Once upon a time there was a happy paper doll that had no face. His whole body was perfectly cut out
and painted, except for his face. However, he had a pencil so he could choose whatever face he wanted tohave. How lucky! He then spent all day asking everyone he met, “What’s a perfect face like?”
“One with a big beak (鸟嘴).” answered the birds.
“No. Not one with a beak,” said the trees. “The perfect face is full of leaves.”
“Forget the beak and the leaves,” said the flowers. “If you want a perfect face, you fill it with colors.”
The doll followed their advice. However, it turned out that nobody liked it. And now he couldn’t erase
it! “I only wanted a face that everyone would like,“ he cried. “And now look, what a disaster（灾难）!”
A small cloud heard his cries and came to him, “I think I can help you. As I’m a cloud, I can make any
face you like. What do you think about me changing faces until there’s one that you like? I’m sure we can
fix you a little bit.”
The doll again felt hopeful. The cloud made all kinds of faces for him. But none of them was perfect

An author once said, “We live far happier lives when we are generous in as many ways as possible. ”
Here’s an example of my own: I love persimmons. They make me happy. The sweet, bright orange
fruit was the symbol of autumn in Iran, where I grew up; they also grow in California, where I now live. A
few years ago, preparing to travel from San Francisco to Boston, I packed two persimmons, one of which I
ate in the flight departure lounge, waiting to board the plane.
A lady came up and asked from which store in the airport the fruit was bought. She looked a bit
disappointed hearing that it couldn’t be bought from any airport vendor and returned to her seat. I thought
to myself I can give the second persimmon away. When I offered her the fruit, she at first refused, but when
I insisted, she was glad and appreciatively accepted. I was so happy to have made someone else happy, and
that, I thought, was the end of the story.
Sometime during the flight, the lady caught up with me to thank me again for the persimmon. She
shared that she had grown up in Japan, where there was a persimmon tree in the yard of her childhood
home. She now lived in Boston, where she hadn’t been able to find the fruit. The taste of this one
persimmon was precious to her, reconnecting her with memories of her parents and grandparents the way
only our senses of taste and smell are able, as if magically.
Only then did the impact（巨大影响）of this tiny act of generosity（慷慨）dawn on me. I am
moved by it to this day, so much so that the taste of the persimmon I never ate gives me more joy than all
the ones I have eaten, combined.
My experience is not unique. Research has shown that acts of generosity for others make us happier
than treating ourselves. A 2008 study found that despite participants’ predictions to the contrary, giving
money to someone else increased their own happiness more than spending it on themselves.

Fifty years ago, on April 22, 1970, twenty million Americans took to the streets to voice their concern
about the deteriorating (恶化的) environment. The movement led to Earth Day.
Unluckily, our planet is worse now than it was when Earth Day was first celebrated. The good news is

NASA is putting our planet up for adoption (收养), so you and your friends can claim a part of the
planet as your own. The space agency (宇航局) has divided the globe into 64,000 parts, each about 55
miles wide. All you have to do is type your name into NASA’s “Adopt the Planet” site to claim a certificate
(证书) that will give you the location of your slice of paradise complete with details of its environment.
NASA hopes that this exercise will stimulate (激发) interest and care in our planet.
If you happen to be anywhere near the nation’s capital on April 22, join the millions that are expected
to join in the Earth Day March at the National Mall. The purpose of the event that will feature guest
speakers and musical performances is to encourage citizens to take action by advertising this year’s Earth
Day theme: climate and environmental science literacy (素养).
While joining in the above-mentioned activities is a great idea, it is just the beginning. All that is
needed is small lifestyle changes. Planting a tree or two, going meatless just one day a week, or changing
