What they said was “Let Joe do it.” For example, if Joe was reaching out to pick up a glass, it would often end
up falling to the floor, and his mother would say, “Oh no, let Joe do it.”

It was a sunny weekend. Laura and Amanda were sitting on the beach, ready to take part in the sand sculpture
contest(沙滩雕塑比赛). The two sisters had been building sandcastles(沙堡)for years. They were really good
at it. People often stopped to enjoy their work.
“I am confident about the sand sculpture contest. Let’s try to come up with a winning idea for today. We should

“I think we should make a sandcastle town, like we always do. Look, I collected all these shells(贝壳)for the
walls of the sandcastle town,” Amanda said. She pointed at the shells of all sizes.
“Come on, let’s do something different,” Laura shouted. “Think big!”
“I don’t know,” Amanda said. “I think I will stick to(坚持)the sandcastle plan.” She held a lot of sand in her
hands, trying to make it into a castle corner.
“I’ll just make my own, then.” Laura got angry so she walked a few meters away and then started to make her
own sculpture.
At the end of the day, Laura gave up on her sculpture of a big fish attacking(攻击)a castle. It looked like a
funny house with something silly on it. Laura wanted to make it better but she didn’t have time to improve it.
Amanda had made a small castle decorated(装饰)with a lot of shells. Around it, Amanda managed to build
farmland out of the sand, but she didn’t finish as she had spent most of her time making little shell animals.
Looking around, Laura and Amanda realized that neither of them would win the contest. Laura’s sculpture was
missing Amanda’s skillful touch, and Amanda’s castle was missing Laura’s big ideas.

B. Because Laura wanted to give up the contest but Amanda didn’t agree.
C. Because Amanda got help from her art teacher but Laura didn’t.
D. Because Amanda finished her sculpture but Laura didn’t.

Have you ever thought about what astronauts eat when they’re in space? What would they eat if they had to
travel all the way to Mars (火星) ? A lot of the food astronauts eat is processed (加工过的) because it’s simple to
第6页/共11页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司eat and easy to take into space. However, some vitamins (维生素) can break down if the food is stored for a long time.
People may have health problems if they eat processed food every day.
Growing fresh food in space might help astronauts stay healthy. It would also give them more food choices.
Fresh vegetables grown on Earth have many nutrients (营养物质) that processed food do not have. However, we
don’t know if vegetables grown in space are the same. Another worry is making sure that these vegetables don’t have
the bacteria or fungi (细菌或真菌) that could make people sick.
Luckily, we have a plant growth room called Veggie on ISS (the International Space Station). We used Veggie
to find out if it’s possible to grow nutritious and safe food in space.
We used Veggie to grow red lettuce (红生菜) over three years. We compared these (ISS-grown) vegetables to
those grown at the same time on Earth. They were grown under the same conditions as on the ISS. We did research
on the leaves and roots of all the lettuce plants. And we did not find any differences in nutrients between ISS-grown
lettuce and Earth-grown produce. This means that it is possible to grow nutritious and safe food on ISS and astronauts
should be able to eat vegetables grown in Veggie without worrying about getting sick.
Even though our lettuce is safe to eat, we still need to work out two problems. Firstly, there are more bacteria
and fungi on ISS-grown lettuce. The wet environment in Veggie is probably the reason. Secondly, there are some
differences in nutrients between the vegetables we grew in different years. Plants can change with too much or too
little water, but it is hard to water plants in zero gravity (零重力) . Therefore, we need to make sure that growing
environments are consistent in Veggie. Then astronauts can be confident about the nutrients in their food during
their long stay in space.
40. The researchers grew red lettuce in Veggie to ______.
A. decide what kind of food astronauts should eat in space
.
B find out how to keep astronauts safe and healthy in space
C. check if fresh vegetables can be processed safely in space
D. test if it’s possible to grow nutritious and safe food in space
41. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Earth-grown vegetables are safer and have more nutrients.
.
B ISS-grown lettuce of different years has different nutrients.
C. Scientists wanted to understand nutrients in processed food.
D. Fewer bacteria and fungi were found on ISS-grown vegetables.
42. What do the underlined words “are consistent” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Stay unchanged. B. Become special. C. Stay comfortable. D. Become enjoyable.
43. The last paragraph suggests that ______.
第7页/共11页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司A. Veggie plays an important part in astronauts’ healthy eating
B. astronauts need to keep the plant growth room dry and clean
C. researchers didn’t find out what food could be grown in space
D. scientists need to do further research on planting food in space

