In London, there has always been a main problem. In order to solve this problem, the government has
decided to have a bike revolution(革命). It has decided to provide 6,000 bikes for the people to rent. The
government encourages local people to ride bikes in order to solve the traffic problem.
More than 12,000 people have agreed to the idea. Some of them ask for more than one key. Although there are
not enough bikes, an official(官员) from the government said that they would find some ways to deal with such a
shortage.
Local people can get these bikes at special docking stations(停靠站). There are about 315 docking stations
across the city. About 12,450 keys have already been handed out to the local people, but only 6,000 keys can be
used now.
Let’s see the cost you need to pay. One key costs £3, and the cost of using the bike is £1 for an hour. The
cost per hour increases as the hours increase, so it will cost £50 if you rent the bike for 24 hours.

be lost. But they said they would try their best to solve all the problems to make sure the success of the program.

If you’ve ever stayed up late and then got up early the next day, you know what it’s like to not get enough
sleep. It’s a very uncomfortable feeling. In fact, scientists have long believed that sleep is like food — if we don’t
get enough, we might get sick or even die. But now they are starting to wonder how much sleep we need.
Researchers from London recently did a study on fruit flies(果蝇). They found that flies that slept for very
英语 第4页(共9页)short periods of time- about 72 minutes a day- still lived about as long as flies that slept for normal amounts of
time. One of the flies slept for just 4 minutes each day. This has led the researchers to wonder if sleep is less
necessary than we thought before.
Humans are very different from fruit flies. Sleep is when our bodies do a lot of maintenance, for example,
repairing tissue(组织)and growing muscle. Sleeping allows our bodies to recover from the stress we experience
each day.
But can we really die from not sleeping? No human has died so far from staying awake for too long. The
world record for sleeplessness was held by Randy Gardner from the US, who stayed awake for 11 days and 25
minutes in 1964. However, Gardner did experience serious side effects(副作用).
Scientists have not yet found any animals that don’t sleep at all. Even animals that only sleep for short periods
are not completely sleepless. This suggests that a short sleep is necessary, even in short-sleeping animals, according
to a German scientist.

In your spare time, do you help your parents with chores(杂活) around the house? Can you cook for
your family?
In order to stress(强调)the importance of hard-working spirit education among students of different ages,
the Communist Party of China Central Committee(中共中央)recently released (发布)a guideline(指导纲
要).
The guideline calls for students to respect labor work. Students should learn basic life skills and form good
working habits through such education.
英语 第5页(共9页)The government has been trying to stress the importance of hard-working spirit education. But this has been
overlooked(忽视)in recent years. Many teenagers do not value the importance of working hard and aren’t
interested in doing so.
According to a study of nearly 3,000 students that was done by Ningbo Evening News in March, only 22% of
students help with everyday chores around the house.
Schools and families play an important role in teaching students about the value of working hard, the guideline
says.
Primary and middle schools should provide students with hard-working spirit classes every week, according to
the guideline. Schools can also hold activities to give students real-world work experience. For example, schools
can teach children how to plant trees on Tree-Planting Day.
As children’s first teachers, parents should also encourage children to learn how to do chores at home.
Students should master one or two life skills every year. These skills can include cooking, washing their own
clothes and tidying their rooms.

Mobile phones have become an important part of our daily lives. However, to protect students'
eyesight, make sure they focus on their studies, primary and middle schools will have more specific
rules to limit students' mobile phone use on campus.
The Ministry of Education gave a notice that limits primary and middle school students’ carrying
mobile phone use at school in January, 2021. Those who still require their phone for some reason must
get their parents' and teachers' permission and must hand their phones over during class time.
The purpose of this new rule is to help students focus on study and prevent them from being
addicted (成瘾) to the internet and games. According to a 2020 report by the China Internet Network
Information Center, China had 175 million internet users under the age of 18 in 2019, with 74 percent
having their own mobile devices.
This is worrying, because long-time use of mobile phones harms children’s eyesight, cervical (颈
部) vertebrae (脊椎) and even the brain, according to the World Health Organization. Many schools
have taken measures to limit students phone use on campus.
Before the new rule , Li Wen, an English teacher in Shantou, noticed that many students brought
their phones to school. Some even played games on them during class. Now the situation has
improved since the notice was given.
