Teenagers Magazine asked some of them about their vacation. I went to a grassland in Inner Mongolia with my family by car. It was sunny and dry and we had a really good time. We tried horse riding and camping. I was excited. There were so many horses and sheep on the grassland and it was peaceful to watch them. But I have to tell you that it was really cold in the morning. PeterMy friends and I went to Universal Studios together during the holiday. Because of the holiday season, there were so many visitors in the park and we had to wait more than 2 hours for each ride. We were so bored. It was windy and we didn’t bring thick clothes, so all of us felt cold there. My friend bought me a Kungfu Panda in the gift shop and I really like it. Tina My National Day holiday was great! My uncle and my cousin came to Beijing and visited us. We went to the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. Although there were lots of visitors, we still had a good time. It was a little rainy but my mother took us to my favorite restaurant — the Season and we enjoyed all kinds of seafood there. Alice I didn’t go anywhere during the holiday because my leg was broken and it was difficult for me to move. I just stayed at home but I was happy. I finished my homework on the first day. My grandparents came to look after me and they brought their pet dog — Tesla, which is active and lovely. It was my first time to stay with a pet and my mom promised me to have one next year. Sam 27. Windy and dry. 29. Sam didn’t go anywhere because ________. A. he broke his leg B. his grandparents came C. his pet dog was ill D. he had much homework B Debating(辩论)changed my life. I grew up extremely shy and spent most of my time avoiding people looking at me. As for public speaking, it was always something that gave me high amounts of stress when I was in primary school. I didn’t have any friends and felt lonely, having no one to talk to. After I became a junior high schooler. I decided that I was going to change that. At the end of a Monday, aposter of the school debate team caught my attention. I took a deep breath and walked the long hallway to the debate coach’s room, alone. Although I was scared to death, I introduced myself to the coach. Mrs. Brown. I was met with a warm smile and understanding of my fears. Little did I know, I was beginning one of the most important journeys of my life. In the debate team, I met students from other classes. After several training classes, we became friends. It was the first time I made some friends. When the debates began, I didn’t want to lose friends I cared about, so I oflen pretended(假装)to agree with them or I just said “let’s agree to disagree”. In another round, I only brought up some soft anguments. Mrs. Brown noticed this and she told me, “Alice, true friends have heated debates with each other and still remain friends after that. If a friendslip depends on winning or losing a debate about any subject, it isn’t much of a real friendship.” Then I started trying my best to prepare for all debates with my partners, coming up with arguments, and facing off against the opponents(对手). Surprisingly, it brought us closer and helped me form a connection not only with my partners but also with my opponents. Six years later, I can say that my strongest friendships started from arguing with strangers. They stood by me when I was going through hard times, and those moments shaped me into the person I am today. 30. How did the writer feel about public speaking in primary school? A. Excited. B. Confident. C. Stressed. D. Bored. 31. To avoid losing friends in the debate team, the writer ________. A. tried her best to beat other debaters B. kept meeting students from other classcs C. went to training classes one after another D. pretended to agree with others during debates 32. What did Mrs. Brown think of real friendships? A. Real friends debate quite a lot when they are together. B. Real fricnds debate with each other but remain friends. C. Real friendships are usually built upon heated debates. D. Real friendships depend on winning or losing a debate. C Climate Change Likely to Reduce the Amount of Sleep Most research on the influence of climate change has focused on how extreme weather affects economy andthe society. Yet climate change may also have a strong influence on daily human activities. In a study published in the journal One Earth, researchers report that increasing environment temperatures negatively influence human sleep around the world. The team says their findings suggest that by the year 2099, increasing temperatures may erode(侵蚀)50 to 58 hours of sleep per person per year. In addition, the temperature effect on sleep loss is stronger for people from lower income(收入)countries as well as for older adults and females. “Sleep is important to human health and productivity,” says the first author Kelton Minor of the University of Copenhagen. “In this study, we provide enough evidence that warmer-than-average temperatures erode human sleep by making people fall asleep later and wake up earlier.” The researchers collected global sleep data(数据) which included 7 million nightly sleep records from more than 47,000 adults across 68 countries. The results showed that on very warm nights when the temperature is greater than 30℃, sleep decreases an average of just over 14 minutes. The likelihood of getting less than seven hours of sleep also increases. “Humans’ body temperature is fixed,” Minor says. “Every night our bodies have to shed(散发)heat into the surrounding environment by increasing blood flow to our hands and feet. In order for our bodies to shed heat, the surrounding environment needs to be cooler than we are.” Early controlled studies found that both humans and animals sleep worse when the room temperature is too hot or too cold. However, the recent research found that people feel far better living in colder outside temperatures than hotter conditions. “Across seasons and different climates, the amount of sleep loss increases as temperatures become hotter,” Minor says. One important finding was that people in developing countries seem to be more influenced by these changes. It’s possible that the wider use of air conditioning in developed countries could play a role. In the future, the team would like to work with global climate scientists, sleep researchers, and technology providers to do further research on the sleep and behavior changes of other populations and countries. 33. According to the passage, on a very warm night, you could probably ________. A. sleep less than seven hours B. sleep outdoors to cool down C. be more energetic than usual D. be troubled by your noisy pet 34. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about? A. The results of earlier studies. B. Different methods of doing research. C. Reasons for making controlled studies. D. The new findings of the recent research. 