Every year, two million tourists visit the beautiful islands near Australia. But, most of them only
stay for a day. The tourism officials wanted more people to stay longer. So, they decided to hire
someone to live on an island and write about their experiences. They put the job on their website
and waited for people to apply.
Ben Southall, a British who loved traveling, writing, and swimming, was one of the 35,000
applicants. The tourism officials interviewed 15 top applicants and the interview was not like any
other: it was four days of swimming, diving, and writing blogs about the experiences. In the end,
they chose the best person for the job: Ben Southall.
From his first day to his last, Southall explored the islands. He swam in the clear, blue water,
dived to see the coral reefs, visited local hotels, and ate at the best restaurants. Every day was full
of new experiences: jet skiing, staying in fancy resorts, diving, and then writing about it all. People
all over the world read his blogs. However, in his last week, he was stung by a poisonous jellyfish.
Thankfully, he got better quickly and was able to finish his job.
So, was this the perfect job? Yes, Southall says, but it was also hard work. He had to write about
all his adventures and post videos and photos every day. These posts attracted more people to the
island. Despite the hard work, Southall had a great time. He swam, dived, enjoyed his time, and
did his job well. In fact, he liked it so much that he decided to stay in Australia.

Smart Moves interviewed Linda about her unusual hobby. This is what Linda shared:
My hobby is live action role playing, or LARPing, which is like acting without an audience. The
game organizer sends us an outline of the story and information about our characters. Then we
meet to play out these characters. The aim is to really get into your characters and understand their
feelings.
I began LARPing when I was 19, influenced by my brother and his friends. LARPing is similar
to the games I used to play as a kid. The best part is getting into the character’s world. I can do

my character.

exciting. One person even said that he used to be shy, but LARPing helped him become more
