C.They process information slower. 20.What benefit can people get from the study? A.It may help increase the mental processing speed. B.It may improve people’s ability to concentrate. C.It may contribute to the research on diseases.【答案】17.A 18.C 19.B 20.C 【原文】M: Scientists in Germany have cast doubt on a previously believed assumption that the processing speed of our brain starts to decline from the age of 20. Until now, it has been thought that our level of understanding peaks when we are 20 and declines thereafter. Lead researcher doctor Mischa Von Krause, of Heidelberg University, offered hope to older people who worry about increasing forgetfulness or reduced brainpower. He said mental abilities were still powerful at the age of 60 and do not decrease before then. The study was based on data from over 1.1 million people, aged between 10 and 80 years old. The results showed that our mental processing speed remains relatively constant until the age of 60, but does start to decline from our seventh decade. The researchers said people’s mental processing speed actually increases in their 20s and remains high until 60. Dr. Von Krause said until older adulthood, the speed of information processing in the task they studied hardly changed. He added that older people do take longer to make decisions, but said this was because we become more cautious and responsible as we age. The study could cast light on diseases such as Alzheimer’s. A Libraries can give people knowledge, and visiting them can be an enjoyable experience. Below are some fine ones in the world. Mediatheque Sandro Penna — Perugia, Italy The building, which was finished in 2004 and showcases a space-age design, is the creation of Italo Rota, an architect in Milan. Its pink glass on the outside glows (发光) at night. Inside, there’s also a touch of color given by furniture in the children’s area. Sound insulation (隔音) helps create an environment perfect for reading and study. Admont Abbey Library — Admont, Austria Situated on the Enns River in southeast Austria, the library of Admont Abbey, constructed in 1776, is breathtaking in its beauty. Baroque architect Joseph Hueber was tasked with developing the design for the hall. This can be seen in its red, green and gold color as well as the dragon heads dotting the walls and the shapes formedby the ironwork. Meanwhile, this beauty is topped with a glass dome that allows natural light to fill the space, making it easy for visitors to read during the day. Wiblinglen Abbey Library — Ulm, Germany If you want to find a truly amazing library, a visit to Wiblinglen Abbey Library probably won’t disappoint. With a simple backpack and two hiking poles, Cammarota experienced a journey from Italy across Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkiye, Georgia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan to Kyrgyzstan. Inspired by Marco Polo, who travelled to China along the ancient Silk Road in 1275, Cammarota set off from the legendary explorer’s hometown of Venice to retrace the route on foot. “Marco Polo lived in China for 17 years and in his travelog, he provided detailed descriptions of the country, which allowed Westerners to learn about the charm of this Eastern nation for the first time,” Cammarota says. She adds that she hopes to see more of modern China by following in Marco Polo’s footsteps. As a hiker, Cammarota has paid special attention to road and bridge constructions, among which she was impressed by the Peljesac Bridge in Croatia, a project built by a union led by the China Road and Bridge Corporation. “When I see these buildings, I feel my heart swell with excitement. It’s only by witnessing them first- hand that you can truly grasp their incredible nature and can be shocked by their greatness,” she says. She began studying The Travels of Marco Polo in 2000 and planned to retrace Marco Polo’s route along the Silk Road. Her goal is to experience the profound cultural heritage (遗产) of Chinese civilization, witness the development and achievements of modern China, and most importantly, call for global harmony and inclusiveness by bringing into modern view the Silk Road history and spirit to boost dialogue and understanding between the East and the West. 24.What can we learn about Cammarota’s journey? A.It covered a long distance. B.The final stop of it is Kyrgyzstan.C.She arrived in China on April 26, 2022. D.She got support from many strangers during it. 25.What’s the main idea of paragraph 2? A.China’s appeal to Westerners. B.Marco Polo’s experience in China. C.The reasons and hope for Cammarota’s travel. D.The preparations Cammarota made for her travel. 