寻找可能影响后续情节的实物线索(如:a map, a key, a letter, a photo)。
He ran away. → He sprang to his feet and dashed
into the woods, his heart pounding.
心理描写: 使用wonder, hesitate, realize, be overwhelmed with joy/relief/fear 等词汇和内心独白来揭示人物
The air was filled with the
sweet scent of roses. A cold shiver ran down my spine.
The rain was beating against the window, mirroring the
turmoil in my heart.
Hearing the news, she burst into tears. With tears streaming down her face, she...
It was this key that saved us. Only then did I understand the meaning of her words.
Upon hearing this, I...
Without hesitation, we...
A wave of excitement/anxiety washed over me.
My mind was racing.
A mix of emotions flooded my heart.
I was overwhelmed with a sense of relief.
He struggled to his feet.
Tears of joy welled up in her eyes.
We exchanged a look of understanding.
It was an experience I would cherish forever.
We not only... but also learned a valuable lesson about...
The sun set, painting the sky with hope for a new beginning.

My wife and I wanted to share our new home with family and friends by hosting a small gathering in the early
summer. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order.
There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn’t counted on: My
brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece’s
small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and
keep him outside.
My plan was working out just fine. Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard
and giving the kids plenty of room. Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone
went indoors.
It was an awkward moment. I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn’t
happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to
come out again. His reply came as a surprise — a shock, actually: “Not a chance.” Clearly, he was unhappy over
the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice. Well, he’ll get over it, I reasoned.
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call
first. However, my conscience (良心) kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother’s shoes. He was facing
health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. Toby was his constant
companion, the one who kept him going.

答案:
I realized it was me who was at fault. As I stood there, my brother's terse reply echoing in my mind, a wave of guilt
washed over me. How could I have been so insensitive? My brother, who had just lost his lifelong companion,
found solace only in Toby. By rejecting his loyal friend, I had essentially rejected him during his most vulnerable
time. I recalled the lonely look in his eyes that rainy evening and finally understood his pain. Without a word, I
grabbed my car keys, determined to make things right. My wife, seeing the resolve on my face, quickly packed
some freshly baked biscuits — knowing they were my brother's favorite.
With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother’s door. My heart pounded as I raised my hand to
knock. When the door opened, my brother stood there, surprise flickering across his tired face. "I'm so sorry," I
blurted out, extending the peace offering. "I was wrong. Toby is family too." Just then, Toby came bounding to the
door, his tail wagging furiously. A faint smile touched my brother's lips as he invited me in. Over tea and biscuits,
we talked honestly for the first time in months. I apologized sincerely, and he accepted, his eyes glistening with
emotion. That day, I learned that true family means accepting each other completely, unconditionally, even the four-
legged members.
心理描写:a wave of guilt washed over me, How could I have been so insensitive?, My heart pounded。
动作描写:grabbed my car keys, blurted out, extending the peace offering, Toby came bounding to the door, his
tail wagging furiously。
感官细节:freshly baked biscuits, his eyes glistening with emotion。
句式多样:有简单句、复合句,以及As I stood there...
使用了比喻:a wave of guilt washed over me。
I learned that true family means...

“What is your name? ” is a question most frequently asked when people meet for the first time. But for me, it
was the first challenge I encountered as an international student in Ireland.
The pronunciation system of the Chinese language is quite different from that of English. For native speakers
of English, some Chinese words are rather difficult to pronounce. My given name Qiuyu (秋雨), for instance,
happened to be a great challenge for many of them. Every time I gave a self-introduction, I had to explain how to
pronounce my name at least five times, yet they still could not say it the way I did.
Once in a lecture, the professor tried repeating my name after me over and over in front of thirty classmates.
I really did not know whether I should continue correcting him or simply drop the matter. I feared that my
classmates might grow tired of my efforts or even lose patience with me. After all, I did care about how others
would think of me. I realized that if I didn’t stop, the entire lecture would be ruined. “It’s okay, professor,” I
shrugged (耸肩). The awkward moment ended with the class erupting into laughter. I forced a smile, unsure how to
respond further.
After that incident, I stopped acting as a “Chinese teacher.” Instead of correcting others when they were
struggling to pronounce my name, I just smiled and nodded approvingly. This approach spared me the discomfort
of having to over-explain. However, I soon found that by doing so, I might be losing something more important: the
opportunity to share a small part of my cultural identity.

Kevin was pretty bored. His mother was at work, and his father had been away on business. Therefore, he
was left in the care of Mrs. Hill, an old lady who lived next door. His parents had raised the 12-year-old to be a
good boy. He never got into trouble, though sometimes he wanted to do risky things. Mrs. Hill was asleep. Kevin
sighed (叹息) and hoped something exciting would happen. Suddenly, a movement outside caught his eye.
Mrs. Hill’s front window faced Mr. and Mrs. Green’s house across the street. The couple had both gone to
work, so it was strange that someone was over there. Kevin stared at the man at their front door. Suddenly, the man
jumped through an open window into the house. With his heart in his mouth, Kevin grabbed Mrs. Hill’s home
phone and called the police.
Thinking that the man might get away with whatever he wanted before the police arrived, Kevin decided to
do something. He rushed out of Mrs. Hill’s house and crossed the street quickly. Grabbing a branch from a cut-
down tree, he jumped in through the window. “Stop right there! You must leave right now!” he called out, holding
the branch with both hands.
The man froze for a second, but when he saw the skinny boy he breathed a sigh of relief. “Hey, kid, put that
down. It was my home. My parents used to live here and my father’s watch was here,” he explained, trying to lift a
floorboard.
At that moment, the sounds of a police car echoed (回响) in the air. The man stood up in a panic, then ran
through the house toward the window and jumped out. Kevin followed out and told the arriving police officers
what had happened. They pursued and arrested the man.
Kevin went back to Mrs. Hill’s house. Somehow he wasn’t sure he had done the right thing. “What if he has told
the truth?” he thought to himself. The man’s words sounded pretty convincing. 注意:

I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take
a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched
down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran
like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought.
That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus station. I
thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I
was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted
for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car.
Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue (队
列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big
smile on his face. "We made it," he said.
Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my
Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of
helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash
machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the
message: "Out of order. Sorry."

