My three-year-old son doesn’t understand time. He doesn’t knowwhat minutes or hours are.
“Yesterday” could be the day before, or it could be April. When he asks how long his meal will
take to cook, I say, “A bit.” The problem is that I’ve quickly discovered that “a bit” made him
confused. And so, I started to use comparisons. I say, “It takes as long as a bath,” or “It’ll be one
episodeofSpiderman.”
In fact, Thousands of years ago, people lived without clocks. Up until the late Middle Ages,
people always thought of time as something related to the jobs they did. Mowing the lawn
wouldn’t take “half an hour”; it would take the time it took to mow the lawn. Most people would
expect to work daylight hours, which meant long, sixteen-hour days in the summer, and a much
shortereighthoursinthewinter.Everythingtakesaslongasittakes.
Now, without the clock, it’s hard to imagine how society managed. It’s hard to catch a train,
“After I’ve brushed my teeth,” or to watch a movie at the cinema “when the sun goes down.”
Clocks have completely influenced how we see the world. Just think about how often you check
the timeonyourphone or watch.Your lifeisrun bythe clock. It’s like we have dividedourlives
into tiny blocks, and we put bits of ourselves into those blocks. The world used to move as the
worldmoved.Now,wetrytobreaktheworldtomeettheneedsoftheclock.
Sometimes, though, we need to throw off our clocks. It’s good just to let the world happen.
