In today’s digital environment, it’s refreshing to shop at an authentic street market. Here we’ve dug
deep to uncover some of the best ones. Chatuchak Weekend Market — Bangkok, Thailand
The Chatuchak Weekend Market is claimed to be the world’s largest weekend market, which makes
it hard to navigate for newcomers. As such, grab one of the free market maps from the information
booth. It will help you from getting lost! You’ll hear loud music from eclectic fashion stalls, smell
the scent of Thai street food cooking, and see groups of people moving about. Everything is pretty
cheap here, so don’t feel that you need to get down on price too much. Souks of Marrakech —
Marrakesh, Morocco
As the most famous group of street markets in the world, souks of Marrakech have over 3, 000 stallsand food vendors (摊贩) selling everything from multi-colored Moroccan carpets to spices, antiques
and tagines. Valuable goods such as gold and delicate handicrafts are located in the center of the
market, and the items become less expensive as you work your way out. It can be hot here, so the
best time to visit is in the morning or for a pleasant evening walk. La Boqueria — Barcelona,
Spain
If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in the typical Spanish city of Barcelona, the local market of
La Boqueria is a must. The grand iron entrance welcomes you to a foodie’s paradise of displays that
are impressive just to look at, let alone taste. Besides the fantastic local Spanish cuisine, you will find
a variety of foods from all around the world. Las Bóvedas — Cartagena, Colombia
Las Bóvedas is a great place to pick up souvenirs, including hand-woven bags, artwork and
hand-made Colombian hammocks. During operations, the area is buzzing (人声鼎沸) , and vendors
can be slightly pushy to get your attention and a sale. However, if you are after some traditional and
authentic Colombian merchandise, Las Bóvedas is the place to shop.

根据Chatuchak Weekend Market部分中“The Chatuchak Weekend Market is
claimed to be the world’s largest weekend market, which makes it hard to navigate for newcomers.
根据Souks of Marrakech部分中“It can be hot here, so the best time to visit is
in the morning or for a pleasant evening walk.(这里可能会很热,所以最好的游览时间是在早上
根据La Boqueria部分中“If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in the typical
Spanish city of Barcelona, the local market of La Boqueria is a must. The grand iron entrance
welcomes you to a foodie’s paradise of displays that are impressive just to look at, let alone taste.(如
说品尝了)”和Las Bóvedas部分中“Las Bóvedas is a great place to pick up souvenirs, including
hand-woven bags, artwork and hand-made Colombian hammocks.(Las Bóvedas是挑选纪念品的好
Las

