I was eight years old and wasn’t aware of all the arrangements being made for our journey as a family to London in 1950. My mother was in great pain and wished to visit specialists in London. My father reluctantly had to sell our property in Queensland. The day before we boarded the ship, Father unwillingly said goodbye to his five-year-old cattle dog, Spider, who was loved by us all. Father’s friend Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas, as he had been getting to know Spider for many weeks.
Six weeks later, an airletter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. Sandy had advertised constantly on ABC radio and other regional newspapers. Despite many “sightings”, the dog was never found. It seems Spider just kept running and searching for us. As he was cattle dog, my father thought he would be shot or dingo-trapped, because of his appearance. But our family thought that Father held a secret hope that Spider was still alive.
We sailed back to Australia two years later and re-established our home. My father immediately began his own search for Spider. One cold winter’s Saturday morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an elderly lady living on her own on the outskirts of the town. As she told my father on the telephone, it was “just glimpses of a dingo-type dog in the shadows” of her disused tennis court. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework.
We set off in his blue and black Jensen car which he had brought back from England. It was hardly the right vehicle for the rough roads we travelled that day. Five and a half hours later, we found the run-down old property. Sadly, she told my father that the “dingo dog” hadn’t been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle for Spider.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the animal shelter(环境描写:夕阳无限好), Sarah walked through the rows of cages until her eyes landed on(无灵主语句)a small, trembling dog huddled (蜷缩) in the corner. "I think I've found the one," Sarah whispered softly to herself as she looked into the dog's sad eyes. This timid, abandoned dog had no idea that a journey of transformation with friendly people lay in store for him.(拟人修辞手法;伏笔:最后Buddy不再胆小,有家的归属)
The shelter staff explained that the dog, named Buddy, had a difficult past and was very shy and scared. Sarah extended a hand, offering a soothing tone, "Hey sweetie, you must have a story to tell, but from now on, you've got a buddy in me."
Bringing Buddy home was just the beginning of their journey, which was rocky(用的极好:困难重重) at first for him. Everything was strange and new, causing him to hide under furniture and startle at every sound. Therefore, Sarah provided a cozy bed, delicious meals, and most importantly, heaps of love and comfort.(成堆的爱和安慰)
Slowly but surely,(副词做状语)he started to emerge from his shell,(暗喻修辞手法)wagging his tail tentatively and gazing at Sarah with a glimmer of hope in his eyes. Under Sarah's patient and loving guidance, Buddy flourished,(暗喻修辞手法)even learning tricks and commands, and forming a deep bond with his new owner.(伏笔:Buddy学了技巧,听得懂组着的命令,为下文能够在治疗中心帮助有自闭症的孩子做好铺垫)

It was Jack's 8th birthday. His aunt bought a small nice notebook for him as a birthday present. Jack found there was a place in it for a pencil, so he valued it a lot and always kept it in his pocket. (伏笔:Jack在笔记本上写上救援信息让kris带回)Having found something interesting, he would write it down in the notebook.
One afternoon, after Jack returned from school, he called his best friend, Kris, a well-trained shepherd dog and said, "Come, Kris! Let's go out and have fun." They went to the Pasture field (牧场) to catch the butterflies and there they found a shaft (通风井), which seemed to be deserted for a long time. Jack sat down on the edge of the shaft, bending over to see how deep it was. Suddenly, he lost his balance and fell in. "Help! Help!" Jack called desperately. But no response at all. He was so far away from the house. He made several attempts to climb up the shaft but again he failed! Now Jack was exhausted and frustrated. When Kris saw his master falling into the shaft, the little good companion ran round and round, reaching down and trying to pull him out. Unfortunately, a piece of rock gave way under his feet, and he fell in the shaft too!
It was getting dark. When Jack's mother, Mrs. Lee came back from work and found there was no one at home, she was anxious and worried. Without any clue at home, she decided to look for Jack outside. She went to all the trees under which Jack was in the habit of playing, but he was nowhere to be found. By this time, the sun had gone down.

