put me in the group with any of my friends. Instead, I was with Mauro, who never spoke English, Juliette, who
always wore thick glasses and Rachel, who wore strange clothes. I had never talked to them. Oh, how badly I
wanted to be with my friends!
I was so sad that I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. "I know what you want, Karina, " she gently patted me on my
shoulder, "but your group needs a leader. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this project. Only you canmake it."
I was shocked.
"Will you help them?" she asked.
"Yes, " I replied. I couldn't believe it came out of my mouth, but it did.
I bravely walked to my group and started our project. We had different tasks according to our interests.
Gradually, 1 felt myself enjoying their company. I found out Mauro was struggling with English. Behind Juliette's
thick glasses were her sparkling eyes. Rachel was so creative that she wanted to be a fashion designer. I realized
that they were not strange; they were just people that no one cared enough for-except Mrs. Bartlett. Her
thoughtfulness brought out the best in the four of us.
I learned something that week. I was given a chance to see other people in a new light. I learned that who we,

Do you have good friends? Do you sometimes feel so close to them that they are like family to you?
It turns out that this isn’t just an expression. A study by Yale University has found that you and your friends have
more genes (基因) in common than strangers do. Researchers looked at the genes of 1,932 people and compared
them in pairs of unrelated friends and strangers. They found that friends have 1% of genes that match.
“1% of genes may not sound like much to the layperson (外行), but to geneticists (遗传学家) it is a larger
number,” Professor Nicholas Christakis of Yale University told Discovery News. In fact, this is the same amount of
genes you share with your fourth cousins, those who have the same great-great-great grandparents as you.
So do you happen to become friends with people who share your genes? Not at all. In fact, it is evolution (进
化) that brings you together.
“People who share certain genes also share skills and have similar likes and dislikes,” researchers said. In
ancient times, it was important that people who were alike stayed together. For example, people who had a similar
susceptibility (易感性) to the cold were more likely to help each other build a fire, giving them a better chance to
stay alive.
Researchers also found that among all the genes studied, those producing a change in sense of smell were the
most similar in friends.
This is probably because people who smell things in the same way are more easily drawn to similar environments.
For example, people who like the smell of coffee may hang out at cafes (咖啡馆) more often and as a result are more
likely to meet and become friends with each other.
With their findings, the team has developed an interesting test called the “friendship score”. It can help tell how
big the chances are that two people will be friends by studying their genes.
So, here is a question for you: would you like to take this test and know in advance (提前) who your friends are
going to be, or would you still prefer to learn about it by yourself and let time be the judge?
27. From the passage, we know that friends _______.A. look like our cousins B. share 1% of genes with us
C. feel close to our family D. can help us when we feel cold
28. The writer takes the example of ancient people in Paragraph 5 to _______.
A. study how ancient people dealt with the cold
B. predict that similar environments lead to friendship
C. prove that it is evolution that brings friends together
D. explain why ancient people gave each other chance to keep alive
29. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Friendship: Its Influence on People and Behavior.
B. Friendship: Its Benefits to Teens and Decision Making.
C. Friendship: Is It Necessary to Be Judged by Time?
D. Friendship: Is It Possible to Be Influenced by Genes?