Kaleb Benham was wandering around outside his home in Northern California. His 90-pound
pit bull (比特犬), Buddy, was playing around nearby, doing what dogs do: getting into trouble. Only
this time, Buddy was getting into a whole lot of trouble.
The sound that no one wants to hear alone in the woods caught Benham’s attention. It was the
deep roar of a black bear. Benham wheeled around to see the beast, which Benham figured weighed
around 350 pounds, some 100 feet away. In an instant, the bear latched on to (紧咬) Buddy’s head
and started dragging him away.
Benham, a lean, fit 24-year-old man, took off after them. He was interviewed on a television
program, and in the interview, he said, “The only thing I could think of was ‘save my baby’.”
Rushing, he lowered his shoulder and plowed into the bear. But it only tightened its grip on Buddy.
Benham grabbed the bear by the throat. Nothing. He tried prying open its mouth, but the jaw was
locked tight. Benham resorted to street fighting—hitting the bear over and over around its snout and
eye. It worked. The bear dropped the dog and ran off into the woods.
Buddy was in bad shape. His face was bloodied and ripped up. His ears were hanging. He had a
bite mark clear through his lip and one that barely missed an eye. “My first thought was that I was
going to lose him,” Benham said. He held up Buddy, put Buddy in his car and sped off to a nearby
veterinarian.
Buddy’s surgery took nearly four hours. This was the second time Benham had rescued Buddy.
The first was from a shelter a few years ago. “If it were your kid, what would you do?” he asked.
Nodding toward Buddy, he added, “That’s my kid.”4.What was Benham’s primary motivation during the bear attack?
A.To seek revenge on the bear. B.To protect his dog at all cost.
C.To prevent the bear from returning. D.To drive the bear away from his property.
5.What do the underlined words “plowed into” in paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Escaped quickly from. B.Drove a vehicle into.
C.Charged forcefully toward. D.Attacked with a sharp object upon.
6.Why did Benham refer to Buddy as “my kid”?
A.Buddy needed to be treated like a child.
B.Buddy was as important to him as his child.
C.He wanted to emphasize the need for vet care.
D.He was trying to lighten the mood in the interview.
7.Which would be the most suitable title for this passage?
A.The Bond Between a Man and His Dog.
B.How to Protect Your Pet From Harm.
C.The Life of a Pit Bull: Adventures in the Woods.
D.A Man’s Heroic Rescue of His Dog From a Bear Attack.
根据第三段中的“The only thing I could think of was ‘save my baby’(我唯一能
He lowered his shoulder and plowed into the bear. But it only
tightened its grip on Buddy.(他低下肩膀,plowed into熊。
根据文章最后一段“Nodding toward Buddy, he added, ‘That’s my kid.’(他朝
Americans spend more on lottery (彩票) tickets than movies, video games, and concerts
combined. Leading the way are the lowest-income households, which spend an estimated $412 each
year, four times the amount spent by the highest-income households. As financial writer Morgan
Housel describes in his 2022 book, The Psychology of Money, “without $400 for an emergency, low-
income lottery players are blowing their safety nets on something with a one-in-millions chance of
making a fortune. While a player may occasionally get lucky, the more they play over lotteries, the
likelier it is that their monetary losses will reach the intended average.”
So why do those living under the worst conditions spend so much more on them? The financial
knowledge might explain that this behavior is born purely of ignorance, but Housel and scientific
researchers point to alternative psychological explanations. They highlighted the inequalities present
in the U. S. and noted that low-income players may consider lotteries to be a “social equalizer”
which creates hope for material improvement and a higher social status that cannot be achieved
through conventional channels.
Is it really so ridiculous that a person laboring for 50 hours a week making $20 an hour would
spend $10 a week on lottery tickets to, at least for a moment, entertain the dream of becoming rich?
A millionaire choosing to spend a tenth of their savings on a speedboat is arguably making a worse
financial decision. The same could be said of an office worker making $100,000 a year spending
S200 each week to dine out wastefully.
As Housel points out in his book, the numerous ways we can spend our money, and even the
modern monetary system itself, have only been around for no more than decades. Our slow-to-adapt
thinking systems are not well-prepared for making solid financial decisions in a rapidly changing
world.
“We all do crazy things with money because we' re all relatively new to this game and what
looks crazy to you might make sense to me,” Housel wrote. “But no one is crazy. We all make
decisions based on our own unique experiences that seem to make sense to us in a given moment.”
8.What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?
A.Those who earn more spend more on lottery tickets.B.Americans like playing the lottery tickets best.
C.Low-income households can’t afford to spend money on lottery tickets.
D.Those who place expectations on lottery tickets may lose hope at last.
9.According to Housel, what accounts for the popularity of lottery tickets among low-income
players?
A.They want to fight against inequality.
B.They lack a sense of financial management.
C.They can have anticipation for better life.
D.They need entertainment to meet psychological demands.
10.Why are a millionaire and an office worker mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.To justify the consumption of lottery tickets.
B.To make a contrast between different spending patterns.
C.To emphasize the misuse of money in distinct areas.
D.To showcase their financial decisions on distributing money.
11.What’s Housel’s attitude towards the low-income lottery players?
A.Dismissive. B.Admiring. C.Critical. D.Tolerant.
【答案】8.D 9.C 10.A 11.D
Leading the way are the lowest-income households, which spend
an estimated $412 each year, four times the amount spent by the highest-income households. As
financial writer Morgan Housel describes in his 2022 book, The Psychology of Money, “without
$400 for an emergency, low-income lottery players are blowing their safety nets on something with a
one-in-millions chance of making a fortune. While a player may occasionally get lucky, the more
they play over lotteries, the likelier it is that their monetary losses will reach the intended average.”
They highlighted the inequalities present in the U.S. and noted
that low-income players may consider lotteries to be a ‘social equalizer’ which creates hope for
material improvement and a higher social status that cannot be achieved through conventional
channels.
Is it really so ridiculous that a person laboring for 50 hours a
week making 10 a week on lottery tickets to, at least for a moment, entertain the dream of becoming
rich? A millionaire choosing to spend a tenth of their savings on a speedboat is arguably making a
worse financial decision. The same could be said of an office worker making 200 each week to dine
故选A。
We all do crazy things with money because we're all
relatively new to this game and what looks crazy to you might make sense to me,” Housel wrote.
“But no one is crazy. We all make decisions based on our own unique experiences that seem to make
sense to us in a given moment.”
Despite decades of indoor smoking bans and restrictions which serve to protect non-smoking
people from exposure to second-hand smoke, a new research from Drexel University suggests that
third-hand smoke, the chemical residue ( 残留物) from cigarette smoke that attaches itself to
anything and anyone nearby, can make its way into the air and spread through buildings where noone is smoking.
Peter DeCarlo, an atmospheric chemist at Drexel, revealed the new exposure route for third-
hand smoke - through aerosol particles (气溶胶颗粒) which are common particles suspended in the
air - they come from various sources and are harmful to health. “In an empty classroom, where
smoking has not been allowed, we found that 29 percent of the entire indoor aerosol mass contained
third-hand smoke chemical species. This shocked us and raised many questions about how that much
third-hand smoke could continue to exist in a non-smoking room,” he says.
To investigate the cause of this surprising finding, DeCarlo and his coworkers first made
cigarette smoke flow into a Pyrex container, allowing the smoke chemicals to stay inside. Then they
made any residual smoke flow out of the container before pulling outdoor air through it to clear out
any second-hand smoke. After a day, purified outdoor air was passed through the container and the
researchers measured the chemical composition of the aerosol particles it acquired and compared it
to outdoor air that hadn’t passed through the container. They found a 13 percent increase in third-
hand smoke chemical species in the air that went through the Pyrex container, which meant that,
though it seemed as though the smoke had cleared, a chemical residue still existed and found a way
to attach itself to passing aerosol particles.
This means that the discovery was by no means unique to that classroom; in fact, it’s likely
quite a widespread phenomenon. “While most people expect that they’ ll be exposed to air pollution
from cars, or other chemicals in low concentrations when they’ re outside - they tend to think that
they’ re escaping all that when they step indoors,” DeCarlo says. “Understanding that we are
constantly exposed to these chemicals, even in our workplaces, is a challenge to communicate to the
public.”
12.What does the research show?
A.Third-hand smoke spreads widely. B.Smoking bans function well.
C.Smoke residue exists temporarily. D.Indoor smoking is strictly restricted.
13.Why was the discovery in the classroom surprising?
A.Smoking was permitted there.
B.New aerosol particles appeared there.
C.Chemical species there raised a debate.
D.Partial aerosol particles there carried smoke.14.How did the researchers carry out the study?
A.By observing chemicals in the lab. B.By comparing indoor and outdoor air.
C.By modeling third-hand smoke exposure. D.By measuring air quality in containers.
15.What does DeCarlo imply in the last paragraph?
A.People face new working challenges.
B.Their discovery is against expectations.
C.Smoke exposure raises widespread concerns.
D.Staying indoors frees people from air pollution.
【答案】12.A 13.D 14.C 15.B
Despite decades of indoor smoking bans and restrictions
which serve to protect non-smoking people from exposure to second-hand smoke, a new research
from Drexel University suggests that third-hand smoke, the chemical residue (残留物)from cigarette
smoke that attaches itself to anything and anyone nearby, can make its way into the air and spread

