环境描写的秘诀
在英语读后续写中,环境描写有时是不可或缺的元素,但必须牢记,环境描写并非无
缘无故。
在英语读后续写里,自然环境和背景衬托极为关键。比如描写暴风雨来临前,“Dark
clouds loomed large in the sky, like giant monsters ready to devour everything. The wind
The gentle breeze caressed her face, and the
warm sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground. The
lake in the distance was as calm as a mirror.”(微风轻拂着她的脸庞,温暖的阳光透过

“JAMIE EVANS.”
Oh no. Please tell me that Coach Cafferty did NOT just say my name. Not for the one-hundred-meter
breaststroke (蛙泳). Except all eyes were turned to me when she announced it, and her eyes met mine over the
clipboard (剪贴板) that held the list of events and swimmers for the Plain Township Aquatic Center meet. The
PTAC meet was the first of the season, and I was not ready.
“Remember, the meet is on Wednesday night. Be here at four-thirty for and the race kicks off at six. I’ll see
you at practice tomorrow.” Coach Cafferty added. The crowd cleared quickly and I headed back home, feeling
desperate.
“Did you find out your events for Wednesday?” Mom asked as she slid the pizza box across the table to
me.
“Yeah. One-hundred breaststroke,” I finally said, not meeting her eyes. “I don’t know why Coach didn’t
give me backstroke (仰泳). She knows it’s my best. I can’t swim breaststroke!”
“Maybe she sees something you don’t.” Mom said.
“Or maybe I should just quit the swim team.”
Mom frowned. “Is that what you want?”I sighed. “No.” I took a bite of my pizza. “I’m terrible at breaststroke. What happens when I show up on
Wednesday and race, and I sink to the bottom of the pool? Or even worse, come in last?”
“Someone has to be last.” Mom pointed out.
“But I don’t even know if I can swim breaststroke for one-hundred meters!” I set my pizza down. “She had
submitted the names, but there’s no way I can do this.”
“You could. But how will you know unless you try?” Mom persuaded.
“Yeah, but if I try, I could fail. In front of everyone.” I pictured the entire crowd watching as I finished last,
pointing and laughing. My belly squeezed.
Mom set her pizza down and gave me her I’m-saying-something-important-so-listen face. “Don’t worry
about other people. Just race against yourself. Forget about anything else except doing your best and swimming
your own race. Prove to yourself that you can do it.”
Somehow, there seemed a mysterious power in her words comforting my unsettling heart and I decided to
have a try. The next day, I was at practice as required.

Paragraph 1:The first practice was a disaster. I didn’t swim breaststroke for one-hundred meters and sank to the bottom
of the pool. I could feel people surrounding were all pointing and laughing. What a shame! Face blushing, I
was about to give up again when mom’s words resounded in my mind, “Don’t worry about other people. Just
race against yourself.” Calmness gradually seizing me, I continued to practise and gradually made progress in
the following practices. Finally, Wednesday came and I arrived at the pool hall nervously. Soon it was my turn
and to my surprise, I had a good beginning.
Paragraph 2:
Then everything crashed in the last 5 meters of the race. My legs were pillars of lead. I kicked, but it felt
like I was moving through cement. My arms were on fire, and my lungs were bursting. I slapped it with what
little energy I had left. There was no one else left in the pool. I had finished last. After the meet, Mom found
me, exhausted, collapsing in a chair. “I’m so proud of you,” she said. “I lost.” “Yeah.” She nodded. “But you
did it, right?” I bit my lip. “Yeah. I guess I did.” I didn’t come close to placing, but I had given everything I had
to finish. “I swam my race. And I think I won.” Race is not only to beat your competitors but also to race
against yourself.

A Great Monday
Monday started out great. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my math
test that day. I was confident that I would get a high mark. I left my house, and minutes later, I was sitting with
my friends on the school bus. We were busy talking about how we spent our weekend. At one stop, a boy
named Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped(绊倒) over someone’s foot and THUMP! He fell flat onto the floor.
Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily. Ryan picked himself up, dusted his jacket and
made his way to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment. The
rest of the morning flew by. I did well in my math test. It wasn’t long before the lunch bell rang. I met my
friends from the cheerleading team in the dining hall.
When we finished eating, we headed out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night’s
football game. After much practice, we finally managed to do the cheer perfectly. We decided to practice it
again one last time. Again, just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one
last toe touch. RIIPPP! I felt my jeans was torn down in the middle of my backside.
I froze(僵住了). I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing and I saw
them pointing at my broken jeans. Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears
began to well up in my eyes.

