As a senior school graduate, during COVID-19 outbreak, I’ve had many concerns, the greatest one of which
was being unable to help my community, except for wearing my mask, following the health officials’ guidelines,
and assisting seniors to get their groceries.
Then it struck me. Solving COVID-19 relied only on individual steps and the goodwill of human
consciousness. But the next challenge we have to deal with ahead is climate change, known as the silent pandemic
without a vaccine (疫苗). So, all I could think of was: Why don’t we do the same, and deal with it through our
everyday activities?
I’ve created an App, EnRoute, to help reduce carbon emissions ( 排放) from shopping and transport
activities. Even though I’ve never coded (编码) before, my will was greater than any excuse I could think of . The
first version was just a one-screen App. Through the quarantines (隔离), I’ve had only 70 people to test the concept
with and created little impact. Plus, leading a social organization seemed like a small boat in a rough sea to me. But
instead of giving up, I chose to fill the gap.
And the coolest thing is that the more I was learning, the more people got interested in the idea. Through
every leadership program, I built a stronger EnRoute Community where each person was equally passionate and
brave to make a change. Their enthusiasm was my greatest fuel. At least I traveled across the world without a single
carbon emission.
Fast forward to today, through EnRoute, over 4,000 people reduced more than 150,000 kg carbon emissions.
The App turned into an international movement. And I even had the pleasure to be the first-ever Macedonian
Global Teen Leader+ Princess Diana Award Winner.
It turns out that except for being a good time to reflect and relax, bridge years can be a powerful tool to
change the world as well
24.How did the author feel during COVID-19?
A.Upset.
B.Alarmed.
C.Worried.
D.Ignorant.
25.What inspired the author to create the App, EnRoute?
A.Individual devotion to pandemic control.
B.Similarity between carbon emissions and COVID-19.
C.The author’s involvement in community service.
D.The influence of human activities on global warming.
26.What is the benefit of the App?
A.It unites many countries.
B.It gets many people to change.
C.It inspires the author to enjoy himself.
D.It proves the author’s ability to change others.
27.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Patient and selfless.
B.Able and outgoing.
C.Creative and generous.
D.Determined and responsible.

Born on her family’s farm in Ray, North Dakota, Mary Sherman Morgan had been helping her father with
farm work before she could attend the small-town schoolhouse. Being a few years behind didn’t hold her back and
she graduated from high school with honors. Aware of her intelligence, she ran away from Ray to attend Minot
State University as a chemistry major, where her skill was evident.
The outbreak of World War II led to a national shortage of chemists and scientists. In spite of the fact that she
was still a student and a woman, she was offered a job as a chemical analyst due to her talents, producing
explosives (爆炸物) for the wartime effort. She put her degree on hold and moved to Ohio, taking on the dangerous
job of analyzing unstable chemicals to produce weapons.
After the war ended there was a fall in demand for explosives, so she made a move to the field of
aeronautics, moving to California to work for NAA (North American Aviation). The only woman out of 900
engineers, she was soon promoted to a role which involved calculating the performance of rocket propellants (推进
剂) and designing special fuels to work with different engines. However, never having returned to complete her
degree, she was not afforded the rank or higher pay of an engineer, even though she had all the skills and
knowledge of one.
Her experience with propellants meant that when NAA was tasked to find a fuel capable of lifting the
redesigned Redstone missiles into space, Morgan was appointed technical lead on the project. National pride was
on the line, so Morgan set about investigating fuels. After countless trials, she finally designed her own mixture,
which was named Hydyne.
Hydyne tested well with the Redstone missiles and subsequently other aircraft (飞行器) , such as Jupiter-C
rockets, proving to be a quick solution to getting to space without a total rocket redesign. The fuel made the first
successful US satellite launch possible, even if Morgan silently slipped away from her success, retiring to focus on
her family and leaving her chemistry career behind.
28.What do we know about Mary?
A.She attended school while helping with farm work.
B.She was offered a job as a chemistry analyst after graduation.
C.She changed her working focus because her country’s demand changed.
D.She launched the first US satellite before retiring from her career.
29.What was Mary doing after the war ended?
A.Analyzing chemicals.
B.Producing explosives.
C.Mixing and saving fuels.
D.Designing and building aircraft.
30.What made Mary the technical lead on the project of NAA?
A.Her special knowledge in fuels.
B.Her rank as an engineer.
C.Her discovery of Hydyne.
D.Her sense of national pride
31.Which of the following words can describe Mary Sherman Morgan?
A.Caring and determined.
B.Intelligent and skillful.
C.Courageous but sensitive.
D.Accomplished but proud.

