Debating（辩论）changed my life.
I grew up extremely shy and spent most of my time avoiding people looking at me. As for public speaking, it
was always something that gave me high amounts of stress when I was in primary school. I didn’t have any friends
and felt lonely, having no one to talk to.
After I became a junior high schooler. I decided that I was going to change that. At the end of a Monday, aposter of the school debate team caught my attention. I took a deep breath and walked the long hallway to the
debate coach’s room, alone. Although I was scared to death, I introduced myself to the coach. Mrs. Brown. I was
met with a warm smile and understanding of my fears. Little did I know, I was beginning one of the most important
journeys of my life.
In the debate team, I met students from other classes. After several training classes, we became friends. It was

In another round, I only brought up some soft anguments. Mrs. Brown noticed this and she told me, “Alice,

prepare for all debates with my partners, coming up with arguments, and facing off against the opponents（对手）.

Climate Change Likely to Reduce the Amount of Sleep
Most research on the influence of climate change has focused on how extreme weather affects economy andthe society. Yet climate change may also have a strong influence on daily human activities. In a study published in
the journal One Earth, researchers report that increasing environment temperatures negatively influence human
sleep around the world.
The team says their findings suggest that by the year 2099, increasing temperatures may erode（侵蚀）50 to
58 hours of sleep per person per year. In addition, the temperature effect on sleep loss is stronger for people from
lower income（收入）countries as well as for older adults and females.
“Sleep is important to human health and productivity,” says the first author Kelton Minor of the University of
Copenhagen. “In this study, we provide enough evidence that warmer-than-average temperatures erode human
sleep by making people fall asleep later and wake up earlier.” The researchers collected global sleep data（数据）
which included 7 million nightly sleep records from more than 47,000 adults across 68 countries. The results
showed that on very warm nights when the temperature is greater than 30℃, sleep decreases an average of just over
14 minutes. The likelihood of getting less than seven hours of sleep also increases.
“Humans’ body temperature is fixed,” Minor says. “Every night our bodies have to shed（散发）heat into the
surrounding environment by increasing blood flow to our hands and feet. In order for our bodies to shed heat, the
surrounding environment needs to be cooler than we are.”
Early controlled studies found that both humans and animals sleep worse when the room temperature is too
hot or too cold. However, the recent research found that people feel far better living in colder outside temperatures
than hotter conditions. “Across seasons and different climates, the amount of sleep loss increases as temperatures
become hotter,” Minor says.
One important finding was that people in developing countries seem to be more influenced by these changes.
It’s possible that the wider use of air conditioning in developed countries could play a role.
In the future, the team would like to work with global climate scientists, sleep researchers, and technology
providers to do further research on the sleep and behavior changes of other populations and countries.

Also known as self-control and self-discipline, willpower is not a new concept. But we still do not have
common awareness as to how to develop it. Many people believe they could improve their lives if only they had
more willpower. With more self-control, we would all eat right, exercisc regularly, save for retirement, and achieve
all sorts of goals.
Unfortunately, most people find it hard to say no to immediate pleasure. So how can we fight against
temptation. In recent years, scicntists have made some discoveries about the ways that willpower works. This report
will explore our current understanding of self-control.
University of Pennsylvania psychologists Angela Duckworth. Ph.D., and Martin Seligman, Ph.D., explored
self-control in eighth-graders over the course of the school year. The researchers first examined the students’ self-
discipline by having teachers, parents, and the students themselves complete questionnaires. They also gave
students a task in which they had the choice of receiving S1 immediately or waiting a week to receive S2.
The researchers found that students who ranked high on self-discipline had better grades, and they were more
likely to be admitted to a competitive high school program. Self-discipline, they found, was more important than IQ
in predicting academic（学术的）success.
Other studies have noticed similar patterns. June Tangney. Ph.D., of George Mason University, and colleagues
compared willpower by asking university students to complete questionnaires designed to measure their self-
control. The scientists also created a scale（量表）to score the student’s relative willpower strength. They found
out that the students’ self-control scores were connccted with higher scores, higher self-esteem less binge（放纵）
eating, and better relationship skills.
The benefits of willpowcr seem to exist beyond the college years. Terrie Moffitt.Ph.D., of Duke University,
and colleagues studied self-control in a group of 1,000 individuals from their birth to age 32 as part of a long-term
health study in Dunedin, New Zealand. Mofflitt and her colleagues found that individuals with high self-control in
childhood grew into adults with greater physical and mental health, better savings behavior, and financial security.
Those patterns held even after the researchers controlled for the children’s socioeconomic status, home lives,
and general intelligence. Such findings showed the importance of willpower in nearly all areas of life. However, the
most common stress coping strategies are also the least effective ones, such as playing video games, surfing the
Internet, and watching TV or movies for more than 2 hours. All in all, we all have willpower and we all need it. Butmost of us would be closer to achieving all our goals if we focused on improving our willpower.

Lie down, but don’t be beaten down.
“Tang ping”, or “lie down”, has become a buzzword among young Chinese people recently. It is used to
describe youngsters who give up all ambitions of achieving worldly success in life, and instead do the least to get
by. Such people prefer to lie down, lower their desire for buying new things, and keep themselves far away from
competition for fame and money.
Many say such people don’t want to work hard for a better life. Others say those who “lie down” decide to
avoid the unreasonable fierce competition at school and work, looking for new ways of developing their career and
leading a meaningful life.
It’s no good criticizing the young generation for “lying down” before finding out why they choose to do so.
The fierce competition for a good college, the tiring 996 work schedule（working from 9 am to 9 pm, six days
a week）, and the skyrocketing house prices frustrate（使挫败）many young people. Some even believe no
matter how hard they try, they will fail. In this case, why not lie down in the first place?
Instead of taking part in “involution”（内卷）, which gives people a burned-out feeling and makes
individual efforts less worthwhile in involuntary （不自愿的）competitions, these young people would rather live
a different life, focusing more on their personal development than success.
This trend of “lying down” requires attention but there is no need to panic. On the one hand, it serves as a
warning to prevent the country from sliding into a low-desire society, as happened in Japan, where an aging
population and a large number of young people who have lost their passion are destroying the economy. On the
other hand, the phrase serves more as self-mockery（自嘲）, and thus serious criticism is not necessary. Young
people also like to call themselves “corporate slaves”（社畜）though they mean no harm to the company. These
fun terms help them find people alike and feel better.
Luckily, the government and more companies are seeking solutions to ease the pressure of the young. For