jacket and offered it to me, signaling to me to cover my torn jeans. Struggling against my tears, I did want to
express my gratitude to him but courage failed me. I left the courtyard in total silence.
That night, after the cheer at the football game, I found Ryan. I thanked him for giving me his jacket and
returned it to him. Gathering my courage, I sincerely apologized to him for my misconduct on the bus, and
thanked him for helping me out of an equally embarrassing situation. Ryan, with a broad smile, patted me on
the shoulder and told me to forget about it, joking he fell like that a lot. I admired his honesty and sense of
humor, and realized that he was someone I could be great friends with. Honestly, Monday was a great day

From Tiger to Goldfish
Josh is my 10-year- old grandson. I love him so much that I find it very difficult to refuse any one of his
requirements. Besides, he is good at persuading me. So, it’s really a big challenge to take him out sometimes.
But now, I consider myself to be quite courageous. Perhaps that’s why I recently decided to take him to a fair.
At the first ringtoss booth, Josh was absolutely certain that he could win that five foot-tall tiger because he
told me he was a real expert at tossing rings. They had such kind of game played at school and he practiced a
lot at school. He told me that he was often the winner of the ringtoss. The guy in the booth said, “You could buy
one ring for 50 cents, or three for $ 1. But if you wanted a real bargain, you could get 20 rings for $ 5.”
Of course, Josh said, “We should go for the bargain.” I thought about arguing with him by saying that an
expert ringtosser like him would need only one ring. But I knew this was not an argument I was going to win.
So I pulled out the $ 5 bill and placed it on the counter. Twenty rings later, he still didn’t have the tiger. “Butnow I see how to do this," Josh said. “Let’s buy another 20 rings, and I’ll get it this time.”
Well, he never did get the tiger, but there were plenty more places where we could spend our money. Josh
was equally unsuccessful at the next several booths. My wallet was getting thinner. And then we spotted the
booth that Josh positively could not miss: the goldfish booth, All you had to do was toss a ping- pong ball into
just one of the many fishbowls, and you could go home with your very own goldfish.

As we got down to the last ball, I was secretly relieved that the goldfish would be staying at the fair. As I
had expected, Josh missed every toss successfully. But wait! It was the last day of the fair, and the guy in the
booth didn’t want to take those fish home. So he was giving them away to anyone who played. “You’re a
winner!” he told Josh as he scooped a goldfish into a plastic bag filled with water and handed it over to Josh.
The look of pure happiness on Josh’s face made the entire fair experience one to treasure. No amount of
money can buy that joy. Josh decided that we could not spend another second at the fair. No, we had to rush
home to get the fish into a proper tank because living in a plastic bag was not a good experience for this darling
little creature, which he immediately named Goldie.

“David, it’s time for breakfast,” Mrs. Motangi called. “There’s a birthday present for you to open.”
David ran into the kitchen and saw a shiny new soccer ball on the table. He smiled and started jumping up
and down with excitement. “Can I take the ball to school with me, please?” asked David. “Of course,” Mrs.
Motangi said. “But you need to be careful with your first real soccer ball.”
At school, David immediately put his soccer ball under his desk. During the morning lessons, he kept
quietly tapping the ball with his foot to make sure it was still there. Finally, it was break time. David seized theball and quickly ran outside. He kicked the ball skillfully across the field to a group of students.
Soccer was David’s favorite sport. Since he had arrived in England and started school two months ago, he
had played soccer every day during the break. Break was always his favorite time because he didn’t have to
speak English, a language that was still fairly new to him. When he played soccer, he would forget that he felt
like an outsider at this new school
“Look!” called David. “I got a new soccer ball. We can use it for our game today.” The other students
exchanged glances and just stared at David. These were the most words David had ever spoken to them.
“We don’t need your ball,” said a tall boy, Jacob. “We already have one.” Jacob liked playing soccer but
poorly. Jacob kicked David’s ball with all his strength. The ball soared over the school’s high fence, bounced
once, and rolled to the back of a nearby house. “What a good kick!” screamed the other kids, jumping up and
down and slapping Jacob on the back. David watched in horror as his cherished football went out of sight, tears
coming to his eyes. What would his mother say?

Mr. Bleachers said with encouragement. David cast Jacob a smile, who immediately straightened up his
slumped shoulders. In the following days, it was David’s patient guidance that saw their strides in footballskills.
With the help of David, they got prepared for the soccer match between classes. With soaring confidence