However much we learn from things going wrong, we will never become the best decision-makers. This
finding comes from a mathematical game that simulates ( 模拟) a large economy, and suggests we may need to
rethink assumptions built into economic theories. In such theories, people are typically represented as reasonable
agents who learn from past experiences to enhance their performance, eventually reaching a stable state in which
they know how to maximize their earnings.
To test whether economists are correct to assume that learning from the past can help people avoid chaos
rather than stability, Garnier-Brun and his colleagues invented a mathematical model for a game featuring hundreds
of simulated players. Each player can choose between two actions, like buying or selling a stock. They also interact
with each other.and the players’ decision-making is influenced by what they have done before — meaning they are
able to learn from experience.
In different game scenarios (设想), the researchers expected that the game would always result in chaos,
with players unable to learn how to optimize their performance. Economic theory would also suggest that, given the
right set of parameters (参数), the players would settle into a stable state where they had mastered the game — but
the researchers found this wasn’t really the case. The most likely outcome was a state that never settled.
Team member Jean-Philippe Bouchaud says that, in the absence of one centralized,god-like player who
could coordinate everyone, regular players could only learn how to reach “satisficing” states. That is a level that
satisfied minimum expectations but not much more.Players gained more than they would have done by playing at
random, so learning wasn’t useless, but they still gained less than they would have if past experience had allowed
them to truly optimize their performance.
Bouchaud says the game model is too simple to be immediately adopted for making real-world predictions,
but he sees the study as a challenge to economists to drop many assumptions that currently go into theorizing
processes, like merchants choosing suppliers or banks setting interest rates.
32.What effect of past experiences do economists suppose?
A.Better decisions and higher income.
B.A state of confusion and disorder.
C.Ignorance of future opportunities.
D.Decreased interactions between people.
33.Why did Garnier-Brun and his colleagues create a mathematical model?
A.To simulate a large economy.
B.To predict future economic trends.
C.To analyze interactions between players.D.To assess the assumption of economists.
34.The underlined word “satisficing” in Paragraph 5 most probably means______.
A.highly satisfying
B.constantly improving
C.minimally acceptable
D.completely unpredictable
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Reevaluating Economic Assumptions through a Game Model
B.A Mathematical Game Model for Simulating Large Economies
C.Challenges in Predicting Economic Stability through Games
D.The Importance of Learning from Experience in Economics

Turning the Page: Steps to Create a New Chapter in Your Life
Life is like a journey with ups and downs. What matters is the way you tackle each situation. 36
Here’s how you can create a new chapter in your life.
● Learn from others.
There is one common mistake that many of us make: when dealing with a problem or situation, we try to go
through all of it on our own. 37 When you start learning and depending on others, you notice the different
patterns which made them successful.
● Try everything in your hands.
Sometimes we might feel that we have tried out so much and still nothing is working out for us. I know that
situation as I have been there. I would say this one thing to you: giving up is easy, but continuing with the pain is
hard but worth it. The only workable solution that I would offer you is to think outside the box. Try solutions that
you never ever dreamed of. 38
● Let go of your past.
We must forgive ourselves so that we can easily begin the next chapter. We did our best in that time. It was
certainly the right thing to do but it didn’t work out and that wasn’t your fault. Forgive yourself and begin anew.
39 It is what makes us humans.
● 40
Most people get busy doing the things that don’t get them anywhere. In stressful situations, people even seek
unhealthy ways to relieve the stress. Remember to live in reality to make sensible and favorable choices for
yourself. Don’t follow the path to anger and destroy what is good for you. Picture your goals in your mind and
make sensible steps towards them with each passing day. Let nothing stand in your way.
A.Do what actually works.
B.Everyone makes mistakes.
C.Live in the present moment.
D.They might actually make things better for you.
E.It is essential for you to turn the page and create a new chapter.
F.However, humans are social beings and we have to interact with each other.
G.Whether it is a sweet love story or a serious life struggle, you must learn to move on.

