1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
The Yellow Birds
At seventeen, Karen was self-centered and cared little about anything beyond her own comfort. She only
volunteered at a convalescent center (康复中心) because her teacher said it would improve her final grade. She
often complained to her best friend, “I have to tend to old people for free, and it’s a waste of my time.” To make
matters worse, all volunteers had to wear bright yellow uniforms that made them look ridiculous. The nurses
nicknamed them “the yellow birds,” and Karen hated it.
One day, she met eighty-seven-year-old Lily Sturgeon, a soft-spoken and like-minded resident. Unlike many
others who constantly demanded attention, Lily was quiet and grateful. Karen soon found herself looking forward
to their talks.
One rainy afternoon, Lily showed Karen an old photo album. She pointed to a man — her husband, Albert —
and a little girl, their daughter Emmy, who had died of cancer at age eight. After Emmy’s death, Albert became
“Smiley the Clown” to bring joy to sick children. Though they were poor, they used smiles, small gifts, and
homemade tricks to brighten the children’s days. After Albert died, Lily continued as Smiley until her first heart
attack forced her to stop.
Karen was deeply moved by their selflessness. As graduation neared, she found Lily in pain. “I’ll be back in
two weeks,” Karen promised. But when she returned with a bouquet of lilies, Lily’s room was empty. A nurse
handed her a gift-wrapped box — inside was Lily’s photo album.
Holding the album, Karen remembered how Lily had spent her life bringing smiles to others, asking for
nothing in return. She looked at her own graduation money — saved for months for a new phone — and made a
decision. Three weeks later, she stood before her friend in a clown costume. Her friend stared in confusion. “Why
would you spend your money on that?” he asked. “Life is more about giving than receiving,” Karen replied quietly.
“From now on, just call me Smiley the Clown.”

2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a chilly Saturday morning in early December. Seventeen-year-old Emily, a high school senior, went on
their winter hike in the Rocky Mountains with her father and their golden retriever (金毛猎犬), Cooper. Emily had
been looking forward to this escape from college application stress. As soon as her father stopped the car, she
grabbed her water bottle and the only energy bar she had taken from home and eagerly threw herself into the
mountains, completely forgetting her cell phone in the car.
The first two hours were beautiful.  Sunlight filtered through pine trees, and Cooper excitedly chased
squirrels. They reached a scenic overlook and enjoyed the view. Then the sky darkened without warning.  Within
minutes, the first flakes of snow carried by the wind became a blinding whiteout. “We need to turn back now!” her
father shouted. They tried to retrace their steps, but the trail markers were already buried by the layer of snow.
In the confusion, Cooper ran after a deer that crossed their path.  Emily chased him without thinking,
following the dog’s tracks for what felt like minutes, but when she stopped to catch her breath, she realized she
could no longer see her father or hear his calls. Cooper was also nowhere to be seen. She was left alone in the
wilderness. Frightened but trying to keep calm, she remembered survival tips from a documentary: stay put(待在原
地) and find shelter. She spotted a rock overhang under some trees. Using her gloved hands, she cleared snow and
gathered branches to make a simple temporary shelter. Curling up inside, she tried to keep warm as the temperature
dropped sharply. She ate the only energy bar left and sipped some water from her bottle, forcing herself to stay
awake to avoid hypothermia(体温过低).She thought about her father and Cooper, wondering whether they had
made it back to safety. Hours later, she became very weak and exhausted.
Fortunately, Emily’s father managed to get back to the car park with Cooper, who had returned to him on his
own. He drove quickly to the nearest ranger(护林员) station and reported Emily missing.  A search team was sent
out right away, using thermal imaging and snowmobiles to search through the storm.  Emily’s father and Cooper
followed closely.

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Riya, an 8-year-old student, lived happily in a big city with her parents, who loved her dearly and did what
they could to buy what she wanted. Riya was smart and excellent in her studies. Not only that, she was always
ready to help others.
One day when Riya entered her classroom, she saw a crowd admiring her friend Mary’s new pen and talking
cheerfully. Riya fell in love with that pen at first glance and hoped to get Mary’s permission to let her use it.
Seconds later, the school bell rang, sending the children to the playground for morning exercises.
After a while, their teacher Grace let Riya fetch some chalk from the classroom, where Riya once again saw
Mary’s pen lying on the desk. Riya picked it up and went to her desk. She was ready to write in her book when she
heard the sound of someone walking by. Without thinking, she put the pen in her pocket and saw who it was. It was
Jane, her other friend, who was returning to the classroom. Riya immediately ran out of the room noiselessly and
went to the playground.
The morning exercise finished and everyone went to class, followed by their teacher Grace. The moment
Mary found her pen was missing, she got annoyed. Without delay, she ran to the front and complained to Grace in
tears, “Someone must have stolen my new pen.”
Telling the noisy class to be quiet, Grace asked them who had been in the classroom during the exercise.
Almost everyone pointed at Jane, who said she had felt uncomfortable when exercising and had come back to rest.
Grace asked Jane if she had taken Mary’s new pen, to which Jane firmly said no, insisting she knew nothing about
it. But she had nobody to prove her words. Being suspected and feeling sad, Jane burst out crying.
This had all happened fast and unexpectedly before Riya suddenly realized the pen was still in her pocket.
She froze on the spot, afraid of being treated as a thief.

