◆Should Museum Entry Be Free?
With International Museum Day coming up, today we are asking readers: Should museums
be free or should people have to pay for a ticket? Let us know your view.
◆Comments:
Museums are not just for fun; they also help us learn a lot. That’s why
they should be free to enter. Running museums costs a lot of money,
Abbey Aged 15, USA
but the wealthy can help pay for it. It’s not fair if someone who loves
art can’t see it just because they can’t afford the ticket.
Free entry might not make people want to visit or learn to like art
more. Usually, people value things more if they are hard or expensive
Jerry Aged 14, France to get. Museums could ask people who visit often to pay, but give free
tickets to students who do well in school and can really appreciate the
art.
Museums teach people about their past. This is part of our shared

culture that should be available to everyone. Rich or poor people

should never be asked to pay an entrance fee.
There are no simple answers. Low ticket prices could help museums

museums with more money and other support. They have a social

The British are known for their sense of humour. However it is often difficult for foreigners to
understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.
Understatement means ________. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say,
“It’s a little damp (潮湿的) outside.” Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else
might say, “She isn’t exactly friendly.” Understatement is often used in an annoying situation or to make another
person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.
Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as
others. They often laugh about the silly things that happen to our everyday life when someone falls over in the
street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to play jokes on their
accents (口音), the way they dress and the way they behave. What’s more, the British love to watch comedies about
people who do not know how to behave in society. The famous Mr Bean is a good example of this kind of
humour.
Mr Bean is the role played by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990. Mr Bean doesn’t talk often, and instead
he uses his body movement and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr Bean so funny is

pressure (压力) of trying to get excellent grades while joining in various school activities could be great.
Sometimes it seemed like I lived at school! When I was at home, my time was spent doing homework. Some days I
was so busy finishing a project that I could hardly see my families.
I have a brother and a sister named Sally. She was nine years old. We used to see each other. But after I
graduated from the primary school she attended, I saw her less and less. I tried to go to her soccer games, but I had
my own play practices and meetings.
Then one day I came home, an empty house. I found a note from my mom. she was at my brother’s baseball
game. However, my sister was at her friend’s and would be dropped off.
At five o’clock, I went to turn on the light near the front door and saw my sister walking towards the door with
her friend and her friend’s father. I heard them talking.
“Is anyone at home?” the father asked.
“Just my mean elder sister—Linda and she only minds her own things. She’s probably in her room as usual,”

started to cry.
To make a long story short, a huge fight followed that ended with me driving my sister to her room. But I
realized what was worse than the fight was that I really hadn’t been a good elder sister. I had forgotten what was
important and what really mattered. I had got caught in a lot of pressure and competition. In fact, my sister made
me realize the grades I got didn’t matter to everyone—certainly not to her. All that matters to her is that I’m her
elder sister, and that’s what matters to me, too.

With the Internet, our friends are nearby even when they aren’t. Unluckily, while the Internet allows us to stay
close to our friends, it can also make us more helpless to our enemies.
Bullying (霸凌) has always been a problem in schools. Big kids pick on smaller kids; rich kids make fun of
poor kids. But nowadays kids are being bullied even at home, where they should be safe. Cyberbullying, which
means bullying people over the Internet is a serious and growing problem. And since the Internet is always on and
always available, victims (受害者) of cyberbullying can feel like nowhere is safe.
Cyberbullying often happens on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Bullies post cruel opinions on
第6页/共10页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司their victim’s pages or send them mocking (嘲讽的) or threatening (威胁的) messages. False news spread quickly
online, so it can be hard for victims to argue for themselves. Sometimes other people join in on the attacks. People
seem to be more willing to join in attacks online than they would be in person. In the end, victims can feel as if
their whole class or school has turned against them. It’s a very lonely and frightening feeling.
Studies show that over half of US school kids have experienced bullying online. Just one in ten of them will
tell his or her parents about it. And less than twenty percent of these incidents will be reported to the police.
Cyberbullying is very dangerous. Many students even killed themselves because of it. It is also largely
invisible—hard to identify or find out, and even harder to stop. Many countries have passed laws against
cyberbullying. However, we are not sure if these social rules will really stop this crime (犯罪) from happening
again.
37. Which statement below best expresses the main idea?
A. Cyberbullying is the leading crime in the US. B. There are many kinds of cyberbullying.
C. Cyberbullying is a new form of crime. D. The idea of cyberbullying is being changed.
38. Which of the following can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A. Cyberbullying doesn’t only take place on the Internet.
B. Policemen are working hard to stop cyberbullying.
C. There are a lot of victims that we don’t know about.
D. Cyberbullying is a problem unable to be seen.
39. Which of the following examples does not belong to cyberbullying?
A. Posting hurtful comments on someone’s social media posts.
B. Sharing embarrassing photos of a classmate on WeChat.
C. Spreading false information about a classmate online.
D. Making fun of someone’s appearance in person at school.
40. What might the passage talk about next?
