On hearing the frantic shouts, Tom grabbed a rope and headed toward the water. At the bank, he spotted Bennett clinging to a small tree, his face blue with cold. The current was too strong to swim against. Tom secured the rope to a sturdy tree and threw the free end toward him. “Grab it!” he shouted. Bennett caught it with both hands. Bracing himself on the slippery bank, Tom pulled steadily until he could seize Bennett’s shoulders and drag him ashore. Bennett collapsed, coughing up water and trembling with cold. (77)

Moments later, Mary arrived and saw Bennett lying on the muddy bank. She knelt beside him, tears filling her eyes. “I thought I’d lost you,” she whispered. Bennett squeezed her hand and nodded toward Tom. “Thanks to him.” Tom wrapped his jacket around Bennett’s trembling shoulders and called for help. As they waited, Bennett watched the stranger who had risked his safety to save him. Gratitude filled his heart, and he silently promised to offer the same kindness whenever someone else needed a helping hand. (73)
