第五部分 模拟试题中的运用(背诵范文中的非谓语动词句子)
1.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。(2025 年1 月·浙江高考)
Kevin was pretty bored. His mother was at work, and his father had been away on business. Therefore, he was
left in the care of Mrs. Hill, an old lady who lived next door. His parents had raised the 12-year-old to be a good
boy. He never got into trouble, though sometimes he wanted to do risky things. Mrs. Hill was asleep. Kevin sighed
(叹息) and hoped something exciting would happen. Suddenly, a movement outside caught his eye.
Mrs. Hill’s front window faced Mr. and Mrs. Green’s house across the street. The couple had both gone to
work, so it was strange that someone was over there. Kevin stared at the man at their front door. Suddenly, the man
jumped through an open window into the house. With his heart in his mouth, Kevin grabbed Mrs. Hill’s home
phone and called the police.
Thinking that the man might get away with whatever he wanted before the police arrived, Kevin decided to do
something. He rushed out of Mrs. Hill’s house and crossed the street quickly. Grabbing a branch from a cut-down
tree, he jumped in through the window. “Stop right there! You must leave right now!” he called out, holding the
branch with both hands.
The man froze for a second, but when he saw the skinny boy he breathed a sigh of relief. “Hey, kid, put that
down. It was my home. My parents used to live here and my father’s watch was here,” he explained, trying to lift a
floorboard.
At that moment, the sounds of a police car echoed ( 回响) in the air. The man stood up in a panic, then ran
through the house toward the window and jumped out. Kevin followed out and told the arriving police officers
what had happened. They pursued and arrested the man.
Kevin went back to Mrs. Hill’s house. Somehow he wasn’t sure he had done the right thing. “What if he has
told the truth?” he thought to himself. The man’s words sounded pretty convincing.

Two years ago, homeless Minnie was adopted by a single rich woman. Life did get a bit easier ever since she
was taken in by her foster mom, but the little girl was still not happy. How she wished she could have a father!
One morning in class, Minnie’s teacher, Mr Thompson, made a surprising announcement, making Minnie
frown (皱眉) again.
“Kids, tomorrow is Father’s Day! And at school, we’re all celebrating it by having breakfast with Dads! All
of you get to bring your dads or anyone you look up to as your dad to school tomorrow. We’ll all sit in one circle,
share funny stories, and have breakfast together.”
“What a terrible idea!” Minnie muttered (咕哝) under her breath.
For the rest of the day, most kids were talking up their fathers: businessmen, policemen, engineers, and even
an actor. Everybody had somebody who was a father figure, except for Minnie.
After school, Mr Thompson spotted the sad little girl sitting alone by the school gate.
“Are you all right, Minnie?” Mr Thompson asked. Suddenly, the child hugged his legs and cried. Minnie told
her trouble to her teacher and Mr Thompson comforted her.
After getting home that evening, Mr Thompson couldn’t shake off the sadness he had seen on Minnie’s face.
Suddenly, he had an idea. He opened his laptop, and as the keys on the keyboard clattered, Mr Thompson began to
smile.
He was putting out a post on social media, sharing Minnie’s story and asking for a dad to volunteer for
Minnie and show up to school the next day as her father figure. Thirty minutes later, his phone buzzed.
And it buzzed again and again. By the time the teacher checked his phone, he was shocked to see the number
flashing across the screen.
“50 volunteers? Am I reading this right?” Mr Thompson gasped. He put on his glasses and read through all
the responses on his post. He was so surprised. These 50 volunteers all wanted to come and help Minnie.

