It is not easy to excite New Yorkers or keep them going easy on things around. This is one reason why actors
and other famous people move to the city. They can live quieter lives and escape the paparazzi photographers who
would follow them in Hollywood.
But New York has a new media star. And this star is not living so quietly. The star is a colorful Mandarin duck.
The bird first appeared this month in a small body of water in Manhattan’s Central Park. Large crowds have
gathered to see the duck. Reporters have been following its every move. The media attention on the duck has
earned the name “quackarazzi” – a word combination of paparazzi and the sound a duck makes!
The duck has chosen to live in a costly part of New York -- just off Fifth Avenue, near the historic Plaza Hotel.
There, hundreds of people turn up every day, hoping to see the bird show off its extremely colorful feathers. Many
people like the duck because its colors are like “sunsets,” says New Yorker Joe Amato. He comes to the park nearly
every day with his camera equipment. Bird lovers have been keeping record of the bird’s daily life through social
media postings and videos. People have noted how effortlessly the duck moves through the water.
This week, New York’s newest celebrity seemed to enjoy its fame, showing off its wings while members of
the “quackarazzi” pushed each other to get a closer look. Leesa Beckmann traveled over two hours from her home
in New Jersey to see the duck. She says her 90-year-old mother has been talking all about the duck since its first
微信公众号:【高中精品资料君】全网最全电子讲义以及最全网课,有需要的联系微信:xygewx002appearance.
“I’ve got to see this...duck,” Beckmann told her mother. She plans to take pictures and give them to her
mother.
Bird expert Paul Sweet heads a large collection of bird species at the New York-based American Museum of
Natural History. He says there is nothing special about a Mandarin duck in Central Park. Central Park Zoo has its
own Mandarin duck, he says. These ducks are often imported to the United States from Asia for use on private
property.
“A lot of non-birders tend to see (colorful) birds as more beautiful,” Sweet said, “But to me, it’s no more
beautiful than, say, a sparrow.”

Lichens(地衣) look like splashes of paint left behind by a careless painter. Unlike many plants, they do not
require soil to grow. They grow on trunk of trees in steaming tropical rain forests, on farmers’ fenceposts, on the
bricks of big-city buildings, and on old gravestones. Lichens can tolerate extremes of climate. They grow on rocks
in hot springs, on wind-swept mountaintops, and on stones in the driest deserts. In the Arctic, lichens are the
principal source of food for reindeer. Whole mountainsides in Antarctica appear green and orange because of the
presence of lichens; they are one of the few plants that can survive there. They are among the oldest of known
plants. Recently, scientists discovered lichen fossils on a rock in a mine in southwest China that date back 600
million years.
When conditions become harsh, lichens become dormant (休眠). If there is not enough moisture, they simply
dry up, but a short rain or even a heavy dew gives them new life. When growing on rock surfaces, lichens produce
acids that dissolve (溶解) the minerals, contributing to the process of weathering by which rocks are slowly turned
to soil. This property enables lichens to be pioneers. They appear on barren rock rubbed clean by glaciers, fires,
lava flows, or floods, beginning the process of soil formation that allows mosses (苔藓) and other plants to later
take root. But, despite their hardiness, lichens are extremely sensitive to airborne particles(颗粒). That’s why they
serve as an early warning system for air pollution.
It is the acids lichens produce that give them their distinctive colors. Lichens are often spoken of in the same
breath as mosses, and some lichens are even called mosses, but true mosses are all distinctively green, whereas
微信公众号:【高中精品资料君】全网最全电子讲义以及最全网课,有需要的联系微信:xygewx002lichens appear in many vivid colors. At one time, acids from lichens were used to make dyes, such as the purple
dye, the blue dye, and the red dye, and they are sometimes still used that way today. Some lichens, such as oakmoss,
contain oils that produce fragrant odors used in scented soaps, cosmetics and perfumes. Some lichens are also
known to have antibiotic properties to kill bacteria.
So definite are the form, color, and characteristics of these organisms that for hundreds of years lichens were
constantly under scientists’ microscope.
28.What characteristic of lichens is mainly talked about in paragraph 1?

