题2分,共40分)
阅读下面四篇语言材料,然后按文后要求做题。
A
The solar system is full of amazing planets. Here are four of them.
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and very small. A day
on Mercury is much longer than that on Earth. It takes about two
Earth months to turn around once.
第 4 页 共 12 页Unit 6 阶段测试二
Uranus is unique. It’s the seventh planet from the Sun. It is
strange that Uranus rotates(旋转)on its side. Most planets
rotate upright, while Uranus seems to roll around the Sun.
Jupiter is the largest planet. It has a big red spot, a long-lasting
giant storm. Jupiter has over 70 moons of different sizes. It plays
a key role in maintaining the solar system’s balance.
Saturn is famous for its beautiful ice-and-rock rings. Despite
being far from the Sun, it’s very interesting. It has many moons
like Jupiter. Some, like Titan with a thick atmosphere, have
strange features.

Now satellites are helping to forecast(预报)the weather. They are in space and
can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大气)
because this is where the weather forms. They send these pictures to the weather
station. So meteorologists(气象专家)can see the weather of any part of the world.
From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.
Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite
pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with
earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few
hours. This may mean the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next
weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.
So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites
were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now
they can make good forecasts for 3 to 5 days. Soon they may be able to forecast the
weather for a week or more ahead(提前).
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
( ) 46. Why do we use the weather satellites to take pictures of the atmosphere?
A. The weather satellites can do it easily.
B. Clouds form there.
C. The weather forms there.
D. The pictures can forecast the weather.
( ) 47. When do meteorologists forecast the weather?
A. When they have received satellite pictures.
B. After they have compared new satellite pictures with earlier ones.
C. Before they receive satellite pictures.
D. While they study satellite pictures.
( ) 48. How long will we possibly be able to forecast the weather?
A. For one day. B. For two days.
第 6 页 共 12 页Unit 6 阶段测试二
C. For five days. D. For seven days or even longer.
( ) 49. What are satellites mainly used for according to the text?
A. Protecting Earth.
B. Receiving pictures of the atmosphere.
C. Weather forecasting.
D. Doing other work in many ways.
( ) 50. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?
A. Satellites can reach any part of the world.
B. Meteorologists can see the weather of any part of the world from the
pictures taken by satellites.
C. Meteorologists can only forecast the weather for 24 or 48 hours now.
D. Weather satellites are a great help to meteorologists.

On April 10th, 2019, the first picture of a black hole was shown to people. Here
are some interesting facts about black holes.
What’s a black hole? Albert Einstein first raised the idea in his Theory of General
Relativity(《广义相对论》)in 1915. A black hole is a place in space where the gravity
is so strong that even light cannot get out. Some scientists think the smallest black
holes formed when the universe began.
How big is a black hole? Black holes can be big or small. Scientists think the
smallest black holes are as small as just one atom(原子). Unlike small black holes,
the mass of a big black hole can be more than one million suns together.
If black holes are “black”, how do scientists know they are there? A black hole
cannot be seen, because strong gravity pulls all of the light into the middle of the
black hole. But scientists can see how the strong gravity affects(影响)the stars and
gas around the black hole. Scientists can study stars to find out if they’re moving
around a black hole.
Could a black hole destroy(摧毁)Earth? The answer is no. Earth will not fall
into a black hole because no black hole is close enough to the solar system for Earth
to do that.

Venus is one of the eight planets in the solar system. It is the second planet from
the Sun at the center of the solar system. 5 6
● Extreme Temperature(极端的温度)
57 Although it is not the closest planet to the Sun, its thick atmosphere
makes the surface temperature extremely high.
● Unique Rotation(独特的自转)
Venus has a very special rotation pattern. While most planets rotate counter-

clockwise, Venus rotates clockwise. 58
● Bright Appearance
59 Venus is one of the brightest objects in the sky after the Sun and Moon. It
can often be seen even in the daytime under certain conditions because of the bright
appearance.
● Exploration
The exploration of Venus has been an important responsibility for the scientific
community. 60 These missions have helped us prove some theories related to
the planet and learn more about its atmosphere, surface, and other features.

Dear Tom,
I’ve always been interested in space because the stars seem so strange and
fascinating. Recently, I’ve been reading a lot about planets.
61 Pluto is no longer considered as a planet, it still holds a special place in my
heart.
the Sun, at the center of our solar system, is the 6 2 (bright) star we can see.
It’s so bright 6 3 it can light up the whole solar system. However, some planets have
very low temperatures. It makes me wonder if there is any 6 4 (live) beings on those

Planets have many things 6 5 common. Many planets have air and earth. But
they are also 6 6 from each other. Mars, for example, has a very thin atmosphere,
while Venus has a very thick one.
Scientists did a lot of explorations and they are all 6 7 (relate) to the planets.
They believe that each planet plays an 6 8 (importance) role in the universe. Space
exploration is also full of 69 (responsibility). We need to prove our knowledge
about the planets and publish more research.
Maybe one day we’ll find out more amazing things about these planets. Because
our minds are 70 (fill) with so many curiosities, we’ll never stop our steps.
Yours,
Mike