35. How did Kelton Minor study the influence of climate change on sleep? A. By doing experiments in labs. B. By making a guess and proving it. C. By collecting and comparing data. D. By finding mistakes in early studies.D Also known as self-control and self-discipline, willpower is not a new concept. But we still do not have common awareness as to how to develop it. Many people believe they could improve their lives if only they had more willpower. With more self-control, we would all eat right, exercisc regularly, save for retirement, and achieve all sorts of goals. Unfortunately, most people find it hard to say no to immediate pleasure. So how can we fight against temptation. In recent years, scicntists have made some discoveries about the ways that willpower works. This report will explore our current understanding of self-control. University of Pennsylvania psychologists Angela Duckworth. Ph.D., and Martin Seligman, Ph.D., explored self-control in eighth-graders over the course of the school year. The researchers first examined the students’ self- discipline by having teachers, parents, and the students themselves complete questionnaires. They also gave students a task in which they had the choice of receiving S1 immediately or waiting a week to receive S2. The researchers found that students who ranked high on self-discipline had better grades, and they were more likely to be admitted to a competitive high school program. Self-discipline, they found, was more important than IQ in predicting academic(学术的)success. Other studies have noticed similar patterns. June Tangney. Ph.D., of George Mason University, and colleagues compared willpower by asking university students to complete questionnaires designed to measure their self- control. The scientists also created a scale(量表)to score the student’s relative willpower strength. They found out that the students’ self-control scores were connccted with higher scores, higher self-esteem less binge(放纵) eating, and better relationship skills. The benefits of willpowcr seem to exist beyond the college years. Terrie Moffitt.Ph.D., of Duke University, and colleagues studied self-control in a group of 1,000 individuals from their birth to age 32 as part of a long-term health study in Dunedin, New Zealand. Mofflitt and her colleagues found that individuals with high self-control in childhood grew into adults with greater physical and mental health, better savings behavior, and financial security. Those patterns held even after the researchers controlled for the children’s socioeconomic status, home lives, and general intelligence. Such findings showed the importance of willpower in nearly all areas of life. However, the most common stress coping strategies are also the least effective ones, such as playing video games, surfing the Internet, and watching TV or movies for more than 2 hours. All in all, we all have willpower and we all need it. Butmost of us would be closer to achieving all our goals if we focused on improving our willpower. 36. The word “temptation” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________. A. feelings B. habits C. wants D. questions 37. What can we learn about willpower from the passage? A. Willpower is connected with better academic performance. B. Students with good relationship skills have weak willpower. C. Students in competitive high schools have stronger willpower. D. Willpower is less important than IQ in predicting academic success. 38. Why does the writer talk about the study of Terrie Moffitt in Paragraph 6? A. To explain the reason people need financial security. B. To stress the importance of physical and mental health. C. To show people benefit from willpower for a long time. . D To advise people to develop willpower when they are adults. 39. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Willpower: The Secrets to Achieving Academic Success B. Willpower: The Strategy of Coping with Pressure C. Willpower: The Key to Understanding Ourselves D. Willpower: The Strength to Improve Our Life 九、阅读与表达。(共10分,每小题2分) 阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。 Nowadays with the use of at least one social media platform (平台), you are often logged into a few social media accounts (账户) at the same time. It is used to describe youngsters who give up all ambitions of achieving worldly success in life, and instead do the least to get by. Such people prefer to lie down, lower their desire for buying new things, and keep themselves far away from competition for fame and money. Many say such people don’t want to work hard for a better life. Others say those who “lie down” decide to avoid the unreasonable fierce competition at school and work, looking for new ways of developing their career and leading a meaningful life. It’s no good criticizing the young generation for “lying down” before finding out why they choose to do so. The fierce competition for a good college, the tiring 996 work schedule(working from 9 am to 9 pm, six days a week), and the skyrocketing house prices frustrate(使挫败)many young people. Some even believe no matter how hard they try, they will fail. In this case, why not lie down in the first place? Instead of taking part in “involution”(内卷), which gives people a burned-out feeling and makes individual efforts less worthwhile in involuntary (不自愿的)competitions, these young people would rather live a different life, focusing more on their personal development than success. This trend of “lying down” requires attention but there is no need to panic. On the one hand, it serves as a warning to prevent the country from sliding into a low-desire society, as happened in Japan, where an aging population and a large number of young people who have lost their passion are destroying the economy. On the other hand, the phrase serves more as self-mockery(自嘲), and thus serious criticism is not necessary. Young people also like to call themselves “corporate slaves”(社畜)though they mean no harm to the company. These fun terms help them find people alike and feel better. Luckily, the government and more companies are seeking solutions to ease the pressure of the young. For instance, Bye-Dance Technology made new rules last November to discourage staff from working overtime. The company told its employees not to work beyond 7 pm. In recent years, the government is also putting growingefforts into lowering housing prices and providing public rental housing. Success shouldn’t be measured by fame and money only. People from all walks of life deserve equal respect. For young people, what they really desire is being seen. Actually, Chinese young people are fulfilling their duties well. The average age of more than 67,000 scientists and engineers who devote themselves to China’s aerospace cause is only 36 years old. And many excel in ordinary jobs. They live on their own, support their families, and contribute to the society with their work. They may lie down for a while when they are tired, but they will never be beaten down. . 65 The underlined word “burned-out” in Paragraph 5 probably means “________”. A. exhausted B. scared C. worried D. shocked 66. What can we learn about the trend of “lying down” from the passage? A. It prevents the country from sliding into a low-desire society. B. It started in Japan, where “involution” destroyed the economy. C. It happens in big cities because work hours are long and house prices are high. D. It requires little serious criticism as young people use it to make fun of themselves. 67. What is Paragraph 7 mainly about? A. What society has done to help young people. B. How Chinese young people ease their pressure. C. How companies stop young people from “lying down”. D. What responsibilities the society has for young people. 68. The writer would probably agree that ________. . A it is necessary to respect people who refuse to “lie down” B. some young people “lie down” to get ready for future life C. the people who excel in ordinary jobs should be better paid D. it is fine for some people to lie down as long as they succeed
