Every Sunday morning I take a walk around a park near my home. There’s a lake in one corner of the park.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司需要更多资料,请加【微信1】 :educat51 【微信2】 :studying100
Each time I walk by this lake, I see the same elderly woman sitting at the water’s edge with a small metal cage(笼
子)beside her.
This Sunday, I stopped walking and went over to her. As I got closer, I realized that there were three turtles
(乌龟), slowly walking around the base of the metal cage. She had a fourth turtle on her knee that she was
carefully wiping with a brush, which made me feel surprised.
“Hello, ” I said. “If you don’t mind my nosiness, I’d love to know what you’re doing with these turtles.”
“I’m cleaning off their shells,” she replied.
“Anything on a turtle’s shell weakens the turtle’s ability to take in heat and blocks its ability to swim. It can
also impair and weaken the shell over time.”
She went on, “I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by this lake and helping these little
guys out. It’s my own strange way of making a difference.”
“Well then, don’t you think your time could be better spent? And 99% of these turtles don’t have kind people
like you to help them clean off their shells. So, how exactly are your efforts here truly making a difference? ”
The woman smiled, then looked down at the turtle on her knee, wiped off the last piece of algae(海藻), and
said, “Sweetie, he’d tell you I just made all the difference in the world.”
26. What was the writer surprised at according to Paragraph 2?
A. Four turtles in the cage. B. The beautiful scenery in the park.
C. A small metal cage put beside the water. D. A woman cleaning off the turtles’ shells.
27. What does the underlined word “impair” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Make. B. Clean. C. Hurt. D. Recognize.
28. What did the writer mean when he said “don’t you think your time could be better spent? ” in Paragraph 7?
A. He thought what the woman did was a waste of time.
B. He thought the woman spent the time perfectly.
C. He thought the woman should spend time with him.
D. He thought it was easy to spend the time.
29. According to the text, what does the woman usually do in the park every Sunday morning?
a. relax by the lake b. help the turtles out c. talk with passers-by
d. clean off the turtles’ shells e. feed the turtles f. create a metal cage

The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research. Recent studies have
found positive advantages. A study conducted in Youngstown, Ohio, for example, employees were shown to be

15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated(装饰)with houseplants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)have taken it a step further changing the
actual composition(组成)of plants in order to get them to perform different(功能). These include plants that
have sensors(传感器)printed onto their leaves to show when they are lack(缺乏的)of water and a plant that
can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater, “We’re thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace
functions of the things that we use every day.” explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at
MIT.
One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow(发光)in experiments using some common
的
vegetables. Strano’s team found that they could create a faint(微弱 )light for three-and-a-half hours. The light,
is just a start. The technology, Strano said, could one day be used to light the rooms or even to turn trees into self-
powered street lamps.
In the future, the team hopes to develop a version(版本)of the technology that can be sprayed(喷洒)
onto plant leaves in a one-off treatment that would last the plant’s lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop
an on and off “switch” where the glow would fade(变暗)when exposed to daylight.
Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity used in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from
the power source(电源)—such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway—a lot of
energy is lost during transmission(传输).
Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy.
30. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. A new study of different plants. B. A big fall in crime rates.
C. Employees from various workplaces. D. Benefits from green plants.
31. What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineer?
A. To change compositions of plants. B. To detect plants’ lack of water.
C. To make the life of plants longer. D. To test chemicals in plants.
32. What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future?
A. They will speed up energy production. B. They may transmit electricity to the home.
C. They might help reduce the use of energy. D. They could take the place of power plants.
33. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Could glowing plants replace lamps? B. How do we live with glowing plants?
C. Can we grow more glowing plants? D. How are glowing plants made pollution-fee?

How would you like to build a time machine? Paper, sticks, glue and string are all you need. Put them together
to build a kite. A kite connects you to the past.
No one knows who flew the first kite. It was probably someone in China or perhaps Indonesia. Indonesian
fishermen hung fishhooks on kites and sent them out to sea to catch fish. Starting 2, 000 years ago, Chinese farmers
flew kites to welcome the New Year and bring good luck to Earth. In China, people also used kites during wartime.
One Chinese story tells how soldiers put noise makers on kites and flew them at night over the enemy camp. The
enemies were frightened by the noise and ran away.
About 1, 300 years ago, Chinese travelers took kites to Japan. Soon kites filled the skies there. Kites reached
Thailand about 700 years ago. During floods, Thai farmers flew kites over their fields. They hoped the kites would
drive away the clouds and stop the rain. Over time, kites flew their way out of Asia. Today, kites are popular all
over the world. Kite fans meet at festivals in many parts of the world and have great fun.
Over the years, kites have also helped people understand the natural world. In 1749, for example, cameras
hanging from kites took pictures of San Francisco, California after an earthquake. The photos helped people plan
what to do.
Kites also helped inventors find out how to make airplanes. The Wright brothers studied how kites flew, which
helped them make the first successful airplane.
Since the ancient Chinese first set their kites into the air, people have loved flying kites. Kites give us ways to
celebrate, relax and explore. So go fly a kite! Enjoy the feeling of wonder that kite flyers have felt for centuries.
38. According to the passage, in which countries were kites used to make good wishes?
A. China and Japan. B. China and Thailand.
C. Japan and Indonesia. D. Thailand and Indonesia.
39. How does the writer develop Paragraph 5?
A. By telling stories. B. By listing numbers.
C. By comparing facts. D. By giving examples.
40. What’s the purpose of this passage?
A. To show people how to fly kites. B. To explain how kites are used in science.
C. To introduce the roles of kites in history. D. To discuss the difference among kites worldwide.
