My First Marathon(马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles (脚踝) was injured and this meant not running for two
weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I decided to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher asked us to run laps and then hit a
softball. I didn’t do 13 . He later told me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” 14 me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running
was a battle against myself, not about competition or if I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own
body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my 15 , I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating (出汗) and
nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So I 16 to readjust (再调整). Not
the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course
walking a bit and then 17 again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I got mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never 18 the alarm clock
sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the 19 runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the
one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗标签), I can now call myself a
“marathon 20 ”.
英语 第2页(共9页)13.A.happily B.quietly C.excitedly D.well

Every year, runners all over the world challenge themselves in marathons-long running events that go on for
tens of kilometers. On October 12, Eliud Kipchoge ran a record-breaking marathon.
He finished a 42. 2-kilometer-long marathon in just 1 hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds. The Olympic
champion from Kenya became the first person to run a marathon of this length in less than two hours.
“I can tell people that no human is limited. I expect more people all over the world to run under two hours
after today,” Kipchoge said.
Apart from Kipchoge’s hard work, a few science and technology tricks(技巧)also helped him make history.
Hills and turns slow runners down. Kipchoge’s team picked a way in Vienna for its gentle curves(弯曲处).
The city’s cool and dry weather also helped keep Kipchoge’s body running better, according to Wired magazine.
A special pair of shoes also played a big part. The shoes can take in a runner’s energy when his feet meet the
ground. Then they returned part of the energy to the runner, which helped Kipchoge run faster.
Kipchoge had a dream team of pacers(配速员) as well. Five runners formed a V-shape ahead of Kipchoge,
which made drag(空气阻力) smaller. Two runners followed directly behind to push him forward. The 41-member
team took turns in running every 5 kilometers. Kipchoge stayed under a two-hour pace for almost the whole race. A
pace car drove in front of everyone and helped the team keep the right pace.
“Few world records today are technology-free,” The Telegraph said.

Trying to find the most suitable present is about as easy as trying to read someone’s mind. Few people will
actually tell you what they want for a special occasion and most of the time your loved ones will insist that they
don’t need or want anything! So, what to do? Here are some tips that could help.
Start Early
Starting your shopping early can have many advantages. For example, it gives you enough time to come up
with ideas for what you should buy for your friends or family members. Moreover, the closer it gets to holidays, the
higher the prices go up. So, save your money by being an early bird.
Make a List
Here, you can write down everything your friends or family members love. This can be food, hobbies,
experiences, and more. Then try to decide how to use this information to find a gift that suits them very well. If you
are lucky, you should be able to find good ideas in one of these lists.
Think outside the Box
Often, the reason why you get stuck (卡住) for gift ideas is that you only focus on the same kind of presents. If
you are still coming up empty, it is time to get creative. You can find something your friends or family members can
use every day. When in doubt, you can simply put smaller presents together to make up a larger, more meaningful
gift.
Gift an Experience
If you are still feeling a little stuck, go ahead and find something that the two of you can do together. It may be
a class, or anything else where you can enjoy each other’s company(陪伴). In short, you will be able to give them
the gift of friendship.

A reader wrote in a letter to say that she was feeling lonely at break because her best friend wasn’t around.
Here’s our advice to her—and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.
It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around—maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class.
You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends, but how do you make them? Maybe it
seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends. Start by
looking around your classroom. Think about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hi
to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer to share something or express your appreciation(欣赏)to them. Invite
someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to
kids you want to play with, act friendly, and say “Hi, can I play, too?” or just join in.
If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers
are usually pretty good at matching up(搭配)friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be
friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help—and pretty soon, you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t
have before she left: You can introduce her to your new friends!
27.According to the writer, some kids feel lonely at break because they___________
A.have trouble with their studies.
B.don’t have their best friends around.
