I'm Emma Davis, an AI enthusiast who's been exploring this since finishing at MIT. I'm excited to share my passion for the incredible world of artificial intelligence, or AI. I'll kick things off with an awesome story from 2015 in Silicon Valley. Our project was called “Project Skylark” and with Dr. Jack Thompson, a Cornell University bird expert, we wanted to teach a machine to recognize different birds. It was amazing. “Avis”,the AI system, learnt to improve its accuracy over time. In six months, it could identify bird species better than human experts! This showed the incredible potential of AI! It's come a long way since the 1950s with Alan Turing's ideas. Modern systems can analyze data, spot patterns, and make decisions on their own. This power has opened up endless possibilities in areas like healthcare ,finance and transportation. One inspiring example comes from Dr. Alice Chen, who in 2018 led team at Stanford University to develop the computer program “MediScan” that analyzes images and detects early signs of diseases like cancer. MediScan's accuracy and speed massively surpassed human capabilities, saving thousands of lives. However, it has its challenges and risks. A 2020 report showed concern of AI taking over jobs and affecting economy. I love AI but there're tough conversations about balancing progress, job security, privacy and security as systems get better. Together, we can create a future where AI helps us achieve our wildest dreams. A If you’re seeking the path less frequented to test yourself, here are some experiences for you. Tribes like the Kalash people occupy landscapes of mountains and valleys, living a life largely unchanged for centuries.(Hindu Kush山脉横跨八个国家, 其中最引人注目的风景位于巴基斯坦北部。 根据“South America’s World’s End”部分第一段的“The southernmost tip of South America is also known as the “World’s End”.(南美洲的最南端也被称为‘世界的尽头’。)”以及“The best way to explore it is on horseback, traveling from one cattle ranch to another.(探索它的最佳方式是骑马,从一个 牧场到另一个牧场。)” 根据“Africa’s Eden”部分第二段的“It takes place once a year, starting from £19,290 per person, with the size limited to 12 participants in a group.(该活动每年举办一次,每人19290英镑起,一组人数 限制为12人。)” D。 B Mr. Riccardi was working for an Italian university at the time, 10 years ago, and had to go to the city of Potenza in the south of the country for a conference. He wanted to book an environmentally-friendly hotel, but it was not so easy to find one online and book. So it gave him the idea for a business — a website called Ecobnb, where people can search for sustainable accommodation. When someone finds a place that they would like to book, Ecobn b does not take the payment. Rather it contacts the property, which then emails the person directly. Ecobnb makes its money by charging the accommodation providers a monthly subscription to list on its website. Today Ecobnb, based in Trento, in northern Italy, lists more than 3,000 properties worldwide, from an organic farmhouse in Tuscany, to an eco-mountain cottage in Costa Rica. 2.8 million travellers now use Ecobnb per year, up from 780,000 in 2018. Mr. Riccardi says the number is still rising. Some accommodation providers offer discounts for guests arriving by bicycle, or those not using a car during the trip. “Holidaymakers are rethinking their relationship with planet Earth,” Mr. Riccardi says. “There is a new awareness, especially in young people, about our responsibility for our future and for the planet.” Statistics appearto back this up. A study has found that 69% of travellers are now actively seeking sustainable travel options. Although Ecobnb is focused on sustainability, how sustainable is it when many people might be flying to arrive at the accommodations it lists? “The impact of the travel of the flights is very big,” agrees Mr. Riccardi. “We are pushing the staycation (就近旅游) model a lot, inviting people to discover their own countries and to avoid the flights when it’s possible.” “More people are interested in green lifestyles every day,” he says. “And now they are looking for the same green choices also during their holidays. These little choices can come together, and we can change things and make something different. We can be the change we want to see in the world.” 24.What inspired Mr. Riccardi to start the website Ecobnb? A.His pursuit for a better future. B.His motivation to find a green hotel. C.His teaching experience in an university. D.His desire to invest in sustainable tourism. 