Dark-Sky Parks: Bringing Back the Stars

In many cities today, children grow up without ever seeing the Milky Way. Bright streetlights, glowing shop windows and endless billboards have washed the stars out of the night sky. Scientists call this "light pollution", and in some regions it is spreading at about ten percent a year. But a quiet change is under way. Around the world, more than two hundred places — from remote valleys to city-edge parks — have been named "dark-sky parks", areas where artificial light is strictly controlled so that people can enjoy the night sky again.

The idea sounds simple: use less light, and the stars return. In practice, it takes careful planning. Dark-sky parks replace old lamps with shielded ones that point downwards, switch off decorative lighting after midnight, and even set "lights-out hours" for nearby buildings. The results can be striking. Visitors to one park in New Zealand said they saw thousands of stars for the first time in their lives.

Importantly, these programmes are not asking people to live in the dark. Research shows that much of the light we produce is wasted — it shines into the sky or spills where nobody needs it. Shielded, well-directed lighting actually improves safety, because it lights the ground where people walk instead of dazzling their eyes. Cities that have adopted such measures often save money on electricity as well.

There are benefits for wildlife, too. Sea turtles, which naturally follow the moonlight to the ocean, often crawl towards bright hotel lights instead. Migrating birds become confused by glowing towers and circle them until they drop from exhaustion. In dark-sky areas, scientists have recorded the return of insects, bats and other night animals within just a few years.

For teenagers, dark-sky parks offer something rare: a chance to look up and feel small in a good way. Many parks now hold free "star parties", where volunteers set up telescopes and teach visitors to find planets and constellations. As one fifteen-year-old visitor put it, "I thought the sky had about twenty stars. It turned out I had only ever been shown twenty."

1. What does the writer tell us about light pollution in the first paragraph?

A. It has already been solved in most cities.B. It is becoming more serious year by year.C. It mainly comes from shop windows.D. It prevents people from going out at night.

2. According to Paragraph 2, dark-sky parks ______.

A. forbid visitors to enter after midnightB. ask nearby buildings to turn off all lights at onceC. use lamps designed to shine downwardsD. move old streetlights to remote valleys

3. Why does the writer say shielded lighting improves safety?

A. It makes the ground brighter where people actually walk.B. It keeps wild animals away from city streets.C. It allows people to see the stars more clearly.D. It reduces the number of cars on the road.

4. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. Star parties charge teenagers a small fee.B. Telescopes are now cheap enough for every family.C. Visitors can learn about the night sky from volunteers.D. Most teenagers are disappointed by what they see.

How to Become a Backyard Astronomer

Stargazing does not require an expensive telescope or a trip to the countryside.  36  All you really need are dark-adapted eyes, a little patience and a bit of planning.

First, choose the right night. The best views come when the moon is new or thin, because moonlight can hide the fainter stars.  37  Even a small park or a rooftop away from streetlights will double what you can see.

Next, give your eyes time. It takes about twenty minutes in the dark for your eyes to reach full sensitivity.  38  A bright phone screen can undo twenty minutes of dark adaptation in a single glance, so experienced observers often cover their screens with red film.

You do not need to memorise the whole sky. Start with something easy to find, such as the Big Dipper, and use it to "star-hop" to nearby groups of stars.  39  Sky apps can show you the heavens in real time, but many astronomers still prefer paper star maps, which show only what is actually visible to the naked eye.

Finally, dress warmly and keep your first sessions short. Even in summer, standing still at night feels much colder than walking.  40  Like any hobby, stargazing improves with practice — and every clear night rewards you with something new.

A. Then, get as far from bright lights as you can — though you don't have to travel far.

B. A thermos of hot tea and a folding chair can turn a quick look into a pleasant hour.

C. In fact, your own backyard is often good enough to begin with.

D. That is why you should avoid checking your phone unless it is really necessary.

E. Binoculars are cheaper than telescopes and much easier to carry around.

F. Joining a local astronomy club is another good way to learn faster.

G. Once you know one pattern, the rest of the sky begins to make sense.

1. B。首段明确指出光污染「in some regions it is spreading at about ten percent a year」,即逐年加重,对应 B 项「becoming more serious year by year」。

2. C。 第二段「replace old lamps with shielded ones that point downwards」说明暗夜公园使用向下照射的带罩灯具,故选 C。

3. A。第三段「it lights the ground where people walk instead of dazzling their eyes」:带罩灯具把光照在行人脚下的地面上而不是晃眼睛,对应 A 项。
