A study has confirmed what scientists have long known—eating a lot of red meat may be bad for your heart.      1      That may improve your heart and blood health.

In the new study, researchers followed more than 40,000 men in the United States over a 30-year period. The investigators looked at how red meat consumption influenced their risk of heart disease.      2      The findings showed that eating one serving of either processed or unprocessed red meat per day was associated with a 12% higher risk of heart disease, while a daily serving of processed red meat—like hot dogs or bacon—led to a 15% higher risk.

3      Many people know nothing about the health risks linked to red meat. In this study, the researchers decided to see if the risk of heart disease decreases when protein-rich, high-quality plant foods are eaten in place of red meat. They discovered that eating high-quality plant proteins like nuts, peas or soybeans lowered the risk of heart disease by 14%.

This study focuses on something that we need to remind everyone.      4      But is the problem just that? Further research is needed to evaluate the health effects of these meat substitutes. If you really miss that burger, but you don’t want it to be red meat, then you can use “fake meats” made from plants as an option. But whether there’s a benefit to them entirely is not known yet.

The researchers can’t rule out the possibility that unmeasured factors influenced their results.      5      These could raise or lower one’s risk for heart disease, including age, tobacco and alcohol use, and physical activity.

A. It’s the leading cause of death among Americans.

B. If you enjoy red meat, identify what you prefer to eat.

C. Compared to other unhealthy foods, red meat is often ignored.

D. We need to limit our red meat intake because of its link to heart disease risk.

E. Still, they accounted for several important personal and lifestyle factors.

F. This study points to an idea that is common across most nutritional studies.

G. So you are advised to choose plant-based proteins instead of ordering a steak.

2. A 设空前的“heart disease”与A项“它是美国人的‘头号杀手’”衔接紧密,此项中的“It”指代“heart disease”。故选A。