州外国语学校高三月考)
It was a typical busy noon at the downtown fast-food spot. The smell of sizzling patties and crispy fries
lingered (弥漫) in the air, and the place was packed with folks rushing to grab a quick meal. I’d just gotten off a
long morning at work, and my stomach was empty as I finally reached the front of the line and got my order-a
burger, fries, and a cold drink.
As I set the tray (托盘) down on a small table by the window, I glanced over and saw two firefighters in the
corner. Their uniforms were heavy with faint spots, like they’d just stepped away from a smoky scene, and their
boots still held a hint of damp from the morning dew. They stood in the back of the line, shoulders relaxed but eyes
tired.
I was just about to pick up my burger-the cheese melted perfectly-when a loud, sharp siren ( 警报) cut
through the noise of the restaurant. The two firefighters froze for half a second, and then moved. No hesitation, no
exchange of words — just muscle memory. One grabbed his helmet off the nearby counter, the other adjusted his
radio on his shoulder, and they turned toward the door, their steps quickening. I watched them go, and my fork
paused mid-air.
My empty stomach served as a quiet reminder of how long I’d waited for this meal. I’d stood in that line for
15 minutes, my feet aching from the morning’s work. Giving them my lunch meant I would have to wait again-
maybe another line, maybe my break slipping away faster. I bit my lip, staring at the tray. Then I thought of their
uniforms, the spots, the way they’d act upon hearing the siren like it was a call they couldn’t ignore. They didn’t get
to pause for a meal when emergencies hit. They’d probably go hours without eating, running from one call to the
next.

Jiang Hui was born into a poor family in Santai County, a mountainous area in Mianyang. His parents, both
farmers with calloused hands and sun-wrinkled faces, struggled to make ends meet by planting rice and corn on the
barren hillside. The thatched-roof house they lived in leaked whenever it rained, and the only electrical appliance
was a 14-inch black-and-white TV that often broke down.
Life during high school was even harder. To save money for textbooks, Jiang Hui never bought breakfast. At
noon, while classmates rushed to the canteen for hot meals, he would slip back to the empty classroom, take out a
2-yuan instant noodle from his worn-out schoolbag, and eat it quickly with cold water from the tap. In the evening,
after self-study, he would linger at the school gate food stand, hesitating for a long time before buying a steamed
bun-his only dinner, which he would break into small pieces and chew for 10 minutes to make it “last longer.”
But poverty never dimmed his desire to learn. He woke up at 4:30 every morning, tiptoeing to the school
corridor where the streetlights were still on, and read English words aloud in a low voice to avoid disturbing others.
At night, he was the last to leave the classroom, studying by the dim light until the guard urged him to go. His
winter coat was too thin to keep out the cold, so he would pace back and forth while reciting texts to stay warm; his
shoes, with holes in the soles, were stuffed with newspaper to keep his feet from getting wet on rainy days. When
he felt hungry, he drank water to fill his stomach; when he was tired, he splashed cold water on his face.
Three years of unremitting efforts finally bore fruit. On a sweltering July afternoon, a postman rode his
bicycle to the village, shouting Jiang Hui’s name. The admission letter from North China Electric Power University,
with its red seal, glittered like a precious gem in his trembling hands.

In a world filled with challenges and uncertainties, the heartwarming actions of a deli (熟食店) owner had a
big impact on his community, showing the power of encouragement and kindness. Wally, the owner of a small
neighborhood deli, became an inspiration to many, especially to a young boy who walked into his shop one day.
Jamie Davis, a 12-year-old boy, rushed into Wally’s deli with excitement. His eyes sparkled with joy as he
announced, “I just got first place in my class’s English test! Dad rewarded me with prosciutto (意大利风干生火腿),
and I want to buy some now.” Jamie’s voice was full of joy.
Inspired by Jamie’s enthusiasm, Wally decided to encourage the boy even more and came up with a playful
challenge. With a broad smile on his face, he said, “Let’s make a bet. If you make it onto the honor roll (荣誉榜) at
the end of the term, you can pick anything you want in the store for free.” Jamie happily accepted the challenge, his
face lighting up with excitement. From then on, the two formed a special bond.
Over the following weeks, Jamie put all his effort into studying. He knew that getting onto the honor roll
would take more than just a great final exam score; he needed to maintain excellent performance in every subject
throughout the term. Determined to meet the challenge, Jamie worked tirelessly on his assignments, participated
actively in class, and reviewed his lessons daily. He often visited the deli to share what he had learned. Wally,
seeing how determined Jamie was, continued to cheer him on.
When the day of the final exam arrived, Jamie walked into school with confidence. He had worked hard all
term, and he gave it his best in the exam. After the exams were over, Jamie felt proud of his effort, anxiously

