My Town—Newquay
My name is Alex. I live in Newquay. It’s a small town in the south of England. It has got
great beaches and is the best place to surf (冲浪) in the UK. There are lots of surf schools where
you can learn how to surf. I go surfing with my friends every weekend. My favourite place is
Fistral Beach.I love Newquay because there are lots of water sports to do like
surfing. If you like water sports, you can go kayaking, water-skiing
or coasteering. Coasteering is different because it is rock (岩石)

Hanghang is only seven years old. He comes from Beijing. He is very brave (勇敢的) and
clever. Hanghang woke up at four o’clock last Sunday morning. Suddenly he felt something
different. He looked around and found that the kitchen was on fire. His parents were still sleeping.
He went to wake them up as quickly as he could. Then he made a phone call to the fire station. At

Mind Maps
Mind maps are a great way of showing a picture of information that you need to learn. You
can use mind maps for all kinds of learning. They work very well for vocabulary (词汇) when you
are learning a new language. Here are the steps (步骤).
1. Draw a circle (圆圈) in the middle of the page and write the vocabulary subject in the middle.
2. Think about some word groups for “transport (交通)” and think of headings for each one. For
example:
sea transport
land transport
air transport
For each one, draw a short line ( 线 ) from the centre circle
outwards. Add (增加) another circle and write the new group
word in the middle.
3.Look at each group and try to add more groups. For
example, in “land transport” there are two sub-groups:

Draw two more lines, add two more circles and write the two
new headings inside them.
4. When you can’t make any new groups, add a line for each
word you know. Write the words along the lines or, if you have space, write them inside more circles.
5.As you learn new vocabulary, add it to the mind map.

Class Afloat (漂浮)Class Afloat is a Canadian school on a tall ship! It can take up to sixty students.
Not all the students are Canadians. They are from different countries. The classrooms are full
of things and comfortable (舒适的), and there’s even a library!
The teachers plan special lessons for each student. Because the school is a ship, you can do
some exciting classes, for example, Marine Biology (studying the animals and plants in the sea)
and History of Geography courses about the places you visit.
Students also learn all about sailing (航行)!
Students don’t just study. They must also clean, cook, and sail the ship. In their free time,
students can rest, read, or watch a movie.
Every sixteen to twenty days, the ship stops in a port (港口) for three to six days. In the port
there are lots of activities for the students to do—home stays, camping trips, museum tours,
cultural events, hiking, and so on. They also go boating and do other water sports. Parents can
meet up with the students in one port every term.
Students also take part in two volunteer projects in poor (贫穷的) places. They help people in
different ways. Students learn how to make other people’s lives better than before.
