Passage 18: The School Sports Meeting

Our school’s annual sports meeting was held last Friday. The sun was shining, and the playground was filled with excitement. I participated in the 800-meter race, which was a big ________（挑战） for me because I’m not very good at running long distances.

Before the race, my classmates cheered for me and gave me confidence. The starting gun rang, and all the runners rushed forward. I ran as fast as I could, but after 400 meters, I felt tired and wanted to ________（放弃）. But when I heard my classmates shouting my name, I kept going.

In the last 100 meters, I pushed myself to run faster. I passed two runners and crossed the finish line in third place. Although I didn’t win the first prize, I was still very happy. My friends ran over to hug me and gave me a bottle of water. They said, “You did great—we’re proud of you.”