Dee, my best friend, and I were both nominated (提名) for the National Junior Honor Society. For every
student in our school, becoming a member was the biggest dream. Now, we were only one step away.
That weekend, Dee and I sat together in the library, filling out the application forms. We both worked hard to
prove we possessed all the required qualities: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. I wrote about the
effort I put into my honors math and science classes. He listed his experience of baking cookies to raise money for
the community. We poured our hearts into those applications, convinced that we would pass this test — together.
The next day, we submitted the paperwork to the advisor and tried to put it out of our minds.
Months later, a letter arrived. I tore it open, only to feel a sharp stab (刺痛) of disappointment. They had not
chosen me. At that very moment, I saw Dee rushing toward me from a distance, his face lit up with a bright smile, a
letter in his hand. I knew immediately that his news was the opposite of mine. Without a second thought, I turned
away. I knew he wanted to share his joy and had probably even planned for us to celebrate together. But I just
couldn’t face him.
That afternoon, I stepped off the school bus without even a glance or a goodbye to Dee. I hurried home,
handed the letter to my mom, and finally let the tears roll down my cheeks. How could the world be so unfair? I
was completely blinded by my own anger and disappointment.

Anna hurried down the noisy school hallway, trying to avoid everyone, especially Delia and her friends.
Delia was taller, louder, and loved making Anna feel small and stupid, often laughing at her or pushing her books
out of her hands. The big art exam that afternoon was super important for everyone, and Anna was nervous enough
already.
Suddenly, she stopped. Delia’s locker (储物柜) door wasn’t closed! It was open just a crack. Looking inside,
Anna saw the expensive paints and brushes Delia needed for the exam. Without them, Delia couldn’t take the test;
she would fail for sure. Anna’s heart started pounding fast. “This is my chance,” she thought, “after all the mean
(刻薄的) things Delia has done, I could just take them … or at least walk away and not close it.” She felt a hot
wave of anger thinking about the pushes and cruel jokes.
At that moment, her friend Olivia beside her whispered, her eyes wide with excitement. “No one is
watching! You could just grab her paints and brushes, slide them into your bag, and walk away. Delia would totally
panic! She deserves it, Anna. Think about how she treats you. It would be perfect payback.”
Anna stared at the bright colors inside the locker. Her hand shook a little. Olivia was right; it would be so
easy. She could make Delia feel as scared and helpless as Delia always made her feel. It seemed like fair revenge
(报复). But then, Anna thought about the art exam. She loved painting; it was her way to escape and feel strong.
Taking away someone else’s art supplies, even Delia’s, felt ... wrong. Was being mean back really the answer? Did
she want to win by making someone else fail?

Not long ago, I visited a gorge with my parents. It is a gorge with permanent water, and so it’s home to a
variety of animals, including monkeys. The monkeys live on the steep cliff faces where they bound from ledge (岩

through the gorge hoping to see the monkeys.
Macca was the captain of the boat. He obviously loved his job and knew very well about this unique area

if he were enumerating (列举) the heirlooms (传家宝) of his own family. What had set out to be an ordinary tourist
trip, however, turned out to be something different.
We were enjoying the scenery when one of the passengers pointed to the edge of a cliff and said, “There’s a
monkey in that cleft.” “Where?” asked Macca, spinning his head around quickly to look. The passenger was
pointing to a spot where Macca wasn’t used to seeing monkeys. He put the boat in reverse, and there, wedged (楔
入) in a tiny monkey. “This,” Macca said, “is the baby of a female who lives in a cave farther down the gorge It
looks like this monkey has slipped on the rock face and fallen into the water, clambered up, and got wedged in this
cleft — unable to climb up the steep cliff and unable to swim in the water if it falls back.”
Macca nosed the boat to the cliff wall, grabbed a towel, and gently lifted the monkey out, drying its wet fur
as he did. His wife Maria, who was also on the trip, took over the care of the little monkey. She let us look at this
brown bundle of fur with its cute face, wide eyes, and alert ears. It tried to bury itself in the towel like an ostrich
sticking its head in the sand.

