Last week I wrote about how giving to others can and does lift your life and brings more
happiness, contentment, and even better health and a longer life.It must have 1 me to

donation.
As I walked out of the building,I felt so good and happy in the 4 of my heart and brain
that I 5 another school.I made a couple more 6 that day and felt like I was on top of the
7 .It’s very 8 that when I make donations,including all those $2 bills that I 9 give

It’s a lesson that I’ve returned to again and again throughout my writing career. To this
day,I 1 think of Miss Dennis whenever I write a 2 that creates in words the 3 I
want readers to see.
Take,for instance,this sentence:Miss Dennis always 4 a dark-colored,woolen
skirt,a tailored white blouse and a black sweater thrown over her 5 and held together by a
little pearl(珍珠) chain.Can you 6 her?I can.
But it was not Miss Dennis’ 7 that made her differ from others. What really made her
8 was her deep commitment to 9 each student’s creative thinking.“The 10 ofgood writing,” she told us over and over again,“is the writer’s ability to find his own 11
voice and then use it to tell an 12 story.”Most of us had never known we had a story to
tell, 13 a fun one.But soon the stories started 14 from some inner wellspring(源泉).
My usual 15 was to write like Colette on Monday, one of the Bronte sisters on
Wednesday, and Mark Twain on Friday.Miss Dennis 16 me not to do that any more 17
,“How will you find out what you have to say if you 18 trying to say what other people
have already said? It’s 19 that is important to good writing.” I’ve 20 these words
because they were then, and are now, important to me.
