Sara was looking out the window, and watching the strong wind blow the trees. She was upset, thinking about
the birthday party she could have if there was no hurricane (飓风). She didn’t understand why her parents had to
call off (取消) the party. They didn’t live near the ocean.
“Sweetie, you can’t sit there all day,” her mother said. “We’ll have your party next weekend. I have already
called everyone.”
“It’s not the same. My birthday is today, not next weekend.” Sara turned on the TV, but almost every station
was talking about the hurricane. “I can’t even watch my favorite shows. This hurricane is ruining (毁坏)

Her mother sat down next to her. “The hurricane is ruining a lot. Look at that. Those people are trying to save
their houses.” Sara looked at the images on TV. The storm did look bad. She knew she’d be really upset if her
family lost their home.
“What’s going to happen to all those people? Will they be okay?” Sara asked. “Usually when there’s a big
storm like this, people raise money and send food to the families who lost their homes. Some people even volunteer
to help rebuild houses.” “What can I do?” Sara asked. Suddenly not having her birthday party didn’t seem so bad.
“I want to help.”
“There’s a number to call to find out more about helping them. Would you like to call it with me?”

Research done by Common Sense Media looks at how teenagers in the US experience social media (社交媒
体) in their social lives. The study of more than 1,000 teenagers — aged 13 to 17 years old — shows that nine out
of ten teenagers have used some forms (形式) of social media, with Facebook being the most popular social
network. Over half of the teens in the study say that they visit social websites every day. However, what is
surprising is that only seven percent (百分比) of them say that it is their favourite way to communicate (交流) with
their friends.
Despite (无论) a love of technology and the wish to have the latest thing —including smartphones and iPads
— it seems that social media is not the most popular form of communication. The study shows that 49 percent of
teenagers are still happy to get away from the computers and talk to their friends in person.
But why do teenagers still like face-to-face communication better, when a digital (数码的) method can be
quicker? Nearly four out of ten teens think that talking in person is more fun than talking on the phone. Other
teenagers say that it is easier to understand what people really mean if you see them in person.
Interestingly, some teenagers think that there can be harmful results of using social media rather face-to-face
communication. A third of teenagers agree that using social media takes up (占据) time that they could spend with
their friends and nearly half say that social media is distracting (令人分心的) when they’re with other people. One
teenager says, “It’s really boring to talk to someone who has to check Facebook every five minutes.” When you
think about it, although today’s teenagers are always with technology and social media, it’s not surprising when a
quarter say they wish they could “unplug” themselves from the Internet and go back to a time when we didn’t have
Facebook.
Social media and mobile technology happen every day. It is too easy to be always checking messages, butface-to-face communication may still be the best way to talk to people.
29. What does the writer think is surprising in the first paragraph?
A. Social media is not very popular among teenagers.
B. Most teenagers like to use social media to communicate.
C. Facebook is the most popular site among teenagers.
D. So few teens enjoy communicating through social media.
30. What does the underlined phrase “in person” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. face to face B. on the Internet
C. in a group D. with the cellphone
31. What can we learn about social media from this passage?
A. It may bring harmful information.
B. It brings more fun to our talking with friends.
C. It makes it difficult for us to focus on our talking.
D. It makes our communication much easier and quicker.
32. Why does the writer write this passage?
A. To ask more teenagers to talk more on the Internet.
B. To tell why teenagers use social network every day.
C. To encourage teenagers to talk to their friends in person.
D. To report the results of a study on teens using social media.
六、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共 8 分,每小题 2 分)
Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some
friendships do not last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the
way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules—be honest, be
generous(慷慨的), and be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth,
people usually find it out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. Good
friends always believe in one another as they always speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing, and it makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give lunch money or your clothes.
Instead, you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, like your hobbies and your interests. Then, naturally you
will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is
important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know you better.
Sooner or later, everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school.Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. As a friend, listening can be a first step in helping solve the
problem. Besides, you must also try to put yourself in your friends’ place so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever the same, but all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep
your friends, you must be honest, generous, and understanding.