25.What can we infer about Ecobnb from the third paragraph? A.It enjoys great popularity. B.It owns 3,000 properties in Italy. C.It offers discounts to all visitors. D.It charges payment from customers. 26.Why is Ecobnb pushing the stay cation model? A.To promote sustainable travel. B.To attract more young travelers. C.To reduce the accommodation list. D.To make flights available for others. 27.How does Mr. Riccardi feel about the future of green travel? A.Discouraged. B.Tolerant. C.Uncertain. D.Optimistic. 【答案】24.B 25.A 26.A 27.D 【导语】本文为记叙文,主要内容为Mr. Riccardi was working for an Italian university at the time, 10 years ago, and had to go to the city of Potenza in the south of the country for a conference. He wanted to book an environmentally- friendly hotel, but it was not so easy to find one online and book.(10年前,里卡尔迪当时在意大利的一所大学 工作,他必须去意大利南部的波坦察市参加一个会议。 根据第三段“Today Ecobnb, based in Trento, in northern Italy, lists more than 3,000 properties worldwide, from an organic farmhouse in Tuscany, to an eco-mountain cottage in Costa Rica. 2.8 million travellers now use Ecobnb per year, up from 780,000 in 2018. Mr. Riccardi says the number is still rising. Some accommodation providers offer discounts for guests arriving by bicycle, or those not using a car during the trip.(如 今,总部位于意大利北部特伦托的Ecobnb在全球范围内列出了3000多家酒店,从托斯卡纳的有机农舍到 哥斯达黎加的生态山间小屋,现在每年有280万游客使用Ecobnb,高于2018年的78万。 故选A。 26. 根据第五段“Although Ecobnb is focused on sustainability, how sustainable is it when many people might be flying to arrive at the accommodations it lists? “The impact of the travel of the flights is very big,” agrees Mr. Riccardi. “We are pushing the staycation (就近旅游) model a lot, inviting people to discover their own countries and to avoid the flights when it’s possible.”(尽管Ecobnb关注的是可持续性,但当许多人可能要坐飞 机到达它列出的住宿地点时,它的可持续性如何?“航班旅行的影响非常大,”里卡尔迪表示赞同。“我们 正在大力推广居家度假模式,邀请人们去探索自己的国家,在可能的情况下避开航班。”)”可知,Ecobnb 是希望以就近旅游的模式促进可持续旅行。故选A。 27. 根据最后一段“These little choices can come together, and we can change things and make something different. We can be the change we want to see in the world.(这些小小的选择可以汇集在一起,我们 可以改变一些事情,做出一些不同的事情。 D。 C Language gives us the power to describe countless actions, properties and relations that compose our experiences, real or imagined. As for how languages were created, scientists found iconicity might play a key role. People can’t bridge language gap and understand each other without iconicity. When playing a game of charades (猜字谜) , we act out our meaning, using our hands and bodies to describe the sizes and shapes of objects. The key to this process of forming new symbols is the use of iconicity. Not limited to gesturing, iconicity appears in our visual communication too. Traffic signs, food packaging, maps. . . wherever there are people communicating, you will find iconicity. According to our research, iconicity might also exist in our voices. We organized a contest in which we invited contestants to record a set of sounds to express different meanings. The winner of the contest wasdetermined by how well listeners could guess the intended meanings of the sounds based on a set of written options. Critically, the sounds that contestants submitted couldn’t include actual words or onomatopoeias (拟声词) . Listeners were remarkably good at interpreting the meanings of the sounds. Yet, all of the contestants and listeners were speakers of English. Thus, it was possible that listeners’ success relied on some cultural knowledge that they shared with the speakers. Did the listeners also understand the speakers from completely different cultural backgrounds? Later, an Internet survey translated into 25 different languages was carried out. Participants listened to each sound from the English speakers and guessed the meaning by choosing from six written words. Guessing accuracy for the different groups ranged from 74 percent for English speakers to 34 percent for Portuguese speakers. It is far from perfect, but well above the chance rate of eight percent expected by us. Taken together, these studies show that our capacity for iconic communication has played a critical role. Without this special talent, language would likely never have gotten off the ground. 28.Which of the following can explain “iconicity” ? A.A skill in foreign language learning. B.The process of acting out our meanings. C.The connection between form and meaning. D.A barrier between different language speakers. 29.What can we know about the contest? D.Listening skills vary in cultures. 31.What is the significance of the research? A.Clarifying the influence of sounds. B.Proving the necessity of exchanges. C.Uncovering the origin of languages. D.Identifying the function of gestures. 