I was doing homework with my friend Ollie at his home when he randomly started scribbling (乱画)a fish. But not just any fish. This fish was riding a skateboard and blowing a bubble that said “I’d rather be skating!” I laughed and drew a sea star saying “Quit fooling around and get to work!”(背景,引出话题:画动物的海报)
Just then, Ollie’s grandma Abuela and her friend Mr. Goldberg came into the kitchen. Mr. Goldberg was in charge of the local animal shelter. Abuela poured their tea and inquired about how things were going at the animal shelter. Mr. Goldberg sighed, shaking his head. He explained that not enough people were adopting pets, resulting in too many animals without homes(冲突1:无人收养动物).
Overhearing the conversation, Ollie offered to adopt some excitedly. But Abuela said that one noisy parrot was plenty for this house. “Blue isn’t noisy,” defended Ollie. “He’s just musical.”(伏笔:鹦鹉的特点,后面设计海报应体现其特点)
“I’d have a whole farm full of animals if I could,” I said. “But my parents say two cats and a hamster(仓鼠)are enough.”
Mr. Goldberg said he kept trying to attract people to adopt animals, but found it hard to get people’s attention these days(重申冲突1:努力让人收养动物无效). Ollie drew a sad whale, and I wrote the words “Please adopt me” in the shape of a whale spout(喷水)(伏笔:朋友两人的创意! Mr. Goldberg took a look at our drawings and made favorable comments on them, saying that these clever talking animals just might grab people’s attention. And he asked us if we were willing to design a poster for his animal shelter, a proposal we happily accepted. We decided to draw some ideas on our own and meet up again the next afternoon(伏笔:各自的想法会是什么?
That night, when I was sitting in the living room brainstorming ideas for the poster, my little brother brought in our hamster, Mr. Nibbles, to give him a little run-around time. He made a hamster playground out of couch pillows and Mr. Nibbles began to run around merrily

Nature, while beautiful, could also be unpredictable and merciless. But most importantly, we bear in mind that in the darkest times, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, just like Mrs. Evans' cabin light.
One bright summer day, my friend Peter and I decided to venture into the unexplored trails of the Great Smoky Mountains. Blessed with rich biodiversity and fascinating landscapes, the national park seemed a perfect getaway. Little did we know that our casual hike would soon turn into an unexpected personal incident, forever engraved in our memories.
We set off early in the morning, equipped with our backpacks and a map that was supposed to guide us through the winding trails. The sun was up, casting long shadows on the forest floor as we set off on our journey. We trekked (艰难行走), laughed, and marveled at the beauty of nature around us.
As we trekked through the dense forests, taking in the natural wonders around us, we couldn't help but feel a sense of adventure coursing through our veins. The trail was rugged and uneven, but we persevered through the challenging landscape.
Midway through our expedition, we stumbled upon a breathtaking waterfall, its glistening waters cascading down the rocks in a quiet and peaceful melody. We sat down by the water's edge, taking a moment to get lost in the beauty of nature. The cool mist from the waterfall enveloped us, and we felt refreshed and energetic.
As the day wore on, we ventured deeper into the wilderness, eager to explore every corner of this natural paradise. We were so absorbed in the beauty of nature that just didn't notice our way and it seemed that we could not find the way back to the familiar part of the forest.
Panicking, we scrambled to find our way back but the dense vegetation and winding trails only served to confuse us further. We tried to remember any possible signs that might lead us back. No sooner had we celebrated our return to the clear trails than something worse happened.

Tomato Changed My Life
Doing things without being planned was never my strength.
As a 14-year-old, I would refuse to go for walks around the block with my friends if I was the least bit behind in my schoolwork.
Unlike most teenagers, I lived not in my room, but in an unused kitchen upstairs where I spread my books and papers on a large round table. I spent considerable time there, working continuously for hours, and my mother worried. She would try to lure(引诱) me away. “Come and watch the parade!” she would call from downstairs. “All neighbors are out there!” She thought of all kinds of tricks--the swimming pool, ice cream, stray cats and turtles--to remove me from my studies, but nothing ever worked.
Later, in college, the pattern continued. The library and my college dorm replaced the unused kitchen at home. When spring came along friends would stop by my dorm or peer into my library room to persuade me to play Frisbee(飞盘) on the lawn. “No,” I would almost always say, “I have too much to do.”
My college study days were gone, but not my need and love for schedules. My friends and sisters tried to keep me away from my plans, but they were hardly ever successful.
This summer, though, while house sitting for my parents, I was persuaded to change my plans in the most unexpected way. The sight of tomatoes growing in my mother’s garden lured me out of my tightly scheduled world. They drew me with the power of a lover’s gaze. Hundreds of them were turning ripe and red by the minute, decorating the garden like decorations on a Christmas tree.
“If I have time, I'll make tomato sauce (番茄酱). “I told myself. But my long week in the house by myself was already filled with things to do: writing, and finishing a project that I brought home from the office.
Then, watching the fascinating tomatoes continuously falling to the ground in ever-greater numbers, again I mentally argued about all the things I had planned and needed to do.

