On the roof of an office building in central London, among the air-conditioners and TV aerials, sit twelve wooden boxes. From a distance, they look like ordinary storage chests. In fact, each one is home to about 50,000 honeybees. Urban beekeeping — keeping beehives in cities — has become one of the fastest-growing hobbies in Britain, and cities from New York to Berlin are following the trend.

The reasons behind it are surprisingly practical. City rooftop hives are often warmer than those in the countryside, because buildings absorb heat during the day and release it slowly at night. This means bees can start work earlier in spring and finish later in autumn. There are also fewer pesticides in the heart of a city than on modern farms, and parks, balconies and gardens provide a wide variety of flowers from March to September. As a result, urban bees are often healthier and more productive than their country cousins.

Beekeepers point out that the hobby helps people, too. Office workers who visit the rooftop hives describe the experience as calming. "When you open a hive, you must slow down, move gently and focus completely," says Sarah Whitfield, who keeps four hives above her design studio. "For half an hour, my phone might as well not exist."

There are challenges, however. In some areas, so many people have taken up beekeeping that there are not enough flowers to feed all the bees, and honeybees can crowd out wild insects such as bumblebees. Experts therefore advise beginners to plant bee-friendly flowers before buying a hive, and to take a proper training course first. Local councils may also require keepers to register their hives and place them where passers-by will not be bothered.

For those who get it right, the reward is sweet — quite literally. A single healthy rooftop hive can produce twenty to thirty jars of honey in a good summer, which keepers often give to neighbours or sell for local charities.

1. What do we learn about urban beekeeping from Paragraph 1?

A. It first appeared in New York.

B. It is spreading to more and more cities.

C. It can only be done on office roofs.

D. It was once a way to store things.

2. According to Paragraph 2, city hives are often warmer because ______.

A. buildings take in heat by day and give it off at night

B. there are fewer pesticides in the countryside

C. city flowers bloom from March to September

D. bees in cities work longer hours than country bees

3. Sarah Whitfield mentions her phone in Paragraph 3 to show ______.

A. how dangerous beekeeping can be

B. why she dislikes modern technology

C. that beekeeping helps her slow down and focus

D. that her design studio is always busy

4. What do experts advise beginners to do?

A. Feed wild insects in the parks nearby.

B. Learn the skills and plant the right flowers first.

C. Keep at least twelve hives on one roof.

D. Sell their honey for local charities.

Bees Are Small, but Their Work Feeds the World

When you sit down to breakfast, bees have probably helped set the table. Apples, berries, tomatoes and even coffee all depend on these busy insects to carry pollen from flower to flower. 36 ______ Scientists estimate that about one third of the food produced worldwide relies on animal pollinators, and bees do most of that work.

Unfortunately, bees are in trouble worldwide. Wild grasslands have been turned into roads and buildings; chemicals used on farms can poison them; and extreme weather disturbs their life cycle. 37 ______ In some regions, beekeepers report losing a large share of their colonies every winter.

The good news is that you do not need to be a farmer or a scientist to help. 38 ______ A window box of lavender, a balcony pot of herbs, or a school garden with wildflowers can all provide food for passing bees.

What you plant matters as much as where you plant it. Bees need flowers from early spring to late autumn, so try to choose plants that bloom at different times. 39 ______ And never spray chemicals on flowers while bees are visiting them — a poisoned flower is a trap rather than a meal.

Water is important, too. Bees drink it, and on hot days they also use it to cool their hives. 40 ______ A shallow dish with a few pebbles rising above the water gives them a safe landing place, so they will not drown.

选项:

A. In fact, cities are full of tiny spaces that can become bee cafés.

B. Without this service, many plants could not produce seeds or fruit.

C. Besides, a single hive can produce dozens of jars of honey a year.

D. That is where a simple bowl of water can make a difference.

E. Scientists warn that if the decline continues, food prices may rise sharply.

F. The best first step is simply to grow more flowers.

G. Planting groups of the same flower together also helps bees find food faster.

1. B。首段末句点明伦敦之外「New York to Berlin are following the trend」,即正在向更多城市扩散;A、C、D 均与原文不符。

2. A。第二段明确写道「buildings absorb heat during the day and release it slowly at night」,对应 A 项;B、C 虽在段中出现但与「更暖」无因果;D 项是结果而非原因。