4.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last Saturday, I volunteered at a community technology help center organized by our local library. The
center aimed to assist elderly residents who were struggling with smartphones, online appointments, and digital
payment systems. As a high school student who had grown up with technology, I felt confident that I could make a
difference.
That morning, I was assigned to help Mr. Carter, an 82-year-old retired factory worker who wanted to learn
how to use a messaging app to talk to his grandson studying abroad. He arrived early, holding his phone carefully in
both hands as if it were something fragile and unfamiliar. “I just want to see his face once in a while,” he said with
a shy smile. “He’s always busy.”
At first, I thought it would be simple. I explained how to download the app, create an account, and add a
contact. But things did not go as smoothly as I had expected. Mr. Carter kept tapping the wrong icons, closing the
page by mistake, or forgetting the password we had just set. Each time he made a mistake, he would look at me
apologetically. “I’m sorry. I’m slowing you down,” he murmured.
I tried to reassure (安抚) him, but after repeating the same steps again and again, I felt my patience wearing
thin. Other volunteers nearby seemed to be finishing their tasks quickly. A part of me began to wonder whether I
was really suited for this job.
Then Mr. Carter stopped trying. He lowered his eyes and held the phone tightly. “Maybe I’m too old for
this,” he said quietly. “It’s probably easier not to try. I don’t want to bother you.”
His words caught me off guard. I suddenly noticed how lonely he looked, sitting there in a room full of
young volunteers and glowing screens. For him, this was not just about learning an app — it was about staying
connected to someone he loved.

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sumi was a single mother. Her daughter Anna has always been called “Number 23.” Every time the school
released exam results, Anna would always end up in 23rd position among 50 pupils. Always 23, no matter how hard
she pushed Anna. Every mention of this nickname gnawed at Sumi.
One day, Sumi, along with Anna, was invited to a lively gathering of several friends and their families. The
atmosphere was delightful and as the lunch came to a finish, a man playfully asked the youngsters what they
aspired (有志成为) to be when they grew up. “I want to be a pianist!” “I want to be a famous actor!” “I want to be
a politician!” “I’ll start a business and make tons of money!” One after another, the children voiced these bold,
ambitious dreams, earning warm applause and compliments from the adults.
Anna, however, simply smiled and clapped along, remaining silent. She was quietly occupied with serving
soup and distributing cookies to the guests. Then, the man who had posed the question turned his gaze toward Anna
and added, “Hey, our Anna hasn’t shared her dream yet. What do you want to be when you grow up?” Anna paused,
and then, with a soft smile, replied, “Uncle, I want to be a primary school teacher. I love kids — telling them funny
stories and teaching them how to make paper cuts. I just love dancing and singing and playing with them.” The
room fell instantly silent. Sumi felt her heart sink.
Later, boarding a rented bus for the return trip, Sumi stared out the window, a heavy cloud of disappointment
settling over her. She had hoped Anna would dream bigger, not settle for such an ordinary life. As traffic thickened,
the bus got fast stuck in a jam. Suddenly, two boys erupted into a full-blown quarrel over a single slice of dessert.
No one could calm them down. To make matters worse, more kids on the bus began to get restless due to the jam.

York City No.1 Middle School was a warm place, especially with more than 10 stray cats (流浪猫) around.
These cats were not managed by anyone, but they were never afraid of teachers or students.
Every day, when students were having classes, some cats would walk into the classrooms quietly. They
would climb onto the teacher’s desk. It seemed that they were listening carefully to the lessons. But soon, they fell
asleep soundly. After class, they would make cute “meow” sounds to attract students. Sometimes, their faces even
leaned against students’ school uniform pants, thus making everyone smile.
Gradually, all the students were attracted by the lovely cats. During breaks, many students brought food from
home to feed them. Day in and day out, the stray cats became rounder and fatter. They looked more and more
lovely, and everyone loved to play with them.
However, about a month later, students noticed that fewer and fewer stray cats came out to wander around.
At first, they thought the cats had left the campus. But later, Jenny, the president of the Student Union, went to the
warehouse (仓库) to get tools for campus activities. To her amazement, she found all the stray cats that hadn’t been
seen recently were in the warehouse. Their bodies were shaking. It seemed that they were sick.
Jenny felt worried. She told this to her best friends at once. After a short discussion, they decided to take the
cats to see a vet (兽医). They pooled their pocket money together to pay for the vet fees. Luckily, after a few days
of treatment, the stray cats recovered and became as lively as before.
But Jenny realized that things were not that simple. The daily feeding by students could only solve the cats’
hunger problem. Their health was more important. So Jenny made a decision; she would launch a public welfare
project called “Hello, York Cats” in the school.