"You should throw me in the bin, Mummy."
Those are the words my son say to me, words a mother should never hear their child say. When I asked him why, he told me that like his digger, he was broken and could not be fixed. My heart cracked a little more at that and I knew that, I had to try and find a way to bring back the joy into our world.
At age two, he was diagnosed with type two diabetes and he was "just losing his puppy fat". My son grew sicker and sicker until eventually, he was admitted into hospital.
Motherhood changed in that moment. I went from "Mummy" to nurse, always keeping a watch for signs he might be in danger from his own body. It can be hard to find the balance between the demands of being a full-time carer for a child with illness and being a mother. In those early days, it broke me to hear him beg and cry for me not to hurt him with needles again. The risks that come along are as big as they can be: blindness, organ failure, coma, death. His life is, and always will be, dependent on the monitoring and assessment of all these factors.
Yet, I had to find a way to raise him to know that he could live it fully and with all his dreams within reach. I had to learn how to live with these two roles, just as he had to learn to live with the demands his body would place on him.(重生之前的困难)What I had not expected was to find the way through in the mud and rubble(瓦砰) of a new-build social housing estate.(伏笔:母亲和儿子重活的关键)
My husband, son and I moved to the new estate in Cumbria when my son was four. The back garden was nothing more than a patch of newly sown grass, and a thin layer of topsoil. Underneath that was rubble and rock.(暗喻:表土上的花草代表希望,下方的碎石和岩石代表困难;在绝望中寻找希望。) The site was a former industrial stoneworks, and but to us, it was a place of hope.

Have you ever been so depressed that you can’t sleep? You also can’t eat. You can’t read. You have no friends to call up and nothing is good on TV. So you sigh, press your face down harder into your pillow, and shed a few tears.(冲突1:作者曾经的抑郁的境况)
This was my life two years ago. I had just turned 14 but already found life a struggle. As I lay in  my bed one Saturday, Mom peeked (瞄) into my room to make her regular “Is Emily still alive” check. I knew that if I spent more time like this, she would begin dusting me (dust 用得好! After suggesting a few things for me to do that I immediately rejected, Mom made her move, “Emily! Get dressed! I’m taking the dog out for a walk, and you’re coming with me!” “Why?” I protested.“Because it’ll make you feel better.”(伏笔:出去遛狗为什么会让作者感觉好?)
The thought of moving was unbearable. I felt as if all of my body parts were weighed down by tons of bricks(伏笔:作者抑郁之后动都懒得动---最后遛狗以后作者不再怕动,不再觉得压了喘不过气来,而是light heart. I couldn’t remember the last time I had gone outside. Somehow I found the strength to slip on a pair of jeans and a black sweatshirt. Mom was waiting at the door, leash (狗绳) in hand and dog at her side(独立主格结构).
Then, we stepped outside. It was a warm March day and it had been a long time since the warmth of the sun had touched my cheeks (伏笔:好久没有出来感受阳光触摸皮肤啦).Mom led the dog and me down some dirt paths, through a big field and reached Halsey Pond. But the signs of spring had yet to appear and the scene was rather colorless throughout the entire journey.
“I’m tired! It’s boring, Mom! When can we go home?” “Not yet,” she’d say. Mom stopped to say hi to every jogger, dog walker, runner, and bicyclist who passed us. Sometimes she would get into a conversation. They would talk about weather, dogs, and all small talk topics. She seemed happy, and was literally glowing After walking for what seemed an age, Mom finally said it was time to go back.

_____________________________
A new Saturday found me asking Mom if I could take the dog out._______