根据第二段“When playing a game of charades (猜字谜) , we act out our meaning, using our hands and bodies to describe the sizes and shapes of objects. The key to this process of forming new symbols is the use of iconicity. Not limited to gesturing, iconicity appears in our visual communication too. Traffic signs, food packaging, maps. . . wherever there are people communicating, you will find iconicity.(在玩猜字游戏时,我们用 手和身体来描述物体的大小和形状,来表达我们的意思。 根据第三段“We organized a contest in which we invited contestants to record a set of sounds to express different meanings. The winner of the contest was determined by how well listeners could guess the intended meanings of the sounds based on a set of written options.(我们组织了一个比赛,邀请参赛者录下一组 声音来表达不同的意思。 故选A。 34. 根据第四段“Listeners were remarkably good at interpreting the meanings of the sounds. Yet, all of the contestants and listeners were speakers of English. Thus, it was possible that listeners’ success relied on some cultural knowledge that they shared with the speakers. Did the listeners also understand the speakers from completely different cultural backgrounds?(听众非常善于解读声音的含义。 根据第一段“As for how languages were created, scientists found iconicity might play a key role.(至于语言是如何产生的,科学家们发现象似性可能起着关键作用)”以及最后一段“Taken together, these studies show that our capacity for iconic communication has played a critical role. Without this special talent, language would likely never have gotten off the ground.(综上所述,这些研究表明,我们进行标志性交流的能 力发挥了关键作用。 C。 D At any given moment, about seven microliters of tears are present in each of our eyes-about a tenth of a drop of water. Tears are more than salty water—they deliver oxygen and nutrients to our eyes, remove waste and serve as the first line of defense against disease. Research has shown that markers of many of the most common diseases like cancer are found in tears. Work is already under way to confirm the use of such markers for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease. Recently, a technologynamed TearExo has been developed for breast cancer screening using patients' tears. That could greatly reduce the costs of testing. Actually, the potential merits of tears as indicators of health go beyond occasional testing. One promising tear-based technology is a smart contact lens that continuously monitors a patient's biomarkers, significantly improving disease prevention and early detection. Recently, a smart contact lens has been successfully developed for continuous glucose monitoring and treatment of diabetic retinopathy. Such a product probably won't be ready for commercial use for several years. However, about 45 million people in the US already wear contact lenses to correct their vision, so switching to a smart version will be simple for them. Interestingly, NASA ever suggested using tear markers to monitor astronauts' health in space. This allowed us to better understand the effects on human health of long-term exposure to space environmental factors like weightlessness. Tear markers from experienced astronauts and new astronauts without space exposure could be used to establish a health database, which might be one of the first stepping stones toward making living in space a reality. Tears can provide an inexpensive, rapid and easy-to-use alternative to monitor health. Given the advantage in tear technology to monitor health, and to be used even by the healthy, such technology will almost certainly lead to the more effective prevention of diseases—rather than having to deal with the difficulties of treating them. 32.How does the author show the use of tears in testing? A.By listing data. B.By using remarks. C.By giving examples. D.By making comparisons. 33.What does the underlined word "merits" in paragraph 3 probably mean? A.Limitations. B.Amounts. C.Expenses. D.Advantages. 34.What can we know about the tear-based contact lens? A.It can hardly correct our vision. B.It helps to detect diseases continuously. C.It has been used commercially. D.It can successfully cure eye illnesses. 35.What does the author think of tear technology? A.It serves as a basis for space exposure. B.It can free astronauts of weightlessness. C.It monitors health effectively but slowly. D.It has a bright future in the medical field.【答案】32.C 33.D 34.B 35.D 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第二段“Research has shown that markers of many of the most common diseases like cancer are found in tears. 