It was a cold afternoon in winter. My oldest son, Stephen, was at school, and Reed, my husband, at work. My
three little ones were sitting around the kitchen table. Tom was making a paper plane, while Sam was working on
an oil painting.
But Laura, our only daughter, sat quietly and was lost in her project. Every once in a while, she would ask how
to spell the name of someone in our family, and then carefully write the letters one by one. Next, she would add
flowers with small items. She finished off each with a sun in the upper right—hand corner. Holding them at eye
level, she let out a long sigh of satisfaction.
“What are you doing, Honey?” I asked. She looked quickly at her brother before looking back at me. “It’s a
surprise.” she said, covering up her work with her hands.
Next, she put her work into a box. When she had finished, she disappeared up the stairs. Later that evening, Inoticed a “mailbox” on the doors to each of our bedrooms. There were little notes saying that she loved all of us.
She hadn’t forgotten Sam or baby Paul. There were pages of colored scenes including flowers with happy faces.
“He can’t read yet,” she whispered (低声说), “But he can look at the pictures.” Each time I received one of my
little girl’s gifts, it brightened my heart. I was touched at how carefully she paid attention to what wrong happened
to us. When Stephen lost a baseball game, there was a letter telling him she thought he was the best ballplayer in
the whole world. After I had a hard day, there was a message thanking me for my efforts.
This same little girl is grown now, but some things about her have never changed. Yesterday I found a love
note next to my bedside. “Thanks for always being there for me, Mom,” it read, “I’m glad that we’re the best
friends.”
There are angels among us. I know I live with one.
26. What was Laura doing on the cold winter afternoon?
A. She was making a paper plane.
B. She was drawing some pictures.
C. She was working on her secret project.
D. She was reading her love notes.
27. How did the writer feel every time she received Laura’s gift?
A. Tired and sad. B. Happy and touched.
C. Thankful but worried. D. Surprised but upset.

A. Mom loves Laura more than any other child in the family.
B. Kindness and the expression of love can brighten our hearts.
C. Angels can be seen almost everywhere in our life.
.
D Notes and messages with love are a family routine.

A scientist goes to a forest to study monkeys. He or she wants to study their habits. But the first problem is:
how to know who’s who?
In the past, scientists had to make marks on each of the animals to tell them apart(分辨). But in the future,
they may have a much easier way, thanks to facial recognition technology(面部识别技术).
A research team from China’s Northwest University is using facial recognition technology to recognize
thousands of monkeys that live on Qinling Mountain in Shanxi province. It’s quite like human facial recognition
and it uses the facial features(特点) of the monkeys to create a database(数据库) that includes every monkey.
“When the system is fully developed in the future, we can connect it with cameras set up in the mountains. Thesystem will recognize the monkeys, name them and try to understand their behavior,” said Zhang He, a member of
the research team. “The recognition success rate is 94 percent.”
Compared with facial recognition technology for humans, facial recognition technology for monkeys is more
complicated (复杂的) because monkeys have faces with hairs. The color of their hair causes them to blend (融入)
into their environment. These factors make it harder for computers to do the job. Besides, monkeys do not work
with researchers in the same way humans do. It is difficult to take high-quality pictures and videos of them, which
are needed to improve the system.
29. To study monkeys in a forest, what is the first problem for the scientist?
A. How to tell them apart.
B. How to make marks on them.
C. How to understand their behavior.
D. How to use facial recognition technology.
30. What can we learn about the facial recognition system for monkeys?
A. It has already been fully developed.
B. It works like human facial recognition.
C. It has a much higher success rate.
D. It takes high-quality pictures of monkeys.
31. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. What facial recognition technology is like.
B. How the facial recognition system works.
C. What difficulties the researchers face.
D. How researchers will solve the problems.

Looking at the unfinished homework on his desk always makes David Grey feel uncomfortable. David often
leaves his homework behind and surfs the Internet or watches TV instead, waiting until the last minute. “But the
longer I wait,” says David, aged 15, “the more I worry.”
Everyone procrastinates (拖延) because they want to feel good now. The way to do that is not to do the task at
the moment. You can procrastinate on nearly anything, even enjoyable task such as planning a vacation. “Some people
procrastinate cleaning. Some people procrastinate by cleaning,” says Professor Peter Stone. Research has shown that
the top tasks young people procrastinate are studying and going to bed. “One big cause for procrastination is that
people are afraid of failure, of not meeting others’ expectations(期待),” Stone adds.
Some people believe that procrastination will make them thrive. But researchers disagree. “I did a study severalyears ago, asking procrastinators to finish a task in a certain period of time,” says Stone. “They did badly. They did
worse than non-procrastinators: they made more mistakes and they took longer. But they thought they did better.” No
matter what the cause is, procrastination is usually not going to be good for you. For example, bedtime procrastination
can lead to sleeplessness which in turn can cause many other health problems.
For those who need some drives to stop procrastinating, the best advice might be to take action first. If you’ve
been procrastinating on getting into a habit of exercise, just put on your walking shoes. A little bit of progress (进展)
will get you moving
Next, find something to help you remember to take action. If you want to go to bed at 10:30 pm, you might set
timed dimmer switch(调光开关) at l0 pm. When the lights are dimmer, you’ll start going to bed. It works for most
people.
Finally, reward (奖励) yourself every time you make progress. For example, after you’ve run 3 km, enjoy your
favorite ice-cream. But be careful: it won’t work the other way around.
32. What is the main reason for people’s procrastination?
A. They don’t want to do hard work.
B. They fear to lose and let others down.
C. They need to finish the top tasks first.
D. They plan to do the enjoyable tasks last.
33. The underlined word “thrive” in Paragraph 3 most probably means “________”.
A. work more successfully B. think faster
C. fail more easily D. worry too much
34. What can be the best title of this passage?
A. A Day of a Procrastinator. B. Procrastination:Yes or No?
C. Say Goodbye to Procrastination. D. Want to feel good now? Procrastinate.
35. What should David do if he wants to stop procrastinating on a writing task?
A. Put on some soft music to help think actively.
B. Switch off the light before he goes to bed at night.
C. Surf the Internet for fun before starting to write.
D. Enjoy his favorite ice-cream after writing for a while.

八、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题(共10分,每小题2分)
Beep! Beep! Barcode (条形码) makes it faster and easier to buy things in stores. This year, it is 50 years old!
On a Sunday afternoon in 1971, IBM engineer George Laurer thought of a code that could be printed on foodlabels(商标). Later it developed into the Universal Product Code, which was used by many grocery companies
starting in 1973, according to The New York Times. Before this, cashiers (收银员) had to ring up prices by hand.
Today, barcodes are scanned over 6 billion times every day and used by 2 million companies worldwide. What
information does a barcode hold? Where the product comes from, where it has been, its price... you name it. It can
also help stores keep track of(追踪) their products. For example, if there are 10 boxes of milk and a customer buys
one, it will be recorded so that the store owner knows there are nine boxes left. In the 1980s, libraries started using
barcodes to keep track of books in this way.
The next generation of barcodes, such as QRcodes, can hold more information. They can tell customers if
product has allergens (过敏原) or if it is organic (有机的). This provides customers with a greater level of trust in
the products they buy.