26.How did Cammarota probably feel about the constructions in Croatia? A.Curious and grateful. B.Proud and satisfied. C.Excited and astonished. D.Relieved and confident. 27.What is the main goal of Cammarota’s journey? A.To enrich her life. B.To promote harmony in the world. C.To challenge herself physically. D.To learn more about the Silk Road. 根据文章第一段“Beginning in Venice on April 26, 2022, Italian hiker Vienna Cammarota arrived in China last month, the last stop of her journey to the East, travelling more than 20,000 kilometers.( 2022 年4月26日,意大利徒步旅行者Vienna Cammarota从威尼斯出发,上个月抵达中国,这是她东方之旅的最 后一站,行程超过2万公里)”可知,Vienna Cammarota的旅程超过2万公里,距离很长。故选A。 25. 根据文章第二段“Inspired by Marco Polo, who travelled to China along the ancient Silk Road in 1275, Cammarota set off from the legendary explorer’s hometown of Venice to retrace the route on foot. “Marco Polo lived in China for 17 years and in his travelog, he provided detailed descriptions of the country, which allowed Westerners to learn about the charm of this Eastern nation for the first time,” Cammarota says. She adds that she hopes to see more of modern China by following in Marco Polo’s footsteps.(受1275年沿古代丝绸之路前往中国 的马可・波罗的启发,Cammarota从这位传奇探险家的故乡威尼斯出发,徒步重走这条路线。 根据文章第三段““When I see these buildings, I feel my heart swell with excitement. It’s only by witnessing them first-hand that you can truly grasp their incredible nature and can be shocked by their greatness,” she says.(“当我看到这些建筑时,内心激动不已。只有亲眼目睹,你才能真正领会它们的非凡之 处,并为其伟大而震撼。”她说)”可知,她看到这些建筑时内心激动,并且为它们的伟大而震惊。故选 C。 27.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Her goal is to experience the profound cultural heritage (遗产) of Chinese civilization, witness the development and achievements of modern China, and most importantly, call for global harmony and inclusiveness by bringing into modern view the Silk Road history and spirit to boost dialogue and understanding between the East and the West.(她的目标是体验中华文明深厚的文化遗产,见证现代中国的 发展与成就,而最重要的是,以现代视角重现丝绸之路的历史与精神,促进东西方之间的对话与理解,倡 导全球和谐与包容)”可知,Cammarota此次旅行最重要的目标是倡导全球和谐与包容,促进东西方对话与 理解,也就是推动世界和谐。故选B。 C NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has revealed a planet, WASP-107b. The planet, which orbits a K-type star in under six days, has already caught the attention of astronomers and been considered an odd thing, for its size is about 1,316 times larger than that of Earth but its mass only about 30 times heavier, earning it the name of the “candyfloss” (棉花糖) planet. The latest observations give a strange world beyond our solar system. “Our understanding of other planets depends on what we know from our own planet,“ says Prof. Leen Decin, first author of the research. “That’s very restricted knowledge. But exploring space requires more.” The planet was discovered in 2017, after astronomers spotted light from its host star, each time the planet passed in front of it. “It’s like a fly in front of a street lamp,” says Decin. James Webb takes these observations to the next level by measuring starlight shining through the planet’s atmosphere. Because distinct elements absorb light of distinct wavelengths, the band of colored starlight indicates which gases are present. The latest observations of the “candyfloss” planet reveal evidence of gases like water vapor (水蒸气) in the atmosphere. It is also the first time that the chemical composition of clouds on another planet has been identified-in this case, a kind of special sand. The planet’s atmosphere would feature something similar to the Earth’s water cycle but involve sand cycling between solid and gaseous states. From the hotter, lower levels, with temperatures close to 1,000℃, some steam would rise up, cool and form grains of sand too small to see. Eventually, these cloudsof sand would become heavy enough and they would rain back. “The universe has so many surprises,” says Decin. “I do visualize various alternative ways for life to form on another planet. It might be very different from something you know here on Earth. We have to broaden our imagination.” 28.Why is WASP-107b thought strange? A.It has shining starlight. B.It orbits the parent star quickly. C.It is large but relatively light. D.It is in the shape of candyfloss. 29.What restricts people’s knowledge of other planets? The planet’s atmosphere would feature somethingsimilar to the Earth’s water cycle but involve sand cycling between solid and gaseous states. From the hotter, lower levels, with temperatures close to 1,000℃, some steam would rise up, cool and form grains of sand too small to see. Eventually, these clouds of sand would become heavy enough and they would rain back.(对这颗“棉花糖” 行星的最新观测揭示了大气中存在水蒸气等气体的证据。这也是第一次在另一颗行星上发现云的化学成分 ——在这种情况下,是一种特殊的沙子。这颗行星的大气特征与地球的水循环相似,但包括固体和气体状 态之间的沙循环。在温度接近1000℃的较热较低的地方,一些蒸汽会上升,冷却,形成小得看不见的沙粒。 最终,这些沙云会变得足够重,然后又会下雨)”可知,第4段主要讨论了WASP-107b的大气条件。