Do you know why different animals or pests (害虫) have their special colors? Colors in them seem to be
used mainly to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts (蝗虫). But birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts
change their colors together with the change of the colors of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But
as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown color as crops have. Some other pests with differentcolors from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only
at night.
If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of coloring is protecting themselves. Bears, tigers and
other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be seen by hunters. This is because they have the colors
much like the trees.
Have you ever noticed an even stranger act? An octopus (章鱼) can send out a kind of very black liquid
when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over, the enemies cannot find it. And it immediately swims away.
So it has lived up to now though it isn’t strong at all.

Rivers are one of our most important natural resources(自然资源). Many of the world’s great cities are
located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through it that plays an important part in
the lives of its people.
Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the UnitedStates is the Mississippi. The lifeline(生命线)of Egypt is the Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great,
but it is also important for transportation. Ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the
Congo in Africa and the Mekong in southeast Asia. The greatest of all for navigation(航海), however, is the
Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation
for the people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes
build a dam(大坝)across a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to
irrigate(灌溉)their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries.
However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often make problems. As the cities grow in
size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with chemicals and other
materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to
enjoy the benefits(利益)of this natural resource.
1.The greatest river for navigation is ________.
A.the Amazon B.the Nile C.the Mekong D.the Mississippi
2.Which is WRONG?

D.Rivers play an important part in the lives of people.
3.From a dam, people can use the water for ________.
A.keeping the rivers clean B.only making electricity
C.washing clothes D.irrigation and making electricity
4.The water in the river is polluted because of ________.
A.people’s drinking water too much B.people’s swimming in the river too much
C.chemicals and other materials D.people’s building a dam across a river
5.The best title of the passage is ________.
A.Rivers in Cities B.The Importance of Rivers
C.Transportation D.Natural Resources

Victor’s projectAs part of my history project on transport, I did some short interviews
with people in my neighborhood. My first interview was with my friend Susan’s grandmother,
Mrs. Sanderson.
Question 1
How did you get to school when you were young?
I walked to school with my friends, except for Fridays when we had to carry all of our
things for school sports. Then we caught the bus. I enjoyed walking because we could chat on
the way. I didn’t like it when it was raining though, but Mum always made sure I wore my
raincoat and gumboots. On the other hand, I became a strong walker, and I believe that’s why
I’ve been healthy all my life.
Question 2
My parents drive me to school. Why didn’t you go to school by car?
You know, we were not rich enough at that time. We could not afford a car until after I
had finished school.
Question 3
How did you get around when you weren’t going to school?
We often went for a family trip by train. Most weekends we went on picnics and I loved
playing with my cousins in the park. The trip took much longer than it would take by car today
of course.

4.The best title of Victor’s finished project is probably ________.
A.The Life of Mrs. Sanderson B.How Travelling Has Changed

Sometimes people call ours a “throwaway society”. That means that we’re always throwing away old things
and buying new ones. Many times, you no longer need something, but someone else may just need to buy one. For
example, if your baby doesn’t like his toy car any longer, why not give it to a nearly family who has a little kid?
That’s one less plastic toy car that they need to buy. It’s also one less plastic toy needs to be produced, packaged
and shipped to the toy store.
Here are some other ways to help save resources (资源)for the society:
★Use the other side of the paper.
★Use rechargeable (可再充电的) batteries for your electric toys, MP3 players, cell phones, and cameras.
★ Choose reusable travel cups instead of disposable (一次性的) paper or plastic cups.
★Take your own cloth shopping bags when you go shopping.
★ Drink tap water instead of buying bottled water.
And there are some things you can exchange with your friends, for example, books, toys, even clothes. It's a
way for everyone to get something new without spending any money and without throwing many things away.
1.The underlined word “ours” in the passage refers to (指代) _______.
A.our society B.our old thingsC.our life D.our throwaway things
2.According to the writer, if we give a second - hand toy car to a neighbor kid, we can____.
A.buy another new one B.help toy business develop
C.make the family very thankful to us D.help save resources for the society

A.We should buy things that can be reused in our daily life.
B.We can exchange some things with others for further use.
C.It's good for us to throw away old things and buy new ones.
D.We are supposed to give the things we no longer need to our neighbors.
4.What should we do in our daily life after reading the passage?
A.Try to throw as few old things as we can.
B.Use as many disposable things as possible.
C.Drink bottled water even though there is tap water around.
D.Buy everything we need instead of exchanging them with others.