The karez is a 2,000-year-old underground water system from Xinjiang, showcasing China’s brilliant ancient
engineering. This smart network of wells and tunnels 56 (bring) mountain water to deserts without
pumps or electricity, which helps turn dry land into green farms, proving Chinese farmers’ 57 (wise) in
fighting harsh nature.
The system is made up of three carefully engineered parts: vertical wells 58 (dig) for
maintenance, underground tunnels built with a precise 0.1% slope, and surface canals 59 (deliver) water
to farmlands. Believed to have originated during the Han Dynasty, the karez reflects early Chinese innovation. “It
demonstrates 60 our ancestors solved problems creatively,” notes Dr. Li from the Turpan Museum.
Today, around 400 karez systems remain in use, 61 (active) supporting 30% of Turpan’s famous grape
farms.
Unlike modern water systems, the karez operates in harmony 62 nature. “Relying on gravity
instead of power, it’s a model of sustainability,” explains farmer Ablimit. Impressed by its efficiency, UNESCO has
recognized its 63 (ecology) importance since its inclusion in the World Heritage Irrigation Structures list
in 2016.
More than just an engineering feat, the karez embodies Chinese philosophy. As visitor Wang Ying observes,
“While ancient civilizations focused on building monuments reaching for the sky, the Chinese created underground
networks designed 64 (support) life.”
Still inspiring modern water management, this ancient system proves sustainable solutions can stand 65
test of time and that ancient innovations still hold valuable lessons today.

Mason’s Souper Idea
Mason Martin was unenthusiastic on the subject of soup. He could take it or leave it. His mother, on the
other hand, loved soup. She made two different kinds every day of the week. Some days, it was chicken soup and
tomato soup steaming in big pots. Other days, it was beef stew and mushroom soup. The only thing Mason’s mom
loved as much as soup was ducks. The Martin house overflowed with duck decorations. Duck curtains hung from
every window. Duck doormats, duck dishware, and duck throw pillows filled the house.
When Mason was eight years old, his mother combined her two favorite things and opened a small restaurant
called Soup and Quackers. When it was cold outside, Mason didn’t mind some chicken soup or tomato soup, even
if his mother served it with a duck-shaped spoon into a duck-shaped bowl. But when she offered cold soup in the
summer, he politely refused.
Other than Mason’s dad, who loved everything Mason’s mom made, it seemed that the entire town felt the
way Mason did. In winter, customers young and old filled Soup and Quackers. The soup warmed their insides and
prepared them for the freezing outdoors. But when the steamy days of summer crept in, business dropped off
sharply.
Mason knew that one more bad summer would mean the end of the business. One boiling summer Sunday,
Mason sat with his friends at the ice-cream shop. They were trying to escape the fry-an-egg-on-the-sidewalk heat.
Mason absently moved his spoon in circles, watching his orange ice cream melt in the bottom of his bowl. How
could he help save his mother’s restaurant? He kept stirring as he thought — until suddenly, he opened his eyes
wide. “Oh, man, I’ve got it! I’ve got it! Ice-cream soup!” Cold, sweet, and perfect for beating the summer heat —
just what Mom’s restaurant needs!

1.续写词数应为150 左右;