故选A。
In an empty classroom, where smoking has not been allowed,
we found that 29 percent of the entire indoor aerosol mass contained third-hand smoke chemical
species. This shocked us and raised many questions about how that much third-hand smoke could
continue to exist in a non-smoking room,” he says.
To investigate the cause of this surprising finding, DeCarlo and
his coworkers first made cigarette smoke flow into a Pyrex container, allowing the smoke chemicals
to stay inside. Then they made any residual smoke flow out of the container before pulling outdoor

This means that the discovery was by no means unique to

A man decided to adopt a pet dog from a shelter, believing it would be an ideal choice to
provide a second chance for a canine (犬的) companion. His heart was set on an abandoned golden
retriever (金毛寻回犬), and upon bringing the dog home, it quickly became an integral part of the
man’s household. The dog was not only obedient but also friendly, earning the affection of all family
members.
However, the man began to notice a troubling behavior of the dog. Despite having a gate
preventing the dog from entering the bedroom, every night, the dog would wait at the gate and watch
his owner sleep. Initially attributing it to the dog adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings, the man hopedthe behavior would cease over time. Yet, the dog persisted in this unusual vigil (守夜).
Concerned about the dog’s well-being, the owner took various steps to address the behavior. He
played with the dog extensively during the day, assuming that perhaps it wasn’t tired enough to sleep.
Even after these efforts, the dog continued its habit of watching the family sleep, prompting the
owner to seek professional advice.
Taking the dog to a veterinary clinic, the owner learned that the dog’s physical health was in
good condition. This left the man puzzled, as the mystery behind the dog’s sleep-watching habit
remained unsolved. Determined to understand the root cause, he returned to the animal shelter where
he had adopted the golden retriever, seeking insights from the staff.
To his astonishment, the shelter staff revealed a heartbreaking truth about the dog’s past. The
golden retriever had been abandoned by its previous owner when the owner’s wife became pregnant.
Faced with the perceived challenges of raising both a dog and a baby, the former owner decided to
leave the dog at the shelter. Struggling to part ways, he waited for the dog to fall asleep before
transporting it to the shelter, sparing himself the pain of seeing the dog’s face as he left.

When the dog woke up, he found himself in a totally foreign place. So scared was he that he kept
running around, looking for his owner, but in vain. A surge of despair swept over the poor dog. It had
never occurred to him that he would be abandoned. For a long time, he just sat there silently, staring
into the distance, in hopes that the owner would come back and take him away. Day after day, his
hope faded away. “It is likely that the painful experience leads to the dog’s lack of trust in humans,”
the staff in the shelter told the man.
Upon hearing this story, the current owner felt sad. Now he could fully understand the dog and
his strange behavior. “Perhaps I could do something to rebuild the dog’s trust in humans,” the man
thought to himself. On arriving home, the man removed the gate from his bedroom door, allowing
the dog to sleep in the same room. It wasn’t long before the dog built trust in his new owner. It was
the owner’s small act that brought love and warmth back to the dog again.
