Every culture has set rules about how people should act. Patterns of good behavior, or manners, show respect
and care for others. Yet the details of 39 to express respect are so different.
Greeting people cheerfully is almost always considered polite. But it's more important in some cultures than
others. For example, when you enter a store in France, you should always greet the person working there. Other
cultures also 40 greeting people. But of course the greetings vary as people speak different languages.
When I was growing up in the United States, I once took part in a performance at my church. Afterwards,

I didn't do that well." My mother stopped me and told me that was very 41 . Later I learned that refusing a

Some of the biggest cultural differences have to do with 42 . In North America, it's polite to eat as
quietly as possible. That means chewing with your mouth closed and not slurping your soup. The same goes for
burping(打嗝). But in parts of Asia, slurping shows that you are enjoying your meal. And burping is a sign of being
4full and content.
There are also differences in how people eat across cultures. 43 , in North America and Europe people
use forks to bring food to their mouths. But in Thailand, a fork is only used to push food onto a spoon. In India and
the Middle East, people eat with their hands. But eating with the left hand is frowned upon. This is because the left
hand is considered unclean.
Yet there are also similar points across cultures. Saying "please" and "thank you" is almost always polite. If

Who wants to eat food that is thrown away as waste? Believe it or not, that’s exactly what world leaders did
at a lunch held by the United Nations in 2015.
During the meal, the world leaders enjoyed dishes like salads and burgers made with thrown-away vegetables
and fruits. Chef Dan Barber, who helped create the meal, hoped that the experience would make the leaders pay
more attention to the issue of food waste.
It is a huge problem. One out of nine people on Earth does not get enough food. Yet every year over one third
of the food produced worldwide goes to waste!
Why is so much food wasted? Firstly, food is often thrown away before it reaches customers because too much
of it is produced, or because it is not kept properly in farms. Secondly, shops and supermarkets usually throw away
unsold food. Finally, customers often buy more food than they need, so a lot of uneaten food is wasted.
How can you waste less food? When eating out, you may ask for less food and take home what is left. Visit
fast food restaurants less often, since they are usually more wasteful. Encourage your favorite restaurants to give
unsold food to food banks.
You can also waste less food at home. Use smaller rice bowls so that you serve less rice. Encourage family
members to use unfinished rice to make rice puddings. Tell family members to make a shopping list and buy only
what is on the list when shopping for food.
Food waste is a growing problem and we, either farmers or food sellers or customers, must take this problem
more seriously and do what we can to help.

They hang from trees. They float in rivers and oceans. They are piled up in landfills. As many as 3 billion
plastic bags are used every day in China. Our daily use of plastic products bas, for many years, been a leading cause
of serious environmental problems around the world. China has drawn up new guidelines, trying to bring plastic
pollution under control across the country in five years.
10According to the new guidelines, non-biodegradable plastic bags will disappear in big cities including Beijing
and Shanghai by the end of this year. Then the ban on some biodegradable plastic garbage will appear in these cities
two years later. And that rule will have been in all parts of our country by late 2025.
Luckily, China will not start from zero. Late last year, the country introduced a national standard for
biodegradable plastic shopping bags. Some places have gained valuable experience that others can learn from. For
example, Jilin Province is leading the way by providing shopping bags that are eco-friendly in some local
supermarkets.
Thinking of China’s consumer market, people know the biggest problems come from restaurants and online-
shopping platforms, such as Taobao and Jingdong. They are using a large number of plastic products. It’s reported
that nearly 25 billion plastic bags were used for deliveries in 2018. Most of them were hardly reused.
However, most Chinese people welcomed the government’s effort to cut the use of plastics. “Beijing is
thinking about the problem seriously,” said Tang Damin, a member of Greenpeace East Asia in Beijing. He added
thar the policy could be far more effective by using incentives such as a deposit return programme on plastic
products.