One rainy November afternoon I had a quarrel with my Dad about his poor housework. I knew if I didn’t
leave the house soon I would unleash (发泄) a storm of anger on him.
“I’m taking you to school.” Dad said, as rain came down in sheets and lightning flashed in the sky. “You are
not used to driving in this kind of weather.” he continued, reaching for his boots. “I have been driving that route for
many years. I can drive it today.” With these words, I struggled into my jacket, grabbed my bag and stormed out of
the house.
“Don’t take the shortcut, Donna!” Dad shouted after me, throwing through the car window a big pack of
sandwiches.
Dad had been working as a building worker when a heart attack last spring forced him to leave his job earlier
than he had planned. Dad began to stay home and took over the household chores. As the medical bills mounted I
realized I would have to work part-time after my school day to make ends meet.
The new arrangement was a disaster for me. Exhausted after a day of dealing with my academic routine and
food delivery, all I wanted was a hot home-cooked meal and a good night’s sleep. During the months that followed,
Dad’s cooking somehow was getting worse. We dined on smelly baked potatoes and, of course, hard egg
sandwiches. I would remember the time Dad had eaten every piece of potatoes on his plate and complimented (恭
维) the dinner though I discovered later how he disliked it. So I wouldn’t say anything to him, even about the
endless sandwiches. It was much harder for me to hold my peace after Dad served such meals for the third night in
a row.
As far as I was concerned, things couldn’t get much worse. So that rainy morning when I found my blue
skirt badly folded, I could only burst out. I had had it!

文。
In the small town of Millfield, at Cedarwood Middle School, Jake, a lanky and soft-spoken boy with thick
glasses, was an easy target for bullies. His passion for astronomy set him apart from his peers. Instead of playing
football or video games, he spent his free time stargazing and reading books about galaxies and constellations.
Every day at lunch, as Jake sat alone at a corner table, devouring a homemade sandwich and scribbling notes about
the latest celestial event he’d read about, a group led by Mark, the school’s self- proclaimed “cool kid,” would pass
by.
Mark, tall with a confident swagger, loved the attention he got from his friends. With a smile on his face,
he’d lean over Jake’s table and pick up his astronomy notebook. “What’s this? More of your space nonsense?” he’d
sneer, waving the notebook in the air. His friends would snicker, and Jake would blush, reaching out timidly to get
his notebook back. “Leave me alone,” Jake would mumble, his voice barely above a whisper. “Or what? You’ll call
your alien friends to attack me?” Mark would laugh, and the group would walk away, leaving Jake feeling
humiliated.
Ms. Thompson, Jake’s science teacher, noticed the situation but could only do so much to stop it during
class. “Boys, be respectful,” she’d say whenever she caught Mark teasing Jake. But once out of her sight, the
bullying continued.
One day, the school announced a science fair with the theme “Innovation s for the Future.” Students were
encouraged to create projects that could change the world. Mark, seeing it as a chance to show off, immediately
started planning a project with his friends. Jake, on the other hand, decided to combine his love for astronomy with
his dream of making a difference. He began working on a model of a sustainable space colony, spending hours after
school in the science lab, building and perfecting his creation.
When the day of the science fair arrived, students and parents crowded into the gymnasium to view the
projects. Mark’s group presented a flashy but rather simplistic model of a self- driving car. Jake, nervous but
determined, set up his space colony model, complete with detailed explanations of how it would generate energy
and recycle resources.
As the judges walked around to evaluate the projects, Mark and his friends watched with smug expressions,
convinced they would win. But when the results were about to be announced, everyone held their breath in
anticipation.

Leadership. What does the word mean? Leadership is not just the ability to lead a team, it is a journey of
selflessness. Some people are born leaders while others are not. This was how I had to start my journey
“Alright, class! We are going to work in groups to create a mind map! It needs to contain the facts we
discussed during the Science Centre trip!” Mrs. Low’s voice boomed across the classroom like thunder. “This is a
great opportunity for our newly appointed group leaders to prove themselves worthy of that title.”
Mrs. Low then raised one of her eyebrows with great expectations. The class burst into non-stop chattering.
Rita and John glanced at me warily. I raised my head, the gleaming badge ( 闪耀的徽章) with the words “Team
Leader” pinned proudly on my uniform.
Mrs. Low instructed the class, “Go to your seats now.” In the blink of an eye, everyone rushed back to their
tables to begin their project. I took out a piece of paper and pointed to Rita, “Hey you! Make a list of the stuff that
we have learned.” Rita angrily slammed her hand on the table. She complained, “Why do you have to be so bossy?”
“Because I’m the leader!” I shouted back. She glared at me with anger burning in her eyes.
I turned to John, “And you! Start drawing the mind map! I want it done quickly!” John did not protest; he
simply bit his lip, muttering, “Is this really leadership?”
He went on to draw the mind map while his question rang in my head and I asked myself, is this really
leadership? It was as if I was standing in front of a mirror, looking at my reflection, wondering if I was proud to see
how I was behaving then. “Am I right to order people around like that? Should I be more polite and less bossy?”
Questions bombarded my brain until I felt it was about to explode. I closed my eyes and sighed.
Suddenly, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned my head around. It was Mrs. Low. As though she could read
my mind, Mrs. Low explained, “Leadership is not just about being a leader. It is to serve others, not yourself. It is a
selfless journey.”