The familiar smell of his mother’s best dish, tomato and egg stir-fry, usually comforted 17-year-old Lin
Feng. But tonight, it only deepened the silence that had fallen over their small apartment. He watched his father, a
man of few words who now showed great patience all the time, was carefully placing the easiest-to-pick-up pieces
of food into his wife’s bowl. “Try this, Wen,” he said gently.
Six months earlier, a car crash had left his mother with a spinal (脊柱的) injury, taking away her ability to
move freely. She remembered everything-her past, her family, her love for them-but her body couldn’t follow her
mind: lifting an arm or holding chopsticks became huge challenges. Her once-confident eyes now showed
frustration and a deep, physical tiredness from daily rehabilitation (康复).
Lin Feng’s heart ached as he saw her trembling fingers fail to pick up slippery tofu. The doctor had said
recovery needed consistent guided practice, but they couldn’t provide enough of it. His father worked overtime to
pay medical bills, rarely home before dark. Lin Feng, stressed with final-year exams, felt torn between his future
and his mother’s present need. They both wanted to be there for her every step of the way, but the cruel reality was
that she spent most days struggling alone with exercises.
Pushing back his chair, he whispered, “I’ll be right back.” In his room, his eyes fell on the school science club’s VR
glasses and motion-sensing gloves. A clear thought hit him. This wasn’t just for a project anymore. What if this
technology could become her tireless companion, offering the guided practice they were too busy to give? He
returned to the dining table, holding the device not just with hope, but with a newfound sense of purpose.注意:

Weeks passed, and then months. The practice with the special glasses became a normal part of their days,
just like the evening meals.

Mrs. Wilson had just taken over Class 438 as their new homeroom teacher. As she reviewed the students’
academic records, one name caught her attention — Peter Johnson. His grades had been consistently excellent until
a sudden decline began exactly one year ago. Puzzled, Mrs. Wilson observed Peter closely in class. To her surprise,
he always listened attentively and participated actively, yet his recent test scores remained terrible. Determined to
uncover the truth, she decided to pay a home visit.
One afternoon, Mrs. Wilson reached an old apartment building. The door was opened by an underweight
woman sitting on a wheelchair. “I’m Peter’s mother,” she said, her voice weak. Inside,Mrs. Wilson saw a tiny and
messy room with medical supplies scattered (散落) over it.
Over a cup of tea, Mrs. Wilson learned the heartbreaking story. Peter’s father had passed away three years
ago, leaving his mother to raise him alone. Just a year prior, she had suffered a severe heart disease that left her
partially paralyzed (瘫痪的). Since then, Peter had been balancing school with full-time caregiving. “I try to study
after Mom falls asleep,” he whispered, “but by then I’m so exhausted that I can hardly keep my eyes open.”
Mrs. Wilson’s heart ached as she left. That night, she drafted a letter to the class, explainingPeter’s situation
in the hope of students’ help to him. The response was positive. Students advised taking turns tutoring Peter, while
others planned to organize a bake sale to raise funds for medical bills.Mrs. Wilson knew the real challenge lay
ahead — convincing Peter to accept their help without losing his pride.
The following Monday, Mrs. Wilson presented the class’s initiative to Peter during lunch break. He lowered
his head, saying, “I…I can’t accept this. I don’t want charity.” Mrs. Wilson placed a hand on his shoulder. “This
isn’t charity, Peter. It’s what a family does — they support each other.”