If you live in Washington, D.C., or Redwood, Calif., you may have glimpsed a small, boxy robot rolling
along a local sidewalk, minding it’s own business, but attracting the attention of many a curious onlooker. The
autonomous machines were part of a pilot program last year by Starship Technologies focused on delivering meals
from local restaurants in dozens of cities around the world.
“Today, more than ever, people lead a busy and diverse life,” Lex Bayer, Starship’s CEO, said in a statement
online. “The hassle of needing to rearrange your life for a delivery will become a thing of the past. You don’t have
to switch your working from home day, reschedule meetings, visit a locker, drive to a post office or contact a
deliveryman all because of a missed delivery.”
The package delivery service is not available to everyone just yet. The company said it’s rolling out the
service in Milton Keynes, England. The wheeled robots have a top speed of 4 mph and can detect obstacles from as
far as 30 feet away. “The robot can operate through just about anything,” Nick Handrick, head of operations for
Starship’s D.C. office, told The Washington Post's Maura Judkis last year. “If you had something in the
way—a stick—it’s able to climb the edges of a road.”
By giving customers control of when deliveries occur, Starship Technologies is offering its service as a way to
battle package theft. In its announcement, the company cited statistics from a Wakefield Research Poll for Comcast
last year that found that 3 in 10 Americans who live in houses or townhouses have had packages stolen.
To sign up for the service, which costs a little more than $10 per month, customers need to download the
company's app. Customers then create a “Starship Delivery Address,” a unique address inside a Starship facility,
instead of a residence, where they can have packages sent from places such as Amazon.com. Once a package is
delivered to the Starship address, customers receive a text that allows them to schedule a home delivery via robot.

34.How does the package by a robot avoid being stolen?
A.The company shortens the delivery hour.
B.The package is delivered to the house directly.
C.Its delivery time is in the control of customers.

My students frequently ask me how I planned out my career to become president of Fidelity Investments. I
always tell them, “There was no grand plan; I backed into my career one step at a time.” In this tough economy and
ever-changing world, it is more important than ever to smartly evaluate each step in your career. To prepare for
微信公众号:【高中精品资料君】全网最全电子讲义以及最全网课,有需要的联系微信:xygewx002whatever surprises lie ahead, try to make choices today that will maximize your options in the future. 36
Gaining transferable (可转移的) knowledge begins with the choices you make at school. You want your
education to provide you with the necessary skills and expertise to succeed in a wide variety of jobs. 37 I
favor those that involve extensive writing, rigorous analysis, or quantitative skills.
Once you have finished your formal education, search for jobs that will allow you to further expand your
transferable knowledge—to help you find your next job. Let’s say you take a job putting together airplane leases.
Within a few years, you could become the world’s expert on the subject. 38 By contrast, if you take a job
that will expand your computer programming skills, you can greatly boost your options for later steps in your
career.
Remember gaining transferable knowledge is only one piece of the puzzle. 39 As a saying goes,
“Organizations don’t hire people. People hire people.” The more people you know, the more people will think of
you when a job pops open—even when it is not publicly advertised.
Of course, you can build your network to some degree without changing jobs. 40 But this sort of
event-driven networking pales in comparison with the deep bonds you can develop with your colleagues by
working, communicating, and traveling with them.
A.You can make yourself more attractive.
B.Gain transferable expertise and form close bonds with your colleagues.
C.Your next step should help you expand your web of personal relationships.
D.This later helped me evaluate and start business units throughout the world.
E.You can attend conferences or participate in committees at trade associations.
F.This means that you need to make smart choices about the courses you will follow.
G.However, this narrow expertise probably won’t help you in any other line of work.

67.Jack was a bright and curious child, always eager to learn new things and explore the mysterious world about
science. However, he often found himself in disagreement with his mother. His mother was always busy with her
work and she didn’t have enough time to learn about his interests and passions.
One day, Jack came home from school feeling particularly excited. He just found a sci-fi book about an
adventure on the moon. Upon arriving at home, he couldn’t tear himself away from the book. He read and read
until it was dark. Having finished reading it, he couldn’t wait to share it with his mother, only to be told that he
should focus on more practical subjects like math and history, which would help him get into a good college and
have a successful career.
Jack couldn’t understand why his mother didn’t see the value in what he was doing. He felt that she was
holding him back and not allowing him to pursue his true interests. “Why can’t you see how important this is to
me?” Jack asked his mother angrily. “I’m never going to be happy if I have to spend my life doing things that I
show no interest in just because they are practical or make you proud.”