For years, the old community garden behind our apartment building had been Mrs. Gable’s pride and joy.
She was the self-appointed guardian of the small plot of land, where she grew roses that were the envy of the
neighborhood.
Every morning, she would be there, weeding, watering, and chasing away any child who dared to kick a ball
too close to her flowers. To the kids in the neighborhood, she was “the garden witch (女巫),” and her area of green
was strictly off-limits.
I had just moved into the building with my six-year-old son, Leo, who was crazy about insects. One
afternoon, he came running to me with his eyes wide. “Mom! There’s a bush with the biggest, furriest caterpillars
(毛毛虫) I’ve ever seen! But it’s behind the fence,” he said, pointing towards Mrs. Gable’s garden. I told him it was
private property and we had to respect it. He nodded, but I could see the disappointment in his face.
A few days later, I was surprised to find a small cardboard box on our doorstep. Inside were a few leaves
with three fat caterpillars crawling on them. A handwritten note was taped to the lid: “For the boy who loves bugs.
Tell him to bring them back when they make their cocoons (茧). — M. Gable.” Leo was overjoyed. He named them
“The Furies” and watched them every day.
Weeks later, the caterpillars had indeed formed cocoons. Leo was eager to return them to the bush, but when
we knocked on Mrs. Gable’s door, there was no answer. We left a note saying we’d bring them back the next day.
However, the next morning, we saw a moving truck parked outside her apartment.
A neighbor informed us that Mrs. Gable had had a sudden fall and had gone to live with her daughter in
another city. She had left in a hurry, leaving instructions for the apartment and garden to be taken care of.

Vast grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, known as the “roof of the world”, have long been home to the
black-necked crane ( 鹤). Very fond of the graceful birds, Tibetan people have regarded them as the plateau’s
messengers — soft-natured, strong enough to survive the plateau’s extremes and deeply tied to the balance of their
land.
Drolma and Tashi were a couple who had tended yaks (牦牛) for decades in Lhunzhub, a county near the
Yarlung Zangbo River. They often paused, watching the cranes flying or dancing. As loyal protectors of the
plateau’s wildlife, they had long heard of TARWPA (Tibet Autonomous Region Wildlife Protection Association),
but they never thought they would contact it one day.
One cool autumn morning, while rounding up yaks near a stream, Tashi suddenly froze. There, beneath the
woods, lay a black-necked crane — its body muddled and left leg missing below the knee, likely from the attack of
a predator like a fox. It let out a weak cry of pain. Tashi said, “We can’t leave it here.” Drolma bent down, gently
wrapping the crane in her woolen scarf.
They carried it home. Drolma gently cleaned its body with care, removed blood from its left leg and dressed
its wound carefully. Then they made it a soft bed near the stove and fed it with wheat. For three days, they took
turns looking after it. Its bleeding wound began to heal, but anxiety still weighed heavily on the couple. The crane
could neither walk nor fly.
However, a turning point came. On Saturday, their 15-year-old son Dawa returned home from boarding
school. At the sight of the injured crane, his eyes widened with surprise. Drolma and Tashi told about the whole
story. Dawa’s expression turned serious and then his eyes lit up with hope. “My teacher once talked about artificial
legs for animals!” Dawa said cheerfully. “But it requires professional knowledge and skills from specialized
institutions.”

“I don’t want to see that cat in our yard again,” my husband John said firmly, chasing the beautiful yellow
cat across the creek. His voice showed clear frustration. I sighed softly and explained gently. Cats are independent
creatures, unlike dogs. They roam (漫步) wherever they please, especially when hunting mice. Still, John insisted
on protecting our space. I sent a quick text to our neighbor, Cheryl, explaining his discomfort. She replied politely,
noting it was hard to control the cat outdoors. We hoped for the best.
The next morning, John stood at the bedroom picture window. He had installed it specifically for
birdwatching, which was my favorite gift. Suddenly, he called me over with urgency. I approached slowly,
worrying the cat had returned to disobey us. Instead, two enormous groundhogs (土拨鼠) sat side by side on our
wooden deck. We had seen them near the woods before, but never this bold. They looked directly at us without fear.
John opened the window quickly, and they raced away into the trees.
That evening, I glanced out the window again. I noticed suspicious movement in the flowerbed. John hurried
in to see one groundhog chewing red flowers around the fountain. Every blossom was gone. It was heartbreaking to
see our hard work destroyed. John lifted the window, and the animal fled. He decided to research groundhogs on
the computer to understand their destructive behavior fully.
Before he left, I was surprised to see another groundhog sat in our enclosed vegetable garden, eating cabbage
calmly. John explained angrily that it had dug under the chicken wire. He was determined to solve this problem
immediately. I watched him walk toward the computer, praying he would not see our rows of green plants, cared for
all spring, were being destroyed quickly.
Soon, John found interesting information online. He stared attentively at the screen for a long time. He
discovered that groundhogs hate the scent of cats deeply. They avoid areas where cats roam frequently.