故选 D。 31.推理判断题。根据最后一段““The universe has so many surprises,” says Decin. “I do visualize various alternative ways for life to form on another planet. It might be very different from something you know here on Earth. The rare books are part of a new Permanent exhibition, “Jane Austen and the Art of Writing”, at her family’s former cottage in Chawton, a village located some 50 miles from London. Austen lived in the house during the last eight years of her life. She wrote or revised all six of her completed novels there: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. For the first time, all six first-edition novels will be on display together at Jane Austen’s House, which is now a museum. They include a copy of Emma, copies of Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, and a copy of Sense and Sensibility with the publisher’s original binding. The novels appear on display in a 12-sided case built for the new installation, a tribute to Austen’s small 12- sided wooden table she often worked at. They deserve it. The rare books are part of the museum’s preparations for the beloved author’s 250th birthday celebrations in December 2025. Lizzie Dunford, director of the museum, is excited for visitors to have the unique opportunity to be quite literally surrounded by the books and objects that influenced Austen. The show also features other objects from Austen’s life that are connected to her writing. Additionally, some of Austen’s letters are on view at the exhibition, which examines how her correspondence and love of letter-writing informed her fiction. Visitors will also see a film about The Watsons, one of Austen’s unfinished novels, and howthe original manuscript (手稿) throws light on her writing process. “This exhibition is a deep dive into Jane Austen’s creative process,” says Sophie Reynolds, the head of collections, interpretation and engagement at the museum. “We hope that it will unlock a new way for our visitors to understand Jane Austen as a dedicated, driven and professional writer, and to explore how her life and living arrangements affected her writing in the very house in which she lived and wrote.” 32.What is the focus of the exhibition? In a 2016 study, researchers studied the relationship between perfectionism and depression over time. 37 Although people may believe that their perfectionism contributes to their success, it seems to be harmful to their mental health. Is perfectionism always harmful? 38 Some suggest the possibility of adaptive perfectionism, where people stick to high standards without self-criticism of their own mistakes. However, others believe that perfectionism is not adaptive and they don’t think it is beneficial. So what can perfectionists do to change their behavior? Psychologists point out that giving up on perfection does not necessarily mean less success. 39 A possible alternative to perfectionism is what psychologists call a growth mindset. Unlike those with a fixed mindset, those with a growth mindset believe that they can improvetheir abilities by learning from their mistakes. 40 To understand self-sympathy, think about how you would respond to a close friend if they made a mistake. It is likely that you will respond with kindness and understanding, knowing that your friend is doing it out of good intentions. A.Another is to cultivate sympathy for oneself. One evening, as the sun painted the sky with golden light, Adam was making his way home after a thrilling victory, his mind still recalling the cheers of the crowd. It was on this seemingly ordinary road that a tragic accident occurred, forever changing his life. A collision (碰撞), swift and unexpected, resulted in the loss of his legs below the knees. The world he had known seemed to collapse around him. Days turned into weeks, and Adam found himself trapped in a cocoon (茧) of despair. Frustrated by his initial inability to meet the requirements, he felt his daily training seemed like wasting time. Just when he was on the edge of giving up, a basketball coach of his school reached out to him. With kind words and a wealth of experience, the coach designed personalized training sessions for Adam. For a whole year, Adam pushed himself to the limit, growing stronger both physically and mentally. His determination and hard work slowly restored his confidence. Finally, Adam became a member of the basketball team with the help of his school basketball coach. He tightly hugged his basketball coach, expressing his gratitude to him. He acknowledged that without the coach’s patience and guidance, he might have given up sports altogether. In the basketball team, Adam found not justcomfort and friendship among his teammates, but also a sense of belonging.
