895 words【Para. 1】At a time when artificial intelligence is rapidly expanding what we can do, young people are reminding us what actually matters.
【Para. 2】AI can now write, diagnose, create, and respond with remarkable fluency. Tasks that once took hours now take seconds. By many measures, AI is redefining intelligence. But it’s also raising a quieter question: If machines are getting better at thinking, what happens to the parts of being human that aren’t about thinking at all?
【Para. 3】Intelligence is more than cognition. Emotional intelligence (EQ) is our ability to perceive, navigate, understand, and manage emotions in both ourselves and others. It shapes how we build relationships, make decisions, and lead others. EQ skills such as empathy and active listening are strong predictors of long-term well-being and career success. Leaders with high EQ are more successful and lead more successful organizations.
【Para. 4】Research shows that compassionate leadership is linked to higher engagement, trust, and performance. And psychological safety, built through empathy, respect, and fostering inclusive communities, is the strongest predictor of high-performing teams. AI can process information, but it doesn’t sit with someone in uncertainty or navigate tension or body language. It doesn’t carry responsibility for another person. And that difference matters. AI can simulate empathy. It cannot experience it (as far as we know).

The World Economic Forum (2025) estimates that with the automation of many roles, some of the fastest-growing, in-demand workforce skills will be human ones. These skills include leadership and social influence, creative thinking and curiosity, motivation and self-awareness, empathy and active listening, people management, and a service orientation. At the same time, Gen Z is redefining what they want from work. Purpose, belonging, and values alignment are no longer secondary; they are central.

Skills like empathy, self-awareness, and active listening are becoming increasingly valuable precisely because they cannot be automated. And this is where kindness matters—not as a slogan or a soft ideal, but as a way of leading that shapes culture and relationships. Leading with kindness means putting empathy, purpose, compassion, and community at the center of decision-making. It means caring not only about outcomes, but about the experience people have along the way. The focus is on what we achieve and how we achieve it.
【Para. 9】I see this in the young people I work with every day. They choose connection over division. They create environments where people feel like they belong. They ask hard questions, listen across differences, and step into conversations that require empathy and courage. These kinds of leaders build teams where people feel valued and heard. They create environments where new ideas emerge, innovation thrives, collaboration deepens, and community becomes part of the culture, not an afterthought. This is what effective leadership requires. In an AI-shaped world, leadership becomes less about control and more about connection. Less about efficiency, and more about meaning.

Young people are looking for more than just “jobs.” They are looking for workplaces where they can belong, contribute, and lead with their values. They are building networks of connection. They are learning to bridge differences. They are leading now, not later. And they’re showing us what the future can look like.