Old habits, especially bad ones, can be hard to break.
People often make fun of New Year's resolutions (决心). However, resolutions present a big opportunity for
self-improvement. Fortunately, social science has some ideas about how to start a good habit and stick to it.
Gary Charness and Uri Gneezy, two scientists at the University of Chicago, did some research, where 120
students were asked to take part in an experiment about exercise habits, and each of them would get $175 in the
end. The students were randomly assigned (随机分配) to three groups. The first group got the money for justgiving researchers permission (允许) to record their gym attendance. The second group gave permission, but had to
go to the gym at least once the next month. The final group gave permission and had to go to the gym eight times
that month.
Unsurprisingly, the group that had to make eight gym visits to get paid exercised more than the other two
groups. After the payments stopped, these students kept going to the gym at higher rates (频率). They went to the
gym about twice as often as the other two groups.
In another study, researchers invited 151 students to work out in the gym, and randomly assigned 75 to a
“temptation-bundling” group. As they exercised, they listened to the start of an attractive audio-novel (有声小说).
At the end of their workout, students were told that if they wanted to hear what happened next in their book, they
would have to come back to the gym. They could only listen to the audio-book while exercising. The other 76
students also completed the first workout but without any kind of temptation bundle.
It turned out that the students in the temptation-bundling group visited the gym 27% more often than the
control group over the next seven weeks. Sadly, the temptation-bundling trick fell apart over the Thanksgiving
holiday when the gym was closed.
The studies show that trying something new quite often for as little as a month can kick-start a lasting change
in behavior. Moreover, “temptation-bundling” may also be a useful method for changing behavior, particularly
when used together with other methods. Even if you cannot promise yourself to stick with something for long, there
is a huge benefit in putting in a lot of energy for a few weeks. It may pay off for longer than you think. So, why not
challenge yourself with next New Year's resolution?
30. What can we learn from the two studies?
A. The students got different payments according to their gym attendance.
B. The temptation-bundling group loved audio-novels more than the other group.
C. 27% of students in the temptation-bundling group exercised more often than before.
D. The students who exercised more often at first were more likely to keep working out.
31. The third paragraph is mainly about __________.
A. how the research was performed B. what was found in the research
C. why the scientists did the research D. who took part in the research
32. The underlined word “temptation-bundling” in Paragraph 5 probably means __________.
A. forming new habits by trying something you didn't like before
B. connecting something you like with something you have to do
C. improving your workout skills by listening to audio-books
D. pushing yourself by doing two tasks at the same time33. What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To encourage people to go to the gym more often.
B. To present a new way to do scientific research.
C. To offer advice on how to develop a good habit.
D. To stress the importance of New Year's resolutions.
【答案】30. D 31. A 32. B 33. C
【解析】
【分析】俗话说“旧习难改”,本文介绍了科学家们做的两个实验,告诉我们习惯是可以改变的,只要你用
对的方法并坚持。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。第一个实验“After the payments stopped, these students kept going to the gym at higher rates (频
率).”可知那些经常去健身房的,实验结束后去健身房的次数更多,第二个实验“It turned out that the students
in the temptation-bundling group visited the gym 27% more often than the control group over the next seven
weeks.”中由于听小说去的次数多的人,比去的少的更容易坚持。故选D。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。第三段主要介绍了这个实验的具体分组,以及每组怎样做,因此A选项符合主旨。故选A。
【32题详解】
推理判断题。根据“As they exercised, they listened to the start of an attractive audio-novel (有声小说). At the end
of their workout, students were told that if they wanted to hear what happened next in their book, they would have to
come back to the gym.”可知temptation-bundling这组人在健身房可以听小说,然后他如果想要继续听,下次
就还要来健身房,因此与B选项“把你想做的事和不得不做的事联系到一起”相符合。故选B。
【33题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段最后一句话“Fortunately, social science has some ideas about how to start a good habit
and stick to it.”可知本文介绍的两个实验主要是关于如何开始一个习惯并坚持。因此本文主要是介绍形成习
惯的建议。故选C。

八、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Idioms are one of the hardest parts of learning a language. An idiom is a phrase which has a meaning, but the
meaning is not clear from the words themselves. They are like puzzles. If you translate an idiom word for word, it
sometimes makes no sense at all. That’s why even native speakers can get confused when someone uses a phrase
that they’ve never heard of.Here are four common English idioms every English student should know in a lot of situations.
1.Get your act together (Meaning: you need to improve your behaviour/work)
This might be something your teacher says to you if you score badly in an exam or if you misbehave in class. You
can also use it to talk about people in general. For example, if your friend is being mean for no reason, then you can
tell them that they need to get their act together.
2.Pull yourself together (Meaning: calm down)
It’s not polite to say “pull yourself together”to tell people to relax while they’re overreacting (反应过激). Only use
this if you think the person you are speaking to is getting upset over something important. When your friend tells
you that their close relative has died, it is NOT the time to tell them to pull themselves together.
3.I’m feeling under the weather (Meaning: I’m sick)
Yes, it’s longer and more difficult to say than “I’m sick”, but if your English teacher asks you why you haven’t
done your homework, he or she is more likely to forgive (原谅) you if you say that you were feeling under the
weather.
4.Break a leg (Meaning: good luck!)
This is perhaps one of the most confusing yet well-known English idioms. If someone says this to you, do not think
they are frightening you; they are just wishing you luck. It is most often used for people wishing success to actors
and actresses before they perform on the stage, but it can be said in other situations, too.
All in all, learning a new language can be challenging. It’s certainly not a piece of cake, especially when there are
so many confusing idioms. However, with enough hard work and interest, you will succeed in no time. Break a leg!
34. What is an idiom?