Traditions are important. They tell us who we are and who we are becoming. Traditions connect us to our history,
present and future. When celebrating them, we feel accepted, comfortable and safe.
When we were young, we all had traditions that were important to us. As we have grown older, we still celebrate
many of them in new places and in different ways. But have you ever thought about creating your own traditions?
It’s a fun practice and can bring you special memories! Here is how you can get started.
First of all, it is OK to try different ideas. Maybe you have got an idea you love, but no one else does. It’s fine
to try something else. Remember that traditions can grow, develop and change over time. When your group size or
interests change, you can change your tradition accordingly (相应地) to make it happen.
It’s a good idea to ask more people to create traditions together. The reason is that people will find a tradition
more meaningful if they start it themselves. And there are many ways to let everyone take part. For example, you can
invite people to help name the tradition or choose a date to celebrate.
Finally, traditions don’t have to be big things. Find something that is important and celebrate it. Pick a favorite
holiday, or season and find something that your friends or family like and do it. You don’t have to start traditions on
holidays, either. Just pick a restaurant to eat at every year on birthdays or go to the same place seasonally. Pick a night
of the week and make it family night. Play a game, watch a movie or take a walk in a park, whatever works for your
family. The most important thing is to find something that is meaningful and that people like.
Remember that the more joyous or fun a tradition is, the more likely your family and friends will want to keep
it. Your traditions are just that—yours.

The Woodcutter’s Gift
One night, a strong thunderstorm knocked down the big tree in the town square. After the storm, all the neighbors,

“That ugly tree is dead,” said the house painter. “Let’s clear it.”
“Don’t clear it,” the woodcutter said, “The beauty of it is not on the outside but on the inside. It could belong
(属于) to everyone.”
“How?”
The woodcutter smiled, “It’s a surprise.”
Neighbors went curious (好奇的). They watched him work every day until the night came.
Finally, he finished.
Everyone crowded outside his house. The woodshed door opened.
“I made a zoo for the children to enjoy,” the woodcutter said proudly. Life-sized wooden animals stood before
them.
“Wow!” the children shouted with excitement. A giraffe, a zebra, a lion, a tiger and a turtle!
Even the painter couldn’t believe his eyes.
“These animals still need a coat of paint,” the woodcutter said.
“Can we paint them?” the children begged (祈求).
“Of course,” he said, “as soon as I get some paint.”
“Wait. We’ll get the paint,” said the neighbors, rushing home. They returned with the paint and paintbrushes.
Everyone crowded in the square to paint the animals. When they finally finished, they talked and laughed in
front of the orange giraffe, the pink turtle and the zebra in yellow and purple.
“I couldn’t have done a better job,” said the woodcutter, smiling.
To celebrate, the townspeople had a big party in the square.
Some days later, some men came to the woodcutter. The curious neighbors crowded outside his house again.
“These gentlemen want to buy the zoo for the museum,” the woodcutter said.
Everyone was quiet. Then a little boy asked sadly, “Does that mean we’ll lose our zoo?”
The woodcutter looked at the crowd. “Look at how our zoo has brought us all together. The zoo belongs here.”
“It’s not for sale. But I will donate(捐赠) one piece.” All the people cheered. “Thank you for your gift. It’s more
than a zoo for us!” They celebrated. They danced.
56. What did the woodcutter bring to the townspeople?

57. If you were the woodcutter, what would you do with the zoo? And why?
