7 all this time!”
You wonder,“Hmm...maybe I should 8 goals?” after thinking for a few
moments. It’s 9 to feel a sense of disappointment or 10 when this occurs, but I think

The 12 is that most people spend all of their time thinking about the treasure. The fastest
way to get to a particular spot, 13 ,is to set your compass and start walking. The idea here is
to commit to your goal with the strongest 14 .Develop a clear,single-minded 15 for
where you are.And then 16 all of your energy to the journey and be committed to the path you
are walking.
In other words, your goal becomes your compass, not your buried treasure. The goal is your
17 ,not your destination. The goal is a mission that you are on,a path that you 18 .That is
just fine and worthwhile, 19 comes from that path.It is the commitment to walking the path
that 20 .

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” When I was a kid,I 1 the
question.Adults always seemed terribly disappointed that I wasn’t 2 becoming something
grand or 3 ,like an astronaut.
Now,as an organizational psychologist,my job is to fix other people’s jobs,and I’ve
come to 4 that asking youngsters that question does them 5 .
My first complaint about the question is that it 6 kids to define themselves in terms of
work.If we define ourselves by our jobs, our 7 depends on what we achieve. So when you are
8 what you want to be,it’s not socially 9 to say,“A father”,or,“A mother”,let alone,“A person of integrity”.

live up to your childhood 14 .In one study, looking for a(n) 15 job left college seniors
feeling more anxious and less satisfied with the 16 .As Tim Urban writes, happiness is reality
minus expectations. It’s clear how expectations 17 our perceived happiness. If you are
looking for extreme happiness, you’re bound to be 18 .
Asking kids what they want to be leads them to 19 a career identity they might never
want to earn. 20 ,invite them to think about the different things they might want to do.
