Dad is from a rural area about 230 kilometers north of the capital Manila, and where most people live off the
land, raising and selling livestock and poultry. His father, an artist and street magician, died when he was very
young. To make ends meet, his mother went about town and washed laundry in various households. My dad found
himself alone — lack of nurturing and love, short of family bonds.
Dad loved reading and always looked for opportunities to educate himself. One day, when my father was 16
and out of work, a pastor saw him sitting under a tree absorbed in a book. He approached Dad and asked him why
he wasn’t in school. Dad replied that he had no money for college. The pastor saw his desire to study and
recommended him to University of the Cordilleras as a working student. He also gave Dad a job at a local church.
Thanks to the pastor, Dad got his Bachelor of Arts degree, then went on to study law and became a successful
lawyer. He wrote a widely read textbook on Philippine law.
Looking at my father now, I can see how he was able to overcome so many obstacles. He is by nature a
hardworking man, pouring his energy into his career without forgetting his family. He values education — when we
were younger, he would tell me and my brother to constantly seek improvement in ourselves through learning.
Like a light, he shines with dignity and respect because of his achievements, but his light radiates the
brightest for maintaining our family as a cohesive unit with love and faith as its foundation.
There are times when my dad kids around and asks me, using my childhood nickname, “Sasi, where’s the
light?”
I just smile, and point at him.

Wind power is a very clean source of energy. This is how wind power works. Wind makes windmills spin(旋
转). When the windmills spin, they make electricity. Then we can use the electricity.
A lot of people think that wind power is new, but that’s not true. For thousands of years, people have used
wind to sail boats and move water. We still do those things today, but these days we mostly use wind power to
make electricity.
Wind power is a very popular source of energy. Most people think that we should use it more and more. First
of all, it’s clean. Windmills don’t pollute the environment at all. Second, we can use wind power forever. After all,
we will always have wind. Also, wind power is cheap, and it’s getting even cheaper.
A lot of people don’t understand wind power very well. They believe that there are problems with wind power,
but many of those problems are not real. For example, some people say that windmills are dangerous for birds.
They used to be true, but it isn’t true anymore. Old windmills killed birds because they spun very fast. New
windmills spin slowly, and they aren’t dangerous for birds.
However, there are real problems with windmills. One problem is that many people think windmills are very
ugly. This is a problem for people, because windmills are often in very pretty areas. Also, wind doesn’t blow all the
time, so we can’t use wind power all the time. Finally, windmills are noisy.
Wind power is becoming more and more common. Right now, more than 80 countries use wind power. About
2.5 percent of the world’s power comes from the wind. For some countries, that number is a lot higher. Wind power
gives Denmark more than 25 percent of its electricity.
46.Why DON’T new windmills kill birds? Because ________.
A.birds don’t fly near them B.they are shorter than old windmillsC.they spin slowly D.new windmills don’t spin
47.When did people start using wind power?
A.Over 1,000 years ago. B.About 500 years ago.
C.About 80 years ago. D.About 25 years ago.
48.________, so we CAN’T use wind power all the time.
A.We can’t use windmills at night
B.Windmills break all the time
C.Wind doesn’t blow all the time
D.Windmills are too expensive to use all the time
49.What does the passage say about wind power?
A.Most people don’t like it. B.Denmark doesn’t use it.
C.It’s getting more expensive. D.It’s getting cheaper.
50.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Dangerous Birds B.Popular and Clean Wind Power
C.Cheap and Clean Energy D.Expensive Windmills

“I can’t live without my mobile phone!” is what I often hear people say as they talk about how mobiles have
become an essential part of their lives.
The all so common sight of heads bent, eyes staring at mobile screens and fingers busy tapping away repeats
itself across major cities around the world. Whenever there is a moment to spare while on the train, taxi or waiting
in a queue, people busy themselves with their mobile phones.
Some people believe our unhealthy obsession with mobile phones is destroying how we appreciate the little
things in life or miss the moments that matter. The truth is that technology overall should be seen as a tool to
improve our lives.
Mobile phones have certainly had a great influence on our lives, but I truly believe it’s for the better.
It’s changed the way we communicate, whether for work or play. We are now less constrained (限制) by time
and geographical location. With my mobile phone, I can dial into conference calls while stuck in a traffic jam, or
reply to urgent e-mails while on the go. I can send a text message or share photos and videos with friends who
aren’t living in the same country. My phone calendar keeps my life organized, and even Facebook. Twitter, and
instant messaging are now accessible from mobile phones!
The mobile revolution isn’t just changing the lives of urbanite like myself. I know of a young Bangladeshi
woman named Shompa Akhter who is crazy about fashion and design. She dreamt about starting her own business
and she did just that, opening a shop in Kushtia featuring her own creations. Dealing with suppliers in different
towns was a problem for Shompa-purchase orders had to either be hand delivered or mailed out to suppliers.
Shompa also found it tough publicizing (宣传) her business to potential customers outside her town. But once she
learnt to operate the mobile phone, she was addicted. The 25-year-old businesswoman now stays in touch easily
with her suppliers. Mobile e-mail is a blessing in her life. Who would have thought that mobility could bring about
such enormous change? It shouldn’t really be a surprise though.

