BEddie was filled with excitement, because the mountain bike race was going to start and he had been training
hard for a long time. Perhaps, this year, he would finally win. The waiting people shouted encouragement, and
Eddie’s dad was among them, smiling proudly.
The starter said “Start” and Eddie got away quickly. The road was bumpy (高低不平的) with lots of sudden
turns, but Eddie was ready for them. As he went around the corner, he realized that his friend Riley was the only
rider in front of him.
Eddie tried harder and he reached Riley. Then suddenly he was in the lead. He was going to win!
Eddie could see the finish line at the top of the next hill. Some people were watching the race, they began to
cheer and Eddie heard his father’s voice supporting him.
Moments later, Eddie heard a cry. He looked around and saw Riley lying on the road with his bike on top of
him. Any minute now, the other riders would rush toward him over the hill.
Eddie jumped off his bike and ran to Riley. He looked over his friend carefully and made sure that he was
unhurt, then the boys quickly moved Riley’s bike off the road.
The other riders sped past to the finish line and Eddie heard a cheer go up for the winner.
Slowly, Eddie pushed his bike to the finish line. His eyes watered with disappointment (失望) .
Then, to his surprise, Eddie heard a sound and looked at the waiting people. He saw them cheering for him.
And there was his dad, with the proudest smile of all.
After the bike race, his father said to him, “Well done, my boy! You are the winner in my heart! You have won
people’s respect.”

Imagine That
People may think daydreaming is bad: If students don’t listen to the teachers carefully in class, they may have
trouble doing homework. If workers think about a football match during the meeting, they may have difficulty in
finishing the job. However, scientists who study the brain have learned many interesting things. In fact, far frombeing a waste of time, some scientists believe that daydreaming is a healthy and useful activity for all of our brains.
,
In order to study the brain scientists use special machines to check which parts of the brain are active at
certain times. When a person is daydreaming, the machine will show the activity in the brain called the default
mode (默认模式) of thinking. In the default mode, the top or outside part of the brain is very active. Actually,
several parts of the brain are working together in this mode. Some scientists say in this mode the brain
concentrates on itself but not the environment around the person. No wonder daydreamers usually can’t hear what
others have said. Usually, this happens when a person is doing easy work or boring jobs that don’t need much
attention like walking to school or cooking simple foods. People are more likely to daydream during such activities.
The importance of daydreaming lies in helping both think outside the box and deal with problems in social
life. When the mind is not working on the task at hand, then it is free to wander, just like a man walking slowly
around without any goal. Time of wandering allows the mind to think of something new and different. Some new
and interesting ideas or possible solutions (解决办法) to a problem may come to mind. For example, one may think
of solutions to problems in relationships (关系) with other people. In fact, most daydreams have something to do
with situations with others. Perhaps these are daydreams of memories of the past, or daydreams of what might be in
the future. In both situations daydreams help us improve the skills we can use to communicate with others.
As Marcus Raichle, a doctor who studies the brain from Washington University, explains, “When you don’t
use a muscle (肌肉), that muscle really isn’t doing much. But when your brain is doing nothing and daydreaming,
it’s really doing a lot.” During the so-called “rest mode”, the brain isn’t resting at all!
27. Some scientists believes that daydreaming is ________.
A. a helpful idea in school classes B. a way of avoiding work
C. a possible solution to a problem D. a healthy and useful activity
28. The words “concentrates on” in Paragraph 2 probably mean ________.
A. looks up B. pays attention to C. takes care of D. gets interested in
29. From the passage, we know that daydreaming ________.
A. stops the brain from thinking in the default mode B. happens when doing easy and interesting jobs
C. helps people develop social communicative abilities D. makes the brain do nothing and have a good rest
D
Something happens to many children when they are out of school over the summer months. It is called the
“summer slide.” This may sound like a ride at a water park. But it’s not. Summer slide is that the children can’t
remember much of what they learned during the latest school year. To fight against the effects(影响)of summer
slide, some parents send children to camp or find other activities to keep them learning. As the new school year
begins, most children are soon very busy with new classes and school-related activities. However, experts say keepingchildren busy all the time is not good for them.
.
What should parents do instead? Nothing
Lea Waters is a psychologist, who has been working on helping children succeed for over 20 years. Waters says
slowing down actually helps children become the best they can be. “It’s a little bit like, if you have too many programs
running on your computer, your computer starts to slow down. And when you close down those programs, your
computer runs faster. It’s very much like that for a child’s brain.” Machines need to be reset, while kids need to goof
off. “What I mean by goofing off is really allowing kids to have some downtime. They don’t need to do a specific
task. They can do something that they choose to do like shooting baskets, or doing a creative project, cooking. It’s a
project they’re interested in doing that they can do.”
She adds that goofing off does not mean the brain isn’t working. “It uses that time to make a kind of decision
about what information I should keep and put into my memory, what information I do not need and I give up. It’s
also an important network for helping us to remember better, to develop emotional intelligence(情商)and a sense
of identity…”
Lea Waters says she hopes parents will accept the fact that children don’t have to be busy all the time. Children
and adults need time to goof off now and then.
30. In the passage, summer slide means ________.
A. children take a ride at a water park during the summer holiday B. children forget what they learned before
going back to school
C. children keep doing exercise with parents when they’re free D. children reset their computers when they slow
down
31. Goofing off can help children ________.
A. make their computers fast B. learn the new classes slowly
C. improve their important abilities well D. communicate with their parents effectively
32. From the passage, we know that children should ________.
A. do nothing and don’t think anything during the vacationB. keep busy and learn new classes during the summer
vacation
C. do the projects or tasks they like best in their free timeD. do school activities at the beginning of the new
school year
33. The best title of the passage is ________ .

第II卷(非选择题)四、任务型阅读-多任务混合(本大题共1小题,共10.0分)
World Teachers' Day
Who do you want to thank most? Maybe your parents or other family members. But for some of the most
successful people in the world, their answer is teachers in their childhood.
Bill Gates thanked his high school maths teacher, Fred Wright, saying, "There wouldn't be a Microsoft without
him doing what he did." Fred asked him to push himself just a little bit harder. Maybe that's why Gates sometimes
slept under Fred's desk in the office instead of going home to relax after work.
For some children, teachers are the only positively influential people in their lives. Antwone Fisher, a best-
selling writer, grew up in foster homes. And he didn't have many adults that he could trust. But a primary school
teacher, Mrs Profitt, was the first adult he ever trusted. "She spoke to all of us the same way – with respect. No one
spoke to me that way before. I think that being with her for three years made all the difference," Fisher said.
There are thousands more stories like this, from famous people and ordinary people all across the world. That's
why UNESCO celebrates World Teachers' Day on October 5th every year. UNESCO wants us to remember that
education is a basic human right and every child should have free education. UNESCO hopes to train 69 million
new teachers by 2030 so that everyone can go to school, because, sadly, 264 million children in the world today are
not in school because there aren't enough teachers. Those children are often in places where life is already very
difficult.
So, if you have a teacher, you're one of the lucky ones. One day, you'll probably look back at your life, your
successes, the dreams you've made come true or the difficult things you've solved. The chances are high that you'll
find a teacher's words have helped you achieve these things. Perhaps you already know who that teacher will be.
Why not find them and say thank you on World Teachers' Day?
