Do you often drink bottled drinks? Of course 31 is so cool to get a cold one
right out of the fridge, right? But all those plastic bottles use a lot of oil and 32
the environment. Americans buy 33 bottled water than any other nation in the
world. In order to make all these bottles,17 million barrels(桶) of oil 34 up.
That’s enough oil to keep a million cars going for twelve months. Many people choose 35 the bottles away after having the bottled drinks.
In fact, instead of going out with the trash, plastic bottles can be turned into carpeting
for clothing. Remember this: recycling one plastic bottle 36 save enough energy
to power a 60-watt light bulb for six hours. 37 , for every six water bottles we use,
only one is recycled. The rest are sent as garbage(垃圾). Or, even worse, they end up
38 trash on the land or in rivers and oceans.
So why don’t more people drink water from the kitchen? Some people drink
bottled water 39 they think it is better for them, but that’s not true. The
chemicals(化学制品) in the bottles themselves may get into the water which can
do harm to people.
So next time when you have drinks or water, please 40 to use a glass at home

plastic bottles and send them for recycling.

Everyone knows by now that plastic pollution is a big problem for the
environment. Beijing, for example, has dealt with this by stopping using thin plastic
bags, plastic tableware(餐具) and other plastic products in supermarkets, restaurants
and hotels since May 1, 2020.But an even better solution might be on the way. Researchers at a French
company called Carbios have discovered a bacterial enzyme(细菌酶) that can break
down plastic. The enzyme, which was first found in compost(堆肥) leaves, can not
only break down plastic in hours, but also use the things left to create new products.
In fact, the first compost enzyme was found in 2012. Scientists changed its
genes(基因), allowing it to break down 90 percent of one ton of waste plastic in less
than 10 hours. It had been completely forgotten, but it turned out to be the best,” said
Professor Alain Marty, chief science officer at Carbios.
The new enzyme was discovered in research published in April, 2020. Before
that, the team, led by Professor Alain Marty, studied over 100,000 micro-
organisms(微生物) to find one that could break down plastic quickly.
The enzyme especially breaks down PET, a kind of plastic that is most
commonly used for plastic bottles and food packaging. It is also the fifth most
common kind of plastic that we use.
However, waste bottles must be ground up(磨碎) and heated before the new
enzyme is mixed in.These will make the recycled PET more expensive. But because
of a shortage of this recycled plastic, people still like paying more money for it.
Carbios said it is working together with companies like Pepsi
and Nestle—main users of plastic themselves—to develop their
research and start using the enzyme in the factories.“There is still
a lot of work to do to use it in the factories, but this opens the
door” said a research scientist.

If you think you are too shy and want to be a little outgoing, try the following. You
can make it.
Be open to others. Tell people you are shy. There is no need to hide it. When they
get to know that you are a shy kid, theyˈll understand you better. This also helps you
feel more comfortable in talks.
Try to smile more. When you smile, people think you are friendly and easy to
talk to. Remember that other people have feelings, too. Most people will stay away
from an angry face.
Talk to others first. If you find it hard to start a conversation, say something nice
about the people around you. Think about how great you feel when someone says
something nice to you. Doesnˈt it make you want to keep talking to those people?
Turn your attention to somewhere else. Think more about ways to enjoy parties
or the games. Donˈt worry about your looks or whether people like you or not. You
will become relaxed and find it isnˈt so hard to talk with others.
Encourage yourself. Each time when you say “hi” or smile at someone, say to
yourself “You did it!” Keep trying and one day you wonˈt be shy any more when
you talk to others.

It is believed in some ways that the daughter is the fatherˈs lover. But my
experience has taught me in a different way. For a long time my father has been a
very vague figure(模糊的形象) to me. He was a man of few words, tall but slim and
nothing else.
When I was in primary school, my father was never there to pick me up and he
never came to any of my parent-teacher meetings. He was always busy doing projects.
I remember when I was in middle school, my head was badly hurt in a P. E. class.
During my operation, my father was nowhere to be found. This hurt me most. At that
moment I considered my father as a cold-blooded man who did not care about me at
all.
But things seemed different at my high school graduation ceremony where I was
chosen to represent my class and give a speech. My father once again told me he had
a business trip in a place outside the city and would be unable to show up. "Donˈt
come. I will be very nervous if I see you," I told him.
I remember my speech went smoothly. After the ceremony was over and I was
about to leave, I suddenly noticed a familiar looking man sitting in a corner of the
hall. It was my father! I was so surprised that I rushed to him with tears running down
my face.
"Well done!" he said. His eyes were also filled with tears. Later I found out that
my father had managed to finish his work by staying up late and he drove for eight
hours to get back.
For much of my life, I described my father as a cold-blooded man who only
cared about his work. But when I thought deeply about this, it was obviously (明显
地) not true. At my graduation ceremony, I could feel my fatherˈs deep love. The factis that seeing is not believing and seeing may not be the fact if we donˈt perceive the
world with our hearts and minds. Thereˈs no doubt that life doesnˈt lack (缺乏) love,
but sometimes our eyes have trouble seeing it.
( ) 47.Which of the following is TRUE?
A. The writerˈs father was in the hospital during her operation.
B. The writerˈs father attended her high school graduation ceremony.
C. The writerˈs father sometimes picked her up when she was in primary school.
D. The writerˈs father went to parent-teacher meetings when she was in primary
school.
( ) 48.The writer rushed to her father with tears running down her face mainly
because ________.
A. she gave a speech successfully
B. the graduation ceremony was over
C. she was so nervous that she couldnˈt help crying
D. she was touched to find her father cared about her
( ) 49.The underlined word "perceive" in the last paragraph means "________".
A. receive B. feel C. refuse D. forget
( ) 50.Whatˈs the best title of the passage?
A. My Busy Father B. Life Is Full of Love
C. Seeing Is not Believing D. A Wonderful Speech
