Asking for help isn’t always easy. It can be tricky if you’re not sure who to ask. You might
feelworried thatthey won’twantto help orthey haven’t got thetime. If you’re ashamed that you
need help, or if you think asking for a helping hand is a sign of weakness, it makes it harder to
turn to another person.Angela McMillan, a counsellor who advises young people, says “We may

Everyone finds things difficult sometimes. McMillan believes asking for help is brave.
“Letting someone in, trusting them with your story and asking them to listen to you and help you
takes great courage. ” By asking for help, you can also practise speaking up for yourself and
saying what you need. It also shows you how someone else might feel when they’re struggling,