A.mobile phones make people communicate less
B.mobile phones make people’s life more enjoyable
C.people’s health is greatly affected by mobile phones
D.people become addicted to mobile phones in daily life
53.What’s the author’s attitude towards mobile phones?
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive. C.Critical. D.Uninterested.
54.Paragraph 5 is mainly about ____.
A.new functions of mobile phones B.new changes in Information Age
C.the advantages of mobile phones D.the author’s personal experiences
55.What do we know about Shompa from the passage?
A.She operates a food store.
B.She is addicted to Internet surfing.
C.Mobile e-mail is still unavailable to her.
D.Her mobile phone helped her business a lot.

My dad told me that when I was two years old, I said I was going to be the next Michael Jordan. My dad
took my wish seriously. One day when I was 3, he asked, “Do you want to be the next Michael Jordan and are you
willing to do any amount of workouts in order to achieve this — whether it’s windy or snowy?” I nodded.
Then he handed a piece of paper to me, and warned, “This will be one serious promise.” He gestured for me
to sign my signature on the paper. Unknown about what he had written on the paper, I sensed the seriousness of the
moment. The next early morning, my father pushed me to the driveway for playing basketball.
“First,” he instructed, “we will start with the art of dribbling (运球).” I looked at him, unsure if he was
serious, and threw the basketball with both hands back to him as he began to instruct me. I stood out in that
driveway for three hours that morning. Never had I felt more tired in my three years of life. Every time myattention began to wander, my father would harshly drag me back to the present.
I was beginning to repent of my decision to be the female version of Michael Jordan a little bit. In the
following mornings, my dad dragged me out to the driveway to continually coach me. Each time I wanted to give
up, he would take my signed piece of paper, telling me that I couldn’t take back my words then. By the age of ten,
after approximately 7,350 hours, my dad predicted my skill was better than my peers’ in the state.
My dad began telling me that being a world-class expert required 10,000 hours of practice. Then I had a new
goal. One tough day, when I was fourteen, at the end of our practice session, my dad said, “Congratulations!” That
evening, we had a party, with a basketball-shaped cake with the number10,000. During the party, my dad asked,
“So are you going to quit now?” I smiled, “Never! WNBA, here I come.”
56.What promise did the author make by putting her signature on the paper? (no more than 15 words)

59.What did the author’s dad congratulate her on? (no more than 8 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
60.What lesson do you learn from the author’s story? (no more than 20 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
56.To be the next Michael Jordan.
57.Because of receiving tough basketball training from her dad.
58.Regret.
59.Completing 10,000 hours of practice.
60.The story shows the importance of persistence and hard work.
One day when I was 3, he asked, “Do you want to be the next Michael Jordan
and are you willing to do any amount of workouts in order to achieve this — whether it’s windy or snowy?” I
To be the next Michael Jordan.57. 根据第三段中““First,” he instructed, “we will start with the art of dribbling (运球) .” I
looked at him, unsure if he was serious, and threw the basketball with both hands back to him as he began to
instruct me. I stood out in that driveway for three hours that morning. Never had I felt more tired in my three years

Because of receiving tough basketball training from her dad.
根据划线词后文“my decision to be the female version of Michael Jordan(成为女版的迈
Each time I wanted to give up, he would take my signed piece of paper, telling me that I
couldn’t take back my words then.(每次我想放弃的时候,他就会拿走我签过名的那张纸,告诉我说我不能收
Regret.
One tough day, when I was fourteen, at the end of our practice session, my
dad said, “Congratulations!” That evening, we had a party, with a basketball-shaped cake with the number10,000.
Completing 10,000 hours of practice.
The story shows the importance of persistence and hard work.