根据最后一段中“Given the advantage in tear technology to monitor health, and to be used even by the healthy, such technology will almost certainly lead to the more effective prevention of diseases—rather than having to deal with the difficulties of treating them.(考虑到眼泪技术在监测健康方面的优势,甚至被健康 人使用,这种技术几乎肯定会导致更有效的疾病预防,而不必处理治疗疾病的困难)”可推断,作者认为这 种眼泪科技在医疗领域的未来是光明的。 If your friends are happy, it turns out that you’re more likely to be happy too. If your friends are overweight, that too ups the likelihood that you’ll pack on pounds. 36The researchers analyzed the running activity of more than a million individuals worldwide who used an exercise tracking device for five years. They used weather patterns as a way to randomly examine different parts of that global network. On average, fine days would encourage people to run more, rainy or cold days less. Since different cities have different weather patterns, this natural experiment allowed them to ask: Did a rainy day in New York affect running in San Diego? If the weather in New York caused changes in the running behavior in San Diego, it could possibly happen through peer influences of the friends. 37 The behavior of one city’s runners could indeed affect the behavior of runners in another socially connected city. 38 Women tended to be influenced more by the female runners in their networks. And less active runners tended to influence more active runners to run more, but not so much the other way around. 39 “We have to start thinking about consumers and citizens as networked consumers and citizens. Since they are easily influenced by and influence their social network in very strong and dynamic ways, it will change the way a particular intervention succeeds or fails.” Sinan Aral, the leading researcher said. Or, let’s put it this way. Next time, the doctors recommend people to do more exercise. 40 A.There were a few more findings. B.That was exactly what the researchers saw. C.More difficulties remained to be worked out. D.They will tell the same to their friends and family, too. E.The result provides some practical guidance for professionals. F.Runners in one city would run as much as peers in another city. G.Now researchers have identified another similar quality: exercise. 36.根据上文“If your friends are happy, it turns out that you’re more likely to be happy too. Her heart sank as she saw the familiar low test scores. It felt like failing tests was common for her. Despite spending countless hours studying and trying her best, the scores never seemed to improve. With tears welling up in her eyes, she quickly put the paper into her bag, hoping to avoid being made fun of by her classmates. Just then, Ms. Zhang, her gentle and caring teacher, noticed her quietly drying the tears. Ms. Zhang’s eyes softened with concern as she walked over to Lin Ya’s desk. In a kind and encouraging voice, she asked Lin Ya to come to see her during lunchtime. Lin Ya felt a mix of curiosity and hope. She couldn’t wait for lunchtime to come. When the lunch bell finally rang, Lin Ya quickly packed her things and hurried to Ms. Zhang’s office. Ms. Zhang greeted her with a warm smile and let her sit next to her. She looked carefully at Lin Ya’s face, smiled warmly, and said, “Don’t worry. I know what’s on your mind. If you trust me, I believe we can work together to find a solution.” Lin Ya nodded, a light of hope shining in her eyes. Ms. Zhang then took out Lin Ya’s test paper and patiently explained each question to her. She pointed out the grammar mistakes and vocabulary problems that Lin Ya had made. After that, Ms. Zhang gave her some practical suggestions. Lin Ya listened attentively, taking notes carefully. Ms. Zhang added, “With three important qualities: diligence (勤勉), determination and strategies, you can make progress and achieve success. The first step is always the hardest, but if you keep going forward and don’t give up, you’ll be successful. She started by organizing her study schedule, dedicating specific hours each day to English practice. Every time she faced a challenge, Ms. Zhang’s words echoed in her mind: diligence, determination, and strategies. By the time the final exams drew close, she had revised her English book thoroughly and was well-prepared. The big day of the English exam finally arrived. Stepping into the classroom, Lin Ya’s heart raced. She took a deep breath, picked up her pencil and began to write down the answers one by one. By the end of the exam, Lin Ya felt a sense of accomplishment. Here came the result of the final exam. Lin Ya’s hands trembled as she unfolded the test paper.
